Sea The Moon (Ger) will stand for an increased fee of £32,500 in 2024, Lanwades Stud announced on Wednesday.

Previously priced at £25,000, the sire of 31 stakes winners overall enjoyed a great year on the racecourse with his progeny, with seven stakes winners–all at group level–since New Year's Day. Leading the way are German Classic winners Fantastic Moon (Ger) and Muskoka (Ger), who took the G1 Deutsches Derby and G1 Preis der Diana, respectively. The 2014 German Derby winner covered 108 mares this season.

Joining him is Study Of Man (Ire) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) who has sired seven winners from 24 runners with his first juveniles. His best has been the G2 Beresford S. hero Deepone (GB). The 8-year-old was visited by 68 mares in 2023. His fee has remained unchanged at £12,500.

The third and final stallion at Kirsten Rausing's Newmarket stud is Breeders' Cup winner Bobby's Kitten at £5,000. The son of Kitten's Joy has sired four-time group winner Sandrine (GB) has his best progeny.

Sea The Moon (Ger), sire of recent G1 Caulfield Cup winner Durston (GB), will remain at £25,000 at Kirsten Rausing's Lanwades Stud in Newmarket for 2023.

The G1 Prix du Jockey Club winner Study Of Man (Ire) will have his first runners on the track next season and his fee has also remained static at £12,500. Bobby's Kitten, who surged to success in the GI Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint this time eight years ago when beating No Nay Never, has had his priced trimmed slightly to £6,000 (from £7,000).

Completing the roster is Sir Percy, sire of Group/Grade 1 winners in Australia and America. The former British champion juvenile and 2006 Derby winner is rising 20 and his fee for 2023 is listed as private.

ZAAKARA (GB) (Bobby's Kitten) represents a rare link-up between Kirsten Rausing and Sir Michael Stoute, but the Freemason Lodge handler was at one time responsible for this debutante's half-brother Zaaki (GB) (Leroidesanimaux {Brz}) before he went to Australia to win three Group 1s. Zaaki took until his 3-year-old campaign to get off the mark, and with seven of her nine rivals having the benefit of racecourse experience here a bold show from the homebred will be significant.

Kirsten Rausing experienced a season to remember last year, with triple German Group 1 winner Alpinista (GB) (Frankel {GB}), G3 Albany S. and G2 Duchess Of Cambridge S. victress Sandrine (GB) (Bobby's Kitten) and the dual Group 1-placed Albaflora (GB) (Muhaarar {GB}) the highlights of a handful of talented fillies and mares on the racecourse. All three of those train on in 2022, and Rausing has plenty to look forward to in her stallion ranks at Lanwades Stud, too; Sea The Moon (Ger) stands for £25,000, his highest fee yet, while Study Of Man's first yearlings are catching the eye. Bobby's Kitten has a couple of talented 3-year-old fillies to look forward to this year, while Sir Percy, the elder statesman of the stud barn at 19, has a pair of Classic contenders.

Rausing is known to support her stallions at Lanwades heavily, especially in their early years, and therefore Study Of Man in particular will get a huge boost from Rausing's broodmare band in his third season. The TDN's Kelsey Riley caught up with Rausing to discuss her mating plans, her stallions and the horses she is looking forward to on the racecourse this year.

TDN: Study Of Man's appeal as a stallion prospect is pretty obvious, he being a beautifully bred son of Deep Impact who won the G1 Prix du Jockey Club, but tell us in your own words why you wanted him for Lanwades.

KR: It's hard to find a better-bred horse anywhere. It's a lovely female family with Miesque as his second dam, and it's a family I've known a very long time since the 1970s through [Miesque's dam] Pasadoble. For me it was very important that Study Of Man is by Deep Impact; we have no other such horse in Britain and only Saxon Warrior (Jpn) in Ireland and as good as he was, Saxon Warrior is out of a Galileo (Ire) mare, which in some ways makes him a bit more difficult [to mate] in terms of the prevalence of Galileo in the mare population.

I've had a long-standing and very good working relationship with the Niarchos Family, especially Maria Niarchos. Her father, Mr. Stavros Niarchos, was a shareholder in Niniski in the early 1980s when I first came to Newmarket, and with that share in Niniski they bred champion Hernando (Fr), and eventually from him champion Sulamani (Ire). Study Of Man is the third horse from the Niarchos's we have stood at Lanwades.

