The top lot was sourced by Middleham Park and was described as “a standout” on the day by the operation's Tom Palin. 

“We loved him, we thought he was a standout,” said Palin of lot 1919. “He walked around there with a bit of presence. He goes to Eve Johnson Houghton, he's our first horse with her and he's a strong, racy, two-year-old sort and looks to be the type that she'll do well with. Golden Horde was such an impressive racehorse and his stock looks racy. We're delighted to get him.”

Of this week's business Palin added: “We've got stuck in, we got eight since the start of Book 1. It's been competitive for the better lots and we've had to stretch a bit on some of them but it hasn't been silly. It's been sensible but strong. We're delighted with what we've bought.”

Golden Horde is best known for scorching to G1 Commonwealth Cup glory for Clive Cox in 2020. He stands for €8,000 at Montfort et Preaux  and his first yearlings have been well received by the market. 

Of the 1,862 yearlings offered across Book 1, 2, 3 and 4, 1,531 were sold at a clearance rate of 82%. That represented a drop of 4% on last year. 

The aggregate was down 20% to 158,567,500gns while the median fell 10% to 52,000gns and the average by 18% to 103,571gns.

Tattersalls chairman Edmond Mahony commented, “More than 165 million guineas has been spent on yearlings at Tattersalls in the past few weeks which, although some way below last year's runaway record-breaking returns, is a substantial sum that has only been bettered once.

“There have been some memorable highlights in amongst those impressive sums, including the 2,000,000gns October Book 1 sale-topping Frankel colt, who is the highest-priced yearling to be sold in Europe this year, the 725,000gns Dubawi filly, who headed Book 2 and is the second highest-priced filly ever sold at Europe's largest yearling sale, and some astounding pinhooking triumphs throughout the past two weeks which, as ever, reflect the professionalism and commitment of the consignors.

“The pre-eminent status of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sales owes everything to the support of the breeders and consignors, primarily from Britain and Ireland, but also from France, Germany and Italy, who entrust us with the cream of the European yearling crop year after year.

Not because the price wasn't expected as the quality of their offering was never in doubt. But when the filly gave herself a nasty cut en route to Book 1 and was forced to miss that engagement, plans B, C and D whirled through the head of her breeder Damien Burns.

To the delight of Burns, his Dubawi filly out of Galileo (Ire) mare Park Bloom (Ire) proved a model patient and made a swift enough recovery to sell as the sole wildcard on Monday and, in doing so, ended what was a tumultuous few days on a high note. 

Burns explained, “She got on the lorry and she was doing a little bit of jumping round, nothing unusual for any yearling, but the video from the next door stall and our best guess is that her headcollar got caught and she cut her jaw. This happened as they were going down the driveway! She came off the lorry and went back to her stable. She was fine but had a laceration on her jaw.

“We took her down to Fethard [equine hospital], they stitched her up, kept her overnight and she ate up fine. She got back home, and she was back out in her paddock. The Friday before Book 1 we got in touch with Tattersalls and the transporters and said, 'look we think this filly will be okay.”

He added, “The wheels were set in motion to come here for today. A lot of thanks goes to the guys at home. We were over here with Book 1 horses and they did a great job. Thanks also to Tattersalls for accommodating this. I think it helped being a week in front so we had time.

“We discussed everything and waiting for the December Sale was the original thought. It might have also meant us putting a saddle on her, but usually we don't keep them out of young mares as we are a commercial stud. We try to let them get a few foals sold–they are easier to look at when they have paid for themselves!”

Godolphin spent 2.675 million gns on four yearlings by Dubawi during Book 1 and, according to Anthony Stroud, who buys on behalf of the powerful operation among others, Monday's sale-topper stacked up with the best that was on offer here at Tattersalls last week. 

Stroud said, “She moved very well and has a good outlook. Obviously she's by Dubawi, who's an unbelievable stallion. She's bred on a good cross and comes from a very good farm, so we're very lucky to receive her. She compares very favourably with the stock on offer at Book 1, she's a lovely filly. She's very classy.”

He added, “They did very well to get her here this week–there's a scar under her jaw but the vets have clearly done a very good job. She's behaved incredibly well, especially considering she's been through a lot.”

Park Bloom boasts a Book 1 pedigree being a sister to Was, Amhran Na Bhfiann and Douglas MacArthur. She is from a deep family that goes back to Park Express (GB) and New Approach (Ire).

Burns concluded, “She is quite typical of Dubawi, but with a bit more action than some, which she gets from her dam line–that bit of quality. She vetted very well–the family does tend to vet well, I don't know why, those hidden genetics you can't see!

“The family has been very good to us. The Night Of Thunder [Lot 129 in Book 1] who sold for 400,000gns is from another branch. We have Park Bloom, Stellar Glow and a Dark Angel four-year-old filly called Express Way who won her sole start. She is in foal to Night Of Thunder. Park Bloom has a Wootton Bassett on the ground and is in foal to Baaeed.”

