With the 2022 breeding season right around the corner, we will feature a series of breeders' mating plans over the coming weeks. Today we have Taylor Made's Katie Taylor Whalen on behalf of Larry Best, owner of OXO Equine.

Best retired two stallions to Taylor Made–GISW Instilled Regard (Arch) and GSW/GISP Instagrand (Into Mischief)–for their first seasons last year, with both represented by their first foals in 2022. A majority of his broodmare band, over 50 strong, will go to one of the two and are expecting foals by either of the young sires this year, but Best also supports another former runner who also entered stud last year in MGISP Rowayton (Into Mischief) at Diamond B Farm in Pennsylvania. He also uses a number of outside stallions.

With his first recorded start as an owner in 2017, Best has amassed a large and stellar group of broodmares in a short time, and said, “OXO has three priorities. 1, Quality. 2, Quality. 3, Quality.”

“OXO Equine has collected an unbelievably accomplished, well-bred, and beautiful group of mares,” said Taylor Whalen. “It is a joy to work with such an exceptional group. Larry has done a wonderful job of identifying young mares with active families. Breeders should pay close attention to the depth of his support for Instilled Regard and Instagrand. Both Instilled Regard and Instagrand were precocious accomplished racehorses, and they are receiving a caliber of mares that many stallions don't see until they are well established. Great things are in store for both OXO stallions and mares.”

With an addition of 18 maiden mares currently lined up for this season, in 2021 Best bred 33 mares he boards at Taylor Made. All but one of them went to Instagrand, Instilled Regard, or Rowayton. Every one of his maiden mares in 2022 is going to either Instagrand or Instilled Regard and all but 10 of his other mares will also stay with one of his own stallions.

Said Taylor Whelan, “Though OXO is excited and committed to support their own well accomplished stallions, they see the value in rotating top mares to interesting outside stallions. Essential Quality and Practical Joke both fit the mold. They were accomplished on the track, from the top two most powerful sire lines (Tapit/Into Michief) and have racing and commercial upside. We also learn from what goes well! We are taking Hung the Moon back to Quality Road. Her exceptional yearling colt by Quality Road was purchased last summer at Saratoga by Maverick Racing.”

Following is a selection of some of the biggest names in Best's broodmare band and their plans.

BEAU RECALL (IRE) (m, 8, Prancealot {Ire}–Greta d'Argent {Ire}, by Great Commotion), to be bred to Instagrand

Best acquired this MGSW for $350,000 at the 2020 Keeneland November sale. She went to Instilled Regard for her first season last year and will visit Instagrand this year.

BLUE PRIZE (ARG) (m, 9, Pure Prize–Blues for Sale {Arg}, by Not For Sale {Arg}), to be bred to Practical Joke

Best purchased the 2019 GI Breeders' Cup Distaff winner for a sales-topping $5 million at the 2019 Fasig-Tipton November Sale. He sent her to Into Mischief for her first foal, now a yearling filly. The MGISW and $2.6-million earner is due to Instagrand this year and will be bred back to Practical Joke. Taylor Whalen said the farm is very high on Blue Prize's yearling by Instagrand's sire.

CAMBIER PARC (m, 6, Medaglia d'Oro–Sealy Hill, by Point Given), to be bred to Instagrand

Out of Canada's 2007 Horse of the Year who has since produced four graded winners, Cambier Parc was a $1.25-million buy for Best at the 2017 Keeneland September sale and turned into a MGISW for him while under the tutelage of Chad Brown. The mare's first foal is due this year–an Instilled Regard foal–and she will be sent to the court of Instagrand.

CONCRETE ROSE (m, 6, Twirling Candy–Solerina, by Powerscourt {GB}), to be bred to Essential Quality

Another GISW in the OXO broodmare band, Concrete Rose was a $1.95-million acquisition by Best at the 2020 Keeneland November sale. The mare recently made headlines again when she delivered her first foal, which also happened to be one of the first reported foals by Instagrand.

FINITE (m, 5, Munnings–Remit, by Tapit), to be bred to Instagrand

Picked up at Fasig-Tipton November just two months ago for $2.2 million, Finite is a MGSW out of a full-sister to MGSW Tapiture. She is one of the maidens headed to Best's Instagrand.