It's absolutely marvellous to have a son of Deep Impact here because he will suit a whole lot of mares in Europe and internationally. The Deep Impact sons now, with the early loss of the sire, have increased scarcity value and any mare with Kingmambo in her pedigree, such as my own mares by Archipenko (GB), will enjoy a reinforced line with Miesque, which will be very interesting to say the least.

TDN: What are your impressions physically of Study Of Man's first progeny?

KR: In the early stages what we have are short yearlings and foals, and I'm thrilled with them. It's probably incidental, but he looks to be a pure-breeding bay, which is of academic interest, but people like it. I think they're very representative of him and also Deep Impact; they're medium-sized, pretty correct, whole colored bay or with a few markings, no chestnuts and no grays. They're very good movers and as far as we can tell with excellent temperaments, as he has himself.

TDN: Sea The Moon stands his eighth season for his highest fee yet, £25,000. He stood his first six seasons for £15,000 and was £22,500 last year, and is widely regarded as an excellent value sire. Tell us a bit about his trajectory.

KR: Sea The Moon has surprised a few people-external people. He stood for £15,000 for his first six years and he has since increased in fee in 2021 and again in 2022, but even so he compares very favourably to the main stallion population in Europe. People understand that we are not trying to over-egg the pudding by increasing his fee exponentially, but he's done well enough to merit his fee.

Like Study Of Man for Deep Impact, Sea The Moon is the only son of Sea The Stars (Ire) at stud in England, and one of actually quite few sons of Sea The Stars at stud in Europe to date. He was an exceptional racehorse himself and anyone who saw him winning the German Derby by 11 lengths would not likely forget it. I was already in negotiations with his owner/breeders Gestut Gorlsdorf at the time, and we eventually landed him here in Newmarket at Lanwades. I think quite a few people were surprised by this addition, but he was pretty well instantly booked full and has been ever since.

He has attracted, for obvious reasons, a whole lot of mares from Germany, but we also get a lot of mares from France and Ireland here, so it's an international book that he covers, which I think is attractive to breeders as well because it means you have the yearlings spaced out at different sales; you don't get 40 yearlings by the same stallion in one sale. He has been very commercially attractive in all the European markets. For him he had a relatively quiet year last year but he has started very well this year with Pretty Tiger (Ire), who won a listed race at Cagnes about a week ago, and he won a Group 2 last year. There are some interesting-looking Sea The Moons that are now 3-year-olds coming through, but it's early days. I'd like to think that my own Allada (GB), trained by Tim Donworth in France, might be good enough to figure in major contests, and no doubt there are plenty of others waiting in the wings.

TDN: Bobby's Kitten has a couple exciting 3-year-old fillies for this year, while Sir Percy, despite breeding smaller books now, has a pair of Classic hopefuls.

KR: I'm thrilled with the success of Bobby's Kitten having Sandrine, and [debut winner] Heat Of The Moment (GB) looks quite promising too.

Old Sir Percy has come up with two Classic candidates; not only [the listed-winning] Kawida (GB), but also the Lanwades-bred Lucellum (GB) in France. He's trained by Andre Fabre for Sheikh Mohammed and he is a French Derby aspirant. It's pretty good of old Sir Percy with nowadays narrow representation and small crops to come up with two such good 2-year-olds last year.

TDN: You've typically kept a few mares in Kentucky, too. Is that the case again this year?

KR: Sadly, for the first time in 35 years, I don't have a mare in Kentucky. I usually have between two and four mares in Kentucky, and I've always mated them with a view to the produce coming back to Europe. I found very, very good value in the old days in Kentucky; I could not afford the Nureyevs and the Blushing Grooms of this world, but in the layer beneath that the Irish Rivers, Rivermans, that sort of horse, were exceptionally good value for Europe and I used them and indeed also Kingmambo with the help of the Niarchos Family. Smart Strike I used many times. Stormy Atlantic was one of my favourites and he's done me very, very well. Lookin At Lucky and Nyquist were the younger horses I used, but unfortunately the two industries have become more and more divergent. I brought my Lookin at Luckys and my Nyquists back here and people said, 'who are they? We've never heard of them.'

