The California Retirement Management Account's summer fundraiser CARMAthon raised over $300,000 at Del Mar Saturday. The non-profit, which is dedicated to Thoroughbred aftercare in the state, joined with TVG, whose on-air commentators promoted the event throughout the day and played videos showcasing Thoroughbreds who retired through CARMA's Placement Program in their second careers as sport horses.

The fundraiser was on pace to meet its goal of $150,000 when an anonymous donor put forth a dollar-for-dollar matching fund up to $150,000. This was met by the end of the day, bringing the total raised to over $300,000, making it CARMA's most successful event.

“Today has been about the horses, about the racing industry coming together, about supporting our equine athletes, and about all the non-profit organizations dedicated to Thoroughbred Aftercare,” said Billy Koch, CARMA's President and Little Red Feather Racing Founder and Managing Partner. “I know I speak for the entire CARMA Board of Directors when I say we are overwhelmed by the generosity and support the racing industry has shown today. Aftercare is not an afterthought–and that was proven today.”

CARMA Executive Director Lucinda Lovitt added, “We can't thank everyone enough for all their support today. CARMA only has one major fundraiser a year, so having the racing community come together in such a big way means so much. And of course, all our success was magnified by the generosity of an anonymous donor whose matching fund of $150,000 knocked this year's goal out of the park. We cannot even begin to express how big of an impact these additional funds will have on our programs and for our aftercare charity partners this year.”

HALLANDALE BEACH, FL – The under-tack show for the Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream Sale of Selected 2-Year-Olds in Training was held under picture-perfect blue skies and temperatures in the 70s Monday in South Florida.

“I thought the under-tack show went exceptionally well,” Fasig-Tipton President Boyd Browning said at the conclusion of Monday's fourth and final set of works. “The conditions were very consistent for all the horses, from start to finish. There were some very impressive works, both visually and time-wise. It looked like the horses were moving very well over the racetrack.”

A colt by Uncle Mo (hip 96) turned in the day's fastest furlong work–and fastest ever in the seven-year history of the Gulfstream auction–when covering the distance in :9 3/5. The juvenile is out of Brusquer (Elusive Quality), who is a half-sister to Tapit, and is consigned by Ciaran Dunne's Wavertree Stables.

“We knew the horse was going to go really well,” Dunne said of the work. “All of the stars had to align for him to go really good and hit the wire just right. But if ever a horse had a chance to do it, it was probably going to be him. He is a big, beautiful horse and he's advertised himself as a pretty special horse all year.”

Hip 96 was bred by Barouche Stud and was purchased privately by Dunne after he RNA'd for $385,000 at last year's Keeneland September sale.

“We liked everything about him,” Dunne said of the yearling's appeal. “He is a stunning horse physically. He is not the most effusive of walkers, which is why we own him. With his pedigree and the way he stands up, if he was a big, long-walking horse, we wouldn't have gotten near him. When people buy in September, they have 30 seconds to make their minds up and they are looking for reasons for no. Whereas, in Book 1, we look for reasons for yes. We make an excuse here or there and he had enough pluses to outweigh the one negative, which was his walk. He still can't walk. But luckily enough, today they didn't time him walking up there.”

Wavertree had a powerful showing at last year's Gulfstream sale, selling two of the three million-dollar offerings, including the $2.6-million topper.

“We had a really good sale last year,” Dunne said with a smile. “I think it's a really good group this year. When you have a really large number like we have, there are always going to be disappointments on breeze day. But overall, we were happy. There were one or two we thought might have gone a jump quicker than they did, but they are big, two-turn horses who are bred to go long. That's what people are coming here for. They want big, two-turn horses. The Uncle Mo is that kind of horse and he still went that fast, but for the most part, two-turn horses don't have that kind of speed. I think here they see through that a little bit. So for me, that's the beauty of being here.”

A pair of juveniles shared Monday's second-fastest furlong time of :9 4/5. First to hit that mark was a colt by City of Light (hip 100) consigned by Top Line Sales (video) and the time was matched just minutes later by a colt by Nyquist (hip 62) from the Classic Bloodstock consignment (video).