'We'd Be Delighted To See Her At Royal Ascot' – That Would Be Amazing

Peter and Michelle Morgan were left thanking their lucky stars for the heavy helping of good fortune involved in selling their homebred Showcasing (GB) filly to Ben McElroy on behalf of Stonestreet Stables for 325,000gns. 

It was at this sale in 2017 where Carmel Stud put So Brave (GB) (Kyllachy {GB}), the dam of the Showcasing filly, on the market. However, the sales experience proved a bit much for So Brave and, after getting herself into a bit of a tizzy, she picked up a minor injury and was led out unsold at 30,000gns. 

The husband-and-wife team at Carmel Stud may not have viewed it as such at the time, but So Brave failing to sell six years ago has worked out to be the best thing for the operation. 

Peter said after Monday's sale, “I've only just stopped shaking! This is the classic case of getting lucky as we brought the dam to the sales a few years ago but she just lost the plot and got injured so we had to withdraw her. 

“We ended up racing her and she won a couple of races. Now, she has turned out to be a beautiful broodmare. If things hadn't gone wrong on that day, and it was a complete disaster at the time, we wouldn't now be in this position. It's a great day. You need luck at times.”

So Brave has already produced the goods for Carmel Stud. Her Havana Grey (GB) filly Queen's Guard (GB) looks a high-class prospect for Michael Bell having been sourced by Joe Foley on behalf of Clipper Logistics for 125,000gns at Book 3 last year. 

Peter continued, “The mare has already produced Queen's Guard, who is in training with Michael Bell. Unfortunately she didn't run in the Lowther because of the ground but she looks a very nice filly for next year. The mare has a lovely Pinatubo (Ire) colt foal at foot and is in foal to Blue Point (Ire).”

Asked if he expected the Showcasing filly to rock into 325,000gns, he replied, “No, absolutely not. She had 15 vets and over 180 shows. She was incredibly busy. She is a lovely model and lots of people liked her but, we're a bit like trainers approaching a race, as the closer we get to a sale, the less confident we are! We thought that she'd make one hundred thousand-plus, but it was certainly a good result. 

“Plenty of really good judges liked her. Ben McElroy bought her on behalf of Stronestreet so we'd be delighted to see her run at Royal Ascot next year–that would be amazing.” 

Monday's result represented one of the biggest Carmel Stud have achieved in the ring and Peter paid special tribute to local stud director Ed Harper of Whitsbury Manor, where Showcasing is based. 

He said, “Whitsbury Manor is our local stud. They are only fifty minutes away. Ed [Harper] has been a great help to us and, without his help, this probably wouldn't have happened today.”

Talking points

• One of the main takeaways from Book 1 was the strength of the top tier of the market and the patchiness of the middle tiers. With that in mind, there was some justifiable caution leading into the trade at Tattersalls this week but the early signs were positive. Granted the average was bolstered by the Dubawi filly who was initially placed in Book 1, but an aggregate of 18,530,500gns, average of 88,240gns and median of 69,000 bodes well for the rest of the week. A clearance rate of 84% compared to 86% on day one last year provides further encouragement for the week ahead.
• Anthony Oppenheimer carried on the momentum of a strong Book 1 sale for his Hascombe & Valiant Stud Ltd operation by accounting for the second-highest lot of the day, a Too Darn Hot (GB) colt, who sold to Stroud Coleman Bloodstock 350,000gns. Hascombe & Valiant Stud Ltd sold four horses on Monday for 830,000gns.
• There is no stopping Alex Elliott. The bloodstock agent spent more than 6 million gns on behalf of some of the biggest names in the game during Book 1. Elliott was busy again on Monday when signing for seven yearlings to the tune of 895,000gns and ended the day as the second busiest buyer.
• Pinatubo continues to impress. Once again, his yearlings were very well received by the market with Justin Casse, Najd Stud, Ed Sackville, Robson Aguiar and Ben McElroy some of the notable names on the list of buyers of the stallion's progeny. All told, Pinatubo averaged 186,333gns for six yearlings sold on Monday.
• Book 2 may have been billed as something of 'a bread and butter sale' by Tattersalls' Jason Singh when interviewed on Racing TV over the weekend and, while that is true, there was still plenty of international interest on day one. Along with Najd Stud and Ben McElroy getting in on the action, Nicolas De Watrigant of Mandore International Agency was another interesting buyer. The French-based De Watrigant spent 385,000gns on three yearlings headed by a No Nay Never filly from Watership Down Stud for 260,000gns.

'It's Fun For Sheikha Hissa' – Shadwell Spends Over 500k At Book 2

Shadwell's Angus Gold hinted after signing for a 1.6 million gns Frankel (GB) filly at Book 1 that Sheika Hissa may continue her shopping into this week. 

Well, we didn't have to wait long to find out whether that would come to fruition or not, with Shadwell signing for four yearlings for 665,000gns on day one of Book 2.