I have one mare in foal to Hard Spun this year and she's come back here, but sadly I am fresh out of mares in Kentucky for the first time in 35 years, which is a regret to me, but I just cannot find stallions within my reach in Kentucky that are suitable for European racing.

I think what is interesting is that there were so many American purchases of yearlings in Europe last year. It's good that the American industry is replenishing with European pedigrees, because 30 or 40 years ago the traffic was all the other way. It would be infinitely attractive to international buyers if pedigrees were again more interactive.

TDN: You have some very exciting fillies and mares to look forward to on the racecourse this year. Tell us about how they're wintering and what the plans might be for the season.

KR: It's early days yet but they've all had their winter holidays and they're all back in training and so far so good. But if they aren't alright at this time of year, they never will be. At the moment all my geese are swans, but we need to see what happens later in the spring.

We might not even run Sandrine in a trial race, but if we do there are two obvious races over seven furlongs, the Nell Gwyn and the [Fred Darling]. I think Andrew Balding would be quite keen to run her first time out in the 1000 Guineas.

I wouldn't say Allada is an early-season mile type. At present we plan to run her in the Listed Prix Rose de Mai on Mar. 10, which I think is the first black-type race for 3-year-old fillies in Europe, and we'll see where we go from there.

Heat Of The Moment might well go in one of the Classic trials at Newbury or Newmarket, but we have an idea of the French 1000 Guineas for her.

It's going to be very difficult for Alpinista to maintain her success at Group 1 level. She's done her bit in Germany, so we have to think of Group 1s closer to home now. Most all of them, other than the Yorkshire Oaks, she would have to meet the colts, and there are some very good colts in training not least Godolphin's two Derby winners. But that's the idea. Albaflora, the idea with her is to try to win a group race of some description and hopefully a Group 1. She's shown she's well up to Group 1 standards. She needs to probably meet the colts and we'll possibly look at opportunities in France and Germany for her.

ALOE VERA (GB) (m, 6, Invincible Spirit {Ire}-Almiranta {GB}, by Galileo {Ire}), visits Study Of Man

Aloe Vera is a black-type winning full-sister to Alea Iacta and likewise visits Lanwades's resident G1 Prix du Jockey Club winner Study Of Man. Her first foal is a colt by Wootton Bassett (GB).

ALYSSA (GB) (m, 9, Sir Percy {GB}-Almiranta {GB}, by Galileo {Ire}), visits Study Of Man

Their half-sister Albaflora (GB) (Muhaarar {GB}), who was second last year in the G1 Yorkshire Oaks and G1 British Champions Fillies and Mares S., stays in training this year with Ralph Beckett.

Almiranta has had just one colt, which was unraced, from her first eight foals, and her first four fillies-Alea Iacta, Alyssa, Aloe Vera and Albaflora-are all stakes winners. Her 4-year-old is the Bobby's Kitten filly Alambrista (GB), and she has a 3-year-old Sea The Moon filly named Allemande (GB) and a yearling filly by Study Of Man. Both Almiranta and her listed-winning dam Alvarita (GB) (Selkirk) are due to foal to Study of Man, and their 2022 matings have not been confirmed.

The family diverged and some of them became 'ALs' and some of them became 'Zs' in the Aga Khan's stud book. But it will make a pretty pattern when you look at the hopefully resulting foal. Whether it will work only time will tell, but it will be an interesting one anyway.”

ALGARADE (GB) (m, 18, Green Desert-Alexandrine {Ire}, by Nashwan), visits Sea The Moon

Her winning daughter Kandahari (GB) (Archipenko) also visits Study Of Man, as does Arriviste (GB) (Sea The Moon {Ger}), a granddaughter of Kesara.

STARLIT SANDS (GB) (m, 17, Oasis Dream {GB}-Shimmering Sea {GB}, by Slip Anchor {GB}), visits Mehmas (Ire)

Starlit Sands is a descendant of Lanwades's foundation mare Sushila (Ire) (Petingo {GB}) and has produced six winners from her first seven foals including Sablonne (GB) (Dark Angel {Ire}), a winner at two last year. She visits Mehmas, the third time she has been mated with a Royal Applause-line sire, the others being Expert Eye and Acclamation.

