The catalogue for the first of this year's European two-year-old sales is now online, with 180 lots catalogued for the Tattersalls Craven Breeze-up Sale set to be sold on April 16 and 17.

With the high-class dual Group 1 winner Vandeek (GB) (Havana Grey {GB}) as its poster boy for last year, the Craven sale has been represented by some notable graduates in recent seasons, including the Classic winners Native Trail (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) and Cachet (Ire) (Aclaim {Ire}). The latter's half-brother by Mehmas (Ire) is among those on offer this year.

Plenty of other well-bred horses are contained in this year's book which boasts half-siblings to 29 Group or Listed winners, induing another Mehmas colt who is a half-brother to the G2 Coventry S. winner River Tiber (Ire) (Wootton Bassett {GB}). Also included is a Siyouni (Fr) half-brother to Grade III-winning sire Demarchelier (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), who is out of a sister to Group 1 winners Yesterday (Ire) and Quarter Moon (Ire).

As already referenced in a recent TDN feature on the members of the final crop of multiple champion sire Galileo (Ire), last year's sale-topping consignor, Glending Stables, will offer a Galileo three-parts brother to Listed winner Hidden Dimples (GB) (Frankel {GB}).

All 180 horses in the catalogue are eligible for the £250,000 Tattersalls Royal Ascot/Group 1 Bonus. The scheme offers a £125,000 bonus for the first Craven Breeze-up winner of any of the six two-year-old races at the Royal Meeting and an additional £125,000 bonus to the first Craven Breeze-up winner of any of the 15 European Group 1 races open to two-year-olds.

Commenting on the catalogue, Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony said, “The Tattersalls Craven Breeze-up Sale's market leading status was reinforced again in 2023 with another exceptional year on the racecourse following the Craven Classic double of Native Trail and Cachet in 2022. The £125,000 Tattersalls Craven Group 1 Bonus was won for the second time in three years by Vandeek, whose two spectacular Group 1 victories saw him crowned the highest rated British trained two-year-old, following in the footsteps of European Champion Two-Year-Old Native Trail. The sale produced more Group and Listed winners in 2023 than any other European breeze-up sale, and the unrivalled racecourse results are testament to the outstanding quality that Europe's leading breeze-up consignors offer year after year. Their support has again resulted in a catalogue with quality in abundance, which combined with unrivalled bonuses on offer makes the Tattersalls Craven Breeze Up Sale a compelling prospect for both domestic and overseas buyers.”

Horses in the sale will breeze on Newmarket's Rowley Mile Racecourse on Monday, April 15 starting from 9.30am. The sale will take place at Park Paddocks after racing on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Cachet (Ire) (Aclaim {Ire}), the winner of last season's 1000 Guineas, has been retired and will be seen next in the Tattersalls December Mares Sale.

The filly, owned by Highclere Thoroughbred Racing, gave Newmarket trainer George Boughey his first Classic success at the Rowley Mile and was narrowly denied a follow-up victory in France when second by a head to Mangoustine (Fr) (Dark Angel {Ire}) in the G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches.

Cachet picked up an injury when fifth in the G1 Coronation S. at Royal Ascot the following month and was off the track for 457 days before resuming at Doncaster this September. Her comeback run in the G3 Sceptre Fillies' S. saw her take fourth place, before finishing down the field in the G1 Prix de la Foret on Arc day.

“It didn't go to plan as she's a filly who likes to run on the front end, was drawn a bit wide and never really got into a position,” said Boughey of Cachet's final start.

“She will head to the mares' sale at Tattersalls later this year and I have no doubt she will become a super mum. If she could produce something half as good as her then we will all be very proud.”

He added, “She's a filly who has been an absolute star for us. She's my first Group 1 winner and first Classic winner.”

Bred by John Bourke of Hyde Park Stud from the Teofilo (Ire) mare Poyle Sophie (GB), Cachet was bought back when offered as a yearling by her breeder and was later sent to the Craven Breeze-up Sale, where she was bought by John and Jake Warren's Highclere Agency for 60,000gns.

Boughey continued, “In this game she was a relatively inexpensive breeze-up purchase who went on to win a Classic. She's got 20 owners and they have all had an amazing time with her.

“We will keep trying to find another one for them, but it is very hard to do so. She was a real gem and they are very hard to find.”

