The stakes schedule for the 2024 Belmont at the Big A spring/summer meet, which will open Thursday, May 2, will include 32 stakes worth more than $6.6 million in total purses, the New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) announced Tuesday.

As announced in December, the ongoing construction of a new and re-imagined Belmont Park will require significant adjustments to the customary NYRA schedule. Most notably, the 2024 Belmont Stakes Racing Festival will be held at Saratoga Race Course from June 6-9. In addition, the spring/summer and fall meets traditionally held at Belmont will take place at Aqueduct Racetrack in 2024.

Differences between the circumference of Belmont Park and Aqueduct Racetrack will require slight distance changes to a number of races to be contested during the Belmont at the Big A spring/summer meet.

On the turf, five races previously run at seven-furlongs [Elusive Quality, Soaring Softly, Paradise Creek, NYSSS Cupecoy's Joy, NYSSS Spectacular Bid] will be contested at six-furlongs. In addition, both the GI Belmont Derby Invitational and GI Fasig-Tipton Belmont Oaks Invitational will be contested at 1 3/16-miles on turf rather than the customary 1 1/4-miles. On the main track, the GII Brooklyn will be run at 11 furlongs rather than the traditional 12 furlongs.

A stakes-laden program on Saturday, July 6 will feature four graded events led by a pair of Grade Is on the turf in the $750,000 Belmont Derby Invitational for sophomores and the $500,000 Fasig-Tipton Belmont Oaks Invitational for sophomore fillies. These prestigious contests will be supported by the GII, $200,000 John A. Nerud for older horses sprinting seven furlongs and the GIII, $200,000 Dwyer for sophomores going one mile.

Siena Farm and WinStar Farm's 'TDN Rising Star' Timberlake (c, 2, Into Mischief–Pin Up {Ire}, by Lookin At Lucky), a bit of an unlucky second as the favorite in the GI Hopeful S. at Saratoga Sept. 4, got back, ahem, in sync with a stylish score in Saturday's 'Win and You're In' GI Champagne S. at the Big A.

“He ran good,” winning trainer Brad Cox said. “I was very proud of him. He got a good, clean trip today. [Jockey] Florent [Geroux] did a great job. He got away well. We had a bit of a rough trip in the Hopeful. I thought with a little bit of a cleaner run he maybe would have got to the wire first, but that's the way it goes. I'm very proud of the effort today. It was a huge win.”

Cox continued, “You obviously turn your attention to the Breeders' Cup [Juvenile] as it comes up first. We'll get him back to Kentucky and see how he comes out of it and let him tell us if we take a march towards Santa Anita. We'll enjoy this victory and go from there.”

Taking blinkers off for this after getting very eager while racing in tight quarters in the early stages of the Hopeful, the 9-2 chance traveled kindly in an inside fifth this time around as sharp second-out General Partner (Speightstown) sped through an opening quarter in :22.49 over the sloppy going. He set his sights on the pacesetter approaching the quarter pole and rolled down the center in the stretch to win going away by 4 1/4 lengths. General Partner was second; Dancing Groom (Vino Rosso) finished third.

'TDN Rising Star' Fierceness (City of Light), hammered down to 1-2 favoritism off a sensational debut score in the mud at the Spa Aug. 25, lunged at the start, and, after making a bold run at the leader on the far turn, tired in the stretch to finish a well-beaten seventh.

Favored in all three of his previous starts, Timberlake was a well-beaten sixth on debut behind subsequent runaway GII Saratoga Special S. winner Rhyme Schemes (Ghostzapper) at Ellis Park June 15. He romped by 9 1/4 lengths over future GIII Iroquois S. winner West Saratoga (Exaggerator) for 'Rising Star' status at Ellis July 21 prior to his aforementioned runner-up finish at the Spa on Labor Day. Timberlake was scratched out of Saturday's two-turn GI Claiborne Breeders' Futurity S. at Keeneland in favor of this spot going a one-turn mile.

“We talked about it and thought this was a good spot,” WinStar's Elliott Walden said. “The Champagne is a great race, a stallion-making race. We're excited to win it, it's the first time we've ever won it.”

Walden added, “He's accomplished a lot in a short period of time. I think [two turns] will be good, but we'll see. He's a big strong horse with a beautiful pedigree, a two-turn type of pedigree.”