INDIAN MISS (m, 13, Indian Charlie–Glacken's Gal, by Smoke Glacken), to be bred to Practical Joke

A $1.9-million buy by OXO at the 2020 Keeneland November sale, Indian Miss is the dam of 2019 champion sprinter Mitole (Eskendereya) and additional GISW Hot Rod Charlie (Oxbow), who is slated to contest the G1 Dubai World Cup Mar. 26. The oldest and most accomplished broodmare to date in the OXO broodmare band, Indian Miss is currently in foal to Instagrand and will go back to Practical Joke. Best also has her yearling colt by Into Mischief.

Humans plan. Horses laugh.

Judge Johnny was bred to be a star racehorse. His dam had already produced a Breeders' Cup winner, he was sired by Empire Maker on the stallion's return from Japan, and he was in the second crop born at the up-and-coming boutique breeding farm, Bonne Chance.

As it turns out, JJ is definitely a star. He just prefers three-day eventing to winning races.

Bonne Chance has been supporting the 4-year-old gelding's career change with the assistance of trainer Carleigh Fedorka, with a short-term goal to compete him in the United States Eventing Association's Young Event Horse series throughout 2021.

“It's brought joy to us as a group, to see him be the superstar that we knew he was, even though we got the sport wrong,” said Leah Alessandroni, Bloodstock and Office Manager at Bonne Chance Farm. “I keep telling the guys, I know that it sucks he wasn't our Derby horse, but I think it says a lot about our program that we still produce this kind of animal.”

Bonne Chance was founded in 2015, and there were just six foals in the farm's first crop born in 2016. Among those first six foals was the future two-time Grade 1 winner Cambier Parc.

“As a small farm, we have to produce quality,” Alessandroni said. “That's why I really love how successful JJ is; even in what seems like failure, we've still achieved the founding goal.”

<ins data-revive-zoneid=436 data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

<ins data-revive-zoneid=437 data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

Judge Johnny made five starts on the track, never finishing better than sixth and earning comments on the carts like “never factored.” It was frustrating because of both his breeding and his good looks, but JJ clearly had other plans.

“It was so obvious that the horse did not want to be a racehorse,” Alessandroni said. “As much as his family was amazing racehorses, he would just sleep flat-out on the ground and was so laid back. He's so beautiful, it kind of breaks your heart because everything was right except he didn't want to do it.”

Alessandroni suggested the gelding be moved on to a second career, and that Bonne Chance support him through his first 90 days or so of re-training. The team enthusiastically agreed to send him to Fedorka's care.

“Thoroughbred aftercare is just something that I've seen take leaps and bounds forward during the last 10 years, but I still think we're missing a little bit of the connection from the racing side of the game,” said Alessadroni. “Some of the criticism I often hear is, 'Oh, those guys have so much money, why can't they pick up some of the cost?' And to be honest, they're right. It costs less to have them in training for a sporthorse career, so what's six months of training at half the cost, and everybody wins? And the mare's no longer embarrassed!”

That moment when CEO Alberto Figueiredo agreed to support Judge Johnny's transition to a new career was a big one for Alessandroni on a personal level.

Without any family or friends in the Thoroughbred racing industry, the Florida-born Alessandroni's introduction to the sport came through aftercare.

“I was one of those kids that was always horse crazy,” she explained. “There were a couple OTTBs at my barn, and I just loved them. My family would watch the Triple Crown races, so I learned how to look up horses on Equibase and learned some very basic handicapping.

“Somehow that snowballed into me being really passionate about the industry despite the fact that I never actually went to a racetrack until college at the University of Kentucky, when I went to Keeneland.”

From an internship at the Maker's Mark Secretariat Center, Alessandroni eventually transitioned to the bloodstock end of the business with an internship and then a job at WinStar Farm. While she learned a lot at the big-time operation, she didn't want to spend the rest of her career there.

“When I left, so many people told me I was insane,” Alessandroni said, laughing. “I didn't really have a plan, I just knew I hadn't found my niche. I wound up at Regis Farm, which was then sold after 1 ½ years to Bonne Chance. All of us that were there, we sat down with the new owners and listened to them, and I think all of us were all-in, no hesitation.

“It's so rare to be able to be at the ground level of a new program, one that has truly good people behind it. When I look back at my life and how I ended up here, it's just kind of amazing.”

