'TDN Rising Star' UNQUESTIONABLE (FR) (c, 2, Wootton Bassett {GB}–Strawberry Lace {GB}, by Sea The Stars {Ire}) was given a tactically flawless steer by world-class reinsman Ryan Moore and proved far too classy in Friday's GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf at Santa Anita, defeating his stable companion Mountain Bear (Ire) (No Nay Never) by about three lengths. Able to secure the gun run one back on the fence in fourth, the €340,000 Arqana August yearling always traveled sweetly in the hands of Moore as Air Recruit (Air Force Blue) took them along at a lively clip in advance of the heavily backed Canadian invader My Boy Prince (Cairo Prince). Going well into the final three furlongs, Unquestionable was ridden for a bit of luck, hoping that the runs came, and come they did, as the bay–a latest second to Rosallion (Ire) (Blue Point {Ire}) in the G1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere at ParisLongchamp–was produced three off the inside at midstretch and scampered clear. Mountain Bear finished full of run down the center to claim second, while My Boy Prince held for third. For Moore, it was a sixth victory in the Juvenile Turf, having partnered with Victoria Road (Ire) (Saxon Warrior {Jpn}) last year, and 13th Breeders' Cup win overall, while Aidan O'Brien was winning a 17th race at the championships. The victory would have been of some consolation for Ballydoyle, whose morning-line favorite River Tiber (Ire) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) was ordered scratched Friday.

If ever there was a horse whose CV matches his pedigree, it is Mendelssohn. He topped the Keeneland September sale on a bid of $3 million from Coolmore in 2016, the year before he captured the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf. And that pedigree? When he won the Breeders' Cup, he pushed his dam, the reigning Broodmare of the Year Leslie's Lady, into rare territory: she became what was then one of five mares to produce two Breeders' Cup winners. The year prior, her multiple champion daughter Beholder had captured her third Breeders' Cup. If that isn't enough of a 'wow' factor, Mendelssohn has another pretty well-known half-sibling as well, four-time leading sire Into Mischief.

“All of our team loved Mendelssohn from the first time we saw him as a yearling and he developed into a magnificent-looking horse,” said Coolmore's Charlie O'Connor. “Being by our own Scat Daddy and a half-brother to Into Mischief and Beholder, you couldn't ask for a better pedigree and he showed real brilliance when winning the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf at Del Mar and the [G2] U.A.E. Derby by a street, recording a new track record. He is currently the No. 4 leading sire of 2-year-olds in North America… With big crops to come he should keep rising up the ranks.”

Mendelssohn (2015 bay horse, Scat Daddy–Leslie's Lady, by Tricky Creek)

Lifetime record: Hwt. at 3-U.A.E, GISW-U.S., GSW-U.A.E., G1SP-Eng, SW-Ire, 13-4-2-2, $2,542,137

Breeders' Cup connections: B-Clarkland Farm (KY); O-Michael B. Tabor, Mrs. John Magnier, and Derrick Smith; T-Aidan O'Brien; J-Ryan Moore.

Celebrating 40 Years of the Breeders' Cup with Living Legends

It wasn't so long ago that the magnificent sire Gone West held court at Mill Ridge Farm near Lexington. From 22 crops, all while at Mill Ridge, he netted a mouth-watering 9% black-type winners from starters, including Breeders' Cup winners Da Hoss (twice), Johar, and Speightstown, all back in the days when the Breeders' Cup was still a single day and there were far fewer races.

The son of Mr. Prospector passed away in 2009, but his influence on the Breeders' Cup was not done and neither was Mill Ridge's. Among Gone West's sire sons are Speightstown, who has sired two Breeders' Cup winners, and Elusive Quality, who has sired three. His grandsons include Quality Road, sire of four Breeders' Cup winners. And among the major runners out of his daughters is another Breeders' Cup winner in Awesome Feather.