Pedigree Notes:

Timberlake becomes the 18th Grade I winner worldwide for his all-conquering sire. Into Mischief's Practical Joke won this same race in 2016. Lookin At Lucky is now the broodmare sire of six graded/group winners worldwide.

Timberlake's stakes-placed Irish-bred dam is a half-sister to G2 Hardwicke S. and G2 King Edward VII S. hero Thomas Chippendale (Ire) (Dansili {GB}). Timberlake's second dam MG1SP All My Loving (Ire) (Sadler's Wells) is a full-sister to G1 Irish One Thousand Guineas victress and GI Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf third-place finisher Yesterday (Ire). The winner's dam is also responsible for a yearling colt by Army Mule and a colt by Known Agenda of this year.

Just F Y I (f, 2, Justify–Star Act, by Street Cry {Ire}), up in time by a head sprinting on debut at a well-backed 7-2 at the Spa Aug. 26, provided a rolling Grade I double for owner George Krikorian and Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott with a powerful performance in Saturday's 'Win and You're In' GI Frizette S. at a rainy Aqueduct Racetrack.

“[The track] was the big question and we didn't know,” Mott said after saddling his first Frizette winner since Confessional in 1998. “You don't know until you run them. We thought she was a nice filly and, in this day and age, I guess if you break your maiden impressively you're looking at going to a stakes race because there aren't many allowance races.”

As for a start in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies at Santa Anita, Mott added, “That would be the plan today. We'll wait and see how she comes back and go from there.”

The 9-2 chance found a perfect spot in an outside third through an opening quarter in :23.63 while navigating the one-turn mile over very sloppy going. The Krikorian homebred loomed boldly while four wide on the far turn, gained a narrow advantage at the top of the stretch and leveled off beautifully down the lane to win going away by 3 3/4 lengths over longshot Central Avenue (Street Sense). Life Talk (Gun Runner) was third. Favored Emery (More Than Ready), a runaway winner on debut in the Saratoga mud Aug. 30, was a disappointing fourth.

Krikorian and Mott were also represented one race earlier on the card by GI Joe Hirsch Turf Classic S. winner War Like Goddess (English Channel).

“It's very special,” Mott said. “[Mr. Krikorian] has been a very good client and he sends me some horses that he thinks are going to be OK. I have a small group of horses for him, but they are all quite nice.”

Krikorian added, “It's very special. I couldn't be more pleased, I'm ecstatic.”

Pedigree Notes:

Triple Crown winner Justify, sire of last Sunday's G1 Qatar Prix Marcel Boussac Criterium des Pouliches heroine Opera Singer; Wednesday's GII Miss Grillo S. winner Hard to Justify; and Friday's GII Jessamine S. winner Buchu; is now responsible for four Grade I/Group 1 winners worldwide.

Out of a stakes-placed daughter of Krikorian's MGISW and savvy $35,000 FTKOCT yearling purchase Starrer (Dynaformer), Just F Y I hails from the female family of another accomplished set of fillies in MGISW Stellar Jayne (Wild Rush) and GISW Star Billing (Dynaformer).

This is also the family of GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf runner-up Uncle Benny (Declaration of War). Just F Y I's dam Star Act produced a 2023 full-sister to the victress and was bred to Life Is Good for 2024.

Madeline Rowland's journey to becoming a jockey reached the next level last Sunday when she scored her first win on the NYRA circuit over the Aqueduct main track.

Still just a teenager and already over the million-dollar mark in earnings, Rowland knew early on that her future was in horses.

“I always grew up around horses,” she said. “My dad trained steeplechase horses before he passed and my mom galloped for a little bit and helped my dad train. When I was 12 or 13, I started pony racing and then I started working for Lizzie Merryman when I was 15 or 16. And ever since then, [I knew] I was going to be jockey.”

Now based around the Mid-Atlantic after a hugely successful winter at Tampa Bay Downs, Rowland enjoys the hustle of riding multiple tracks in the same week.

“After doing pretty good in Tampa [Bay Downs], and coming to ride in the Mid-Atlantic, I definitely had goals and things I had to work for,” said Rowland. “It's awesome though because there's so many tracks around here that you can ride from one hour to six hours away. It's tough here,” she admits. “It was a little hard to get going but I am happy with how it's going now. I've been riding with really great people that have helped me a lot and I've gotten really good opportunities.”

Through the learning process of being an apprentice jockey, Rowland cops to being her own biggest critic. When asked what the hardest part of the journey had been thus far, she said, “Being honest, beating myself up. I really want to do a good job. I do see improvement in my riding but I think because I care so much about the horses, I make it that much harder on myself.”