Eight juveniles worked a quarter-mile Monday, with all but one of them coming from Tom McCrocklin's consignment. A filly from the first crop of Bolt d'Oro (hip 48) was just the second to work Monday and earned the day's bullet when working in :20 2/5. The juvenile, out of Rich Love (Not For Love), is consigned by McCrocklin on behalf of Solana Beach Sales.

McCrocklin purchased the filly on behalf of Solana Beach for $85,000 at last year's Keeneland September sale, but she was a horse that the operation was well aware of beforehand. The pinhooking division of Little Red Feather purchased Rich Love, with the Bolt d'Oro filly in utero, for $70,000 at the 2020 Keeneland January sale and, as part of a foal share agreement, sold her as a weanling for $80,000 at that year's Keeneland November sale.

“We did a broodmare pinhooking partnership,” explained Solana Beach's Billy Koch. “And [Rich Love] was part of that group. It was funny because I remember being at the yearling sale and Tom said, 'I really like this filly.' I said, 'I think that's the filly we sold.' And he said, 'Yeah. And we're going to buy her back.'”

Koch continued, “Tom really gets all the credit and he's been high on her right from the start.”

Of the filly's bullet breeze, which was another fastest-ever time for the Gulfstream sale, Koch added, “Truthfully, Tom has been so high on her that we had such high expectations and she even exceeded those. He has been saying that she is a very special filly. Every time she breezes, we get a text, 'This is real serious.' So expectations were high, so it was not a surprise, but it was a surprise just how awesome it was.”

Bolt d'Oro got off to a huge start at the 2-year-old sales with the OBS March sale two weeks ago where his offerings were led by a $900,000 colt.

“Bolt d'Oro was really popular and sold well,” Koch said. “His horses are good–he's stamping them and they are fast and athletic and strong. They have all the attributes you want in a good racehorse. This filly, you can look at her now and it doesn't even look like she did anything. And she has a great mind.”

Hip 48 will be the only Gulfstream offering from Solana Beach, but Koch may be active on the other side of the leger.

“We came down here to sell and maybe do a little buying,” he said. “We are going to enjoy the next couple of days and hopefully the right people will be around and she'll get it done. It's all her and Tom. We're just along for the ride.”

The juvenile sales season opened with a competitive market at the OBS March sale and expectations are for those results to continue at Gulfstream Wednesday.

“I think it will be a very strong market,” Browning said. “But every 2-year-old sale that I've ever attended has been selective where you have to get through several of the hurdles. They have to have a solid enough work in terms of time, they have to have the video and they have to get through the X-ray process. Overall, I think there is a lot of interest and a lot of enthusiasm for quality horses. There was very good attendance here today amongst the buying bench. So I think it will be a very, very solid and competitive sale, particularly for what are perceived to be the quality offerings. For those horses that miss, it will be tough for them to bring the prices that the consignors are going to be happy with to let them go at this point because they still have options.”

Dunne agreed demand would be high for the right offerings.

“I think that on a dirt surface that they have some history on, I think the buyers can sort out the wheat from the chaff,” Dunne said. “And I think if you have a good horse here, you're going to be rewarded. And if you just miss, it will be no different than any other year. You'll miss by a lot.”

From a catalogue of just 103 juveniles, 32 horses were already withdrawn from the auction Monday evening. Several high-profile consignors are missing from the slimmed down catalogue, leading Dunne to quip, “I guess they just didn't have anything good enough to come here with.”

Asked about the long-term viability of the Gulfstream sale, Browning said, “Right now our focus is to do the very best job we can for the men and women who are here with horses in the sale. Our goal is to have the best 2-year-old sale we've ever had on Wednesday. And we are going to do everything in our power to make that happen. That's our focus. You adjust and evaluate your sales plans every year, but right now our focus is on the exceptional horses that we have on the sales grounds here.”

After a day of showing Tuesday, the Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream sale will be held Wednesday in the track's paddock with bidding scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.