The haul was headed by a 230,000gns Night Of Thunder colt who, interestingly, is out of a mare that was dispersed by Shadwell in 2021 for 135,000gns to Blandford Bloodstock. 

“We bought three today, which is great,” Gold said. “We bought an elegant Mohaather (GB) colt for 75,000gns early in the day. Obviously, nobody knows yet about the stallion but I just thought this was a very elegant horse with a lot of scope to him. I don't think he'll be terribly early but I like the look of him.”

He added, “We bought a very nice Galiway (GB) filly that Sheikha Hissa liked very much. We haven't had one of those before but she seemed to have a great attitude. The Night Of Thunder colt is out of Ridaa (Ire) (New Approach {Ire}), who we sold during our dispersal. He's a nice solid horse and looks like a runner.”

It was well-bred fillies that were placed at the top of Shadwell's wish list for Book 1 but the modus operandi on Monday was a simple one; buy racehorses, be that colts or fillies. 

Explaining the brief, Gold continued, “We're mainly buying fillies but, for interest, as Sheikha Hissa is here, we have been showing her a few colts. We bought one colt here last year. He hasn't run yet but Sheikha Hissa said that she'd like to come and look at a few colts this year as well as the fillies. We'll try to cherry pick a few for her to see and she likes to see what the offspring of particular stallions look like. It's fun for her.”

Gold added, “We've had plenty of success from Book 2 and found plenty of good racehorses here. It's not the sort of thing where one can say, 'we'll only buy in Book 1 and leave Book 2 and 3,' because an awful amount of good horses have come out of here. There's a thousand-odd horses so I think this week is much more of a buyers' market. You get to see a good cross-section. It's a good sale to work.”

The Night Of Thunder was consigned by Greyridge Bloodstock, who were getting off to a dream start at Tattersalls. The new consignment is run from Denis and Clare Barry's Wiltshire-based Glebe Farm Stud and is managed by Carwyn Johns. 

“It has gone full circle and this colt has gone home,” Johns said. “He was the big one for us for the year. We bought the mare with Tom Biggs of Blandford Bloodstock.”

Earthlight (Ire) colt out of One Spirit (Ire) 

Consigned by Ballyhimikin Stud 

Purchased by Qatar Racing, China Horse Club and David Howden 

Out of the Listed winner and Group 3-placed One Spirit (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), who is already the dam of Group 3 winner One For Bobby (Ire) Frankel {GB}), this Earthlight colt proved to be well-bought as a foal by Johnny McKeever and Ballyhimikin Stud at the Goffs November Foal Sale. 

The pair turned their initial outlay of €90,000 into 200,000gns on Monday with David Redvers, the China Horse Club and David Howden the winning bidders. 

These same connections have been busy snapping up well-bred colts at the premier yearling sales this year. After a strong Orby Sale, where Redvers revealed that the group were on the hunt for well-bred colts that could one day go to stud depending on what they achieved on the race track, they went on to spend over 1.1 million on three colts at Book 1. 

From the same family as Diktat (GB) and Cape Cross (Ire), the Earthlight colt fits that sort of criteria and was clearly well bought by McKeever and Ballyhimikin Stud as a foal given they more than doubled their money here. 

Buy of the day

Mark and Charlie Johnston are famous for bagging bargains at the yearling sales and they may well have found one in the shape of lot 584, a Saxon Warrior (Jpn) colt out of champion older mare in France, Pride (Fr) (Peintre Celebre). 

Consigned by Ballyhimikin Stud, the Saxon Warrior is a half-brother to six winners, including the smart One Foot In Heaven and Queen.

He looks the type that could develop into a nice three-year-old and has plenty of scope. 

Older mares are not for everyone, and the fact that Pride was 22 when she produced this colt may have resulted in him being a bit of value in the ring. He looks well bought at 100,000gns.

Thought for the day

How early is too early to start blowing up a first season sire? Darley knocked it out of the park with Blue Point this season and the early signs are that Pinatubo is cut from the same cloth. An outstanding racehorse, Pinatubo seems to have really stamped his stock and a lot of the top judges have declared themselves a fan. He could be the real deal.

Topping Saturday's sale was a daughter of G2 Richmond S. hero Land Force (Ire) (lot 2086) from Natton House Thoroughbreds, Ltd. From the same family as G1 Irish Derby and G1 Sheema Classic hero and sire Jack Hobbs (GB) (Halling), she went to Alfa Site for 23,000gns.

Overall, the October Yearling Sale featured the world's most expensive yearling to sell this year at 2.8 million gns, a son of Frankel (GB) (lot 221) out of the Group 3 winner and G1 Prix de l'Opera third So Mi Dar (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}). The dam is a full-sister to three-time Group 1 winner and sire Too Darn Hot (GB), as well as G2 Middleton S. heroine Lah Ti Dar (GB), who was second in the G1 St Leger S. and third in both the G1 British Champions Fillies & Mares S. and G1 Yorkshire Oaks.

