In a first Japanese Group win for her sire, Etes Vous Prets (Ire) (Too Darn Hot (GB)–Nahoodh {Ire} (GISW-Eng, G1SP-Ire, $443,612), by Clodovil {Ire}) stubbornly held on to her advantage in the final metres, and claimed Sunday's G2 Hochi Hai Fillies' Revue, a trial for the G1 Oka Sho on Apr. 7.

Twice the bridesmaid in a pair of maiden contests, she broke through by two lengths in her first start at this venue last September on her third attempt. From there she took another step forward to win the unlisted Fukushima Nisai S. by a nose over Kris Arthur (Jpn) (Big Arthur {Jpn}), and ran fourth Dec. 16 behind that familiar face in her seasonal close in the unlisted Sports Hochi Hai Chukyo Nisai S. at Chukyo.

Off in line with the field, but briefly outrun as the speed to her outside found a touch more foot early, the grey forged to the front not long after as G2 Keio Hai Nisai victrix and G1 Hanshin Juvenile Fillies-placed Corazon Beat (Jpn) (Suave Richard {Jpn}) tucked in behind her.

Strong from that lead position, she'd given herself a narrow advantage entering the turn and coming through it as the field organised itself for the closing stages. Saving ground from the fence en route into the stretch, Yusuke Fujioka cut his charge loose and she responded eagerly, the top two kicking away from the rest. Corazon Beat tried valiantly but ultimately could not catch Etes Vous Prets, three-quarters of a length separating them on the line. Cecilie Plage (Jpn) (Bricks and Mortar) was produced in the final metres to claim third by a neck.

Pedigree Notes
Too Darn Hot (GB), a son of the venerable Dubawi (Ire), claimed his fifth Group winner from his first crop, and his first in Japan, with Etes Vous Pret's performance in this Japanese 1,000 Guineas trial. The filly's dam Nahoodh, an accomplished racemare in her own right with a win at the highest level in Great Britain when she claimed the G1 U.A.E. Hydra Properties Falmouth S., can also brag of a Group 1-placing in Ireland, runner-up at Leopardstown in the G1 Coolmore Fusaichi Pegasus Matron S.

As a broodmare, she's had some success as the dam of UAE stakes victor Hawkesbury (GB) (Shamardal) as well as three other winners, but Etes Vous Prets has firmly established herself as the most successful of those offspring thus far. Her placed half-sister Naturelle (GB) (Night of Thunder {Ire}) changed hands last month for 22,000gns at TATFEB to Broadhurst Agency. Nahoodh has a 2-year-old filly named Spicy Margarita (Ire) (Earthlight {Ire}) in the wings and a yearling Mehmas (Ire) colt.

A field of 12 Japanese-bred 2-year-old colts descends on Kawasaki Racecourse Wednesday evening for the $490,090 Listed Zen-Nippon Nisai Yushun, a 1600-meter contest that serves as the second of four legs on the Japan Road to the Kentucky Derby. A total of 42 Derby points are on the line, to be awarded to the first five finishers on a scale of 20-10-6-4-2.

Aigle Noir (Jpn), a son of Eclipse Award winner Bricks and Mortar, looks for his fourth win from five starts overall and will try to remain undefeated on the dirt in the process. Fourth on turf debut at Hanshin in June, the dark bay graduated over 1700 meters at Kokura Sept. 2 and narrowly prevailed in a Tokyo allowance Oct. 14, defeating Amante Bianco (Jpn) (Henny Hughes). Aigle Noir stepped up to stakes company last time, besting the re-opposing Satono Phoenix (Jpn) (Henny Hughes) in the Listed Hyogo Junior Grand Prix Nov. 22 (see below, SC 7), while Amante Bianco further flattered the form with a handy success in the Cattleya S., the first of the Japanese Kentucky Derby points races at Tokyo three days later.

Forever Young (Jpn) (Real Steel {Jpn}) was purchased for ¥98 million ($720,603) as a yearling at the JRHA Select Sale and is flawless in his two starts to date. A son of GII Santa Ynez S. victress Forever Darling (Congrats) and from the family of Japanese Horse of the Year Zenno Rob Roy (Jpn) (Kris S.) , the Yoshito Yahagi trainee opened his account with a stylish four-length victory in an 1800-meter newcomers event at Kyoto Oct. 14 and was the facile winner of the Listed JBC Nisai Yushun at Mombetsu when last seen Nov. 4 (see below, SC 3). Ryusei Sakai rides the narrow second ante-post favorite.

Godolphin homebred Nasty Weather (Jpn) (Pyro) is also two from three on the dirt, while Seltsam (Jpn) (Henny Hughes)–a distant third to Aigle Noir and Satono Phoenix last time–is the lone group winner in the field, having upset the G3 Hakodate Nisai S. on the turf back in July.

None of the participants from the Cattleya S. presses on to this test, meaning that the winner takes over at the top of the standings. The series continues with the Listed Hyacinth S. at Tokyo Feb. 18 and the Fukuryu S. (allowance) at Nakayama Mar. 23.