Billy Koch was unanimously elected board president of the California Retirement Management Account (CARMA), a non-profit organization that provides funding for retirement of California-raced Thoroughbred horses. Koch is founder and managing partner of Little Red Feather Racing.

“Retirement of our horses is an absolute priority,” said Koch. “These amazing animals are the sole reason any of us are in this game and they deserve every ounce of our support once their racing careers are over. This responsibility falls on owners, trainers, jockeys, players, ADW providers, and our racetrack partners. Organizations like CARMA and our very own LRF Cares continue to step up, but we need more assistance from all areas of the horse racing world to make sure our horses are continually cared for. I am honored to serve as the next President of CARMA and look forward to working with the dedicated and passionate industry professionals that make up CARMA's board of directors as we continue to fulfill our mission of funding racehorse retirement.”

In his previous role as Treasurer, Koch was instrumental in developing and implementing the CARMAthon virtual fundraisers in 2020 and 2021. These events raised more than $300,000 for retired racehorses.

The summer fundraiser for California Retirement Management Account raised more than $125,000 to help fund its retirement and aftercare programs. CARMAthon was promoted throughout Saturday's GI TVG Pacific Classic day card at Del Mar by TVG, which created and played videos showcasing Thoroughbreds who retired through CARMA's Placement Program in their second careers as sport horses and whose on-air commentators highlighted the importance of aftercare for the sport.

“The success of CARMAthon means so much to us and the horses,” said Billy Koch, CARMA's Treasurer and Little Red Feather Racing Founder and Managing Partner. “Taking care of horses is a responsibility and that's the truth and what we're all about. Thank you to everyone who donated to our fundraiser.”

CARMA Executive Director Lucinda Lovitt added, “We were so touched by the overwhelming success of the event in back-to-back years. We didn't know if people would be receptive to another virtual fundraiser, but the level of donations, and social media engagement by the racing community, fans, and equine enthusiasts across the country was just amazing.”

Brought back for an encore performance, CARMA's summer fundraiser, CARMAthon did not disappoint. The nonprofit dedicated to Thoroughbred aftercare raised more than $125,000 to help fund its programs.

With the help of TVG, CARMAthon shared the spotlight on Pacific Classic Day and shined on social media platforms. TVG's on-air commentators promoted the event throughout the day, highlighting the importance of aftercare for the sport. The network also created and played videos showcasing Thoroughbreds who retired through CARMA's Placement Program in their second careers as sport horses.

<ins data-revive-zoneid=269 data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

<ins data-revive-zoneid=270 data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

Throughout the month leading up to the big day, CARMAthon hype dominated Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. Many supporters could not wait to donate to CARMAthon and began making contributions before the event even started. Once CARMAthon kicked off Saturday morning, donations continued to come in around the clock, even during the early morning and overnight hours.

“We were so touched by the overwhelming success of the event in back-to-back years,” said CARMA Executive Director Lucinda Lovitt. “We didn't know if people would be receptive to another virtual fundraiser but the level of donations, and social media engagement by the racing community, fans, and equine enthusiasts across the country was just amazing.”

CARMAthon donors included TVG Network, Marsha Naify, Samantha Siegel, Oak Tree Racing Foundation, Bob & Jill Baffert, James Perry, Joe & Debby McCloskey, Santa Anita Park, Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners, Amerman Racing, Golden Gate Fields, Madeline Auerbach, MyRaceHorse, Onofrio Pecoraro, Ben Posen, Edward “Rusty” Brown Jr., Mickey Segal, Domenic Savides, Gary Hosman, Rick Gold, Joel & Cathy Eichenberger, Thorbred Stables and Kevin Lane.

It's only week two of the Beat Ray Everyday Beach Boss competition at Del Mar and I'm going to violate the first rule of holes: namely, when you're in one, stop digging.