If anyone had been chalking John Bourke's Classic success down to pure fluke, well then they may have been forced to reevaluate the Hyde Park Stud operator's method to breeding high-class horses on a budget after Haatem (Ire) (Phoenix Of Spain {Ire}) stormed to G2 Vintage S. glory at Goodwood on Tuesday.

Bourke famously bought Poyle Sophie (GB) (Teofilo {Ire}) carrying last year's 1,000 Guineas winner Cachet (Ire) (Aclaim {Ire}) for just 3,000gns at the Tattersalls December Mares Sale in 2018.

Haatem is the latest triumph for his approach to sourcing mares on a budget, given he shelled out just 11,000gns for Hard Walnut (Ire) (Cape Cross {Ire}), the dam of the Richard Hannon-trained runner at the same sale in 2020.

Speaking shortly after the Goodwood win, Bourke said, “It's brilliant. I'm watching the racing at home here and I've watched the replay about five times already! I was very worried when Iberian (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) appeared on the outside but Haatem was very good.

“He's a tough horse and this was his sixth run. Listen, he's a good solid horse and I have the mare here still. She's in foal to Far Above (Ire) and is a strong, good-looking mare but she lacks a bit of size. Far Above is a fast and scopey horse so the cross should work well. She has an Inns Of Court (Ire) filly at foot as well.”

Haatem was consigned by Sherbourne Lodge at Book 2 at Tattersalls last year. He sold to Peter and Ross Doyle on behalf of Sheikh Abdullah Almalek Alsabah for 27,000gns and has gone from strength to strength for the Hannon team.

Bourke commented, “I sold Haatem as a yearling through Sherbourne Lodge at Book 2. I was buying yearlings at Book 2 and Book 3 so it's very hard to buy and sell at the same time. That's why he went through with Sherbourne Lodge. I just want to thank Sherbourne Lodge, Richard Hannon and Peter and Ross Doyle for everything. They've all done a brilliant job.”

But the real success story here, according to Bourke, is Haatem's sire Phoenix Of Spain. The Irish National Stud resident has had an electric start at stud, on the strength of which Bourke has decided to send him two mares next year, including Hard Walnut.

Speaking about what attracted him to Hard Walnut in the first place, he recalled, “The match suited because Phoenix Of Spain is a big scopey horse and Hard Walnut isn't the biggest herself. She's a very strong, good-looking mare but she does lack a bit of size.

“I have to say, I'd be respecting everything that Phoenix Of Spain is doing. Even if I'd nothing to do with Haatem, what Phoenix Of Spain is doing is quite impressive. I've a mare in foal to him on the farm and I am going to send him two mares next year as well.”

Bourke added, “Hard Walnut will go back to him next year, that's if they do me a good deal! Phoenix Of Spain was a very good horse himself but what he is doing now wasn't really scripted because he is more of a horse to produce two-year-olds for the second half of the season.

“Haatem was unlucky in the Woodcote at Epsom. He was left in the stalls and still managed to finish third. He was fifth in the Coventry and was second to a machine in City Of Troy (Justify) in the Superlative Stakes at Newmarket so he deserved his Group 2 win today.”

Bourke may have an uncanny knack when it comes to pulling a rabbit out of the hat at the sales but you won't see him taking any credit for the whirlwind success the farm has enjoyed in recent years.

Asked to put the past two years into words, he said, “I'm going to start stuttering and stammering now! We all work hard here on the farm and we just like to buy those good-looking, fast and strong mares. For me, just because you spend a hundred grand on a mare doesn't mean you are going to get paid for the foals in year one or two.

“I like these trading mares if I can use that word. Some people call them second-hand mares but you just have to cover them right and hope for the best. There are some good farms in Westmeath. We have Tally-Ho Stud and Lynn Lodge around here so it's a good area.”

Providing an update on the most famous mare on the farm, Poyle Sophie, he added, “She foaled at the end of April but didn't go back in foal so we left her off for the year. I have a Mehmas (Ire) colt going to Book 1 out of her and she has a Mehmas filly foal on the ground. We'll sell the colt first and then we will see what we do with the filly. We have a nice bunch of mares to cover next season.”