“Starlit Sands hasn't really worked with Royal Applause yet, but I'm hoping I'll get it right at the third attempt,” Rausing said. “Maybe I'm pushing this too far by trying a third time, but you never know.”

Another winning daughter of Starlit Sands, Sands Of Time visits one of the standout members of last year's first-season sire crop in Ardad at Overbury Stud. “With Sandrine's three-parts sister Sands Of Time, I'm trying to stay with a sprinting outlook, so that's why she goes to Ardad, who has done exceptionally well with his first crop,” Rausing said.

Bred and raised by Olly Tait's Twin Hills Farm in New South Wales, the gelded son of Just A Girl (Aus) (Not A Single Doubt {Aus}) was the $4.40 (17-5) second favorite and landed better than midfield one out and one back in the slipstream of Stonestreet Farm's $8 chance Mura Mura (Aus) (Not A Single Doubt {Aus}). Pulled out into the clear with 400 metres to travel, Cecil Street Lad boxed on gamely, hit the front inside the final 50m and inched clear.

One of 30 listed Southern Hemisphere-bred foals, Cecil Street Lad fetched A$55,000 as a yearling at the Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale in March 2020, then realized a final bid of NZ$320,000 from Richard Laming Racing/John White Bloodstock at New Zealand Bloodstock's Ready To Run Sale last November (see below). He is one of two winners to race from his dam, who was acquired by Twin Hills for A$50,000 in foal to former 'TDN Rising Star' Rubick (Aus) (Encosta de Lago {Aus}) at the 2017 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale in 2017.

Bobby's Kitten, who flew home to win the GI Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint as a 3-year-old in 2014, is the sire of 25 winners to date, a number that also includes G2 Beresford S. runner-up Monaasib (GB).

One horse overshadowed all other news items of the past week as the bloodstock world came to terms with the death of Galileo (Ire) at the age of 23.

Fulsome tributes have been paid to him from across the globe with the overwhelming feeling being that we will never see his like again. It is worth bearing in mind, however, that many of us felt the same when his own extraordinary sire Sadler's Wells died 10 years ago. That colossus of the breeding world appeared in the third or fourth generation of four group winners at Newmarket's July meeting–Starman (GB), Snow Lantern (GB), Sir Ron Priestley (GB) and Sandrine (GB). That's just a snapshot of course, but it is indicative of how Sadler's Wells still shapes the modern-day Thoroughbred even a decade after his death, and often through that most effective of conduits, Galileo. The same will be true of Galileo in the decades to come.

As the suffixes of the above-named horses show, British breeders enjoyed a good week in Newmarket, with both Group 1 races falling to relatively small operations. David Ward's pride and joy Starman, a son of Dutch Art (GB), gave his breeder deserved compensation for having to miss Royal Ascot with both his intended Group 1 starters when the weather turned foul.

When interviewed by TDN in May, Ward outlined his hopes for a future stud career for the Ed Walker-trained Starman, whose sole defeat in six starts came in very soft ground on Champions Day last year. Swerving that soft ground again at the Royal Meeting was understandable, and Starman now has the Darley July Cup on his CV along with the G2 Duke Of York S.

Snow Lantern, who became the fifth Group 1 winner this year for Frankel (GB) when winning the Falmouth S., compensated for the narrow defeat in the same race as her Classic-winning mother Sky Lantern (Ire) (Red Clubs {Ire}) and become the first top-level winner for Ben and Martha Keswick's Rockliffe Stud. The Gloucestershire farm is home to their nine broodmares and Snow Lantern will presumably eventually return there herself, through encouragingly the Keswicks have expressed a wish for the loose-moving grey to race on at four.

The two Group 1 winners at the July meeting are also a feather in the cap of Ed Sackville, who is the bloodstock advisor for both Rockliffe Stud and David Ward, who keeps his mares at Whatton Manor Stud.

Bobby's Girl

The smartest of the juvenile fillies at this stage of the season is certainly Kirsten Rausing's homebred Sandrine (GB), who represents the fourth generation of Lanwades' Sushila (Ire) family. Just as the unbeaten Sandrine–who added the G2 Duchess of Cambridge S to her victory in the Group 3 win at Royal Ascot–is helping to raise the profile of her young sire Bobby's Kitten, so did Sushila's son Petoski (GB) for his sire Niniski.