The 2022 renewal was won by subsequent G2 UAE Derby hero and recent GI Breeders' Cup Classic runner-up Derma Sotogake (Jpn) (Mind Your Biscuits).

American Horse of the Year Bricks And Mortar (Giant's Causeway) sired his first stakes winner when his first-crop son Gonbade Qabus (Jpn) ran out a two-length winner of the G3 Saudi Arabia Royal Cup at Tokyo on Saturday.

A winner over this course and distance on his debut in June, the 8-1 chance jumped well and floated back through the field to race at the tail down the backstretch as Reve Genial (Jpn) (Maurice {Jpn}) cut out fractions of :23.30 for the first 400 metres and :46.90 for the half-mile. Produced for his run around the 500-metre mark, the blaze-faced dark bay fanned out into the middle of the course by the quarter-pole, drove past his rivals 200 metres later and won going away in this 1600-metre affair. It was tight for second, with the short-priced favourite Bond Girl (Jpn) (Daiwa Major {Jpn}) a neck in front of Strauss (Jpn) (Maurice {Jpn}). Reve Genial hung on four fourth, another three-quarters-of-a-length behind.

Pedigree Notes

The winning Deep Impact mare Affilato (Jpn) took until her 6-year-old year to earn black type, and she accomplished that with a third in the G3 Nakayama Himba S. At stud, Gonbade Qabus is the second winner of two foals out of Affilato, who also has a yearling colt by Epiphaneia (Jpn).

His second dam Lady Of Venice (Fr) (Loup Solitaire) won a trio of graded races in the U.S., and, in addition to Affilato, produced the G3 Keisei Hai second Action Star (Jpn) (Agnes Tachyon {Jpn}). Father back in the pedigree is Classic winner and sire Soviet Star (Nureyev)and GI Santa Barbara H. heroine The Very One (One For All).

A stroll down the 500 block of East Maxwell Street in Lexington, Kentucky brings you to the awninged door of Black Swan Books. If your pursuits are less catholic, then Mike Courtney's seemingly endless maze of heaving shelves can accommodate even the most scrupulous bibliophile of rare Kentuckiana and equine sport culture.

Say, you're looking for a past volume on the two-time Horse of the Year Secretariat, then copious choices await. More recent works like William Nack's Secretariat: The Making of a Champion (2002) and Lawrence Scanlan's The Horse That God Built (2007) are ubiquitous.

But across the canon, you might find that there is something sorely lacking when it comes to 'Big Red' hagiography. No author has quite delved deep enough into the offspring of this champion who has continued to top Thoroughbred history by an unsurmountable 31 lengths.

That is, until now.

As the 50th anniversary of Secretariat's historic Triple Crown run is almost here, author Patricia McQueen has done all of us a massive service by rolling out her magisterial study, Secretariat's Legacy: The Sons, Daughters and Descendants Who Keep His Legend Alive, published this Mar. by SL Publications.

Despite its girth, this is decidedly not a traditional coffee table-style book with pretty pictures. Rather, this is a seriously sourced monograph, replete with revisionist perspective. Namely, that some of the bloodline critics got it wrong in memoriam, Secretariat's progeny were not agonistes. Instead, when we step back, they have on the whole made a sizable contribution to the future of this sport. Some did not 'stamp his get,' as the equine phrase goes, but there were those that certainly begat his running ability and passed it on. With an expert photographic portfolio as proof, McQueen effectively argues that the much-debated sire's influence deserves another look.

It all began for the author while she was in college. Curiosity in the Triple Crown winner took her on a pilgrimage to Kentucky in 1982 to see the fellow himself. The sire's subsequent death in 1989 propelled her down a path to locate and snap pictures of Secretariat's remaining band that would carry forth his legacy. One picture led to one story, and then the dominoes fell, as she documented as many offspring as she could.

McQueen's highly-readable style takes us along Secretariat's pedigreed shedrow where we meet Dactylographer–the sire's first stakes winner, sales toppers like Miss Secretariat and Grey Legion make an appearance, as does popular Old Friends social media darling Tinners Way. A bevy of international success stories inform us about the sire's reach that stretched from France to Japan.

We also hear some wonderful anecdotes, like the one the author tells about the unusual in-utero journey of Fanfreluche, one of Secretariat's most productive mares. Thieves absconded with her in June 1977 from Claiborne Farm, and after five months, an FBI sweep of the Bluegrass uncovered her location when she was discovered on an innocent farm after she was found wandering along a country road.

More evidence piles up, curated and culled expertly by McQueen. The chapter entitled 'The Lukas Touch' is especially rich with stories of how 'The Coach' believed Secretariat should be crossed with fast, precocious mares. Crimson Saint produced a number of these types, including Lukas runners like Terlingua, Pancho Villa, Navajo Pass and one of the last three of his progeny still alive, Border Run. From Lady's Secret and Risen Star to the influence of Storm Cat, Gone West and A.P. Indy and all the way to Bricks and Mortar, Authentic and Knicks Go, 'Big Red' is still with us.

With a foreword by Kate Tweedy and Leanne Ladin, plus an excellent appendix listing all 62 stakes winners, Secretariat's Legacy has closed the canonical 31-length gap in the scholarship. Patricia McQueen ensures that this 'Super Horse's' offspring are agonistes no longer.