As fort he most enjoyable part, Rowland said, “Working with the horses and getting paid to do something I would probably do for free! I absolutely love the horses. Winning a race is always the best feeling, especially meaningful wins like the other day [for trainer Michael Dini]. Mike has helped me out so much, [it] was absolutely amazing to win a race in New York.”

Now a finalist in the Newcomer division for the Oct. 14 Thoroughbred Industry Employee Awards, Rowland looks to have a big month ahead.

“It's so awesome. Horses have always been such a huge part of my life,” she said. “I don't know where I'd be without them. They have taught me so much about work ethic, discipline, and really how to care of these animals and put them before ourselves. That's what you have to do in this business. And it means so much to be nominated for an award like this to show horsemanship. It's not just about winning races–it's about caring for these amazing animals who are trying so hard for us.”

With a weekend of rides coming up at the Meadowlands, seven entries over both days, Rowland shares the hopes of many of us along the Mid-Atlantic after a week of less-than-ideal weather.

“I just hope we run [on the turf],” she laughed. “We've had so much rain this week. We'll see how it goes. The horses are all in good spots so I'm hopeful [for my chances].”

And once the action slows down up north, Rowland looks forward to returning to her south Florida roots.

“That track [Tampa Bay Downs] will always be my favorite just because I've done so well there. I love their turf and the people there. There's very kind people that want to help you, and the racing is really good and competitive. I'll drive back to down to Tampa [Bay Downs] in the beginning of November for the meet there that starts at the end of the month.”

In this continuing series, we examine the past winners of significant filly/mare races by the lasting influence they've had on the breed. Up today is Belmont's GI Frizette S., a race with a tremendous amount of repercussion on the sport.

The 1905 mare Frizette, for whom this 2-year-old filly race is named, may have been just a minor sprint stakes winner, but she was an absolute giant in the breeding shed. A foundation mare in both the U.S. and France, Frizette's descendants through her daughters include one of yesteryear's top French sires, Tourbillon (Fr), and modern U.S. stalwarts Mr. Prospector and Seattle Slew. Among the long list of top performers tracing to her are stars as varied as Dr. Fager and Dahlia, and many, many more.

How fitting then that among the 74 previous winners of the Frizette, which was inaugurated in 1945, a number would become breed-shaping broodmares in their own right.

Some of the Frizette winners who belong on this list were previously featured in our “Background Checks” for the GI Alabama S., GI Test S., and/or GIII Schuylerville S.; please see those earlier profiles for notes on Phipps homebreds Numbered Account and Heavenly Prize and the Florida-bred Meadow Star.

Following are the some of the other most important Frizette winners by what impact they have had on the sport through their sons and daughters.

Dreaming of Julia (2010, A.P. Indy–Dream Rush, by Wild Rush): This Stonestreet homebred's only foal to make it to the races thus far is Malathaat, last year's champion 3-year-old filly after her 2021 wins included the GI Kentucky Oaks, GI Alabama S., and the GI Ashland S. She was last seen taking Saratoga's GI Personal Ensign S. Sept. 27.

Preach (1989, Mr. Prospector–Narrate, by Honest Pleasure): A fourth-generation Claiborne homebred, Preach's indelible mark on the breed will forever be through her first foal, fellow Claiborne homebred and MGSW Pulpit. Not only did he have a number of top runners as a stallion, but he's been a noted sire of sires, most especially due to his exceptional multiple-leading sire son Tapit.

Personal Ensign (1984, Private Account–Grecian Banner, by Hoist the Flag): A horse can't do any more than this grand girl did. She was perfection: an undefeated champion as a racehorse and a Broodmare of the Year in her second career. A Phipps family homebred, Personal Ensign produced MGISW My Flag, as well as GISWs Miner's Mark and Traditionally. Her daughters have produced a number of top-flight runners, including champion Storm Flag Flying, who emulated her granddam and won the Frizette in 2002; GISWs Mr Speaker and Seeking the Soul; and this summer's GII Suburban S. winner Dynamic One.

Regal Gleam (1964, Hail to Reason–Miz Carol, by Stymie): A number of high-caliber horses trace to this Bieber-Jacobs Stable runner, none better than her grandson Caerleon. A Group 1 winner in both England and France, he later distinguished himself with leading sire titles in both England and Ireland.