Bonne Chance is also a joint owner in farms in Argentina, Brazil, and France. Stud R.D.I. is the Brazilian operation, which last year sent its dual Group 1 winner Ivar (Agnes Gold) to North America. Campaigned in partnership with Bonne Chance, Ivar won the G1 Shadwell Turf Mile at Keeneland last fall.

Ivar wins the G1 Shadwell Turf Mile at Keeneland, earning an expenses-paid berth to the Breeders' Cup Mile

“We have been able to piggyback off the success of the South American operation, building on a really strong foundation, which is why we look like we popped up out of nowhere,” Alessandroni explained. “When they sent Ivar up here and he won the Shadwell, that's the moment when the COVID situation really hit me for the first time, because not a single one of them were able to come to those races.”

As for Bonne Chance homebreds, the farm has sent out two other stakes winners so far, Iva and New York Groove. Its largest foal crop yet — 18 — hit the ground in 2020, and Alessandroni said this year's 2-year-olds are particularly exciting, as well.

“We spend so much time just looking at horses,” she said. “That's been the deciding factor. We're here to produce a racehorse; quality, not quantity.”

Since Bonne Chance is so new, Judge Johnny was really the farm management's first taste of aftercare. At first, Figueiredo was asking around to see if any employees wanted the horse, but Alessandroni suggested the alternative route of re-starting him on the farm's tab.

“We just started talking it out,” Alessandroni said. “It was really important to us to set him up for success, and really we were still saving money while giving the horse a chance to succeed.

“The plan was to put him up for sale last fall, but he kept getting better and better. Carleigh kept telling me, 'This is the nicest horse I've ever retrained.' She's not the type to say that if she doesn't mean it. I told the team, 'We will never have one this nice again. Let's see where it goes.'

“We didn't intend for it to be this in-depth of a process, but people are really excited about it. It's really cool to share the process with people who didn't know that side of it.”

Now, the goal is to showcase Judge Johnny's off-the-track skills during 2021, hopefully through the Young Event Horse series, and ultimately to find him his next partner. During the process, Alessandroni hopes to bring more attention to aftercare.

“I hate this idea of 'saving' OTTBs,” she said. “A better idea is that these Thoroughbreds are incredible athletes. There's not a more versatile horse in the world, and we should be continuing to celebrate them. Even the professional riders around the big five-star event in Lexington say there's nothing better than a Thoroughbred on the cross country course.

“To see the joy in JJ on cross country, that just drove it home for me. He's so happy to be out there.”

Alessandroni continued to say that she hopes more breeders will take an interest in their horses' second careers as well.

“You know, breeding for commercialism, it can be a tricky situation,” she said. “But, if the goal is to breed a sound racehorse, you're going to have superstars overall and you may accidentally breed a really nice sporthorse in the process!”

Sealy Hill, the 2007 Canadian Horse of the Year and successful broodmare, has been euthanized due to the infirmities of old age, BloodHorse reports.

The daughter of Point Given resided at Bonne Chance Farm in Versailles, Ky., where she spent nearly her entire broodmare career, owned either by Bonne Chance or Regis Farms. She will be buried on the farm.

Sealy Hill raced as an Ontario-born homebred for Eugene Melnyk, trained by Mark Casse, winning seven of 18 starts for earnings of $1,747,081.

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

She is best known for her 2007 campaign, where she secured the Sovereign Awards as Canada's Horse of the Year, champion turf female, and 3-year-old female. Her season started in the U.S., including a win in the Grade 3 Bourbonette Oaks, then she moved back to Woodbine for the summer, where she became the first – and so far, only – horse to sweep Canada's Triple Tiara: the Woodbine Oaks, Bison City Stakes, and Wonder Where Stakes. She added runner-up efforts in the G2 Canadian Stakes and G1 E.P. Taylor Stakes in the fall.

Sealy Hill raced for one more season, where she earned placings in three graded stakes, including a runner-up effort in the 2008 Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf at Santa Anita Park.

As a broodmare, Sealy Hill had nine foals, with seven starters and five winners; four of which won in graded stakes company.

The most prominent among them is Cambier Parc, by Medaglia d'Oro, whose four graded stakes victories for owner Larry Best's OXO Equine include two against Grade 1 competition.