Book 1 closed with 73 horses, or 17.2% of those sold, changing hands for 500,000gns or more. There were also 16 seven-figure lots. Book 2 also set records for turnover (60,780,500gns, +11%), average (96,020gns, +14%) and median (70,000gns, +13%). The demand for quality bloodstock did not slacken in Book 3 either, with gains of 9% in total turnover to 11,554,600gns. The average advanced 8.6% to 24,428gns and the median also increased to 20,000gns (+11.1%)

Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony said on Saturday, “This has been the most extraordinary Tattersalls October Yearling Sale. Book 1 set the ball rolling and it has rolled all the way through to the very end with more yearlings sold than ever before for the astounding sum of 199 million guineas.

There was a broader spread of buyers, but Stroud Coleman Bloodstock, whose principal Anthony Stroud had been so busy on behalf of Sheikh Mohammed's Godolphin operation during Book 1, was again active throughout, with the agency ending Book 2 as the leading buyer with 23 bought for 5,625,000gns.

Tally-Ho Stud dominated the consignors' list all week, and the farm's flagship stallion Kodiac (GB) was paid several compliments by leading owner-breeders keen to buy his daughters, notably Cheveley Park Stud and Watership Down Stud, who spent 320,000gns and 150,000gns on a filly each.

In his closing statement, Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony  referred to “Three extraordinary record-breaking days at Book 1”, which was neatly followed by more records tumbling at Book 2 for the second year running. The average of 96,020gns was up by 14%, while the median also climbed, by 13% to 70,000gns. At the final fall of hammer after three days and another 732 yearlings through the ring at Park Paddocks and a clearance rate of 86%, Book 2 had pulled in 60,780,500 (+11%) to add to the 126,671,000gns accrued from Book 1 yearlings.

“The word most commonly used to describe the trade we have experienced throughout this week has been 'unrelenting',” Mahony said. “There have been records established in pretty well every conceivable category. Turnover, average and median have all reached unprecedented levels and yet again Book 2 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale has been the second-highest grossing yearling sale in Europe, second only to Book 1. The number of yearlings selling for 200,000gns or more is a wide margin record as is the number selling for 300,000gns or more, and never before have seven yearlings at Book 2 of the October Yearling Sale broken the 500,000-guinea mark.”

He continued, “Following on from Book 1, buyers from America, Australia, Hong Kong, Japan, and throughout the Gulf region have all continued to make significant contributions over the past three days. European buyers have also been conspicuous at all levels of the market while the domestic British and Irish demand continues to be the bedrock of Europe's largest yearling sale which annually showcases so many of the best commercial yearlings to be found and consistently produces top class horses like this year's outstanding unbeaten Derby winner Desert Crown.”

The Stroud And Ballylinch Show

Anthony Stroud signed for two members of a strong Ballylinch Stud draft, for two different owners. Lot 1303, a Lope De Vega (Ire) filly out of a Galileo (Ire) half-sister to the classy dual Group 1 winner Chriselliam (Ire), went the way of Godolphin for 650,000gns, but Stroud had to see off a determined attempt from the Coolmore camp.

“I knew she'd sell well but I did not expect that,” said John O'Connor, manager of Ballylinch Stud, which bred the filly. “But when you get a clash between two very interested buyers, these things can happen. There were lots of people on her, too. This is a family we have been associated with a long time. I originally bought [third dam] Ingabelle from Tom Lacy, Tony Lacy's father, and we have bred most of the black-type horses on this page.”

Along with Chriselliam, the filly's dam Gallitea (Ire) is a half-sister to the G2 Cape Verdi S winner Very Special (Ire), herself by Lope De Vega. The further family also includes Ingabelle's champion 2-year-old daughter Priory Belle (Ire) (Priolo) and her half-sister, the G1 Premio Lydia Tesio winner Eva's Request (Ire) (Soviet Star).

Lope De Vega was not the only one of the Ballylinch stallions to feature prominently on Wednesday. With Night Of Thunder (Ire) having been hugely popular through Books 1 and 2 at Tattersalls, it was the turn of another son of Dubawi (Ire), New Bay (GB), to shine in the closing session when Anthony Stroud went to 425,000gns for lot 1264, the half-brother to G3 Concorde S. winner Statement (Ire) (Lawman {Fr}).

Peter Harris, the former successful breeder and trainer at his Pendley Farm in Hertfordshire, has meant business with his purchases this week, and this colt out of the Lope De Vega (Ire) mare Fact Or Folklore (Ire) is another to be joining Jane Chapple-Hyam's Newmarket stable, where Harris already has a number of horses in training. The trainer will be delighted with the latest recruit as she had great success with the offspring of his sire of late, including with the dual Group 1 winner Saffron Beach (GB) and Group 3 winner Claymore (Fr), both of whom won at Royal Ascot this year.

“The trainers really like the New Bays,” said O'Connor. “And with the kind of mares he is covering now he has the opportunity to step to a higher level again. Every horse has to take that opportunity, but we believe he can. The major players are still here and they are still anxious to buy nice horses. There were plenty of bids coming for him from all over the sale ring.”