NEWMARKET, UK–George Boughey is aiming to build on his two winners at Royal Ascot last year by taking a team of around 20 to next week's meeting, led by the G2 Coventry S. favourite Asadna (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}).

Sheikh Abdullah Almalek Alsabah's colt, who earned a TDN Rising Star with his 12-length win at Ripon on his sole start, will be ridden by William Buick, who partnered him in a gallop on Tuesday morning. Buick will also ride Soprano (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}) in the G3 Albany S.

“The two-year-olds will probably be leading the charge,” said Boughey, who also plans to send Muqtahem (Ire) (Soldier's Call {Ire}) to either the G2 Norfolk S. or Windsor Castle S., and Graceful Thunder (GB) (Havana Grey {GB}) for the G2 Queen Mary S.

“Asadna was very good at Chelmsford in a piece of work the other day. Oisin Murphy rode him there and William rode him this morning and was very happy.

“He has a super attitude. I think we will watch him walk round the paddock ahead of the Coventry like he is here in the paddock. He'll go there with a good chance.

“He just has an amazing temperament. He doesn't sweat, he doesn't do anything wrong. He's a very sound horse. He just loves his work.”

Hosting owners and press at his stable on Tuesday morning, Boughey took all of his Ascot hopefuls onto the nearby watered gallop alongside the Rowley Mile. Soprano, owned by Highclere Thoroughbred Racing, won at Newmarket on Guineas weekend, beating Midnight Affair (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}), who subsequently won Saturday's Hilary Needler Trophy at Beverley.

“Soprano was very good at Newmarket,” Boughey added. “She's certainly not a five-furlong horse. When she steps up in trip we'll see a better filly.”

Amo Racing's retained jockey Kevin Stott was aboard Graceful Thunder, a winner on debut at Sandown, alongside Pat Cosgrave and Pontefract winner Muqtahem, who could bid to emulate his sire Soldier's Call by winning the Listed Windsor Castle S.

“The two-year-olds are still learning. We worked six, and four of them will go to Ascot,” Boughey said.

“I didn't find anything out, necessarily. They are just teaching each other as they go along. Asadna, Soprano, Muqtahem, Graceful Thunder, they are all going to their respective races and it was all pretty straightforward work, but they all pleased me.”

Among his older horses, Boughey has two candidates for the G1 Commonwealth Cup in Al Dasim (Ire) (Harry Angel {Ire}) and Believing (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}), who each have Group 3 wins to their credit already this year, in Dubai and France respectively.

He said of Al Dasim, “He was meant to go to the Sandy Lane and we just weren't happy with the ground that day for him. He needs fast ground and I don't think we'll see the same horse at Ascot if we do get the rain. His work on fast ground is much better. He worked well on the watered gallop with a bit of ease in the ground and he's in good shape; I couldn't be happier with him.”

Having saddled both Inver Park (GB) (Pivotal {GB}) and Missed The Cut (Quality Road) to win at Royal Ascot last year, Boughey, who now has just over 100 horses across three yards in Newmarket, is understandably hungry for more success.

He added, “This is by far the best team we've had [going to Ascot] so far. It's the international stage. We're trying to find horses to run around the world, everyone's there and it really is the be-all-and-end-all for us at this time of the year. Obviously the better two-year-old races happen towards the end of the year but at the moment this is what everyone is gearing up to. It's the feature event.”

The trainer notched an important first Classic win in 2022 with Cachet (Ire) (Aclaim {Ire}) in the 1,000 Guineas, and the Highclere-owned filly has not raced since running at Royal Ascot last year.

“Cachet looks better than she has all spring,” Boughey noted. “It wasn't fair to take her straight to Royal Ascot after a year off the track, running six furlongs for the first time, and I also didn't think it was fair to run her in a Group 2 over a mile, not having been a convincing stayer on the stiff track.

“I haven't really got a plan at the moment. She's training away nicely, but at the end of the day, her main target is a mares' sale at the end of the year.

“She wasn't right to go to a sale at the end of last year and we will try to have her as busy as she can be into December, but I'm not going to rush her. She's a valuable filly and doesn't really need to prove anything else.”

He added, “She has done a couple of bits [of work], but she's not sparkled yet and we know what she can do, so we've given her plenty of time. I don't know why she hasn't [sparkled]. It's very warm now and she is starting to thrive, but it has been a pretty hard spring for them and she just hasn't for some reason.”