I got myself into a hole last weekend when Rushie, the 3-1 third betting choice in the Grade 2 San Diego Handicap, ran an uninspiring sixth at the seaside track near San Diego, Calif. My mythical $100 wager ($70 win, $30 show) went up in smoke while my Beach Boss opponent, Scotty McKeever (@ScottyPick6) of Equinedge.com, was all in on the race winner, Express Train, his $100 win wager returning $390.

This week's Beach Boss challenger is Little Red Feather Racing founder Billy Koch, who will attempt to do the unthinkable and defeat me two years in a row.

<ins data-revive-zoneid=451 data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

<ins data-revive-zoneid=452 data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

I'm going to keep digging to get out of that first week hole, so I'm betting against Going Global, who will be gunning for her sixth consecutive win and fifth since being imported into the U.S. and joining Phil D'Amato's barn. She'll be the heavy favorite in a field of 11, draws a favorable inside post position and gets leading rider Flavien Prat.

Watch this week's Beach Boss video, hosted by Michelle Yu, to see where Billy and I land with our wagers.

And it's not too late to sign up, as the Beach Boss contest continues every day of the summer racing season. Bet a mythical $100 each day and at the end of the meet, the player with the largest bankroll will win two VIP tickets to this year's Breeders' Cup at Del Mar. Sign up and get all the details here.

Last year when facing a massive budget shortfall, the umbrella organization overseeing the fate of California’s retired racehorses dodged a metaphorical projectile.

“We were just so overwhelmed by the support we got for CARMAthon by the racing community,” Lucinda Lovitt, executive director of the California Retirement Management Account (CARMA), said of a fundraising event held last year at Del Mar on Pacific Classic day. “Everybody on the board–especially those on the event committee–was blown away.”

Due to the fact that CARMA is primarily funded from purse contributions by owners, trainers and jockeys, a racing calendar decimated by the pandemic coupled with an already attenuated race-week meant the organization was facing a roughly 30% budget deficit for the year.

“That takes my available money for grants from something like $280,000 to $190,000,” Lovitt added. “It was huge to have that reduction.”

In the end, the CARMAthon raised approximately $120,000–an amount neither Lovitt nor her fellow board members dared to hope likely beforehand. And it meant that, come the end of the year, the organization was “able to hold its own” financially, she said.

Nevertheless, with the pandemic having set to daily life with a battering ram, busting apart an economic status-quo long underpinning the industry, CARMA is bracing for another fiscal rubble-field in 2021 by asking some tough questions of itself and the organizations it helps sustain.

“As we saw in 2019, it is critical for the racing and breeding industry to demonstrate that they have a plan for horses once they’re finished with that part of their career,” said Lovitt. “The general public will accept nothing less than absolute assurance that we’re taking care of these horses once they’re done racing.”

At the same time, this component of the industry “still doesn’t get the attention it needs and it still doesn’t get the funding that it needs,” Lovitt warned. “We’re still struggling to create real meaningful funding sources–continuous funding streams–for transitioning these horses from the racetrack to second careers and finding homes for them to live out the rest of their lives.”

Broadly speaking, CARMA is broken into three main parts. There’s the grant component–the one funded through purse contributions–through which the organization meters out hundreds of thousands of dollars to various aftercare facilities each year.

In the benighted year of 2020, CARMA decorated about 20 different organizations with some $300,000 in total–the year prior, the total amount distributed was some $80,000 more.

“We had some very hard conversations about not only the immediate need of providing grants to aftercares that desperately need help, but also having to look at the long-term stability of the organization and being able to prepare for what may or may not happen in 2021,” said Lovitt.

The second component is their placement program, sustained almost entirely through The Stronach Group (TSG) matching the purse donations generated from races run at Santa Anita.

The gauntlet thrown down by a global pandemic, leading to a raft of closed doors, makes the organization’s bread-and-butter hands-on placement work–akin to shaking hands and kissing babies–infinitely harder. Yet, CARMA managed to find new homes for nearly 50 horses, which is comparable to previous hauls–this, when the program halved the usual number of horses it manages at any one time from 20 to about 10. “Fifty horses [re-homed] when you’ve got only 10 or 12 at a time is great,” she said.