The King George VI and Queen Elizabeth S. winner of 1985, Petoski was a member of the first crop of Niniski, the first stallion stood by Rausing after her purchase of Lanwades Stud in 1980. Petoski's victory in the G2 Vintage S., along with the success of that season's champion 2-year-old Kala Dancer (GB), helped Niniski–winner of the Irish St Leger and Prix Royal-Oak–on his way to becoming the champion first-season sire of 1984. He was later succeeded at Lanwades by his Classic-winning son Hernando (Fr).

It would be fair to say that Rausing wears her heart on her sleeve when it comes to her own stallions and, in a terrific season for runners bearing her famous white-and-green-hooped colours, it is a good bet that none has given her more satisfaction than Sandrine, who at this early stage is the ante-post favourite for the 1000 Guineas.

Her victory continued a real purple patch for Rausing, who the previous weekend had celebrated the success of Alpinista (GB) (Frankel {GB}) in the G2 Lancashire Oaks. Rausing's most recent Group 1 victory came with Madame Chiang (GB) (Archipenko) in the British Champions Fillies & Mares S., and it would be no surprise to see Sandrine or Alpinista add to that tally before long.

Andrew Balding, who is also enjoying a fine season, indicated that he would like to give Sandrine a brief spell before tackling the G1 Cheveley Park S., a race the trainer won last year with Jeff Smith's Alcohol Free (Ire) (No Nay Never).

The latter, who has gone on to win the G1 Coronation S. this season, had to settle for third in the Falmouth behind Snow Lantern, but Smith's colours were spotted in the winner's enclosure on the July Course aboard Frankella (GB), the second foal of his talented but tiny G1 Juddmonte International winner Arabian Queen (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}).

The maiden win for the juvenile filly was another example of Frankel working well with a Dubawi mare. The same cross has been season this season in Derby winner Adayar (Ire) and listed winner Mostahdaf (Ire), as well as Frankella's full-brother Spirit Mixer (GB). The 2019 G1 Jebel Hatta winner Dream Castle is also by Frankel and out of Dubawi's Group 2-winning daughter Sand Vixen (GB).

Brothers In Command

The draft of Shadwell fillies, mares and horses in training accounted for almost a sixth of the turnover at a very strong edition of the Tattersalls July Sale last week, and runners bred by the late Sheikh Hamdan also fared well on the track.

Vying for leading honours were the full-brothers Hukum (Ire) and Baaeed (GB), sons of Sea The Stars (Ire) and the listed winner Aghareed (Kingmambo) trained respectively by Owen Burrows and William Haggas.

Hukum, now four, was a star for Burrows last season, winning the King George V S. at Royal Ascot before landing the G3 Geoffrey Freer S. and finishing fifth in the St Leger. He has continued in similar vein this year with a listed win at Goodwood in May and now his second group win in York's John Smith's Silver Cup.

This came two days after his year-younger sibling Baaeed remained unbeaten when posting one of the most visually impressive wins of the meeting at Newmarket in the listed Sir Henry Cecil S. Baaeed looks capable of contesting bigger and better targets, and though his three wins have all come at a mile, he should be effective over further. His dam won the listed Prix de Liancourt over 10 furlongs for John Hammond, and she is out of the GI Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf winner Lahudood (GB) (Singspiel {Ire}), herself a great grand-daughter of Height Of Fashion.

Another mare in line for top broodmare honours this year is Susan Hearn's Reckoning (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}), though there were mixed fortunes for her two star offspring last week.

On the day that Sir Ron Priestley (GB) (Australia {GB}) posted his third stakes win of the season after returning from a 571-day absence, it was revealed that his half-brother, the impressive Ascot Gold Cup winner Subjectivist (GB) (Teofilo {Ire}), has suffered a leg injury and has been ruled out of running again this season, if not for good.

That regrettable news, particularly for Subjectivist's owner Dr Jim Walker, was partially softened by the latest hard-earned success of Paul Dean's Sir Ron Priestley, who ground out his second Group 2 win in the Princess of Wales's S. in utterly determined fashion over the strongly backed Al Aasy (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}). We may see him next in the King George unless he is supplemented to take his brother's place in the Goodwood Cup.