New Bay had nine yearlings sell in Book 2 for an average price of 141,333gns.

Knight Starstruck for Ballyvolane Colt

A strong sale for Starspangledbanner (Aus) included a colt from John Foley's Ballyvolane Stud out of the Dandy Man (Ire) mare Great Dame (Ire), who brought the hammer down at 600,000gns and was signed for by Richard Brown. Lot 1321 was bred by The Great Dame Partnership and is the first foal of the half-sister to the G2 Goldene Peitsche winner Donnerschlag (GB) (Bahamian Bounty {GB}) and to listed winner Izzy Bizu (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}). The mare has a Churchill (Ire) filly foal on the ground and was covered this year by Ardad (Ire).

Richard Knight, active through Book 1 but quiet so far this week, signed for the colt and said, “He was the only one we picked out in this sale, thought he was a lovely individual. I like the fact that the mare was a useful 2-year-old herself and he looks like he will be sharp. We felt he will be a great addition to the horses we have already bought and he shouldn't take a huge amount of time.”

Now five, Great Dame, won at two over the minimum trip for the Nick Bradley Racing syndicate and was bought three years ago at the December Sale by Barry Lynch for 28,000gns.

The Nays Have It

A horse that can do it on both sides of the world, No Nay Never had a good day on Wednesday, siring the G1 Thousand Guineas winner Madame Pommery (Aus) at Caulfield in Melbourne and featuring among the leaders during the final day of Book 2 yearlings at Tattersalls.

His popularity this sales season is no surprise given the season No Nay Never has had, which includes Group 1 victories from Blackbeard (Ire), Little Big Bear (Ire) and the tough filly Alcohol Free (Ire), who extended her tally of top-level wins to three at ages two, three and four.

His colt consigned by John Cullinan and Roger Marley of Church Farm & Horse Park Stud as lot 1113 was an expensive foal-turned-even more expensive yearling when the duo's initial investment of 110,000gns last December grew to 360,000gns.

Reporting an “up-and-down week”, Cullinan said of the son of Bright Sapphire (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), “The whole way through the year, I always thought he was our banker.”

His confidence was justified when MV Magnier agreed with him and snapped up the half-brother to the G2 Herbert Power S. winner Wall Of Fire (Ire) (Canford Cliffs {Ire}).

Charlie Gordon-Watson was another to plump for No Nay Never, buying lot 1180, Baroda Stud's son of the G3 Park Express S. winner Czabo (GB) (Sixties Icon {GB}), for 325,000gns following an earlier purchase from Manister House Stud of lot 1155, for Al Shaqab Racing, at 220,000gns. The latter, out of the useful dual winner Conniption (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}), was bred by Frank Hutchinson.

No Nay Never's average for Book 2 weighed in at 162,357gns for 14 sold.

Shadwell Invests

As we count down to the swansong of Baaeed (GB) in Saturday's G1 QIPCO British Champion S., it has been encouraging to see his owner Sheikh Hissa present at Park Paddocks on several occasions over the last fortnight, and her Shadwell operation signed for eight yearlings at Book 2, seven of which were fillies.

Heading the list was lot 1190, a Siyouni (Fr) second foal of the listed-placed Dancing Breeze (Ire) (New Approach {Ire}), who was bought from the Castlebridge Consignment for 350,000gns.

Bred by Merry Fox Stud, which also enjoyed some decent results during Book 1, the filly's dam is a half-sister to G3 Desmond S winner Future Generation (Ire) (Hurricane Run {Ire}), who is in turn the dam of G2 Prix de Chaudenay winner Brundtland (Ire).

Havana Field Day

Whitsbury Manor Stud can not only bask in the glory of having bred the G1 Dewhurst S winner Chaldean (GB) (Frankel {GB}), but the Hampshire farm is also being well represented by its freshman sire Havana Grey (GB) this season.

The former sprinter has sired 36 winners for far this season, including the one-two in Friday's G3 Cornwallis S. courtesy of Rumstar (GB) and Maylandsea (GB), so it was therefore no surprise to see his yearlings closely scrutinised at the sales.

Havana Grey's former trainer Karl Burke landed the most expensive of the group at Book 2, bidding 325,000gns for lot 1226, Kilminfoyle House Stud's Stud's colt out of Dotted Swiss (GB), a three-time winner by the farm's former resident winner Swiss Spirit (GB).

“I saw the colt on Sunday and really liked him straightaway,” Burke said. “He's a strong, powerful horse, very like his sire and came highly recommended. I've had four or five this year by him and this is by far the nicest.”

The transaction secured yet another good result for one the best pinhookers in the business, Michael Fitzpatrick, who bought the colt from his breeder Whitsbury Manor Stud at Park Paddocks last year for 56,000gns,

He said, “I thought he was the best foal here on the Saturday of last year's foal sale. It was big price to give for him as a foal but it has paid off.

