The $375,000 Keeneland September grad posted a number of sharp works for trainer Brittany Russell over the past two months at her Palm Meadows base. Debuting as the 2-1 favorite here, the gray rocketed to the lead up the backstretch. Setting a strong pace up front with a quarter-mile of :21.43, the 3-year-old continued to hold sway around the far turn and she opened up down the lane to win by 5 1/2 lengths over Tinki Abarrio (Runhappy).

The winner is a half-sister to Accretive (Practical Joke), MGSP, $323,393. Mallory Street was purchased during the 2020 Keeneland November Sale by Hidden Brook for $100,000 with Amor Fati in-utero. She was her final offspring before passing away in 2022.

This is the 6th 'Rising Star' for Liam's Map.

Jockey Jevian Toledo and trainer Brittany Russell defended their titles as leading jockey and trainer respectively as the Preakness Meet at Pimlico Race Course drew to a close Sunday.

Toledo, who ranked second in earnings behind only GI Preakness S. winner John Velazquez, finished with a comfortable 10-win margin over co-runners-up Sheldon Russell, Horacio Karamanos and Victor Carrasco. Both Toledo and Russell are represented by agent Marty Leonard.

“It feels great. I'm just blessed that God gave me the good health to be here,” Toledo said. “My agent does a great job and big thanks to all the trainers and owners that give the opportunity to ride their horses. I really appreciate all the help that I've been given this meet.”

Russell ended with 15 wins from 42 starters and $592,630 in purse earnings, second only to GI Preakness S.-winning trainer Bob Baffert.

It is the fourth training title for Russell, who led Laurel's 2022 spring and fall stands and tied for first at last year's Preakness Meet.

“It's great. You do it once, and you hope you can do it again,” Russell said. “It's awesome but my team is amazing. We have more horses now. You win and it just seems like we get more on our plate every time. Whenever it seems like we do something better it becomes more work and more horses, things like that. My team, it's just so fun to watch what they've done. Everybody on my team is just amazing.”

Doppelganger (Into Mischief), last seen recording a 17-1 upset over Repo Rocks (Tapiture) in the GI Carter H. at Aqueduct Apr. 8, remains on target for a rematch with that foe in the GI Hill 'n' Dale Metropolitan H. at Belmont Park June 10.

The $570,000 Fasig-Tipton Selected Yearlings Showcase purchase has registered his three most recent works over the Laurel main track, including a best-of-12 five furlongs that was timed in 1:01.60 May 24.

“Since the Carter, he's quite sharp,” trainer Brittany Russell said. “He thinks he's a bear. Each race, each win, he seems to get higher on himself.”

Though Russell says that connections contemplated a start in the GIII Pimlico Special S. going a mile and three-sixteenths, the decision has been made to continue to race the colt over shorter trips.

“We were thinking Special, but if we want[ed] Special we were going to kill the idea of the Met Mile. If he's a Grade I horse and he's going to be a better miler, that's the way we've got to go,” she said. “We need to pick a path and stay with it and we feel like one turn right now is probably the best way to go. Yes, it's going to be tough up there but as good as he's doing, we're going to take a big swing.”

Veteran trainer Kieron Magee and five-pound apprentice jockey Axel Concepcion claimed their respective meet titles as Laurel Park closed its spring meet Sunday.

Magee, 62, entered the eight-race, closing-day program without a starter, but an 11-8 lead over Jamie Ness in the trainer standings. Hugh McMahon won twice Sunday to pass Ness for second, while Brittany Russell wound up fourth with seven wins.

“It feels great because I'm down to 25 horses. To pull off a training title with 25 horses, that takes some doing,” Magee said. “I lost a bunch of them, but they won on the way out. Everybody that got claimed, won. I was thrilled to win it with such few starts. To have a high percentage is fantastic.”

A native of Ireland who worked as an exercise rider for recently retired trainer Dale Capuano after coming to the U.S., Magee led all Maryland trainers in wins from 2014-2016 and now owns or shares a total of 10 meet titles at Laurel and Pimlico Race Course. It was his first meet title since Pimlico's 2018 spring stand.

Concepcion, who turned 18 Mar. 16, entered Sunday with 12 wins, one behind co-leaders Jevian Toledo and Jeiron Barbosa. Concepcion won the opener on I Have Courage to make it a three-way tie before riding Fancee Grace C to victory in the fifth race to earn his first riding title.

A native of Puerto Rico, where he won 21 races after attending the Escuela Vocacional Hipica jockey school and turning pro Jan. 1, Concepcion registered wins on nine of 16 racing days with doubles Apr. 1, 13, 14 and 29 prior to Sunday.

Represented by agent Tom Stift, Concepcion made his Maryland debut Feb. 24 and picked up his first winner, Shinelikeadiamond, the next day at Laurel in his fifth U.S. mount.

“I'm very confident for my work and the job Tom does for me. I don't have pressure. The wins are coming and thank God for two wins today,” Concepcion said. “I ride all my horses with confidence. Thanks to all the owners and trainers that help me. In the morning I work very hard for this, my first meet that I win. I'm very grateful. Thanks to everyone for giving me the opportunity. I'm ready for Pimlico.”

Blinkered and speeding to the lead after breaking only fairly, the filly put up :22.58 and :46.32 splits from the rail and was seven lengths ahead with three-sixteenths of a mile to race.