Still, being able to put eyeballs on horses on the backstretch and at lay-up facilities is “what we miss the most,” said Lovitt. “We miss physically being able to see and touch that horse–stand in front of the trainer and talk to them about that horse, taking pictures.”

CARMA’s third main spoke concerns fund-raising–which is where last year’s CARMAthon swooped in like an avenging angel.

“We needed an idea,” said Billy Koch, CARMA board member and the driving force behind the event. “So, I said, ‘We need to raise money and we have to pretty much do everything virtually, why don’t we do a telethon?’ They used to do it in the past for charities.”

The idea to hold it on Pacific Classic day was Del Mar and TVG’s, Koch said. “We were going to do it on the Sunday after,” he said.

As for the grand count, “I’ve got to tell you, the people of Del Mar and TVG and the entire horse racing community is to be credited,” he added. “They really stepped up.”

Which leads to the year upon us–one that has started as inauspiciously as the last one ended, with COVID-19’s iron grip on the industry just as suffocating.

Will there be another CARMAthon this year? Maybe. But when it comes to fundraising, the trick, says CARMA board members like Koch, is to keep changing the menu all the while ensuring the ingredients are fresh.

“I don’t like CARMA to run the same thing every year, only because you wear people out with the same events,” said Madeline Auerbach, who founded the organization roughly 12 years ago. “We’re always looking for the next new, wonderful idea.”

But what if that wonderful new idea doesn’t materialize as desired? The economic Sword of Damocles hovering over the industry the past 12 months has led Auerbach to a place of tough reflection.

“It made me realize how vulnerable we all are,” she said. “I think last year is the first time I’ve really felt as if we needed an exit-strategy for the day that, if it comes when we don’t have racing any more, how these horses are going to be supported.”

As such, Auerbach sees the role of a governing board–the group of individuals charged with guiding each individual non-profit aftercare–as foundation stones to the resiliency of each organization through the idea that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

“You’re not going to last very long–you’re not going to be around for very long–without a board capable of taking on the responsibility that most people who run rescues can’t do,” she said. “When you’re running a rescue, it’s all you can do to make sure that the lights stay on and the horses get fed.”

As someone similarly slogging away from the trenches, Lovitt is only too starkly aware of what a vastly changed industry landscape means on a day-to-day basis for CARMA. And while donations are always going to prove a useful safety-net for the organization, there’s an impermanence to charity that makes long-term sustainable goals slippery.

“What we’re going to be looking at in 2021 are additional new–new to us–sources of continuous funding,” Lovitt said, pointing to what is currently an industry-wide remeasurement of the purse-strings.

“This is truly going to be a year in which aftercare, but I’m guessing the entire racing community, takes a long look at how things are funded,” Lovitt continued. “How do we pay for things? How do we continue doing the things that we do? We’re going to have to take a long hard look at that.”

In what is presumed to be the first hire of its kind, Little Red Feather Racing (LRF), California's largest horse racing syndicate, on Tuesday announced the hiring of an independent compliance consultant to oversee all aspects of its racing and sales divisions. The consultant will ensure that LRF's trainers, veterinarians, and staffs comply within regulatory rules as well as LRF's internal policies regarding training and medication.

“Many industries have compliance managers, why not horse ownership?” said LRF Managing Partner Gary Fenton. “We want our partners to have the utmost confidence and trust that our equine athletes receive world-class care.”

<ins data-revive-zoneid="433" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

“It's time we take a long hard look at everything we provide to our equine athletes,” said LRF Founder and Managing Partner Billy Koch, “Current training practices need to evolve with changing times.”

Effective immediately, Tom McCrocklin will serve as compliance consultant for the LRF team and report directly to Fenton and Koch.

Born in Baton Rouge, La., McCrocklin has an undergraduate degree from LSU and a Bachelor of Science in Animal Science, specializing in equine from Louisiana Tech. McCrocklin trained at east coast race tracks until 1992 where he moved to Ocala, Fla., to commence a breaking/training/sales operation, representing some of the biggest names in the industry.