It's that time of year again, the Tattersalls Craven Breeze Up Sale–where whispers of Royal Ascot horses and potential breeze-up sensations fills the air.

There's scarcely anything more exciting than the eve of a major sale and they don't come much bigger than the Craven.

This is where Classic winners Native Trail (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) and Cachet (Ire) (Aclaim {Ire}) were found and the roll of honour does not stop there. Everything is up for grabs at Tattersalls over the next two days and few people know this better than Norman Williamson, who sold Irish 2,000 Guineas winner Native Trail to Godolphin here in 2021.

Williamson offers three colts through his hugely successful Oak Tree Farm operation this year–by Mehmas (Ire), No Nay Never and Blue Point (Ire), hotly tipped for first-season sire honours by some of the finest minds in the game.

And the man with the Midas Touch reports footfall ahead of the sale to be encouraging.

Williamson said, “We've got three nice colts here. The horses are trotting up sound after the breeze, which is a huge relief because, until you get to this stage, you haven't jumped through the hoops.”

He added, “The bar keeps lifting and so does the standard of horses at the breeze-ups. Obviously, it's easy to see that by the results. But the standard has been lifted by the breeze-up consignors year after year.

“There's only a small bunch of consignors but, John Cullinane always says it, we're punching above our weight. It seems to be working–the standard of breezing is getting so high and so too is the competition. That means it costs a lot of money to be competitive and therefore the risks are getting higher. You have to have your ducks in a row.”

Native Trail was not the only Classic winner to benefit from Williamson's tutelage, as Roger Varian's St Leger hero Eldar Eldarov (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) also came through the Oak Tree Farm breeze-up system at Arqana.

Therefore, it was hardly surprising that Williamson's corner down at the Highflyer Paddocks on the sale grounds was one of the busiest going and, in between shows to top bloodstock agents Mark McStay, Peter and Ross Doyle and BBA Ireland's Michael Donohoe, he outlined his hopes about the sale that kicks off at 5.30pm on Tuesday.

“Mehmas and No Nay Never are two great sires and Mehmas is upgrading his mares. This Mehmas [lot 2] of mine has an excellent pedigree being a half-brother to Insinuendo (Ire) (Gleneagles {Ire}), who won the Group 3 [Park Express S.] for Willie McCreery at the Curragh the other day. He's got lots going for him and is a real good-looking horse. The No Nay Never [118] is a big horse but did a beautiful breeze. And of course all of the talk is for Blue Point–he's already had his winners and I think it was quite obvious why there is so much talk about the sire watching them breeze. They are quick and my horse is fast. The unofficial clock says he's [199] very fast so let's hope we get rewarded.”

He added, “I have only one horse for day one and, usually at this sale, the buyers don't normally look at the day one and day two horses together, but they seem to be looking at every horse today which is a good sign. I'd have to say that, for the evening of the breeze day, we've been very busy. We haven't seen many international buyers around but we're hoping to see them tomorrow.”

Roderic Kavanagh | Tattersalls

It shouldn't go unnoticed that the fingerprints of Peter and Antoinette Kavanagh's Kildaragh Stud are all over the Native Trail success story, given they pinhooked the Classic winner as a foal to yearling. That is rather apt, as their son Roderic stands on the brink of recording notable success at this year's Craven Breeze-Up Sale after two of his Glending Stables-drafted colts topped the unofficial times. Put simply, Kavanagh can stick his chest out on Tuesday knowing he has two blisteringly quick colts on his hands, by Equiano (Fr) and Havana Grey (GB), respectively.

What's more interesting is that the Equiano is a full-brother to the brilliant three-time Group 1-winning sprinter The Tin Man (GB).

“He was very professional–just enjoys doing it and has always been the same,” Kavanagh said of the Equiano colt [9]. “He's very like his dad with probably a bit more motion. In fairness, a lot of the credit has to go to everyone in Newsells Park Stud. When I went down to look at their horses at Book 2 here in October, I asked them if there was anything getting missed out of all of their horses. They put forward the Equiano, in fairness to them. The mare [Persario (GB) (Bishop Of Cashel {GB})] is getting on in years but she doesn't miss too often. I'd say this is a very talented horse, hopefully.”

