This year's stakes schedule is very similar to last year. Out of 15, nine are graded. Over $2 million in purse money will be up for grabs over the course of the four-week meet, including the GI Hollywood Derby on Saturday, Dec. 2 and the GI Matriarch S. on Sunday, Dec. 3.

“Where we're laid out on the calendar is perfect,” Del Mar racing secretary David Jerkens said. “Mark Casse is sending a small string. Graham Motion. Wesley Ward has a few horses here. Obviously, the Breeders' Cup has just wrapped up but based on past history we've received quite a bit of an influx from the Chad Brown and Christophe Clement barns back east.”

Total handle for the four-week, 13-day fall session was $171.58 million. The fall meet average daily handle was a record $13.19 million, which was 1.0% higher than the record average daily handle posted last year.

The Breeders' Cup–held at Del Mar Nov. 5 and 6–had a common-pool handle of $183,260,127, a two-day record for the championship event. When Del Mar last hosted the Breeders' Cup in 2017, it posted a then-record handle of $166,077,486. The new mark is 10.4% higher than that.

Del Mar's wagering in 2021 totaled $943.49 million, 21.3% higher than the previous record of $778.97 million set in 2017 the last time Del Mar hosted the Breeders' Cup.

“I am exceptionally proud of our team and seeing all their hard work come to such wonderful fruition over the course of the two seasons,” said Del Mar Thoroughbred Club's CEO, Joe Harper. “We put on a helluva Breeders' Cup show once again; we were at our best for the best. And we're safe, very safe. That's just the best of all.”

The track's Ship & Win program featured 67 new runners who came to town this fall under the program with six of them making a second start during the Bing Crosby Season. In total, 1,885 “S&W” runners have come to California since the program was put in place 11 years ago.

The track's fall riding leading rider was Juan Hernandez with 17 firsts from 79 mounts during the 15-day (counting the Breeders' Cup) session. It is his first riding title at Del Mar. Top trainer honors went to Phil D'Amato, who registered 15 firsts from 52 starters. It is his first fall riding championship, but his third at the track overall.

Racing will return to Del Mar July 22 for the track's 83rd summer season.

She had reasons other than it's sunny Southern California rather than New York City and “Where the Turf Meets the Surf” instead of Aqueduct where … well, there's also thoroughbred racing.

“I came out here for Cigar's race (1996 Pacific Classic) where he lost to Dare And Go, so that was sad,” Livingston recounted recently. “Then I came out for the Breeders' Cup (in 2017), and just the Breeders' Cup.

“So I wanted to come out and stay for a while this time. I know it's just the Bing Crosby meet, but it's still pretty spectacular. I can't get enough of this place.”

Racing fans have likely been aware of Livingston's work since 1971 when she first started aiming her camera and indulging a passion for horses, the people around them, horse racing, and the history and daily happenings regarding them all.

The general public got introduced to Livingston during Kentucky Derby week in 2017 when CBS sent a crew and correspondent Don Dahler for a story that wound up on the network's “Evening News” and other shows. Livingston has vision problems that she overcomes with the aid of special lenses in her cameras, enabling her to capture images that can fascinate and delight.

“Every day I wake up happy to come here (racetrack), every day I come home happy that I was here,” Livingston told Dahler at the end of piece. “Every night I go to sleep and I can't wait to get back here.”

The photos she takes during her Del Mar stay are destined for places on internet sites that bear her name or perhaps another book displaying her talents.

Following its Saturday/Sunday opening weekend, the track will settle into a Friday-through-Sunday format for the following three weeks, then close things out with a four-day finish starting on Thanksgiving Thursday, Nov. 26.

The track will continue its emphasis on the safety of its horses and riders. Its extensive program of enhanced procedures and protocols include additional veterinarian oversight, a panel of experts that scrutinizes all horse entries and overriding analyses of medications and workout routines for its horses. As was the case during recently concluded summer meet, the track will operate its fall season under stringent COVID-19 protocols, including daily health screenings for all employees and essential personnel. It will have medical professionals onsite and require both the wearing of face masks and social distancing. In accordance with state and local guidelines, racing again will be conducted without fans in attendance.

“Safety is on our menu from start to finish,” said Del Mar Thoroughbred Club’s CEO Joe Harper. “If you start with safety, everything else just flows. And not only will we again have safe racing, but we’ll once more have the best racing in the country throughout our stand, something racing fans are going to love to watch.”

First post throughout the season will be 12:30 p.m. on all days with the exception of Thanksgiving Day, which gets an 11 a.m. start. Live cards will also be presented on both Breeders’ Cup days at Keeneland Nov. 6 and Nov. 7.

Del Mar has added a pair of California-bred sprint stakes for juveniles that were not on its agenda the past two seasons.

Nine of the 16 fall stakes are graded; nine of the 16 stakes will be run on turf; seven of the stakes–all of them on grass–will be presented over the track’s extended closing weekend which begins Thanksgiving Day, and continues through closing day Nov. 29.

“Given the current climate of things, we are very pleased to keep our fall stakes purse levels intact,” said David Jerkens, Del Mar’s racing secretary. “The response to our summer racing program was exceptional. We are expecting similar results this fall. I am especially excited about our Thanksgiving stakes weekend, which has taken on national prominence.”

The track’s two premier stakes will be presented on its closing weekend–the GI Hollywood Derby for 3-year-olds at nine furlongs Nov. 28 and GI Matriarch S. for fillies and mares at a mile Nov. 29. Additionally, closing weekend also will feature the GII Hollywood Turf Cup Nov. 27 and GII Seabiscuit H. Nov. 28.

Racing will be conducted Saturday and Sunday for opening weekend, then Friday, Saturday and Sunday for the next three weeks, finishing finally with a four-day week around Thanksgiving. First post daily will be 12:30 p.m. on all racing days with the exception of the track’s special holiday card on Thanksgiving when racing begins at 11 a.m.

There will be six stakes offered for juveniles, including a trio of Grade IIIs–Bob Hope S. Nov. 15; Jimmy Durante S. Nov. 28, and Cecil B. DeMille S. Nov. 29.