Fitzpatrick added, “He looks sharp, and does look a real Royal Ascot 2-year-old. Havana Grey has gone from strength to strength this season, and I'd like to wish Karl Burke all the best with him. Hopefully he can become the next Havana Grey.”

Burke, who buys in partnership with his daughter Kelly, also picked up a colt by another Whitsbury Manor stallion, Showcasing (GB), with whom he has enjoyed great success in the past, notably through the Group 1-winning sprinter Quiet Reflection (GB) and G2 Mill Reef S. winner Toocoolforschool (Ire).

The trainer went to 300,000gns for the colt out of the G3 Musidora S. winner Give And Take (GB) (Cityscape {GB}) from Nicholas Jones's Coln Valley Stud, the sole offering from the breeder in Book 2.

Whitsbury Manor did have its own good result with Havana Grey, however, when selling lot 1233 for 220,000gns to Stroud Coleman Bloodstock. The colt is the first living foal of Dundunah (Sidney's Candy), a winning half-sister to the Grade II-placed Cuvee Uncorked (Cuvee).

Havana Grey, who stood for £6,500 in his second season, recorded a Book 2 average of 150,857gns for seven yearlings sold.

Another 15 yearlings by Havana Grey will be offered in Book 3, which is where the attention now turns for Thursday and Friday during which another 600 or so yearlings will pass through the ring before a short Book 4 session on Saturday morning. It is worth recalling that two of this year's star fillies, Lezoo (GB) (Zoustar {Aus}) and Oscula (Ire) (Galileo Gold {GB}) were found respectively in these sections of the sale in 2021 and 2020, as Edmond Mahony referenced in his closing address for Book 2.

He said, “The support we receive from so many breeders and consignors from Britain, Ireland and further afield is the key to the enduring popularity of the October Yearling Sales at Tattersalls and is hugely appreciated. There is quality to be found at every level and next up is Book 3 of the October Yearling Sale, which has produced two of this year's top European 2-year-olds; Lezoo, recent winner of the Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes, and Crypto Force, the impressive winner of the Group 2 Beresford S.”

Book 3 gets underway on Thursday at the slightly earlier time of 9:30 a.m.

For an unnamed owner already in Varian's Newmarket stable, the chestnut is a son of the dual listed winner Along Came Casey (Ire) (Oratorio {Ire}), who has already been represented by three previous six-figure offspring, including the four-time winner Abnaa (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}).

“We tried for the Sea The Stars colt who topped the sale yesterday,” Varian said. Quite a few horses this week have that real Book 1 quality.

“The stallion can't do much wrong at the moment, the mare was a stakes winner and has bred a very good one already. We had to dig deep to get him, but we are delighted.”

The consistent demand for offspring of the stallions of the calibre of Sea The Stars, Frankel (GB), Night Of Thunder (Ire) and Dark Angel (Ire) has fuelled strong trade since the start of the October Yearling Sale, and if Monday's start to Book 2 was a little hesitant, trade roared back into life on Tuesday. Turnover was up by 26% for one fewer yearling sold on the same day last year, with 23,366,000gns paid for 217 yearlings at a clearance rate that remained steady at 88%. The average was also up by 26% at 107,677gns, while the median rose by 8% to 70,000gns.

Breeder Noel O'Callaghan's Mountarmstrong Stud was responsible for one of the late highlights of the evening when the second foal of his French listed winner Asidious Alexander (Ire) (Windsor Knot {Ire}) was the subject of a bidding tussle between Ben McElroy, Richard Brown and Jamie McCalmont, with the latter coming out on top at 575,000gns for Coolmore.

The colt was yet another expensive yearling by Darley's increasingly popular Night Of Thunder (Ire), whose Book 2 average is currently running at 178,400gns for 20 sold, putting him at the top of the sires' list so far this week.

Chasemore Colt to Hong Kong

A strapping bay son of Starspangledbanner (Aus) provided another sale-ring highlight for Chasemore Farm when selling for 550,000gns to the Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC).

Standing only metres part, the HKJC representative Mick Kinane and Dr. Jim Hay exchanged bids for a time, with Kinane finally having his way for the brother to the Group 3-placed juvenile Breege (GB) and out of a half-sister to one of Starspangledbanner's best runners, The Wow Signal (Ire).

Chasemore's Andrew and Jane Black bought the colt's dam Wowcha (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) as a yearling at Goffs UK and she went on to win as a 3-year-old, before producing two winners with her first two runners, including Breege, who this season has been placed in both the G3 Princess Margaret S. and G3 Prestige S.

Chasemore's manager Jack Conroy said of lot 1008, “The Wow Signal was an unbelievable racehorse and the mare was lovely and scopey so it made a lot of sense to send her to Starspangledbanner. Breege has obviously really helped the pedigree as well.

“[The colt] has been incredibly popular–I've never had so many vettings on a horse, even in Book 1. Sadly we lost the mare last November but she has left us Breege.”

Chasemore sold four horses at Book 1, all for six figures and led by a 750,000gns Kingman (GB) colt out of Wall Of Sound (GB) (Singspiel {Ire}).