He added, “The Havana Grey [198] is another horse who has shown an awful lot of ability. They showed up on the day and the man [Gordon Power] riding them was a big help–I think he rode four of the top six times.

“We're still a million miles away and there's lots of water to flow under the bridge between now and the sale but hopefully it comes together. There's no reason why it won't because a lot of the right people are here and, when we have the models to match up with the performances, I think we should be okay.”

So, any nerves?

“After a good day like today, you wouldn't be as nervous. But hopefully it'll come together. They're not standing us a fortune, you know, they were 52,000gns and 42,000gns each, so I think we should be okay.

“We're breezing horses for five or six years now and we've had a good run. We breezed Gis A Sub (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}), who was second in the Gimcrack, and we also had a good horse called Tuscan (Ire) (Churchill {Ire}), who was rated 105. In a short space of time we've had a few good ones.”

The same can be said for the Craven Sale on the whole, which is something the ever-enthusiastic Jimmy George, marketing director at Tattersalls, was keen to get across on Monday evening.

“The breeze was well-attended and thankfully the weather was kind to us,” he said in a typically upbeat fashion. “There are some very smart two-year-olds in the sale and they breezed very well so all of the ingredients are in place for a good sale. The sale ground was pretty busy after the breeze and we're looking forward to tomorrow now.

“The racecourse is the best possible barometer to measure any sale on and the results from the Craven Sale have been pretty spectacular in recent years, not least with Native Trail and Cachet winning Classics last season. That is the best possible advertisement for the Craven Sale which continues to go from strength to strength.”

George added, “It should also be said that it doesn't go unnoticed the bonuses that are on offer to buyers at the Craven Sale. For every Class 4 novice or better, there is an extra £15,000 bonus on top of the prize-money and for any two-year-old who goes on to win at Royal Ascot or indeed in any Group 1 race, there are hefty bonuses to be won as well. That has certainly caught the imagination.

“We have a pretty diverse crew of buyers in attendance, which is great to see. We have purchasers from America, some Japanese interests, representation from the Gulf and Hong Kong and broader Europe.”

The Tattersalls Craven Breeze-up Sale is flying high with two Classic winners to its credit in 2022 and the catalogue for this year's season-opener for juvenile sales in Europe has just been released, featuring 202 horses.

Both Native Trail (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) and Cachet (Ire) (Aclaim {Ire}) had strutted their stuff alongside the Rowley Mile when being offered for sale in 2021. The former, bought by Godolphin for 210,000gns, returned there to win the G1 Darley Dewhurst S. en route to being crowned European champion 2-year-old, and found only his stablemate Coroebus (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) too good for him when contesting the 2000 Guineas. However, he gained his own Classic laurels later that month when winning the Irish 2000 Guineas.

Cachet broke her maiden at Newmarket a month after being bought by Highclere Thoroughbred Racing for 60,000gns at the Craven Sale, and she gained black type on the Rowley Mile in her juvenile season before returning last year to win the G3 Nell Gwyn S. followed by the 1000 Guineas. They were but two of 37 stakes-performing Craven graduates on the racecourse last year.

Among this year's entrants are full-brothers to Group 1-winning sprinters The Tin Man (GB) (Equiano {Fr}) (lot 9) and Wooded (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) (lot 153), offered by Glending Stables and Aguiar Bloodstock, respectively. Just two Kingman (GB) colts are catalogued for sale, one being a half-brother to the Derby and Arc winner Golden Horn (GB) (Cape Cross {Ire}) (lot 151), offered by Malcolm Bastard, and the other being a son of the Group/Grade 3 winner Stellar Path (Fr) (Astronomer Royal) (lot 63).

A half-sister to Lezoo (GB) (Zoustar {Aus}) (lot 38), an October Book 3 and Arqana Breeze-up graduate who went on to win last season's G1 Cheveley Park S., is also catalogued. Like Lezoo, the daughter of Territories (Ire) will be consigned by Tally-Ho Stud, who sold the top two lots at last year's sale and have a draft of 10 this time around.

Eleven juveniles by last year's leading first-season sire Havana Grey (GB) have been catalogued, along with one by his sire Havana Gold (Ire) (lot 159), who died last week at Tweenhills Stud. There are also five colts in the sale by No Nay Never, whose juveniles of 2022 were led by the top-class duo of Blackbeard (Ire) and Little Big Bear (Ire).

