Jack Christopher (Munnings), expected to go off the favorite in the GI TVG Breeders' Cup Juvenile but scratched by the track veterinarians the day prior to the race, has had a screw inserted in his left shin due to a stress fracture, according to his ownership group's racing manager, Bradley Weisbord.

The news was first reported by the Blood-Horse.

“Jack Christopher saw Dr. Larry Bramlage the Wednesday following the Breeders' Cup,” said Weisbord. “He had a full examination, including a bone scan. A couple of areas lit up, mainly the left shin, which is the reason he scratched on the Thursday prior to the Juvenile. He had a procedure where one screw was inserted into his shin, which will be removed in three weeks. He will recover at WinStar Farm before heading to South Florida.”

The chestnut, owned by Jim Bakke, Gerald Isbister, Coolmore Stud and Peter Brant and trained by Chad Brown, made it two-for-two with an eye-catching win in Belmont's GI Champagne S. Oct. 2.

“Chad Brown has split strings between Payson Park and Palm Meadows,” said Weisbord. “It is undetermined at this time which string Jack Christopher will join. We will leave that up to Chad, but we look forward to seeing him on the track in early 2022.”

“Due to a couple areas lighting up (on a bone scan), mainly the left shin, he had a procedure done on that shin and he's going to be out for two months,” bloodstock agent Bradley Weisbord told bloodhorse.com. “So we will start him back (training) in early 2022 at WinStar Farm and then ship him to Palm Meadows and start his campaign in South Florida.”

Trained by Chad Brown, Jack Christopher won his debut at Saratoga on Aug. 28 and added the G1 Champagne Stakes to his resume on Oct. 2. The colt out of Half Ours mare Rushin No Blushin was a $135,000 yearling purchase at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Fall sale, and he was the morning-line favorite for the Juvenile prior to his scratch by Breeders' Cup veterinarians.

DEL MAR, CA — Unbeaten 'TDN Rising Star' Jack Christopher (Munnings), the 9-5 morning-line favorite for Friday's GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile at Del Mar, was scratched on the advice of the veterinarians at the Breeders' Cup, according to Bradley Weisbord of BSW Bloodstock, who serves as Jim Bakke's racing manager.

“(Trainer) Chad (Brown) called me at 6:00 last night to say he had gutting news. He said, `They're not going to let him run.' I just said, `What's wrong?' and he said, `they said he's got a left shin.' For us, it's shocking because this is a horse we sent to Chad in late June, he's made every work from his race on, didn't miss a breeze, ran at Saratoga, breezed back two weeks later, ran in the Champagne, breezed back two weeks later, and has made every work since then. I've watched every one on XBTV, and then he shipped out here, and galloped four straight days in front of everybody.”

Weisbord said that after yesterday morning's exercise, M.V. Magnier of Coolmore, part of the colt's ownership group, came by to see Jack Christopher at the barn with Aidan O'Brien. “We put him away, thinking we're 6-5 in the Juvenile, and I was with Mr. Bakke last night when we got the call. Obviously, the whole thing is a shocking blow.”

“I've been doing this for 14 years, and you're always prepared for something like this, but you just don't want it to be with your best horse,” said Weisbord. “Your attention turns to the owner, and how quickly they're going to get back to being in this sort of position again. They have 14 or 15 horses, so it's hard. It's hard for the exercise rider, the groom, and everyone who cares so much about the horse.”

On Wednesday, the Breeders' Cup announced their safety protocols, which stipulated that the horses would be closely watched and examined by veterinarians. “The Breeders' Cup's world-class veterinary team led by Dr. Will Farmer and Dr. Deborah Lamparater will work in conjunction with CHRB Equine Medical Director Dr. Jeff Blea and other official veterinarians to oversee and implement the comprehensive veterinary exam protocols,” their press release said. “These include observing all potential Breeders' Cup runners in the stabling area, on the track and in their stalls leading up to the event in addition to a mandatory pre-race evaluation on Tuesday, Nov. 2 to ensure every runner is fit to race.”

Weisbord said that Jack Christopher would be sent back to Kentucky for a thorough veterinary check.

“Obviously, we're trying to process the whole thing now, but we'll get him back to Kentucky to have Dr. Bramlage go over him from head to toe,” he said. “As a racing manager, I do that with all of my horses. We turn him out, we'll give him 30-45 days, and start our plans for his three-year-old season. This is a not a major thing. That's the good news here. We'll target Grade I races and we think he'll have a great year.”

