“I looked after Street Sense for his first season in 2008 in Australia,” said stallion manager Graham Lovatt. “Has as much character in a stallion that I've ever worked with. He'll 'ask' for a carrot or a treat when you walk by and will actually lift a leg up as a prompt. He'll know when his pin is out of his stall door and he'll open it up with his nose/muzzle to get his carrot. He's very respectful. Not a mean bone in his body. I've never known him to bite or kick anyone out of malice.”

The 54-year-old was booked early Wednesday evening and later released on a $1,000 bond.

This is Borel's second DWI incident in the past three years, having been charged for same in Southern Indiana in 2019. In Arkansas, reports DRF, “a second-offense DWI within five years of the first results in at least seven days or up to a year in jail, though a judge can waive jail time for 'good cause' and order community service instead.”

Ensconced in the Hall of Fame in 2013, Borel last rode at Churchill Downs on May 21, riding two trainees for his wife, Renay Borel. He won the third race aboard Jack Van Berg, and finished second in the sixth with Bebop Shoes. Thus far this year, Borel has ridden four winners from 31 starters, primarily at Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs.

Renay Borel is scheduled to send out two horses, including defending champion K J's Nobility in the Nodouble, which honors the 1968 Arkansas Derby winner, the country's two-time champion older horse (1969 and 1970) and leading Arkansas-bred money winner in history ($846,749).

Last Sunday, Calvin Borel recorded his first victory of the meeting, and first for his wife in Hot Springs, aboard Jack Van Berg. Renay Borel, a former exercise rider for Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas, inherited a small string of horses after Calvin Borel's older brother, Cecil, retired – again – from training following a runner-up finish by K J's Nobility in the $165,000 Arkansas Breeders' Championship Stakes last May at Oaklawn. Renay Borel had been Cecil Borel's assistant. Jack Van Berg was her second victory of the meeting and fourth overall.

“Everything's going good,” Renay Borel, 33, said Wednesday morning. “Take it one day at a time.”

Owned by Carson McCord of Hot Springs, K J's Nobility will break from the rail Saturday in search of his first victory since last year's Nodouble. The 7-year-old gelding exits a flat fifth-place finish as the favorite in a March 12 state-bred allowance sprint under Calvin Borel, his regular rider.

“I think it was because of the freeze,” Renay Borel said, referring to Oaklawn losing 11 days of training (Feb. 12-22) to severe winter weather. “I think the freeze had a lot to do with it. It kind of set us back a little bit. I kind of look at that race more as a little tune-up race, more than anything. So, if everything goes according to plan, I believe he'll be tough, regardless. It doesn't matter what post position he's in.”

Claimed by McCord for $25,000 in July 2018 at Indiana Grand, K J's Nobility has bankrolled $451,354 in a 33-race career.

Renay Borel is also scheduled to send out her first career Oaklawn winner, Bebop Shoes, for McCord in the Nodouble. Bebop Shoes was a sharp March 7 state-bred allowance winner in his last start.

“It's up to the owner whether she wants to run him in the Nodouble or not,” Renay Borel said. “Personally, I believe he fits. He's doing really good; training like a beast. We'll see.”

Renay Borel has never had a stakes starter since saddling her first horse in the fall of 2019. Calvin Borel has 52 career Oaklawn stakes victories and Jack Van Berg marked his 971st victory overall in Hot Springs. He was Oaklawn's leading rider in 1995 and 2001. Pat Day (a record 1,264) and Larry Snyder are the only riders in Oaklawn history with 1,000 career victories.

“We're going to try like hell,” Calvin Borel, 54, said with a laugh when asked about reaching 1,000. “Taking it day by day.”

As for Cecil Borel, the remaining members of Team Borel said he's living on Lake Fork Reservoir, about 70 miles east of Dallas. It's billed the premier trophy largemouth bass lake in Texas.

Cecil Borel, who has a history of heart problems, initially retired from training in August 2014 to care for his ailing wife, Debbie, a former Oaklawn racing official who died Jan. 1, 2015. Borel came out of retirement at the 2019 Oaklawn meeting, recording his first victory in approximately 4 ½ years with K J's Nobility in a state-bred allowance sprint that April. Borel, citing health issues, stepped away from training in the fall of 2019 (Renay Borel recorded her first career victory after inheriting his handful of runners) before returning as the trainer of record for the 2020 Oaklawn meet. Borel was 66 when he saddled K J's Nobility in the Arkansas Breeders' Championship Stakes.

“I don't know if there will be another comeback,” Renay Borel said. “You'll have to get ahold of him and ask him if that's what he wants to do right now. I believe he's having fun fishing.”

Known as an exhaustive caretaker, Cecil Borel authored a sparkling 7-2-3 record from just 17 starters last year at Oaklawn. Renay Borel has six horses at Oaklawn and is off to a solid start in 2021, with two victories and a third from nine starts at the meeting through Sunday.

“I learned everything from him,” Renay Borel said. “I try to keep my schedule the same as what he would do. You don't fix something that's not broke.”

Probable post time for the Nodouble Breeders' Stakes, the 10th of 11 races, is 5:52 p.m. (Central). Racing begins Saturday at 1 p.m. Weather permitting, the infield will be open.