Reflecting on the stud's good run, Conroy added, “I'm really proud of the job the team has done last week and this week. Every horse is prepped exactly the same, from Book 1 to Book 3, and we have had a lot of comments on how well they look. We take a lot of pride in that.

“It's an incredibly busy week and our Book 3 horses have just arrived but hopefully we can celebrate on Champions Day. A Group 1 win for [homebred] Brad The Brief would be a nice way to round off the week.”

Starspangledbanner ended up with two yearlings in the day's top eight as nine lots later (lot 1017) came New England Stud's half-sister to the listed winner Mrs Gallagher (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}), bred by ORS Bloodstock and Stanley House Stud, who was signed for by Hugo Merry at 340,000gns.

Suhail Back for a Frankel

In an increasingly familiar refrain, Frankel (GB) also featured prominently on Tuesday's leaderboard, with two of his yearlings occupying spots in the top five.

The top lot for much of the day was lot 853, a colt bred by Andrew Rosen and Edward Easton from September Stars (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire})) and, at 450,000gns, he became the latest yearling to be recruited by agent Richard Brown on behalf of owner Saeed Suhail, the owner of Desert Crown (GB).

“We tried on a load of Frankels last week and didn't get close,” said Brown. “He is an immature horse, he needs a little bit of imagination, but there is a lot of improvement to come, he is a big frame. He will be given plenty of time and hopefully will reward us as a 3-year-old.”

A Book 1 graduate herself, September Stars, a half-sister to Group 3 winner Teodoro (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) and Group 1-placed Altruistic (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) from the Wildenstein family of Arcangues and Aquarelliste (Fr), went on to win at stakes level in California for Patrick Gallagher. Her current 2-year-old, a filly by Kingman (GB), is in training with Roger and Harry Charlton.

Like Watership Down Stud, Fittocks Stud also enjoyed a good week during Book 1, and the Cumani team returned to the limelight on Tuesday when selling a Frankel filly (lot 974) out of a Lawman (Fr) half-sister to the treble Group 1 winner and Japan-based sire Admire Mars (Jpn) (Daiwa Major {Jpn}). Following a theme from Monday, the filly had her roots in a family which has been well cultivated by Andreas Putsch at Haras de Saint Pair, who bred both her dam Via Lazio (GB) and granddam Via Medici (Ire) (Medicean {GB}).

Michael Donohoe of BBA Ireland saw off both Shadwell and Juddmonte to buy the filly at 425,000gns.

“We bought Via Lazio in 2019 carrying to Zoustar (Aus). She is a young mare and from a great family, and she is in foal to Time Test (GB) with a Sea The Moon (Ger) filly this year,” said Sara Cumani of Fittocks Stud.

“We put the [Frankel] filly in Book 2 because we thought she might be a little bit lost with the great big Frankels in Book 1. We couldn't be happier with that result. She is a real pocket rocket, we wish the new connections the best of luck.”

Peter Harris Strikes for Ballyshannon Colt

Peter Harris has seen his colours carried to glory by two juveniles trained by Jane Chapple-Hyam this year and the former trainer and breeder has been reinvesting in some yearlings this week at Tattersalls, including lot 991, a colt by Sea The Stars (Ire) bought from Ballyshannon Stud for 350,000gns. Anthony Stroud signed for the first foal of the G3 Fairy Bridge S. winner Waitingfortheday (Ire) (Elzaam {Aus}), and he had also been responsible for the purchase of Audarya (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}), who carried the Harris silks to Group 1 glory in the name of Peter's daughter Alison Swinburn.

Having confirmed that Jane Chapple-Hyam will take charge of the colt, Harris said, “I like first foals because you start with a clean sheet. I always ignore first-season sires as 75% of them are no good, but statistically a mare's first and second foals tend to be better–that's my theory anyway.”

James Hughes of Ballyshannon Stud, who consigned the colt on behalf of breeder Angela Roche, said, “He has gone to a good home, and it is fantastic result for a first foal. The credit has to go to the staff at home: they have reared him and from the feedback we have been getting, we've done okay.”

Hughes purchased the Kildare-based Ballyshannon Stud with his mother Fiona, who died last year. “She would have got a great kick out of this,” he said. “It would have been great to have had her here too.”

Ballyhimikin's Beauty

A Ballyhimikin Stud yearling towards the top of the charts is a familiar sight at Tattersalls, and James Hanly's dependable outfit delivered again on Tuesday with lot 930, a colt by Night Of Thunder (Ire), who will go into training with John and Thady Gosden after being bought at 340,000gns by Anthony Stroud. The agent also purchased the colt's full-sister this time last year for the more modest sum of 38,000gns.

“He is a beauty, the sire didn't do any harm either–I should put up a statue of him,” said Hanly, who raced the colt's dam Syndicate (GB) (Dansili {GB}), having bought her through Stroud from Juddmonte as a 3-year-old for 25,000gns.