The chestnut, owned by Jim Bakke, Gerald Isbister, Coolmore Stud and Peter Brant and trained by Chad Brown, made it two-for-two with an eye-catching win in Belmont's GI Champagne S. Oct. 2. The chestnut brought $135,000 at last year's FTKOCT sale.

Grade 1 Champagne Stakes winner Jack Christopher, unbeaten in two starts, has been scratched from Friday's $2 million, Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile because of a reported shin problem. The 9-5 morning line favorite in the 1 1/16-mile contest, the Munnings colt is owned by Jim Bakke, Gerald Isbister, Coolmore Stud and Peter Brant and trained by Chad Brown.

This was the second devastating blow for Brown, who earlier on Thursday told Breeders' Cup officials that three-time G1 winner Domestic Spending would be unable to compete in the $4-million, G1 Turf because of inflammation in a foreleg.

News about Jack Christopher was first reported Thursday evening on Twitter by television racing analyst Michelle Yu and confirmed by Breeders' Cup. Brown did not respond to text messages after the news broke.

Bloodstock agent Bradley Weisbord, racing manager for Bakke, said in a Tweet Thursday evening that Jack Christopher, who earned a 102 Beyer Speed Figure while winning the Champagne by 2 3/4 lengths on Oct. 2, would return to the races as a 3-year-old.

Weisbord later told Thoroughbred Daily News Jack Christopher was scratched on the advice of veterinarians working for Breeders' Cup.

Favoritism in the Juvenile now falls on Bob Baffert-trained Corniche, who like Jack Christopher is unbeaten in two starts. The son of Quality Road won the G1 American Pharoah last out under Mike Smith, earning an 85 Beyer Speed Figure. He was installed the 5-2 second choice behind Jack Christopher in the morning line after drawing the outside post position in what is now a field of 11 2-year-old colts.

Meanwhile, the field for Saturday's $4-million Breeders' Cup Turf took a significant turn on Thursday morning with the news that Domestic Spending, second choice on the morning line at 4-1, and 2019 Turf runner-up United were both scratched because of inflammation.

Klaravich Stable's Domestic Spending is out after trainer Chad Brown said the 4-year-old gelding by Kingman showed inflammation in his left foreleg. Brown told TVG's Christine Blacker the three-time Grade 1 winner did not go to the track Thursday morning and was resting comfortably in his stall. He will be sent to Kentucky for further diagnostics.

<ins data-revive-zoneid=197 data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

<ins data-revive-zoneid=198 data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

Domestic Spending was coming off a second-place finish to Two Emmys in the G1 Mr. D Stakes (formerly the Arlington Million) at Arlington Park on Aug. 14. That ended a four-race win streak dating back to the Saratoga Derby Invitational in August 2020. He followed that with three consecutive G1 wins in the Hollywood Derby at Del Mar last November and this year's Turf Classic at Churchill Downs on Kentucky Derby Day and the Manhattan Stakes at Belmont Park on Belmont Stakes Day.

LNJ Foxwoods' United also had swelling in a leg that trainer Richard Mandella had been monitoring over the last several days

“United a few days had a little swelling over a suspensory ligament,” Mandella told TVG's Michelle Yu. “We scanned it and it was clean. We thought maybe he just hit it. We worked on it a few days and today it was looking good but I thought with the race coming up I'm not going to go in wondering if he's going to be alright or not. So I let him have a strong two-minute lick for a mile, and afterwards there was more swelling there than there had been. So that answered the question: we're not going to take a chance. The good news is it scans clean so there's no real damage, but there's some kind of strain going on and we can't take a risk.”

United, a 6-year-old gelding by Giant's Causeway, was coming off a nose victory in the G2 John Henry Turf Championship at Santa Anita on Oct. 2, his 10th victory in 22 lifetime starts. This would have been United's third run in the Breeders' Cup Turf, having come up a head short of Bricks and Mortar when second in 2019 and eighth behind Tarnawa last year.

United, who was to be ridden by John Velazquez, was 20-1 on the morning line. Flavien Prat, who had been United's regular rider, opted instead to ride Domestic Spending.

The two defections put also-eligibles Bolshoi Ballet from the Aidan O'Brien stable and Bill Mott-trained Channel Maker in the starting field.

On Friday morning, trainer Dan Blacker tweeted the news that Hit The Road had spiked a fever and would be a scratch from the Breeders' Cup Mile.