Ireland On Tour

Aidan O'Brien would certainly have preferred to see Bolshoi Ballet (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and Santa Barbara (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) notch a double at Epsom, but instead their Derby and Oaks wins came in the New York version, with Ryan Moore in the saddle for both Grade 1 victories at Belmont Park. Santa Barbara's win is particularly noteworthy as she becomes the third consecutive Group/Grade 1 winner for her dam Senta's Dream (GB) (Danehill) after Iridessa (Ire) (Ruler Of The World {Ire}) and Order Of Australia (Ire) (Australia {GB}).

The overseas runners from Ireland were rampant at the weekend with Ken Condon taking another Group 1 at Deauville in the Prix Jean Prat with Laws Of Indices (Ire) (Power {GB}), who finished just a head in front of the Joseph O'Brien-trained Thunder Moon (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}). The latter, like Santa Barbara, was bred by Aidan and Annemarie O'Brien's Whisperview Trading.

They were backed up by the victory of the Jessica Harrington runner Loch Lein (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), a homebred for Denis and Joan Brosnan of Crooom House Stud, in the listed Prix Amandine.

Laws Of Indices may well go down as the bargain buy of the year, though he has a rival in that department in Helvic Dream (Ire), who less than two months ago became the first Group 1 winner for their sire Power when defeating Broome (Ire) (Australia {GB}) in the Tattersalls Gold Cup. Helvic Dream was a €12,000 Tattersalls Ireland September yearling bought by Peter Nolan, while Laws Of Indices was bought for €8,000 by Dermot Farrington at the Goffs Autumn Yearling Sale.

Laws Of Indices had already proved himself a talented individual last season when beating Lucky Vega (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) to win the G2 Railway S. He is a fine advertisement for the ability of his trainer who also sent out last year's G2 Lowther S. winner Miss Amulet (Ire) (Sir Prancealot {Ire}). The filly was another value buy as a £7,500 Ascot yearling after selling for just €1,000 as a foal.

They followed the 2019 G1 Prix Jacques le Marois victory of the Condon-trained Romanised (Ire) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}), who has just completed his first season at Haras de Bouquetot.

It was also a good week for Power's sire Oasis Dream (GB), who was represented by the winner of the G2 Superlative S., Native Trail (GB). The colt had been a decent pinhook by Norman Williamson, who bought him for 67,000gns through Mags O'Toole at Book 1 and resold him at Tattersalls in April at the Craven Breeze-up sale for 210,000gns to Godolphin. Native Trail, who is unbeaten in two starts, became the fourth winner of the Superlative S. For Charlie Appleby in the last six years following Boynton (GB), Quorto (Ire) and Master Of The Seas (Ire).

Confirming the form of Royal Ascot's G3 Albany S., Kirsten Rausing's Sandrine (GB) (Bobby's Kitten) was in a dominant mood as she brought up a notable pattern-race double in Friday's G2 Duchess of Cambridge S. at Newmarket.

Held up behind a duo racing far side throughout the early stages, the 11-5 favourite moved to the lead approaching the furlong pole and readily drew away to beat Desert Dreamer (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) by 1 3/4 lengths, with the Albany runner-up Hello You (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) half a length back in third.

“She had to prove herself on quick ground and she has done that today,” rider David Probert said. “She got into a great rhythm throughout the race and when the pace quickened before the two, she stepped up another gear under pressure on the rising ground. She's got a great temperament and took a good bit of pulling up there, so I don't see why she couldn't step up in trip.”

Now a winner on Kempton's Polytrack May 19, on deep ground in the June 18 Albany and fast going here, the homebred has inherited a vast amount of versatility.

Owner-breeder Kirsten Rausing said, “She's independent of going, like her sire was and he was a turf performer in America who also won on heavy ground at Cork on his only European appearance. The family goes back about six generations since I bought her ancestress as a yearling and we also stand the sire, whose first group winner she is. I'm delighted for his sake and for that of my team at home and, of course, Andrew Balding, David Probert and the entire team at Kingsclere who have done so well. I think she did it very convincingly. She had it won a while before she passed the line. I think she has proved at present she is the best 2-year-old filly in England and Ireland.”