Clearly, it's time to reserve a spot on the shelf at Black Swan Books.

Secretariat's Legacy: The Sons, Daughters and Decedents Who Keep His Legend Alive by SL Publications, 298 pages, photos, appendix, glossary, March 2023.

Following more Classic success, this time with his son Efforia (Jpn) in 2021, Epiphaneia (Jpn) (Symboli Kris S)'s fee has increased to ¥18,000,000 (£117,174/€139,172/$156,021), tops of the Shadai Stallion Station 2022 roster. The 11-year-old also celebrated group winners Aristoteles (Jpn) and Circle of Life (Jpn). Lord Kanaloa (Jpn) (King Kamehameha {Jpn}), the sire of Japanese Horse of the Year Almond Eye (Jpn), remains at ¥15,000,000. Kizuna (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn})'s fee has been raised to ¥12,000,000 on the back of 11 2021 black-type winners including G1 Queen Elizabeth II Cup heroine Akai Ito (Jpn). Another Shadai stallion to see his fee increase is Drefong (Gio Ponti), who will stand for ¥7,000,000, after his Geoglyph (Jpn) won the G3 Sapporo Nisai S. and he had another pair of runners gain black-type placings.

A trio of exciting newcomers will cover their first mares at Shadai in 2022–2020 Japanese Triple Crown winner Contrail (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}), G1 2000 Guineas hero Poetic Flare (Ire) (Dawn Approach {Ire}), and 2019 Japanese Champion Dirt Horse and G1 Champions Cup winner Chrysoberyl (Jpn) (Gold Allure {Jpn}). Fees for Poetic Flare and Chrysoberyl have been set at ¥6,000,000 and ¥3,000,000, respectively. Contrail's fee will be announced after his run in Sunday's G1 Japan Cup.

Responsible for the G1 Victoria Derby victor Hitotsu (Aus), Maurice (Jpn) (Screen Hero {Jpn})'s fee has been reduced to ¥7,000,000. That is the same price that Japanese Classic winners Rey de Oro (Jpn) (King Kamehameha {Jpn}) and Saturnalia (Jpn) (Lord Kanaloa {Jpn}) will command, with the former having first yearlings in 2022 and the latter welcomes his first foals next year. 2019 U.S. Horse of the Year Bricks and Mortar (Giant's Causeway), whose first foals are yearlings in 2022, will hold court for ¥6,000,000. The last son of Sunday Silence on the Shadai roster, Daiwa Major (Jpn), will stand for a private fee.

Arthur B. Hancock III has been selected by the Board of Directors of the Thoroughbred Club of America as the 2020 Honor Guest, Club President Katherine LaMonica announced Tuesday. Mr. Hancock will be honored by the Club at its 89th Testimonial Dinner.

“The Thoroughbred Club of America is excited to name Arthur B. Hancock III as our 2020 Honor Guest”, said LaMonica. “Arthur represents the Thoroughbred industry in its most sincere form, hailing from a family rooted strongly in tradition, while forging his own unique legacy of horsemanship and leadership in our sport.”

Arthur B. Hancock III is the owner of Stone Farm in Paris, Kentucky. He has made his mark breeding, racing, and selling Thoroughbreds, as well as putting his personal stamp on the development of Stone Farm and its ongoing success. A fourth-generation horseman, Hancock grew up on historic Claiborne Farm. As a young man, he worked a year at the racetrack for Hall of Fame Trainer Eddie Neloy and returned to Claiborne to work as the assistant broodmare and yearling manager under the tutelage of his father. In 1970, Hancock leased 100 acres and launched Stone Farm. Today, the farm comprises 2,200 acres and has been in operation for fifty years.

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>
As a market breeder, Hancock bred, raised and sold Belmont Stakes and Preakness winner Risen Star and Kentucky Derby winner Fusaichi Pegasus. For farm clients, Hancock raised and sold two Horse of the Year honorees, Sunday Silence (1989) and Bricks and Mortar (2019). As an owner, Hancock campaigned Sunday Silence, Gato Del Sol, Goodbye Halo, Menifee, Strodes Creek, Harlan and a cast of others to win the Kentucky Derby twice, the Kentucky Oaks, the Preakness Stakes, the Breeders' Cup Classic and other notable Grade 1 races. In Europe, Stone Farm-raised standouts have included Classic colt Hawaiian Sound, Champion Filly Rainbow View, and Champion Juvenile Colt Air Force Blue. Stone Farm has produced nearly 180 stakes winners, including the winners of more than 75 graded stakes. In addition, Stone Farm was home to two-time Leading Sire Halo, who was the sire of Champion Sunday Silence, himself a pivotal international stallion.

In his capacity as an industry leader, Hancock has served on the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission, as a director of Keeneland Association and Fasig-Tipton Company, and as a member of The Jockey Club. Especially visible has been Hancock's leadership in fostering integrity in racing. He is a cofounder and outspoken supporter of the Water Hay Oats Alliance (WHOA), a growing force dedicated to eliminating performance-enhancing drugs in racing.