“Unbelievably bad timing and bad luck,” wrote Blacker. “We will get him healthy, regroup and point for the next race.”

Hit The Road had a 15-1 morning line and was coming to the race after a third-place effort in the G2 City of Hope Mile. Earlier this year he won the G1 Kilroe and the G3 Thunder Road. John Velazquez had the mount.

Aunt Pearl, winner of last year's Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf, has been retired from racing and will be consigned by Elite Sales at Fasig-Tipton's Night of the Stars on Nov. 9 in Lexington, Ky. She will be part of a consignment that features three other Grade 1 winners.

At last year's Fasig-Tipton Night of the Stars, Elite led all consigners by average, median, and gross sales, with its seven-horse consignment producing total sales of more than $22 million. Since its inception in 2017, Elite Sales has led the world in selling racehorses, having sold 15 millionaires in four years.

Aunt Pearl, owned by Michael Dubb, Madaket Stables, Peter Deutsch, Michael Kisber and The Elkstone Group, went undefeated in 2020 with three gate-to-wire scores, culminating in her Breeders' Cup triumph. That race subsequently produced the winners of this year's Group 1 English 1,000 Guineas and the G1 Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot, cementing Aunt Pearl's global status as one of the best of her generation.

The 3-year-old daughter of Lope de Vega, became a TDN 'Rising Star' with a five-length maiden win over the Churchill Downs turf course before setting a new stakes record in winning the G2 Jessamine Stakes at Keeneland, completing the 1 1/16 miles on turf in 1:40 4/5.

Also featured in Elite's Night of the Stars draft is last year's G1 Frizette Stakes winner Dayoutoftheoffice.

Campaigned by Siena Farm and Blazing Meadows Farm, Dayoutoftheoffice will be just the second Grade 1-winning daughter of top sire Into Mischief to be sold at a breeding stock sale. After breaking her maiden in her debut at Gulfstream Park, Dayoutoftheoffice shipped to Saratoga and won the G3 Schuylerville by six lengths before defeating subsequent Eclipse champion Vequist by two lengths in the Frizette. Dayoutoftheoffice rounded out her 2-year-old season with a second-place finish in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies at Keeneland, besting fellow Grade 1 winners Simply Ravishing and Princess Noor.

Elite will also consign Etoile, a 5-year-old Grade 1 winning daughter of leading international sire Siyouni, to the Fasig-Tipton auction.

A top-rung stakes performer on both sides of the Atlantic, she captured last year's G1 E.P. Taylor at Woodbine for owners Peter M. Brant, Mrs. M. V. Magnier, and Mrs. Paul Shanahan. Prior to her Grade 1 victory in North America, Etoile captured France's G3 Prix Cleopatre at Saint-Cloud before missing by just a length in the G1 Prix de Diane. She finished ahead of eight group or listed stakes winners in that classic race, including two G1 winners. Etoile is on schedule to defend her crown in the E.P Taylor Stakes on Oct. 15.

Rounding out Elite's quartet of Grade 1 winners is last year's American Oaks conqueror Duopoly.

Owned by Klaravich Stables, Duopoly won the G1 American Oaks in impressive wire-to-wire fashion, finishing the last quarter mile in a sharp :22.63. She defeated a strong field that included two other G1 winners, one of which was 2019 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf winner, Sharing. Prior to her win at Santa Anita, Duopoly also captured the Winter Memories Stakes at Aqueduct in front running style.

“We are honored that many of the sport's most successful owners are entrusting Elite to bring their best to the marketplace,” said Bradley Weisbord of Elite Sales. “These four Grade 1 winning females, all off the track, should have broad appeal to the world's leading buyers. We look forward to showcasing them at Fasig-Tipton's Night of the Stars on Nov. 9 after the Breeders' Cup.”

Breeders' Cup winner and 'TDN Rising Star' Aunt Pearl (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}–Matauri Pearl {Ire}, by Hurricane Run {Ire}) has been retired and will be entered in the Nov. 9 Fasig-Tipton November Sale, according to a release from Elite Sales, who will consign the 3-year-old filly. Campaigned by Michael Dubb, Madaket Stables, Peter Deutsch, Michael Kisber, and The Elkstone Group, Aunt Pearl was undefeated in three starts at two, beginning with her five-length 'TDN Rising Star' debut in a Churchill Downs maiden special weight and continuing in the GII JPMorgan Chase Jessamine S., where she set a new stakes record, getting the 1 1/16 miles in 1:40.86 over the Keeneland turf. The Brad Cox trainee capped the season with victory in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf. She made just one start this year, as the 1-5 favorite in the GII Edgewood S., but bled after not having raced on Lasix as a 2-year-old and finished off the board. She retires with three wins from four starts and earnings of $661,604.