McCrocklin will review veterinarian and training bills as well as regularly visit each LRF barn. He will work alongside LRF's trainers and vets to create a universal set of protocols. “Since I am a trainer and understand the culture and mentality, I look forward to working with my colleagues to create a methodology that is positive for everyone,” said McCrocklin. “Most trainers want to learn and try less medications and supplements; they just need the educational and support tools to do so.”

“Too often we hear discussion about a problem in our industry, yet rarely is there a solution posed,” said Jim Gagliano, president of The Jockey Club. “Today is not that day. We applaud LRF for taking this innovative step and showing that owners can and will take measures to ensure best practices are being met within our industry.”

Formed in 2002, LRF and its sister company Solana Beach Sales (SBS) are California's largest syndicate, managing nearly 100 horses and over 300 active partners. LRF recently concluded a record breaking summer in 2020 with 11 wins at Del Mar from its managed partnerships, including wins in the G2 Del Mar Handicap – a Breeders' Cup Win and You're In race – with Red King, and the G2 John C Mabee Stakes with Raymundos Secret. LRF campaigned Breeders' Cup Winner Singletary and G1 winners Egg Drop, Secret Spice, Fault, Mirth and stallion Midnight Storm. SBS burst onto the sales scene in 2016 and graduates include G1 winners Instilled Regard, Bast and G1 placed Anneau D'Or who finished 2nd in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile at the 2019 World Championships.

The consultant will ensure that LRF’s trainers, veterinarians, and staffs comply within regulatory rules as well as LRF’s internal policies regarding training and medication.

“Many industries have compliance managers, why not horse ownership?” said LRF Managing Partner Gary Fenton. “We want our partners to have the utmost confidence and trust that our equine athletes receive world class care.”

LRF Founder and Managing Partner Billy Koch added, “It’s time we take a long, hard look at everything we provide to our equine athletes. Current training practices need to evolve with changing times.”

Effective immediately, Tom McCrocklin will serve as compliance consultant for the LRF team and report directly to Fenton and Koch.

After nosing out TVG analyst Christina Blacker last week when Collusion Illusion held off Lexitonian in the Grade 1 Bing Crosby Stakes, my friends at Del Mar rounded up a confidence builder in Little Red Feather managing partner Billy Koch for this Saturday's edition of the Beat Ray online handicapping contest.

It's the equivalent of going up against Grade 1 competition and then dropping into an entry-level allowance race.

<ins data-revive-zoneid=451 data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

<ins data-revive-zoneid=452 data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

I'm only kidding, of course. Billy, who grew up on the mean streets of Beverly Hills, was reading the Daily Racing Form instead of See Spot Run as a toddler and cutting kindergarten classes to go racing at Hollywood Park with his movie mogul grandfather, Howard Koch. He never left the track, turning his passion for the game into a career, founding Little Red Feather Racing partnerships that he now manages with Gary Fenton.

This week's contest race is the G2 Yellow Ribbon Stakes, the ninth of 11 on Saturday. First post is 2 p.m. PT, and the Yellow Ribbon is scheduled to go at 6:10 p.m. PT.

Billy will join fellow handicapper Michelle Yu and me on Saturday at 11 a.m. PT on Del Mar's social media accounts (Facebook, Twitter, Youtube) to handicap the Yellow Ribbon, whose seven-horse field includes last year's winner, the Irish-bred Beau Recall, trained by Brad Cox. Tune in to hear our handicapping strategies and bets for the contest.

Beat Ray Everyday is an online contest offered every racing day of the Del Mar summer meet. It's free to play and you can sign up here. Bet a mythical $100 each day on the selected contest race in win, place or show bets on any horse or horses. At the end of the meet, the player with the highest bankroll from those wagers becomes the “Beach Boss” and wins two VIP tickets to the 2021 Breeders' Cup at Del Mar. Other prizes are available to top finishers and anyone who finishes ahead of me is entered in a drawing for even more prizes.

Every Saturday, a racing or sports celebrity will be a guest handicapper for the contest race.