The Mill Ridge team hasn't stopped there. Eight Breeders' Cup winners have been bred, raised, and/or sold by the Central Kentucky farm. Additionally, Mill Ridge's involvement in Horse Country has created an extra ripple effect of the Breeders' Cup's impact on farms big and small, as well as on the fans who visit those farms. And now, the two young sires who are standing at Mill Ridge are both Breeders' Cup winners.

“That's like starting two full teams for the University of Kentucky basketball team,” said Price Bell, Jr., general manager of Mill Ridge, with a laugh about the eight Breeders' Cup winners combined with the two additional championship day winners in the stud barn. “That's the beauty of the Breeders' Cup. How lucky are we to have been able to associate with this many horses on Breeders' Cup days?

“We'll often have visitors say, 'Well, don't you have an unfair advantage because you get to watch them in the field and then watch them win?' We know how special it is to get to do this.”

From the start, Oscar Performance had the Bell family's fingerprints all over him. Fittingly, he was raised on the farm and has now returned to the place of his birth to stand. He is also the sire of Sunday's GIII Zuma Beach S. winner Endlessly from his second crop of 2-year-olds. Endlessly is an unbeaten dual graded winner–for the same connections as his sire–who will try to emulate his sire in the Nov. 3 GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf.

“We raised Oscar Performance for the Amermans and helped with the mating. Now for a horse for the same connections to go on and keep that dream alive is very special.

“We feel so lucky and blessed to associate with so many incredible people and breeders and clients and horses,” said Bell. “The Breeders' Cup is what we're all striving for and dreaming about as soon as you do a mating. We feel so blessed to have gotten there and want to keep going.”

Mill Ridge is a popular spot on the Horse Country tours and Oscar Performance has become a showman.

“To connect him with guests is so special,” said Bell. “People have just fallen in love with him. We've really enjoyed sharing him with people and seeing the way he's become a fan favorite. It has been very meaningful as we share that he was the best 2-year-old on the turf in his generation, the best 3-year-old on the turf, and that he set the world record at a mile. One of those three things often sticks with people. To be able to share him with fans is really special.”

As a racehorse, Oscar Performance had a devastating kick.

“What I found so brilliant in his Breeders' Cup is that he had broken from the 13 hole, yet was able to clear the field,” said Bell. “To break from the 13th post to get clear and over at Santa Anita is a big thing. I remember very vividly where I was when he broke his maiden [at Saratoga in August of 2016]. And then his Breeders' Cup, we sat and watched it at the office with my dad because my wife and I had a 15-month-old. It was our son's first Grade I and one we certainly remember as a family. It would be so memorable if Endlessly could do it, too. We're so blessed to have those relationships.”

Aloha West, whose first foals will be born in 2024, took a different route to Mill Ridge.

“He was raised by our friends at Nursery Place by John Mayer,” said Bell. “I think for his Breeders' Cup, what was so telling, is that was the ninth race he had had that year. He'd showed some ability at two, had some shins, hurt himself at three. They were really patient with him. [He debuted at four], broke his maiden in February culminating with a Breeders' Cup win. He danced every dance, had nine starts that year, no real break. He was sort of the clever horse on the backside; people had a lot of chatter about him going into the Breeders' Cup. And then he showed that will to win.”

In addition to their two Breeders' Cup-winning stallions, one of whom they had also raised, Mill Ridge has been intimately involved with 2000 Distaff winner Spain, 2003 Turf dead-heater Johar (one of Gone West's winners), 2004 Juvenile Fillies winner Sweet Catomine, 2005 Mile winner Artie Schiller, 2006 Distaff winner Round Pond, 2009 Ladies' Classic winner Life Is Sweet, and 2013 Juvenile Fillies winner Ria Antonia. For those keeping score, that was four consecutive winners from 2003-06 and six in that decade alone.

Winning the Breeders' Cup doesn't get old though. On the contrary, it leaves one hungry for more.

“Once you've been there, you want to experience it again,” said Bell. “You want to do it again and again and again and again.”

Bell has distinct memories of every winner. Some stood out early.

