A pair of fillies shared the fastest quarter-mile work of the penultimate day of the under-tack show for the Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's June Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training Friday in Ocala, while eight juveniles shared the fastest furlong time of :10 flat during a day pestered by persistent headwinds.

Consignor Omar Ramirez sent out a filly by Street Boss (hip 817) to share Friday's bullet time of :20 3/5 while working early in the day's first set.

“I was waiting for her all week,” Ramirez admitted. “I knew she was going to throw a big work. I knew whatever the bullet was going to be, she'd be close to it. She is a super nice filly.”

The juvenile, who was purchased for $75,000 at last year's Fasig-Tipton October sale, RNA'd for $145,000 following a :10 flat work at the OBS Spring Sale in April.

“She worked in :10 flat in April and she galloped out huge,” Ramirez said. “I said I would buy her back for $150,000. I didn't want to give her away because she is a nice filly. That's why I sent her a quarter this time, so people know she's a runner.”

The chestnut filly is out of Desperate Chick (Tribal Rule), a half-sister to graded winner Native Bombshell (War Front). Native Bombshell is the dam of stakes-winner Lady War Machine (Street Boss).

A filly by Bucchero (hip 785) from Sergio Centeno's Blue River Bloodstock consignment, matched that :20 3/5 time some 3 1/2 hours later. The chestnut filly is out of Corfu Lady (Corfu) and from the family of multiple graded winner Halo's Image. She was bred by Saul Rosas.

Ramirez also sent out a pair of Friday's furlong bullet workers: a colt by St Patrick's Day (hip 878, video) and a colt by Yoshida (Jpn) (hip 900, video).

The St Patrick's Day colt is another returnee from the April sale where he RNA'd for $35,000 after working in :10 flat.

“He's such a pretty horse,” Ramirez said of the bay colt, who is out of a half-sister to graded stakes winner Jenny's So Great (Greatness). “I don't know why we didn't get him sold in April, but I had to put him in to work late in the day at that sale. I knew he would work well today because he's really fast.”

From the first crop of Yoshida, hip 900 put in his bullet furlong work late in Friday's session.

“I'll be really honest with you, that was a shock with that colt,” Ramirez said. “I was not expecting :10 flat from him.”

Ramirez acquired the colt for $10,000 at the OBS October sale last fall and the June sale will be his first trip through the ring this year.

“I liked the colt, he was pretty and had all the right parts,” Ramirez said of his early impressions of the youngster. “I brought him to this sale to give him more of a chance to grow up.”

Also sharing Friday's fastest furlong time of :10 flat: a filly by Twirling Candy (hip 733, video) consigned by Grassroots Training & Sales; a colt by Solomini (hip 745, video) consigned by Britton Peak; a colt by The Big Beast (hip 787, video) consigned by AVP Training and Sales; a colt by Klimt (hip 806, video) consigned by Nice and Easy Thoroughbreds; a filly by Redesdale (hip 853, video) consigned by Harris Training Center; and a colt by Arrogate (hip 868, video) consigned by Hartley/DeRenzo Thoroughbreds.

“The track was definitely slow today,” Ramirez said. “I have a really nice Vino Rosso filly (hip 783) who worked in :21 2/5 and I think she's a little faster than that. There was a headwind today and I think that affected the times.”

The under-tack show concludes with a final session beginning at 7:30 a.m. Saturday. The June sale will be held next Tuesday through Thursday with bidding commencing each day at 10 a.m.

Torie and Jimbo Gladwell's Top Line Sales consignment was responsible for both of the co-fastest furlong workers–both consigned on behalf of owner Marc Tacher–and it shared the co-fastest quarter-mile breeze during Tuesday's third session of the under-tack show for next week's Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's Spring Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training in Central Florida.

A filly from the first crop of champion Accelerate (hip 461) shared Tuesday's fastest furlong time of :9 4/5. The bay is out of Full Moon Frolic (Vindication), who is a daughter of graded placed Frolicing (Royal Academy) and from the family of graded placed Mokat and Frolic's Dream. Isidro Centeno signed for the ticket at $35,000 at last year's OBS October sale.