Among the sires who will be bidding for leading freshman honours this year are Masar (Ire), Blue Point (Ire), Invincible Army (Ire), Inns of Court (Ire), Too Darn Hot (GB), Land Force (Ire), Magna Grecia (Ire), Soldier's Call (GB), Advertise (GB) and Calyx (GB), all of whom have representatives in the Craven catalogue.

As ever, there is a decent smattering of American-sourced youngsters being lined up for the sale. These include Powerstown Stud's colt by Medaglia d'Oro (lot 106) who is the first foal of the GI Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint winner Belvoir Bay (GB) (Equiano {Fr}), while Lynn Lodge Stud consigns an American Pharoah colt out of a winning daughter of Grade II winner Lady At Peace (Lord At War {Arg}) (lot 181).

Commenting on the release of the catalogue, Edmond Mahony, chairman of Tattersalls, said, “The Tattersalls Craven Breeze-up Sale's market-leading status has been reinforced by exceptional results on the racecourse. [The] 2021 Champion Two-Year-Old Native Trail won the 2022 Tattersalls Irish 2000 Guineas to complete a Classic Craven double following Cachet's victory in the 1000 Guineas, whilst last year's sale has produced twice as many group/listed performers as any other 2022 European breeze-up sale, a testament to the continued strong support of breeze-up consignors. This year's catalogue has both quality and quantity in abundance and with the unrivalled bonuses on offer the Tattersalls Craven Breeze-up Sale looks certain to attract a broad cross section of domestic and international buyers.”

As referenced, the 202 horses put forward for this year's sale are all eligible for the Tattersalls Royal Ascot/Group 1 bonus which offers £125,000 for any graduate of the sale who becomes the first to win one of the six juvenile races at the royal meeting, and another £125,000 for the first to win one of 15 Group 1 races for 2-year-olds in Europe. These run in tandem with the established £15,000 Tattersalls Craven Breeze-up Bonus.

Kicking off a thrilling week of action in Newmarket featuring Classic trials at the three-day Craven Meeting, the 2-year-olds will be put through their paces on the turf at the Rowley Mile from 9 a.m. on Monday, Apr. 17. The sale takes place after racing on Tuesday and Wednesday at Park Paddocks.

A selection of wildcard entries have been added to the Tattersalls Online December Sale, which opens for bidding at 12 noon on Wednesday, Dec. 14 and closes from 12 noon on Thursday, Dec. 15.

The additional entries are highlighted by a trio of Point-to-Point performers from Sunday's meeting at Borris House. Colin Bowe's Milestone Stables present Clody Flyer, an impressive winner of the Five-Year-Old Gelding's Maiden by two and a half lengths. The son of Sholokhov comes from the family of multiple Grade 1 winner Nil Desperandum. Finishing second was debutante Grass's Jet who will be offered by Johnny Kinsella's Fairview Stables. Also entered in the sale is Doonbeg Don who placed second on his debut in the Four-Year-Old Gelding's Maiden for Tom Keating.

Another promising Point-to-Pointer to be added to the catalogue is Paul Gilligan's Lincoln Burrows. The son of Dylan Thomas finished third at Quakerstown behind What's Up Darling, who subsequently sold at the Tattersalls Cheltenham December Sale for £280,000 to Gordon Elliott Racing.

The supplementary entries are in addition to a strong catalogue which includes a breeding right to phenomenal young sire Havana Grey, a half-sister to Classic winner Cachet, and an own sister to Group 1 Caulfield Cup winner Durston.

Details of all available lots can be found at tattersallsonline.com and further enquiries can be made to Tattersalls or directly to consignors, whose contact details are available on the Tattersalls Online website should prospective buyers wish to arrange inspections of any lots prior to the sale. All enquiries regarding the breeding rights should be directed to tattersallsonline@tattersalls.com.

Half-siblings to this season's Classic heroes Desert Crown (GB) and Cachet (Ire) head a list of elite yearlings heading to Book 1 of the the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale.