“I often put Sweet Catomine as the one that everyone on the farm thought was very special. For her to culminate as champion and the way she had done it was wonderful. Sometimes you do see something when they're young and it's very gratifying.”

Some stand out because of the relationships with the breeders.

“Artie Schiller was awesome because Leroidesanimaux (Brz) was the overwhelming favorite and he beat him handily, squarely, no excuses. He ran by him like he was standing still. It was a great culmination of the relationship we had with the Moussacs [breeders of Artie Schiller]. A great celebration.”

But one of the Breeders' Cup wins that is most memorable to Bell is for an out-of-the-ordinary reason and ties in to the farm's involvement with Horse Country.

“I remember Spain was a classic [D. Wayne] Lukas move. Lukas put them to sleep. She got a phenomenal ride [from Victor Espinoza]. It was Lukas taking a shot and then he wins at 56-1.

“But what I really remember when I think of her now is on one of our tours there was a gentleman who was about my age. He loved Spain. He was in the hospital at the time she won, in a children's cancer ward, and he'd told all the nurses to bet her.

“Here's a horse that we both had great memories of for very different reasons. It was our first Breeders' Cup winner while he's a kid fighting cancer. It meant a lot to both of us, was an inspiration for both of us. Horses touch people in different ways and sometimes we don't even know it.”

A Horse Country tour sign at Mill Ridge | Sarah Andrew

Perhaps that is why Bell and Mill Ridge are so bullish on the non-profit Horse Country, which Bell was instrumental in co-founding and which also has Breeders' Cup roots. It's his way of giving back to the industry and connecting the wider public to our sport.

“We launched Horse Country tours the same year [2015] as the first Breeders' Cup at Keeneland. It coincided with American Pharoah and that was kind of what got us going. We had set a timeline of the Breeders' Cup date and it gave us a starting gate. We were committed. It has taken a lot of iterations between then and now, but we're big believers in it. We love doing it and sharing what we do.

“The tours have welcomed 200,000 people since then, 25,000 of those at Mill Ridge. We're the number two thing to do on Trip Advisor in Lexington. It feels like it's our part in trying to connect people to racing.

“We're all inspired by the horses and tours are people's best opportunity to meet a horse. Farms create a great opportunity for that. It's meaningful for people to share that, just like the gentleman who had a relationship with Spain from his hospital bed.”

One guest at a time, Mill Ridge and Horse Country are changing the wider public's perception of racing. If meeting a Breeders' Cup-winning stallion brings one more person over to the beauty of our sport, it's a win. If it shows another person how well we take care of our horses and how much they mean to us, it's a win. And if it gets one more person to watch the Breeders' Cup, feeling they have a connection because they've feed a carrot to the sire of one of the runners or have walked over the same land where one was raised, it's a win.

“The better we can show guests what we do, the better we all are,” said Bell. “It feels like the right thing to do. We get so much from the guests and the experience. It's a great reminder of how lucky we are.

“Mill Ridge is just one small piece in it, but we've jumped all the way in. It's very doable. And it's beautiful. At the end of the day, we get so much out of committing to it.

“I feel like we get more out of it than we give.”

Amerman homebred Endlessly (Oscar Performance) upped his perfect record to three-for-three as he made 4-5 odds look like a gift in Sunday's GIII Zuma Beach S. at Santa Anita. The bay donned cap and gown over a mile at Del Mar July 30, and returned over the same course and distance Sept. 10 to annex the GIII Del Mar Juvenile Turf S. by another daylight margin. Getting a spin around the same trip as the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Nov. 3 this time, Endlessly settled into a midpack spot as his stablemates Ngannou (Mendelssohn) and Formidable Man (City of Light) sat first and second through a half in :46.27. The favorite began to creep closer approaching the quarter pole with Florida invader Grand Mo the First (Uncle Mo) revving up to his outside, made his move up the fence as that foe swung wide and then tipped one off the rail to overtake Ngannou while bumping with the tiring Formidable Man. Once able to fully level out, he asserted his superiority and ran up the score. Ngannou held second from Grand Mo the First.