“The pedigree has really come good since we bought her. My friend John Feane trained her and won with her in England. She showed a lot of ability.”

The mare's two full-brothers, Runnymede (GB) and Stipulate (GB) are both stakes winners, and the further family also includes the G1 Prix Jean Prat winner Mutual Trust (GB) (Cacique {GB}).

Smart Fillies Signed Up By Breeders

Big owner-breeders joined the buyers' bench on Tuesday with Cheveley Park Stud, who were “on the hunt for sharper types” going to 320,000gns for lot 862, Tally-Ho Stud's sister to Indestructible (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}), who has twice finished runner-up to G1 Dewhurst winner Chaldean (GB), in the G3 Acomb S and G2 Champagne S.

Shadwell paid the same amount for lot 847, a filly by Too Darn Hot (GB) from Newsells Park Stud's signature family of Shastye (GB) (Danehill). The yearling's dam Secret Sense (Shamardal) is a half-sister to the Galileo (Ire) Group 1 winners Japan (GB) and Mogul (GB), and to Group 2 winner Secret Gesture (GB).

“She looks a very tough filly, there is a masculine look about her and plenty of Shamardal,”said Shadwell's Angus Gold. “We are trying to find fillies with pedigrees, she has one of the best pages in the book.”

Coolmore Purchase to Kingsclere

Hillwood Stud has had a successful first two days at Book 2, with Tuesday's offerings including a Lope De Vega (Ire) filly sold for 300,000gns to Alex Elliott on behalf of MV Magnier.

“She'll go to Andrew Balding,” the agent confirmed. “The brother is not a bad horse–he won a Newmarket maiden–and the mare was rated 100 and is by Sea The Stars. It's a great staying family, she'll take a bit of time and I'm delighted to get her.”

The dam Yarrow (Ire) emanates from the Ballymacoll Stud family that included 2000 Guineas winner Golan (Ire) and Derby runner-up Tartan Bearer (Ire), and her second foal, the juvenile Tenerife Sunshine (GB), is the Newmarket winner in training with Mark and Charlie Johnston.

Pinhookers In Clover

Among several notably good pinhooks during the second session, the brothers David and Tom Brickley of And Erin Stud deserved a gold star to go with their considerable profit made on lot 873. Bought for 50,000gns last year, the Exceed And Excel colt did of course benefit from several striking updates from his half-brother, the 'TDN Rising Star' Sakheer (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}), the winner of the G2 Mill Reef S. who is owned by KHK Racing.

Oliver St Lawrence bought the 2-year-old colt at the breeze-ups, and he returned for the yearling, going to 270,000gns on behalf of associates of Fawzi Nass.

“He is an absolute dude of a horse, an absolute dude,” said Tom Brickley. “Sakheer came up, too, and the stars aligned, it is exciting stuff.

“He has been straightforward all the way through and we think he is a champion. Let's hope he's an Ascot 2-year-old for next year–we've never been to Royal Ascot.

The colt, who was bred by Conor and Deirdre Cashman's Drumlin Bloodstock, is out of Shortmile Lady (Arcano), who, along with Sakheer is also responsible for the Group 3 winner Lemista (Raven's Pass).

Barry Mahon and Michael Fitzpatrick also know their stuff when it comes to pinhooking and the Mahon family's Mountain View Stud sold a smart son of Darley freshman Masar (Ire) for 240,000gns to Ed Sackville.

Consigned as lot 925, the son of Sweet Lady Rose (Ire) (Shamardal) was bred by David Botterill and sold as a foal for 32,000gns.

Masar's nine yearlings sold through Book 2 so far have averaged 100,444gns.

Havana Grey is Gals' Best Pal

An all-female pinhooking syndicate named The Gals Gals had an excellent first foray into the yearling market, turning their 21,000gns foal into a 150,000gns yearling. Their cause was helped by the fact that the colt was by one of this year's leading first-season sires Havana Grey (GB), but there was plenty of collective experience among the four young women who picked him out at Tattersalls last December and produced him for Book 2.

Led by Kildaragh Stud's Alice Kavanagh, the Gals Gals team consists of Florence Cain, Nicola Short, and Fay Cort, all of whom work in the bloodstock industry in various roles.

“The girls came together last year and we thought about buying a foal together,” said Kavanagh. “We were beaten on a couple, but were successful buying him towards the end of the sale. We are all heavily involved in the industry and wanted to pool our money together and have a go at pinhooking. We have been extremely lucky with how well Havana Grey has done, we couldn't have expected that and it was a pretty risky year to go with a first-season sire. We were incredibly lucky he has done so well and this colt was liked as soon as we got here.”

Cort added, “I think it's going to be a big night. There will be some champagne drunk, but it is well earned.”

The colt (lot 900) is out of Speculating (Ire) (Xtension {Ire}), a half-sister to the hardy Group 3-winning stayer Danehill Kodiac (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}), and was bred by Josh Cameron.

“We will have a really nice supper and then think about reinvesting,” noted Kavanagh.