In addition to Aunt Pearl and the previously announced GI Frizette S. winner Dayoutoftheoffice (Into Mischief), Elite will offer two other Grade I-winning fillies at Fasig's “Night of the Stars.” Lightly raced Duopoly (Animal Kingdom–Justaroundmidnight {Ire}, by Danehill Dancer {Ire}) enters the sale off a win in the Dec. 26 GI American Oaks. She is joined by stablemate Etoile (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}–Milena's Dream {Ire}, by Authorized {Ire}), who is scheduled to try and defend her title in the GI E.P. Taylor Oct. 17 for Chad Brown and the partnership of Peter M. Brant, Mrs. M. V. Magnier, and Mrs. Paul Shanahan.

“We are honored that many of the sport's most successful owners are entrusting Elite to bring their best to the marketplace,” said Elite's Bradley Weisbord. “These four Grade I-winning females, all off the track, should have broad appeal to the world's leading buyers.

Owner Jim Bakke's experience in horse racing has been fairly typical. He started off with a small stable, didn't have much success and waited for his day to come. It looks like he's not going to have to wait any longer.

Along with Gerald Isbister, Bakke is the co-owner of 'TDN Rising Star' Jack Christopher (Munnings), a Chad Brown-trained colt who brought down the house Saturday with an 8 3/4-length maiden win at Saratoga. Jack Christopher, who is named for Bakke's six-month-old grandson, will head to the GI Champagne S., which could be a springboard to the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile. Bakke is also the owner of Girl With a Dream (Practical Joke). She broke her maiden impressively on July 24 at Ellis Park and will make her next start in Sunday's GI Spinaway S. for trainer Brad Cox. The hope is that she will earn her way to the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies.

Jack Christopher earned a 92 Beyer figure, just one point less than the leader among 2-year-olds, Big City Lights (Mr. Big).

Bakke is the president and CEO of Sub-Zero, a luxury refrigeration company based in Madison, Wisconsin that has been in the Bakke family since 1945. A longtime racing fan who attended many a running of the GI Kentucky Derby, he decided to get involved in ownership in the late nineties, but did so on a small scale.

“I started out really small with my brother-in-law, Fred Schwartz,” Bakke explained. “He's the one who introduced me to ownership back then. We had been going to the Derby forever and then we decided to buy some horses about 1998, 1999. We were buying just one or two a year, very modest horses. They were all claimers.”

Bakke enjoyed his first taste of real success when Mr Freeze (To Honor and Serve) came around in 2018. Trained by Dale Romans, he earned $1,595,000 and won the 2018 GIII West Virginia Derby, the GIII 2019 Ack Ack S., the 2020 GII Gulfstream Park Mile S. and the 2020 Hagyard Fayette S. He was also second in the 2020 GI Pegasus World Cup Invitational.

Mr. Freeze, a $75,000 Keeneland September purchase, was part of a plan. Bakke was ready to spend a bit more on horses, building up quantity and quality. Mr Freeze is also co-owned by Isbsiter, who is a distributor for Sub-Zero.

“This has been about my love of the game,” he said. “I was hoping to have a little more luck and the way you do that in horse racing is to increase your numbers, the amount of horses you buy every year and who you have buying them for you.”

Bloodstock advisor Bradley Weisbord signed on to work for Bakke and was told to go find more horses like Mr Freeze.

“I have picked really great partners,” said Bakke, whose stable at this time of year usually numbers from 10 to 12. “Chad Brown is the trainer of Jack Christopher and Bradley Weisbord and his team did a tremendous job finding Jack Christopher.”

Bakke said he offers little, if any, input on picking out the horses, but there is a budget. Liz Crow chose Jack Christopher for $135,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Fall yearling sale, and Girl With a Dream for $115,000 at Keeneland September. That's his price range.