“I had a really nice trip,” said winning rider Juan Hernandez. “My horse broke sharp today and he always puts himself in a good spot. I was tracking the pace, there were a couple of horses in front of me and I was saving ground the first turn. Around the 3/8 when I was ready to start making my move I was a little surprised because he is the kind of horse when you ask him he picks it up right away, but today it took him a couple of jumps to figure out that he had to start making his move. I wanted to go outside, but then I saw the rail open for me and saw the opportunity to come through and make up more ground, so I decided to come between horses. My horse is really professional–he came through the horses really well and after that he just passed everybody like the last couple of races. He's improving with every race.”

Pedigree Notes:

Endlessly is one of three graded winners and five stakes winners for his young sire. He is one of 80 worldwide stakes winners (20 group or graded) out of Langfuhr mares. Out of French import and SoCal SW/GSP Society Dream, dam Dream Fuhrever is a half to the dam of the Amermans' GISW Coffee Clique (Medaglia d'Oro) and MGSW Admission Office (Point of Entry). Another half-sister is responsible for this year's Hawthorne Derby winner Act a Fool (Oscar Performance). Dream Fuhrever produced a full-brother to Endlessly in March and was bred back to Oscar Performance for the fifth-straight year.

Longshot Can Group rallied from last to first at 27-1 in Sunday's GII Castle & Key Bourbon S. at Keeneland to narrowly stamp his ticket to the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf. Last-out Sapling S. scorer Noted came out on the wrong end of a tight photo, while Pepsi Juvenile Sprint S. winner Vote No rounded out the lucrative trifecta.

Sandwiched at the start and back to last as the full field scrambled for position into the first bend, Can Group was still patiently handled by Francisco Arrieta as they straightened. He was able to sneak through a seam in midstretch, kicked it into high gear from there and zoomed down the center of the course to nip Noted at the line.

Official fractions and a final time were never posted. TimeformUS's Craig Milkowski later tweeted an estimated final time of 1:43.73.

“He was [last going into the final turn],” noted Arrieta, who was celebrating his first Keeneland stakes win. “When I moved and he saw the leaders, he just took off and, wow, it was amazing. I felt like I crossed the wire in front. He was rolling. I won with him at Kentucky Downs and he came from off the pace very nice, slow, so today I planned the same. Relax, give him time and make one move, and he showed up.”

The winner was third in a pair of dirt sprints at Ellis to kick off his career before breaking through in visually impressive fashion going seven panels on the Kentucky Downs sod Sept. 2.

Pedigree Notes:

Can Group builds on a strong month-plus in Kentucky for his young sire (by Harlan's Holiday), who was also represented by the $1-million GIII Big Ass Fans Music City S. winner–his first at the graded level–and $1-million Dueling Grounds Oaks runner-up on the same weekend Can Group earned his diploma. He is one of 32 stakes winners and 13 group/graded winners worldwide out of Street Sense mares.

The winner's unraced dam has now been responsible for a trio of juvenile stakes winners, including 2019 Prairie Gold Lassie and Iowa Sorority S. winner Flat Out Speed, who stretched out effectively to take the GIII Iowa Oaks at three. Starlight Racing purchased Blue Gallina's yearling filly by Authentic for $310,000 at Fasig Saratoga. She failed to produce a foal for 2023, but was bred back to Jack Christopher for 2024.

Repole Stable and St. Elias Stable's AGATE ROAD (c, 2, Quality Road–Yellow Agate, by Gemologist) saved his best for last, as he found his best stride inside the final furlong and edged away to take Wednesday's GII Pilgrim S., earning an all-expenses-paid trip to Santa Anita for the Nov. 3 GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf in the process. Favored at 2-1 off a Saratoga 'TDN Rising Star'-worthy maiden victory that really had to be seen to be believed, the $650,000 Keeneland September yearling purchase was content to sit one from the tail as the outposted Spirit Prince (Cairo Prince)–a latest third in the GIII With Anticipation S. Aug. 31–crossed and cleared all the inside traffic to lead through an opening quarter in :23.51. Quietly ridden down the back by Irad Ortiz, Jr., Agate Road was asked for some acceleration as the field hit the turn, but was consigned to an overland run and lost some ground. Spun wide into the stretch, Agate Road began to zero in on the front-runners with less than a furlong to travel and did his best work through the wire. The final time for the 8 1/2 furlongs was 1:42.83. Fulmineo (Bolt d'Oro) knifed through late for second ahead of the dead-heating Liam's Journey (Liam's Map) and Spirit Prince.

