Laura Gibson-Brabazon of Newmarket Racecourses has launched a fundraising campaign to aid her friend Lucy Horan to seek urgent cancer treatment in Germany.

Horan, 28, was diagnosed with Stage 4 Metastatic Breast Cancer earlier this year. The money raised will be used to help her receive groundbreaking vaccine treatment which is unavailable in the UK.

A Newmarket resident since 2017, Horan is employed by bloodstock insurers Weatherbys Hamilton and has also ridden out regularly for trainers in the town, including Lucy Wadham, James Ferguson and more recently Charlie Fellowes.

In 2022, she finished second in the Ride of Their Lives charity race at York, having successfully raised over £5,000 for the Macmillan cancer charity.

“Fast-forward 18 months and now Lucy is the one needing the support,” said Gibson-Brabazon, who set up a Go Fund Me page on Friday.

“On Thursday, Lucy will begin an intense course of chemotherapy, but to get this vaccine treatment, which will give her the greatest chance to beat this disease, she has to travel to Germany on Tuesday prior to her beginning her chemo.

“We all know how incredible this industry can be when people need help and support, so we are asking for you to donate as much as you can to help Lucy get the help she needs to pay for this life changing treatment.”

Edited Press Release

Submissions to participate in the 2024 Kentucky Oaks Survivors Parade on Friday, May 3 are now open.

The launch of the Survivors Parade submissions coincides with the milestone mark of 100 days until the 150th running of the Kentucky Derby presented by Woodford Reserve on Saturday, May 4.

This year's Parade will honor 150 Breast and Ovarian cancer survivors and fighters with tickets for the selected recipient and a guest to attend the 150th Kentucky Oaks on Friday, May 3, and include an unforgettable march on the historic track at Churchill Downs.

Those who have overcome or are battling a breast or ovarian cancer diagnosis who have never participated in the Oaks Survivors Parade are encouraged to submit their story at www.KentuckyDerby.com/Survivors-Parade until Tuesday, Feb. 20. Those who wish to nominate a potential participant for consideration are encouraged to share the submission link directly with the candidate so that they may submit the relevant qualifying information.

For the 16th Survivors Parade, Churchill Downs will support and recognize the meaningful work of two beneficiary organizations that provide critical services and care to underserved women across the region who may lack access to breast care screenings: Derby Divas in partnership with the Norton Cancer Institute Breast Health Program; and Horses and Hope in affiliation with the Kentucky Cancer Program that provides breast cancer screening, education and treatment referral among Kentucky's signature horse industry workers and others who lack access to health services. The Kentucky Oaks charitable initiative has raised more than $1 million to drive breast and ovarian health awareness and life-saving interventions over the past 15 years.

The 2024 Survivors Parade participants will be chosen randomly rather than by public vote to optimize equal opportunity and consideration. Winners will be announced Monday, Feb. 26.

In addition to a call for submissions, fans are encouraged to join the effort to raise money to support breast and ovarian health by donating to the Kentucky Oaks charitable partners at www.kentuckyderby.com/survivors.

In support of the Shantel Lanerie Cancer Breast Foundation, Harrah’s Louisiana Downs will host a fundraiser Saturday, Sept. 19. The wife of jockey Corey Lanerie was diagnosed with Stage 1 breast cancer in January, 2018, and passed away six months later. She is survived by her parents, husband and daughter, Brittlyn.

Beginning at 2:00 pm on Louisiana Cup Day, a table will be set up in the grandstand with monogrammed apparel and memorabilia. Jockeys will be on hand to autograph the items, with all proceeds to benefit the foundation. Fans will be able to stop by the table, purchase items or make donations until 6:00 pm.

A close friend of Shantel, Rick Mocklin, who was Lanerie’s agent for 10 years serves as founder and president of the Shantel Lanerie Breast Cancer Foundation (SLBCF). The 501(c)(3) organization was founded in September, 2018 with a mission of educating, empowering and encouraging women to become pro-active in early detection, and if diagnosed, surviving breast cancer. Acknowledging that breast cancer impacts the entire family, the Foundation designates funds raised through donations and fundraisers to assist with basic needs of breast cancer patients through every stage of diagnosis and treatment.

“Breast cancer can be devastating for so many people,” said Mocklin. “To lose Shantel when she was just 42 years-old was heartbreaking for her family and many friends. The foundation has already helped 40 women diagnosed with breast cancer and we want to keep raising funds to support those in need.”