“Potentially, I could buy more expensive horses,” he said. “Over the years, I have bought a few in the 300 to 350 range. But when those horses don't turn out so well, it hurts. Buying them where I'm at right now, if they don't work out we can reload and try again. I have had tremendous luck buying horses in that price range, starting with Mr. Freeze, who I got for $75,000. If you employ people who know what they are looking for and are good at it, I think you can buy a little bit down market and be successful. Let's face it, you need a lot of luck in this game. And even if you do have a successful horse, keeping them sound is another issue. They are so fragile. When you start buying in those upper-price ranges and if your horse doesn't do well or does well and gets hurt, that's just a big bite out of you.”

Bakke is so hands off that he never once spoke to Brown prior to Jack Christopher's debut.

“I think they also appreciate that I don't micro-manage things,” he said. “I don't call them up and ask them how a horse is doing even on a weekly basis. I might call them before a big race or every once in a while. But I don't keep track of the horses on a daily basis. I still have my job back in Madison, so I've got plenty to do on a daily basis.”

Yet, he knew the colt had potential.

“With Jack Christopher, I think Chad was going to wait for the horse to run and let Jack Christopher do the talking,” he said. “I knew he was enthused about the horse because I was getting positive reports.”
While he is optimistic about Jack Christopher's future, Bakke says he tries not to get too carried away with his young horses. With Jack Christopher and Girl With a Dream, that may be hard to do.

“It's great to have these kind of quality 2-year-olds,” he said. “Once in a while, I've hit on a few, but probably nothing like this. Both of them will be running in Grade I's over the next 30 days. We'll see where it goes. It's been a great ride and I'm looking forward to the ride continuing in the future.”

Bradley Weisbord is expected to be released from Weill-Cornell Medical Center in New York City on Saturday, Dec. 19, after a successful six-hour surgery Tuesday to remove a benign cavernous malformation symptomatic hemorrhage in the left temporal lobe of his brain, according to his father.

“The surgery went well, but it was difficult and complex,” said Barry Weisbord. “Brad will recover for six to eight weeks before returning to work in February.”

The surgery was performed by Dr. Philip Stieg, who has been the Neurosurgeon-in-Chief at New York Presbyterian/Weill-Cornell for 20 years.

Weisbord had sent a letter to friends and clients informing them of the impending surgery last Saturday, in which he explained the reasons for the procedure.

“As many of you know, in September of 2018, I was diagnosed with a cavernous malformation; a lesion in the brain that had hemorrhaged,” he wrote in the letter last week. “At that time, this caused the symptoms of severe headaches, speech issues and short-term recall issues. After a few surgical opinions deeming the surgery too risky for one bleed, and the odds that it was unlikely to bleed again (in the short term), I was able to recover to what I feel was 100% in a few months.”

But Weisbord, who suffered a severe bout of COVID-19 at the beginning of the outbreak in America, began feeling symptoms again this fall, he wrote.

“Unfortunately, after my rough bout with COVID-19 in March of this year, an MRI showed a second minor bleed. My neurologist thought this was due to COVID, and we continued to watch it. Most recently, beginning in late October, I have been in a tremendous amount of daily head pain. I waited until our work was done in Kentucky and got a scan as soon as I returned home to New York City in November. The MRI revealed the third, and biggest bleed to date, and we have all decided it’s time to try to safely remove the lesion as the malformation is now growing, considered a chronic bleeder, that if not addressed could lead to deficits down the road.”

The news came after this year’s Fasig-Tipton November Sale, where Weisbord and his partner, Liz Crow, sold the sales topper Monomoy Girl for $9.5 million, a record for a racing or broodmare prospect, among five seven-figure mares.

“Brad got through the sale, albeit in a lot of pain, which he hid well,” said his father. “As such, his doctors felt it was time to remove the lesion, as it was causing severe headaches and hemorrhage and could have become a more serious problem,” said his father.

Stieg performed what is known as an awake craniotomy, a procedure performed while the patient is awake and alert. During the procedure, the surgical team, led by Dr. Babacar Cisse, a neurosurgical expert in brain mapping, and Dr. Heider Alexander Bender, performed cortical mapping to identify the vital areas called the “eloquent brain” that controls speech and movement which surrounded the lesion, approximately the size of a raspberry.

“We all are so grateful to the doctors and feel so fortunate to have found this incredible group of surgeons that will allow him to make a full recovery,” said Barry Weisbord. “The team at BSW/Crow Bloodstock and Elite Sales, including Liz, Katelyn Jackson and Jake Memolo, have been fully prepared to run the business and their upcoming consignment at Keeneland January while he continues to recover. We expect to see him back at full strength and at the races and sales by February.”