Keepmeinmind (Laoban–Inclination, by Victory Gallop), whose prowess on the track first brought sire Laoban to the national forefront, and GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf winner and Eclipse finalist Fire At Will (Declaration of War–Flirt, by Kitten's Joy) join Honest Mischief, Freud and Mission Impazible at Sequel New York's stallion roster, bringing diverse and interesting options for Thoroughbred breeders in the Empire State.

Bred by Southern Equine Stables, the physically impressive Keepmeinmind broke his maiden in the GII Kentucky Jockey Club S. in November of his 2-year-old season. Prior to that, he was runner-up to future two-time Eclipse Award winner Essential Quality (Tapit) in the GI Claiborne Breeders' Futurity. He finished third in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile behind Essential Quality and Hot Rod Charlie.

“Keepmeinmind had a great 2-year-old campaign,” said Carlos Manresa, director of operations at Sequel New York. “He was really the first of the Laobans to make national notoriety, along with, of course, Simply Ravishing.”

At age three, Keepmeinmind was a respectable sixth in the GI Kentucky Derby and fourth in the GI Preakness S. He finished just a half-length behind Essential Quality in the 2021 GII Jim Dandy S. Keepmeinmind was originally trained by Robertino Diodoro, and at age four he was transferred to Todd Pletcher for whom he won a Saratoga allowance.
Pletcher told the TDN, “Keepmeinmind is a specimen with a terrific disposition. He competed with and beat the best of the best. A big boost for the New York breeding roster.”

“He's a more elegant, refined version of Laoban,” said Manresa of Keepmeinmind. “He's got the big, big hip, but he's also a leggy, stretchy horse that you would expect from the Uncle Mo line.”

Keepmeinmind will stand in 2023 for $6,500.

Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf winner Fire At Will retired with a record of 6-3-0-1 and earnings of $675,932. Bred in Kentucky by Troy Rankin and raced by Three Diamonds Farm, Fire At Will broke his maiden at two in his second start in Saratoga's With Anticipation S. He then took the GII Pilgrim S. on the turf at Belmont. He punctuated the year with a victory in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf at Keeneland. He was an Eclipse Award finalist for the 2-year-old champion male, eventually won by Essential Quality.

“It's definitely an interesting time to bring a horse that has been successful on multiple surfaces to stud in New York,” said Manresa. “New York is in a shift towards all alternative racing surfaces, specifically at Belmont. There's been a lot of discussion over having a synthetic course as well as the dirt and grass surfaces.”

Fire At Will brings an impressive performance on the grass as well as proven turf pedigree to New York. Fire at Will is the first foal from the Kitten's Joy mare Flirt. His sire Declaration of War won the G1 Juddmonte International S. in 2013.

“[Fire At Will] is absolutely the fastest 2-year-old I have ever trained on the turf,” conditioner Mike Maker told the TDN.

“Fire At Will is standing at Sequel New York in partnership with Three Diamonds Farm, which is owned and managed by Kirk and Deborah Wyckoff,” said Manresa. “They're tremendous supporters of the New York-bred program, and it just seemed like the perfect fit for this Breeders' Cup champion to come to stud in New York.”

His fee for the upcoming season will be $6,000.

“We try to make a habit out of selecting the perfect stallions for us,” said Manresa. “And this year, we got lucky and were able to attract two phenomenal stallions that had exceptional racing careers at two years old, both being Breeders' Cup participants, both being placed in the Breeders' Cup, and one of them being a Breeders' Cup champion.”