Sealy Hill passed the mantle of Sovereign Award success on to her first foal, the Distorted Humor filly Hillaby, who was named Canada's champion female sprinter of 2014. Other notable runners out of Sealy Hill include Grade 3 winners Belle Hill (by Sky Mesa) and Gale Force (by Giant's Causeway).

Sealy Hill's final foal, the Into Mischief colt Eleven Central, was born in 2018 and is working toward his first start at Palm Meadows Training Center. He was purchased as a yearling by Best for $950,000. The mare did not catch when she was bred to Distorted Humor in 2019, and she had not been bred since then.

As has become the custom in New York’s top turf races, Chad Brown offers a three-pronged attack in Saturday’s GI Flower Bowl S., a ‘Win and You’re In’ event for the GI Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf at Keeneland next month. Leading the fray is dual Grade I-winner Cambier Parc (Medaglia d’Oro), victorious in four graded stakes last season–the GI Queen Elizabeth Cup, GI Del Mar Oaks, GIII Wonder Again S. and GIII Herecomesthebride S. Sent off the even-money favorite in her sole start of 2020 in the Sept. 12 GII Canadian S. at Woodbine, the OXO Equine runner finished runner-up behind Rideforthecause (Candy Ride {Arg}). Jockey John Velazquez, aboard for both Grade I wins in 2019, is reunited with the 4-year-old here. Brown is also represented by Nay Lady Nay (Ire) No Nay Never), winner of two of three starts this term, including Monmouth’s nine-furlong GIII Matchmaker S. in July. The 4-year-old, who returned to score in Laurel’s All Along S. Sept. 7, will be joined by Irad Ortiz Jr. for the first time Saturday.

Flying high following a victory in last weekend’s G1 Qatar Prix de L’Arc de Triomphe with Sottsass (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}), Peter Brant is represented by the French hero’s half-sister My Sister Nat (Fr) (Acclamation {GB}). Winner of the G3 Bertrand de Tarragon at Longchamp during her sophomore season, the bay was winless in a quartet of starts at four, however, did hit the board in three of them, including a second in Aqueduct’s 11-furlong GIII Long Island S. Nov. 30. Runner-up behind Mean Mary (Scat Daddy) in Belmont’s GII New York S. June 27, the French-bred annexed the 12-furlong GIII Waya S. at the Spa Aug. 8. Most recently, she finished second to Civil Union (War Front) in the Sept. 5 GII Glens Falls S.

Riding a three-race win streak, Civil Union, a former Brown trainee, joined the Shug McGaughey barn last fall, debuting for the trainer with a third in a 9 1/2-furlong Gulfstream allowance in January. Breaking through with an allowance score over this course and trip June 21, the Joe Allen homebred added the July 12 River Memories S. over 12 furlongs before her victory upstate. Joel Rosario, in the irons for her latest win, gets back on board this time.

“I think she’s a nice filly and she’s learned to put it all together,” McGaughey said. “We’ve been able to space her races in a good way and we’ll see if she moves it up the next notch. She’ll run as far as you want to run her.”

He added, “Most of the War Fronts like the firm turf. I think she likes this big race track at Belmont, too. She liked Saratoga and ran good there, but I think everything is coming together with her and I’m hoping it comes together Saturday.”

Rideforthecause, rallying from next-to-last in the field of eight, launched a relentless rally around the final turn under rider David Moran and blew past 4-5 favorite Cambier Parc for a convincing four-length score in Saturday's $286,000 Canadian Stakes Presented by the Japan Racing Association at Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto, Ontario.

Trained by Gail Cox, Rideforthecause was notching her first stakes win while making her 10th career start in the Grade 2 Canadian, a 1 1/8-mile turf race for fillies and mares.

“I had a great trip,” said Moran, who was recording his second win in the Canadian after picking up the mount on successful 2012 English invader Barefoot Lady.

“She settled back there nice and relaxed,” said Moran, who was biding his time as Another Time and Amalfi Coast dueled through fractions of :23.80 and :46.55.

“I got a nice inside move just past the three to the two-and-a-half (poles), and just got myself in a good position to take on Raffi (jockey Rafael Hernandez, aboard Cambier Parc).

“And when I felt her picking up and kicking by him, I said, 'Oh, we have a shot to win this!' and she kept going very gamely.”