Monomoy Girl, owned by Monomoy Stables, Michael Dubb, The Elkstone Group and Bethlehem Stables, was 2018's champion 3-year-old filly and the 2018 Breeders' Cup Distaff winner. She is three-for-three in 2020 and added her most recent Grade 1 win in Friday's La Troienne at Churchill. The six-time Grade 1 winner is now set to target the Breeders' Cup Distaff. She has crossed the finish line first in 13 of 14 lifetime starts.

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

The 2019 champion older mare Midnight Bisou is owned by Bloom Racing Stable, Madaket Stables and Allen Racing. A five-time Grade 1 winner, Midnight Bisou was second in this year's $20-million Saudi Cup to Maximum Security. She has earned over $7.4 million while never being off the board in 22 lifetime starts. Her 13 graded stakes victories equal four-time champion Beholder, and are more than Songbird (12), Ashado (11), Royal Delta (10), and Rachel Alexandra (9). She will run next in the G1 Spinster before a scheduled date in the Breeders' Cup.

Uni (GB), last year's Breeders' Cup Mile winner and champion female turf horse, completes the trio for owners Michael Dubb, Head of Plains Partners, Robert LaPenta and Bethlehem Stables. A three-time Grade 1 winner, Uni finished 2019 on a tear, setting a Keeneland course record when posting a dominant win in the G1 First Lady before her Breeders' Cup Mile triumph at Santa Anita Park. She is on target for a repeat in the G1 First Lady.

“This is a-once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to offer three champions in the prime of their careers,” said Elite Sales' Bradley Weisbord. “They aren't one-hit wonders; they have been leaders in their divisions since they hit the racetrack. With these unprecedented times we look forward to speaking with all interested parties as these mares will appeal to anyone around the World looking to target the highest end of the thoroughbred industry.”

Reigning champion turf mare Uni (GB) (More Than Ready), who finished third in her seasonal debut in the June 27 GI Just A Game S., may make her next start against colts in the GI Fourstardave S. Aug. 22 at Saratoga Race Course. The Chad Brown trainee, who suffered her only loss of 2019 in last year’s Fourstardave, wrapped up her championship-earning season by taking the GI First Lady S. at Keeneland in course-record time and the GI Breeders’ Cup Mile at Santa Anita.

“The only Grade I going a flat mile on the grass at Saratoga is against boys. Will we try it? Probably,” said Bradley Weisbord of BSW/Crow Bloodstock, who manages Uni on behalf of owners Michael Dubb, Head of Plains Partners, Robert LaPenta and Bethlehem Stables. “She was an unlucky loser last year to Got Stormy. We could take that route again this year and try to protect our title in the First Lady at Keeneland and the Breeders’ Cup Mile.”

Since joining Brown in 2017, Uni has placed in all but one of her 13 starts for the trainer, including eight stakes wins at six different tracks. In 2018, Uni won twice over soft and yielding turf in Saratoga’s De La Rose S. and the GIII Noble Damsel S. at Belmont. While the turf was listed as “firm” for the Just a Game, there were rain showers in the Elmont area earlier in the day.

“She’s won on soft turf before, but [jockey] Joel [Rosario] said she was struggling with the turf that day,” said Weisbord of the 6-year-old’s latest start. “She probably needed the race. She had a splint issue in April and breezed four or five times heading into the Just a Game, so she wasn’t super cherry heading into the race and you have to be cherry to beat a filly like Newspaperofrecord. Hats off to Chad for getting her back to Grade I form. She’ll be tough the rest of the year.”

Fellow Brown trainee Rockemperor (Ire) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}), a close second in the GI Manhattan to stable mate Instilled Regard (Arch), could target the Sept. 5 GI Forester Turf Classic at Churchill Downs. The 4-year-old is campaigned by Madaket Stable, Michael Dubb, Wonder Stables, Michael Kisber and Bethlehem Stables.

“It’s hard to know what his best distance his, but a mile and an eighth should hit him right over the head,” Weisbord said. “We’ve gotten beat a lot in stakes, but what made that such a brutal beat [last time] was because he had the horses in front of him collared. I don’t think the horse or Johnny saw Instilled Regard coming.”

Rockemperor has placed in four of his five starts in the United States, including a third in last season’s GI Belmont Derby. He made his seasonal bow in the GII Muniz Memorial Classic at Fair Grounds Mar. 21 before being demoted to third in the May 23 GII Charles Whittingham at Santa Anita.