The Three Diamonds Farm runner broke his maiden at second asking in Saratoga's With Anticipation S. at two while on the main track and quickly made it three in a row, taking the GII Pilgrim S. on Belmont's lawn prior to his victory in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf at Keeneland. He won the latter by three lengths, propelling him to the Eclipse Awards as a finalist for the 2-year-old champion male, eventually won by Essential Quality (Tapit).

“[Fire At Will] is absolutely the fastest 2-year-old I have ever trained on the turf,” said conditioner Mike Maker.

Fire At Will switched to the dirt again for his first start at three, finishing off the board in the GII Fountain of Youth S., then quickly rebounded to a third-place finish in Keeneland's GIII Transylvania S. on the grass. Fire At Will retires with a record of 6-3-0-1 and earnings of $675,932.

Bred in Kentucky by Troy Rankin, Fire At Will was purchased as a yearling at the 2019 Keeneland September sale by Three Diamonds Farm for $97,000. His dam is a half-sister to GISW Decorated Invader (Declaration of War) and they hail from the same family as successful sire Stormy Atlantic. Bidding for Fire At Will's digital sale closed Jan. 11.

“Recent Fasig-Tipton Digital sale graduate Fire At Will presents a great opportunity to breeders in New York,” said Fasig-Tipton President Boyd Browning. “He was a brilliant Breeders' Cup winner at two and has an outstanding pedigree. Becky Thomas and her team at Sequel have added another really exciting stallion prospect for the 2023 breeding season.”

Fire At Will will be available for inspection at Sequel, along with fellow Sequel stallions Keepmeinmind, Honest Mischief, Freud, and Mission Impazible, this coming Saturday, Jan. 21, from 11 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. His fee for the upcoming season will be $6,000.

The early wagering money told the tale that 7-5 choice Silver Knott (GB) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) was the most logical winner of Friday's GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf at Keeneland. However, the hot triumvirate of Coolmore, Aidan O'Brien and Ryan Moore teamed up once again to take their second Breeders' Cup victory of the afternoon with 5-1 chance Victoria Road (Ire) (Saxon Warrior {Jpn}), who entered this event riding a three-race win streak.

Settled in midpack early, Victoria Road opted for the outer course, while Silver Knott's rider, William Buick, chose to navigate the inner. Approaching the quarter pole, the former got the jump on his rival while finding a picture-perfect stretch run, although the Godolphin representative put in an equally impressive run while scraping the paint, finishing only a whisker behind his rival at the wire. Final time for the mile test was 1:35.99. The winner represents the first Grade I winner for freshman sire Saxon Warrior.

Structor, the winner of the 2019 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf, has been sold to begin his stallion career in Japan.

The deal was brokered by Ramiro Restrepo's Marquee Bloodstock, and it was announced via the company's social media channels on Jan. 17.

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

Marquee Bloodstock pinhooked the son of Palace Malice in partnership with Pick View, purchasing him as a yearling for $160,000 and selling him for $850,000 at the 2019 Ocala Breeders' Sales Co. March Sale of 2-Year-Olds In Training.

Structor went unbeaten during his 2-year-old season, winning on debut in a Saratoga turf maiden special weight, then taking the Grade 3 Pilgrim Stakes at Belmont Park. He then shipped to Santa Anita Park for the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf, where he got up late to win by three-quarters of a length. The campaign saw him be named an Eclipse Award finalist for champion 2-year-old male.

After a layoff of more than a year, Structor returned for one more start in February 2021, where he finished fourth in a Gulfstream Park optional claiming race.

Structor retired with three wins in four starts for earnings of $710,880, racing for owners Jeff Drown and Don Rachel, and trained by Chad Brown.

Bred in Kentucky by Three Chimneys, Structor is out of the winning More Than Ready mare Miss Always Ready, who is also the dam of Grade 2-placed Always Carina. Miss Always Ready is a full-sister to 2010 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf winner More Than Real.