The next equation goes like this: 3 + 697 = 700. That's because Court entered Sunday needing three victories to become just the sixth jockey in Oaklawn history to reach 700.

“I'm aware of it,” Court, 60, said late Thursday afternoon. “Actually, I was thinking about the 4,200 wins when I was riding down the lane. I was like, 'No one is taking this one away from me.' When I went to 4,200, I felt as good as I ever did.”

Court was referring to Catholic Guilt's front-running 9 ½-length victory in the first race March 14, which nudged the jockey's overall career total to 4,200. That ranks 63^rd in North American history, according to Equibase, racing's official data gathering organization. Court won another race on the card to reach another milestone, surpassing $20 million in career purse earnings at Oaklawn with the riding double that came a little more than 40 years after his first in Hot Springs.

Now, Court is poised to join Hall of Famers Pat Day and Calvin Borel, the late Larry Snyder, John Lively and Tim Doocy as the only riders in Oaklawn history to reach 700 career victories. Day holds the Oaklawn record for career victories (1,264).

“I just like Oaklawn,” Court said. “I like the town, the quality of racing. Just the allure keeps bringing me back. Many times, I've struggled, but I enjoy being here. I love winning here, I love being here.”

Court's first Oaklawn victory came Feb. 16, 1981, aboard Velvet Chieftain for future Hall of Fame trainer Shug McGaughey and prominent Texas owner Anne Dunigan (Bacacita Farm). Court, who rode his first career winner in 1980, was Oaklawn's leading apprentice jockey in 1981 with 10 victories. Save a stint in Southern California during the mid to late 2000s, Court has rarely missed an Oaklawn meet in the last four decades.

Illustrating the breadth of Court's career, Oaklawn's 1981 riding colony included Lively (he retired in 1991), Snyder (he retired in 1994) and Doocy (he retired in 2009). Day's first year as an Oaklawn regular was 1982. He won 12 consecutive Oaklawn riding titles (1983-1994) before retiring in 2005. Borel, 54, is still active and based at Oaklawn.

Court was Oaklawn's leading rider in 2000 and won consecutive runnings of Oaklawn's $1 million Arkansas Derby (G1) in 2010 and 2011 with Line of David and Archarcharch, respectively. Court likely would have already eclipsed 700 victories at Oaklawn if he hadn't missed most of the 2020 meeting because of rib and lung injuries suffered in an accident going to the gate before a race. Injury free in 2021, Court had rebounded with nine victories through Saturday, including two aboard Kentucky Oaks candidate Will's Secret for breeder/owner Willis Horton of Marshall, Ark., and trainer Dallas Stewart. Will's Secret won the $200,000 Martha Washington Stakes Jan. 30 and the $300,000 Honeybee Stakes (G3) March 6.

“If everyone stays healthy and we're still having fun, the Oaks is the target for the short term,” Court said. “From there, I see her finishing up in Breeders' Cups. It's exciting.”

Horton has been among Court's biggest supporters the last decade. They teamed to capture Oaklawn's $600,000 Rebel Stakes (G2) in 2013 with eventual 3-year-old Eclipse Award-winning male Will Take Charge (the sire of Will's Secret), 2015 Martha Washington with Eclipse Award winner Take Charge Brandi and the first division of the 2019 Rebel with Long Range Toddy. Court, then 58, was reportedly the oldest jockey to ever ride in the Kentucky Derby when he finished 16^th aboard Long Range Toddy in 2019.

“It's very enjoyable to see what he's doing for the Hortons,” said Stewart, adding he was Court's valet in the mid-1980s at Louisiana Downs. “He's always been a great rider and a great competitor. He loves the game and he loves his job. But he just steps his game up for the Hortons and that's a plus for me.”

Will's Secret is among 28 nominees to the $600,000 Fantasy Stakes (G3) April 3 at Oaklawn. The 1 1/16-mile Fantasy is a major prep for the $1.25 million Kentucky Oaks (G1) – the nation's biggest race for 3-year-old fillies – April 30 at Churchill Downs. Will's Secret worked a half-mile in :49.20 Saturday at Fair Grounds, where she has been based this year.

Court, in his pursuit of 700, was named on five horses Sunday. Court's career numbers through Saturday at Oaklawn included 6,367 (mounts), 697 (victories), $20,030,356 (purse earnings) and 35 (stakes victories).

Court said he plans to keep making math simple.

“No thoughts of retirement at this time,” Court said. “I'm going to continue to ride. I'm enjoying it. We always have the joy until that day comes. Like Pat Day, he and I had that discussion. He said one day he went and rode a race, a little stake, and said he didn't enjoy it. It was no fun. He was like, 'Maybe it's time to hang it up.' I was like, 'Man, I don't want to hit that wall.' You can see I still have fun out there. I have fun in the morning, I have fun in the room. Just going to continue to enjoy it until the day I know it's time to step away. I don't want an injury to take me out, some tragedy, that makes the decision for me. I want to be able to say, 'OK, you've reached the point and it's time to step away.' ”

Terry Thompson, who entered Sunday with 653 career Oaklawn victories, and Luis Quinonez (608) are also riding at the 2021 meeting that ends May 1.