A daughter of first-crop sire Army Mule (hip 441) also shared the :9 4/5 bullet time. She is out of the unraced First Fed Biz (Fed Biz), a half-sister to graded placed Bourbon Cowboy (Cowboy Cal). Elusive Thoroughbreds acquired the filly for $60,000 at last year's OBS October sale.

“Both of them are speedy fillies who do everything right,” Torie Gladwell said of the bullet duo. “They are both smart, easy-training fillies. They are not the real hot-blooded type. You ask them to do it and they show up and do what you ask them to do. They are very similar actually.”

Top Line sent out a colt from the first crop of GI Met Mile winner Mor Spirit (hip 410) to work the day's co-fastest quarter-mile of :20 3/5. The juvenile is out of the unraced English Chocolate (Midnight Lute), a daughter of stakes winner Unbridled Danz (Unbridled's Song). Alex Silva signed the ticket on the youngster at $50,000 at the Fasig-Tipton October sale.

“He's a really big, strong colt and he doesn't look like he should go :9 4/5,” Gladwell said. “He's not a little Quarter Horse type, he's a big, two-turn type colt with plenty of speed and plenty of fitness. And that's why we decided to go a quarter with him. Omar Ramirez owns him and he trained him, so he gets all the credit for getting him ready.”

Of the bullet time, Gladwell added, “He prepped sharp. We were thinking :21 flat or :20 4/5 at the best, so the :20 3/5 was a little bit of a surprise.”

Equaling the :20 3/5 quarter-mile time was hip 384, a son of GI Belmont S. winner Tapwrit. Consigned by Blue River Bloodstock, the gray colt is out of Dulce Arabe (Chi) (Speightstown). Bred by International Equities Holding–which also bred Monday's bullet quarter-mile worker–he was purchased by Katuska Arenas for $16,000 at last year's Keeneland September sale.

All of Tuesday's bullet workers are by first-crop sires.

“We typically gravitate to first-crop stallions, just because there is that unknown,” Gladwell said. “For us and for the buyers. And they seem to sell really well as 2-year-olds.”

Tuesday's bullet workers continued a week of strong results for Top Line Sales, which was represented by three :9 4/5 breezes during Monday's second session of the under-tack show: hip 206, a colt by Uncle Mo; hip 258, a son of Nyquist; and hip 301, a colt by City of Light.

“All three of those horses are serious colts,” Gladwell said. “We thought that all three could go in :9 4/5, so if they hadn't gone that fast, we probably would have been a little disappointed. They all prepped good, they are training good and they are all sound, good-trying horses.”

Through three of seven sessions of the under-tack show, Gladwell said conditions had remained largely consistent.

“That's a question for all the people up there clocking all the gallop outs,” she said when asked to compare conditions from day to day. “I heard a couple of people say that today the gallop outs were a little bit slower than yesterday, so I think the track was maybe a little faster yesterday than today, but not by much. I think the gallop outs were a little telling today, but the eighths seemed to be pretty consistent.”

The under-tack show continues through Saturday with sessions beginning each day at 8 a.m. The Spring sale will be held next Tuesday through Friday with bidding commencing daily at 10:30 a.m.

The under-tack show for next week’s Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s July 2-Year-Olds and Horses of Racing Age Sale reached its midway point Wednesday in Central Florida and a colt by Half Ours (hip 383) turned in the week’s fastest quarter-mile so far, covering the distance in :20 1/5. The bay colt is consigned by Sergio Centeno’s Blue River Bloodstock and is out of All About Ju Ju (Into Mischief).

“He prepped in :21 1/5, so I expected he could go :21 flat to :20 4/5, but he worked really, really good,” said Centeno.

Centeno’s brother Jaime purchased the colt for $8,000 at last year’s OBS October Sale.

“We started training him a little later because we didn’t expect to take him to an April Sale,” Sergio Centeno said. “So we were breaking him a little late to go for the June sale, but then the coronavirus moved all of the sales. But he always showed he had the talent.”

Centeno is also excited about the prospects of a filly he will send out to work Friday at OBS, a daughter of Palace who is catalogued as hip 839.