Rideforthecause was in front by a half-length through a mile in 1:32.75 and stopped the clock in 1:45.

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

Cambier Parc, coming off back-to-back Grade 1 stakes wins but making her first start in 11 months for trainer Chad Brown, sat a nice trip just outside the pacemakers and was moving for the lead as they hit the six furlongs in 1:09.49.

Although no match for the winner, the New York shipper was 2 1/4 lengths clear of Court Return for third money.

Court Return, the longest shot on the board at 30-1, trailed through the early stages but closed well for third money, 2 ¾ lengths before fourth-place Elizabeth Way.

Bold Script, Art of Almost, Another Time and Amalfi Coast rounded out the order of finish. Theodora B and Runway Dreamer were scratched.

“This filly loves this distance,” said Cox, who conditions the 4-year-old Rideforthecause for owner/breeder Sam-Son Farm. “I think she's run really well this year, she had one race where she was sort of too close to the pace and didn't run the greatest but she's a tough filly. She just hasn't had the opportunity to get the distance very often.”

“She gets a little bit wound and [having her secluded] seems to work really well for her.”

“She had me a little bit nervous, but she definitely sustained it (her rally).”

Moran agreed that getting Rideforthecause to settle was a key to victory.

“She was a little bouncy (before the race) but once we got behind the gate and took her back there, she was actually very relaxed,” said the jockey. “That might have just made the difference with her right there.”

Rideforthecause was notching her fourth career victory after knocking out her third allowance condition in her last start.

The daughter of Candy Ride and Danceforthecause returned $47.20, $14.50 and $9, and combined with Cambier Parc ($3.20, $2.70) for a 4-10 exacta worth $147.80. Court Return ($8.90) completed a 4-10-2 trifecta worth $1,654.90 and Elizabeth Way bottomed a 4-10-2-3 superfecta of $2,959.90 for $1.

The last time OXO Equine’s Cambier Parc (Medaglia d’Oro) faced the starter was in Keeneland’s GI Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup S. last October and the blue-blooded filly looks to mark her return in Saturday’s GII Canadian S. at Woodbine. A front-running winner in the nine-furlong test for 3-year-old fillies, the Chad Brown trainee employed completely opposite tactics when closing from off the pace to score in the GI Del Mar Oaks in August. Earlier last season, she won the GIII Herecomesthebride S. at Gulfstream and the GIII Wonder Again S. at Belmont before finishing third in the GI Belmont Oaks in July. Rafael Hernandez accompanies the 4-year-old for the first time Saturday.

Terra Racing’s Amalfi Coast (Tapizar) hit the board in seven of eight starts during her sophomore campaign, including season closing wins in the grassy Ontario Damsel S. and Carotene S. against Ontario-bred fillies prior to a seven-panel main track score in the Nov. 24 GII Bessarabian S. This term, the homebred finished third in her latest start in the seven-furlong GIII Seaway S. on the Woodbine Tapeta Aug. 16.

Hall of Fame trainer Roger Attfield is already responsible for a trio of Canadian wins and will attempt to secure his fourth Saturday with the duo of Elizabeth Way (Ire) (Frankel {Ire}) and Art of Almost (Dansili {GB}). The former accounted for a pair of wins at Gulfstream, including the GIII The Very One S. in February and subsequently added a score in Woodbine’s GII Nassau S. June 27. Most recently, she finished third in the 10-furlong GII Dance Smartly S. Aug. 15.

“It wasn’t her race at all,” said Attfield, of her most recent performance. “She didn’t really go into it as nicely as she had in all her other races. She didn’t really run her race. She was running off the bridle with her head up. But at least she was third, anyway. She’s coming into this one much better than she was the last one, for sure.”

One position behind her stablemate in the Dance Smartly, Art of Almost finished second in a Churchill Downs optional claimer earlier this spring before adding a win going 8 1/2 furlongs over the E.P. Taylor turf in June. She was fourth in the July 18 GIII Trillium S. prior to her Dance Smartly run.

Art of Almost and Elizabeth Way, both trained by Roger Attfield, will take on eight rivals, including multiple Grade 1 winner Cambier Parc, in Saturday's $250,000 Canadian Stakes presented by the Japan Racing Association (Grade 2), one of four added-money features that complement the 161st running of The Queen's Plate at Woodbine.