With 549 lots catalogued across the three days, relations to recent Group 1 winners Perfect Power (Ire), Alcohol Free (Ire) and Inspiral (GB) also feature, along with siblings to 2015 Horse of the Year Golden Horn (GB), Classic-winning brothers Magna Grecia (Ire) and St Mark's Basilica (Fr), Arc winner Waldgeist (GB), and sprint sensation Battaash (Ire).

The half-brother to Derby winner Desert Crown is from the first crop of Lanwades sire Study Of Man (Ire) and will be offered by his breeder Gary Robinson of Strawberry Fields Stud. Similarly, breeder John Bourke of Hyde Park Stud consigns a Cotai Glory (GB) half-sister to 1,000 Guineas winner Cachet.

“Even by its customary lofty standards the catalogue for Book 1 of the 2022 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale looks to be exceptional,” said Tattersalls chairman Edmond Mahony.

“This year's October Book 1 features own or half-brothers and sisters to more than 60 Classic and Group 1 winners and more than a third of the 549 yearlings catalogued are by current European top 10 sires.”

Those sires include current champion Frankel (GB), who is represented by 28 Book 1 yearlings, including a full-brother to Group 1 winner Without Parole (GB), who is offered by last year's leading vendor Newsells Park Stud.

Dubawi (Ire) has only two fewer yearlings catalogued and among that sizeable group is the second foal of the Group 1 winner Urban Fox (GB) (Foxwedge {Aus}). The colt was bred by the Kieswetter family's Barnane Stud and will be sold on their behalf by Baroda Stud.

Seventeen yearlings by the late Galileo (Ire) also feature, including a full-brother to the Group 1-winning trio of Hermosa (Ire), Hydrangea (Ire), and The United States (Ire), who will be offered by Luke Barry's Manister House Stud.

Mahony continued, “The consistent quality of October Book 1 is reflected in yet another outstanding year for Book 1 graduates on racecourses throughout the world headed in Europe by Classic winners Magical Lagoon and Native Trail and further afield, by American Grade 1 winners In Italian and McKulick.

“Every October Book 1 yearling will again be eligible for the hugely popular £20,000 October Book 1 Bonus Scheme, which has already rewarded 286 winners with almost £7,000,000 in bonus prize-money and ensures that buyers at Europe's premier yearling sale continue to be rewarded with unprecedented prize money.”

Beginning two weeks of yearling trade at Tattersalls in Newmarket, Book 1 will commence on Oct. 4. The catalogue is now available online.

There has been no shortage of talking points at Royal Ascot this week but, perhaps the most controversial incident of them all came in the opening race on Thursday, when Paul Hanagan received a 10-day careless riding ban for veering halfway across the track en route to victory in the G2 Norfolk S. aboard The Ridler (GB) (Brazen Beau {Aus}).

From that controversy to another forgettable afternoon's work for Frankie Dettori, out of luck aboard Stradivarius (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) in the G1 Gold Cup and The Queen's 2-5 favourite Reach For The Moon (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) in the G3 Hampton Court S., Brian Sheerin dissects the main talking points from Thursday's action.

Listen To Heffernan – Racing Needs To Wake Up

What needs to happen in Britain and Ireland for the stewards to start protecting riders? Let's not pretend that this is a problem confined to British racing because it is not.

Just last autumn, Shane Foley found himself on the receiving end of a five-day ban for careless riding when partnering No Speak Alexander (Ire) (Shalaa {Ire}) to victory in the G1 Matron S. at Leopardstown on Irish Champions Weekend.

Race-favourite Mother Earth (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) was one of the worst affected by Foley edging to his left aboard the winner and there was genuine dismay from the international audience looking in on our product that the result wasn't changed.

Lessons haven't been learned and there was an element of groundhog day at Ascot when Paul Hanagan veered halfway across the track aboard The Ridler, inconvenienced a number of big-race rivals, but was allowed to keep the G2 Norfolk S.

What you permit, you promote, and the rules, as they are interpreted, meant that The Ridler was never in any real danger of being chucked out.

Seamie Heffernan gave a candid interview to TDN Europe in the immediate aftermath of the farcical contest where he raised the point that riders should have to forfeit their winner's cheque if found guilty of dangerous or careless riding.

In Hanagan's case, he was handed a 10-day riding ban for careless riding, and one can only assume he took that punishment with a smile.