Sandrine is the second foal out of Seychelloise (GB) (Pivotal {GB}), whose first is the useful 3-year-old colt Sea the Shells (GB) (Sea the Stars {Ire}), fourth in the Listed Fairway S. in May. She is a daughter of the G3 Prix d'Arenberg winner Starlit Sands (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}), who was also runner-up in the G2 Queen Mary S., while the third dam is the G3 Silken Glider S. third Shimmering Sea (GB) (Slip Anchor {GB}). A half to the G1 King George VI & Queen Elizabeth S.-winning sire Petoski (GB) (Niniski), she produced the Scandinavian champion Sea Dane (GB) (Danehill) and the dams of the G3 Prix des Reservoirs winner Songerie (GB) (Hernando {Fr}), the G1 Oaks d'Italia third Souvenance (GB) (Hernando {Fr}) and the G3 Ridgewood Pearl S. winner Chigun (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}). Seychelloise's yearling colt is by Roaring Lion, while she also has a colt foal by Study of Man (Ire).

Hailing from the Andrew Balding stable already successful at the Royal meeting with the 2-year-old Berkshire Shadow (GB) (Dark Angel {Ire}), Kirsten Rausing's Kempton winner Sandrine (GB) (Bobby's Kitten) doubled Kingsclere's tally as she mastered both the heavy ground and 14 rivals in Friday's G3 Albany S. Showing stamina as well as speed on her debut over this six-furlong trip on the Polytrack May 19, the homebred raced wide initially behind the leading group. Sent forward by David Probert passing halfway, the 16-1 shot was briefly stopped in her run approaching two out but was unperturbed waiting for the command. In the clear soon after, she cut down Hello You (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) inside the final 150 yards and powered through the deep ground to beat that rival by 1 1/2 lengths in the race that for most of the morning looked unlikely to take place. Oscula (Ire) (Galileo Gold {GB}), who had been third behind the winner at Kempton, was again in that spot half a length away having broken away from the main group to come up the stand's side. “I don't think many will go on these kind of wet conditions, but she is super-fit and very hardy,” Probert said. “She relaxes really well and gets into a good rhythm–she is not very green for a very inexperienced filly and when I did ask her she really was relentless and galloped really nicely to the line. It's very boggy, but we had such a deluge it is quite loose and they are galloping through it so it's not so energy-sapping as it would be if it had dried.”

Kirsten Rausing said, “I bought this filly's fifth or sixth dam as a yearling at Goffs in 1976 and the family has been with me ever since. Everything on her catalogue page from top to bottom, we have bred at Lanwades Stud. All my animals are homebred, so it gives me tremendous pleasure to keep the continuity. I also tend to support my own stallions and this filly is Bobby's Kitten's first stakes winner, first group winner, so we are thrilled with that.”

Andrew Balding added, “I thought the meeting was sure to be off. We were only coming here to have lunch, but I'm so pleased for Kirsten and she deserves a winner like this. Sandrine was impressive when winning on debut. It was a low-class race at Kempton, but the form worked out well and she worked nicely last week. We felt we were entitled to run. We were slightly worried about the ground, as there were mixed messages on the pedigree. However, Bobby's Kitten won well on soft ground on his only start in Ireland. There was no fluke about the win and she was very impressive. I am pleased for David Probert, who just gave her the most beautiful ride and really deserves it.”

Sandrine is the second foal out of the useful Sir Mark Prescott-trained multiple-winning dam Seychelloise (GB) (Pivotal {GB}), whose first is the useful 3-year-old colt Sea the Shells (GB) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) who was fourth in the Listed Fairway S. last month. She is a daughter of the G3 Prix d'Arenberg winner Starlit Sands (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}), who was also runner-up in the 2007 G2 Queen Mary S. here. The third dam is the G3 Silken Glider S. third Shimmering Sea (GB) (Slip Anchor {GB}), a half to the G1 King George VI & Queen Elizabeth S.-winning sire Petoski (GB) (Niniski) who produced the Scandinavian champion Sea Dane (GB) (Danehill). She was also responsible for the dams of the G3 Prix des Reservoirs winner Songerie (GB) (Hernando {Fr}), the G1 Oaks d'Italia third Souvenance (GB) (Hernando {Fr}) and the G3 Ridgewood Pearl S. winner Chigun (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}). Seychelloise's yearling colt is by Roaring Lion, while she also has a colt foal by Study of Man (Ire).