A dual hall of fame inductee, Attfield will look for his fourth Canadian crown, having won the 1984 edition with Dundrum Dancer, the 1994 running with Alywow, and the 2010 renewal with Miss Keller.

He'll have a pair of chances to add to his Canadian haul in the 1 1/8-mile stakes race for fillies & mares, three-year-olds and up, contested over the E.P. Taylor Turf Course.

A four-year-old daughter of Dansili (GB), Art of Almost has crafted a 3-3-4 mark from 15 starts for the ownership group of Frederick Seitz, Jon Kelly, Danny Ward, and Dr. Ted Folkerth.

The multiple graded stakes placed miss finished third in a pair of stakes races in 2019, the Dance Smartly (G2), and Pucker Up (G3).

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

Art of Almost heads into the Canadian off back-to-back fourth-place stakes outings, including her most recent engagement, the Dance Smartly on August 15.

What she lacks in size, offered Attfield, is made up for in effort.

“She's the same little tiny herself. She always tries. She's training into the race very well, actually.”

Godolphin-bred Elizabeth Way, a four-year-old daughter of Frankel, is enjoying a fruitful 2020 campaign, going 3-0-2 from six starts.

The chestnut, owned by John McCormack, took all the spoils in The Very One (G3) on February 29 at Gulfstream – her second start of the season – and won the Nassau Stakes (G2) on June 27 at Woodbine.

She arrives at the Canadian off a third in the Dance Smartly.

“It wasn't her race at all,” said Attfield, of the most recent performance. “She didn't really go into it as nicely as she had in all her other races. She didn't really run her race. She was running off the bridle with her head up. But at least she was third, anyway. She's coming into this one much better than she was the last one, for sure.”

Three-time stakes winner Amalfi Coast, who closed out her three-year-old season with a victory in the Bessarabian Stakes (G2), will look to notch her first win in 2020. The daughter of Tapizar comes into the Canadian off a third-place effort in the Seaway (G3) on August 16.

The Terra Racing homebred, trained by Kevin Attard (who won the past two editions with Starship Jubilee), is 4-2-2 from 11 lifetime starts.

Hoolie Racing Stable's multiple graded stakes placed Another Time has four wins, a second and three thirds from 12 starts.

Trained by Barbara Minshall, the four-year-old daughter of Munnings was second in this year's Nassau (G2), third in the Trillium (G3) and most recently, fourth in the Seaway (G3).

Bold Script, a four-year-old daughter of Speightstown, is 3-6-4 from 16 outings for owner and breeder Chiefswood Stables.

The Ontario-bred grey, trained by Stuart Simon, has contested four graded events, including a pair of third-place efforts in the 2018 Natalma (G1) and 2019 Selene (G3). She was the runner-up in the 2019 Bison City.

Cambier Parc, who last raced nearly a year ago, has won three of her past four starts – including back-to-back Grade 1 triumphs – for OXO Equine and trainer Chad Brown.

The four-year-old daughter of Medaglia d'Oro took the Del Mar Oaks last August and followed it up with a victory in the Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup in October.

“I appreciate Larry Best giving me the opportunity with this horse,” Brown said after the Queen Elizabeth win. “She's a really well-bred, great-looking horse that anyone would love to have. I'm lucky to have her.”

Bred in Kentucky by Bonne Chance Farm, she is out of 2007 Canadian Horse of the Year and Triple Tiara winner Sealy Hill, who has also produced Canadian champion sprinter and Grade 2 winner Hillaby and Grade 3 winners Belle Hill and Gale Force.

Ivan Dalos' homebred Court Return goes for the natural hat trick after a romp on July 2 at Woodbine, followed by an Eternal Search Stakes triumph on August 22.

Trained by Josie Carroll, the four-year-old daughter of Court Vision was fourth in last year's Wonder Where Stakes at Woodbine.

Sam-Son Farm homebred Rideforthecause will be making her first stakes appearance since contesting the Tropical Park Oaks last December at Gulfstream.

The four-year-old daughter of Candy Ride is 3-0-1 from nine career starts. She arrives at the Canadian off a rallying score on August 1 at Woodbine, a 1 ½-length win at 1 1/16 miles over the Toronto oval's Inner Turf.