“She prepped the same day as the colt and same :21 1/5, so I expect big things from her,” he said.

A colt by Shackleford (hip 492) turned in the week’s second fastest quarter-mile breeze so far when covering the distance in :20 2/5 Wednesday. The gray colt is consigned by Fabian Garcia’s Fabian Sales.

“I was thinking of :21 flat, but he got more than that,” Garcia said with a chuckle. “The track has been pretty slow and it’s been raining all week. This morning it was kind of slow, but he just did what he had to do. Since the first time that I breezed him, he showed that he could do it.”

Hip 492 is out of the unraced Capri Song (More Than Ready) and his third dam is multiple Grade I winner Dispute (Danzig). Garcia purchased the youngster for $3,500 at last year’s Keeneland September sale.

“I liked the mare and I liked the pedigree going together,” Garcia said of the colt’s appeal last fall. “I had a Shackleford last year and that was what I liked about the horse–he has the same body as the other one I had last year and I did pretty well with the other one, too. I was just hoping to do better than last year and I think I have.”

Garcia has been consigning under the Fabian Sales banner for the past four years, but is no stranger to the business.

“I’ve been in the horse business for a long time,” he said. “I’ve been an owner for almost 20 years. But I always put it under someone else’s name. I was working with Nick Zito for a long time. I was a groom for him. And now I work for Eddie Woods. It all came together and here we are.”

During his first three years consigning as Fabian Sales, Garcia was selling his own horses, but his seven-horse consignment at the July sale includes juveniles he will offer on behalf of clients.

In addition to hip 492, Garcia has sent out two fillies to work matching furlong times: hip 227, a daughter of You Luckie Mann went in :10 2/5; and hip 404, a filly by Bodemeister, also worked in :10 2/5.

Asked if Eddie Woods had given him any advice heading into the sale, Garcia said, “He tells me some good things that I could do to be better every year. I listen to my boss every time. I try to do good like he does. I want to bring in more clients and pinhook more on my own and have people trust me. And to have people know I can do it.”

An additional five fillies turned in the week’s fastest furlong time of :10 flat Wednesday.

A filly from the first crop of sprint champion Runhappy (hip 428) worked in :10 flat for Hartley/DeRenzo Thoroughbreds LLC. The bay is out of Bamboo Dream (Finality) and was purchased by Randy Hartley and Dean DeRenzo for $70,000 at last year’s Fasig-Tipton October Yearling Sale.

Hip 473, a daughter of Palace Malice, worked in :10 flat for Hoppel’s Horse and Cattle Co. Out of Breech Inlet (Holy Bull), the bay is a half-sister to stakes placed Merveilleux (Paynter). Pat Hoppel purchased the youngster for $80,000 at last year’s Keeneland September sale.

A daughter of Midshipman (hip 502), consigned by Vargas Sales, also worked in :10 flat. Out of Cat Ten (Greatness), a full-sister to graded placed Flashstorm, she was purchased for $5,000 by Sky High Stables at last year’s Keeneland September sale.

Gene Recio sent out a filly by Maclean’s Music (hip 525) to share the :10 flat bullet time. The dark bay is a daughter of Chokonni (Arch) and from the family of Grade I winner Aldiza. Bred by John Liviakis, the juvenile RNA’d for $37,000 at the 2018 Keeneland November sale and for $14,000 at last year’s Keeneland September sale.

A filly by Not This Time (hip 510) was the last of the day’s :10 flat workers when hitting the track late in Wednesday’s third and final set. Consigned by Oscar Brown Stables, the dark bay is out of the unraced Champagne Sparkle (Street Boss) who is a full-sister to Grade I winner Danza and a half to Grade I winner Majestic Harbor (Rockport Harbor). The April foal was purchased by Lewis Lakin for $95,000 at last year’s Keeneland September sale.

Sixteen horses have now turned in co-fastest :10 flat works this week at OBS.

The under-tack show continues through Saturday with sessions beginning each day at 7:30 a.m. The July sale will be held next Tuesday through Thursday with bidding commencing at 10 a.m.