Put simply, there is no deterrent for riding dangerously and, as Heffernan described, a “win-at-all-cost mentality” has crept into racing in recent times.

It begs the question; what needs to happen for the interference rules to be brought into line to reflect what happens in America, Australia and France?

Kia Joorabchian, whose Amo Racing silks were carried by the second and the third–Walbank (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) and Crispy Cat (GB) (Ardad {Ire})–was rightly fuming after the race. So, too, was Crispy Cat's trainer Michael O'Callaghan, not to mention the international bettors who got involved on the World Pool.

The damage caused by these farcical decisions pose a serious risk to the sport and Thursday's race should be the wake up call racing needs.

The problem is, this is an alarm bell that has been ringing for a while.

Forgettable Day For Frankie

Yesterday we spoke of how Irad Ortiz's week went from bad to worse and, unfortunately for Frankie Dettori, one of the all-time greats of the weighing room, he had a similarly forgettable day at the office.

John Gosden is not a man who goes around ruffling feathers for no reason but he was clearly disappointed with the ride Dettori gave Stradivarius in the Gold Cup, feeling the legendary rider was too far out of his ground in a slowly-run contest.

“I was a bit surprised that being in the box seat we dropped back so far,” Gosden told ITV Racing. He added, “It would have been nice to be a touch handier, to say the least.”

Dettori was once again out of luck in the Britannia S. when, in another stride or two, he almost certainly would have clinched victory aboard The Queen's Saga (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}).

At least there was a 2-5 favourite to steer home, eh? Wrong. Reach For The Moon ensured this was a day that would be remembered for all the wrong reasons when, despite being sent off at prohibitively short odds, Gosden's charge fluffed his lines in the G3 Hampton Court S.

It should also be noted that Reach For The Moon represented the third odds-on favourite of the week at Royal Ascot after Baaeed (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) got the meeting underway as a 1-6 jolly in the G1 Queen Anne S and Bay Bridge(GB) (New Bay {GB}) got turned over at odds of 10-11 in the Prince Of Wales's S. on Wednesday.

Alfred Munnings (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), who runs in the L Chesham S., and short-priced G2 Hardwicke S. fancy Hurricane Lane (Ire) (Frankel {GB}), are set to start at odds-on for their respective races on Saturday.

That will bring the total number of odds-on shots at this year's Royal meeting to five. There was consternation over the fact that there were five odds-on shots at Cheltenham back in March. Where is the outcry this week?

Stradivarius Going Nowhere

There seems to be an unhealthy obsession, certainly in some quarters of the media, in feeling the need to bring up the prospects of retirement as soon as any top horse appears to be on the wane.

Stradivarius is clearly not the force of old, yet he ran a gallant race to finish third in the G1 Gold Cup behind Kyprios (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), and many felt he was unlucky not to have won.

The most pleasing aspect of the performance, however, was that the old boy seemed to retain all of his enthusiasm for the game, which was evidenced by the live pictures of him strutting out of the parade ring afterwards like the champion that he is.

So why this constant talk of retirement? Stradivarius is a racehorse and, to these eyes at least, he still loves to run.

Judging by his fine effort in defeat, he will go close to winning the G1 Goodwood Cup and there is also the option of travelling to Paris later in the season.

Stradivarius has been masterfully handled by John and Thady Gosden. They will know when the time is right to bring the curtain down on his career. Judging by Thursday's performance, that time doesn't appear to be any time soon.

Brilliant Boughey Continues To Build

It is hard to believe that George Boughey has only recently turned 30. Since sending out his first winner in 2019, Boughey has bagged a breakthrough Classic success this year and sugar-coated what has been a memorable season by adding a Royal Ascot victory to his CV when Inver Park (GB) (Pivotal {GB}) landed the Buckingham Palace S.

Boughey got his training career up and running, by and large, with early 2-year-olds, but the standard of his Newmarket operation has risen dramatically with each season, as we saw when Cachet (Ire) (Aclaim {Ire}) won the G1 1000 Guineas.

Things could get even better for Boughey on Friday when Cachet lines out in the G1 Coronation S., which is shaping up to be one of the races of the week. His stock is not just on the rise, it's sky-rocketing.

Also, it would be remiss not to mention the exploits of Jane Chapple-Hyam this week.