Bred and owned by Craig Singer, Runway Dreamer rallied from second-last at the quarter-mile mark to win an 11-horse 1 1/16-mile Inner Turf race on August 22.

Trained by Josie Carroll, the three-year-old daughter of Candy Ride has contested six of her career races at Woodbine, with the other two coming at Gulfstream.

This will be her third stakes appearance.

Classic Stamp (2004, 2005) and reigning Canadian Horse of the Year Starship Jubilee (2018, 2019) are the only two-time winners of the Canadian. Sam-Son Farm leads all owners with four wins, and Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame inductee Robin Platts tops all riders with five victories.

The Canadian Stakes, which is the third leg of Woodbine's Ladies of the Lawn bonus series, precedes the $1 million Queen's Plate, as the ninth of 13 races. The $250,000 Bison City Stakes, second jewel in the Canadian Triple Tiara series, goes as race eight. The $100,000 King Corrie (race two) and $100,00 Ruling Angel (race 12) overnight stakes are also on tap Saturday. First race post time is 12:30 p.m.

$250,000 Canadian Stakes (Grade 2)

Post – Horse – Jockey – Trainer – Morning Line

1 – Theodora B. – Kazushi Kimura – Michael Dickinson – 5-1

2 – Court Return – Luis Contreras – Josie Carroll – 20-1

3 – Elizabeth Way – Emma-Jayne Wilson – Roger Attfield – 4-1

4 – Rideforthecause – Davy Moran – Gail Cox – 20-1

5 – Another Time – Steven Bahen – Barbara Minshall – 12-1

6 – Amalfi Coast – Justin Stein – Kevin Attard – 6-1

7 – Runway Dreamer – Slade Callaghan – Josie Carroll – 20-1

8 – Bold Script – Patrick Husbands – Stuart Simon – 20-1

9 – Art of Almost – Daisuke Fukumoto – Roger Attfield – 15-1

10 – Cambier Parc – Rafael Hernandez – Chad Brown – 6-5

DANGEROUS DUO FOR BROWN
7th-BEL, $64K, Msw, 3yo/up, f/m, 1mT, 4:32p.m.
Turf maestro Chad Brown unveils a dangerous duo here, including 2019 OBS April $440,000 Peter Brant purchase DOVIMA (Union Rags), who caught the eye with a :20 4/5 breeze at that sale. With three bullets at Payson out of her last five works, the half to MGSW Secret Gypsy (Sea of Secrets) looks to be sitting on go. Brown also brings firster Cost Benefit (GB) (Dansili {GB}), who brought just 40,000 guineas from Klaravich Stables as a Tattersalls October yearling, but sports turf quality throughout her family. Her dam is a half to European champion Zomaradah (GB) (Deploy {GB}), who produced MG1SW and leading European sire Dubawi (Ire) (Dubai Millennium {GB}), while an earlier generation was responsible for European champion and Breeders’ Cup winner In the Wings (GB) (Sadler’s Wells). Morning line longshot (20-1) Hill d’Oro (Medaglia d’Oro) is a full-sister to last year’s GI Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup S. and GI Del Mar Oaks winner, Cambier Parc. Three other half-sisters are all graded winners, while their dam, Sealy Hill (Point Given), was named Horse of the Year in Canada just over a decade ago. Hill d’Oro was a $425,000 Keeneland September purchase and will wear the colors of Whisper Hill Farm.

RISING STARS CLASH
10th-CD, $81K, AOC, 3yo, f, 6 1/2f, 5:50p.m.
Two ‘TDN Rising Stars’ take center stage in a face-off beneath the Twin Spires. SCOLDING (Carpe Diem) geared down to win by six lengths in her ultra-impressive May 2 Oaklawn debut and secure an 80 Beyer. The $475,000 OBS April (:20 3/5) graduate races for Phoenix Thoroughbred III and was the second-priciest juvenile buy of her sire’s first crop. Remanded (Elusive Quality) picked off rivals in an Arazi-style move for her ‘Rising Star’ debut Feb. 16 at Gulfstream and she’s kept up a steady work tab since. Trained by Cherie DeVaux for the partnership of her husband, David Ingordo, and Manganaro Bloodstock, the $75,000 Keeneland September yearling was a $190,000 buyback at OBS April (:10 1/5).