Priceless Gem (1963, Hail to Reason–Searching, by War Admiral): Like Regal Gleam, above, Bieber-Jacobs Stable bred this lovely mare, whose most important foal was French Horse of the Year and G1 Prix d l'Arc de Triomphe victress Allez France. She's also the ancestress of GISWs Al Mamoon, La Gueriere, Ordway, Honor in War, and Icon Project, as well as of current top 10 leading sire Munnings.

My Dear Girl (1957, Rough'n Tumble–Iltis, by War Relic): Not too many mares produce seven stakes winners and not many leave a sire son as impactful as In Reality. Among his best runners and stallion sons were Relaunch, Known Fact, and Believe It, while the legacies left out of his daughters included Broodmare of the Year Toussaud. My Dear Girl was bred in Florida by Ocala Stud Farms.

Bimlette (1944, Bimelech–Bloodroot, by Blue Larkspur): Bred by E. R. Bradley's Idle Hour Stock Farm and out of the 1946 Broodmare of the Year, Bimlette delivered three stakes winners, including 1963 Wood Memorial winner and sire No Robbery. Champion and Breeders' Cup winner Beautiful Pleasure and her full-brother, MGISW Mecke, both trace to her, as does champion Tempest Queen, GISW Dream Dancing, a host of other GSWs, and a current leading sire in New York, Mission Impazible.

The post Background Check: Frizette appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions.

Kimari (Munnings) tuned up for the GI Breeders' Cup F/M Sprint with an effortless victory in the GII Gallant Bloom S. at the Belmont at Aqueduct meet Sunday. The 3-5 favorite sat just off pacesetting Lady Rocket (Tale of the Cat) through an opening quarter in :23.55. The pacesetter looked to skip away into the stretch after a half in :46.98, but Joel Rosario was still motionless aboard Kimari. Rosario flicked his wrists at the favorite and she duly inhaled Lady Rocket and strode clear to the wire while under wraps.

“That's what you want to see, right? We were excited and this race set up beautifully for her time-wise to get from here to the Breeders' Cup,” said winning trainer Wesley Ward. “The timing gave her a couple of extra weeks [as opposed to a start in the Oct. 8 GII Thoroughbred Club of America]. She always relishes the time between starts. For her, it should work out perfect. Whether she's good enough, we'll find out.”

Rosario was impressed with Kimari's effort.

“She's special. She runs hard all the time and she ran a good race again today,” Rosario said. “She was very comfortable. She was loving what she was doing out there. For a second, I was worried the horse in front of me [Lady Rocket] would keep moving forward, but my filly kept gaining and I had a lot of confidence.”

'TDN Rising Star' Kimari returned from seven months on the sidelines to finish seventh in the GI Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint last November at Del Mar and just two days later Coolmore's M.V. Magnier signed the ticket on the filly for $2.7 million at the Fasig-Tipton November sale. She opened 2022 with an optional-claiming score at Gulfstream Mar. 3 and was third while attempting to defend her title in the GI Madison S. at Keeneland Apr. 9. She was fifth in the May 7 GI Derby City Distaff S. before getting up late for a half-length victory in the July 27 GII Honorable Miss S. at Saratoga last time out.

“She'll head back to Keeneland tomorrow,” Ward said. “It'll give her six weeks on both her and my home track, so hopefully everything works out.”

Ward continued, “A lot of things have worked out for her in her last two starts when she drew the outside. When you're last in, she bounces away from there. In the Breeders' Cup, it'll be a bigger field, so if she gets there down below, Joel will have to work his way out, so we'll see how it goes.”

Pedigree Notes:

Kimari, a daughter of graded winner Cozze Up Lady, has a yearling half-brother by Constitution who sold for $1.3 million two weeks ago at Keeneland September, and a weanling half-brother by Tiz the Law. Cozze Up Lady, who was bred to Charlatan this year, was purchased by the China Horse Club for $300,000 at the 2014 Fasig-Tipton November sale.

1st-Belmont The Big A, $95,000, Msw, 9-16, 2yo, 6f, 1:12.12, ft, 1 1/4 lengths.
QUICK HAMMER (c, 2, Mor Spirit–Malibu Cove, by Malibu Moon), picked up for just $100,000 out of the Fasig-Tipton Timonium Sale (:10 1/5) earlier this year, broke sharply from an outside gate, outpaced only by Warman Road (Unified) to his outside. Taken in hand, he rated patiently while racing two wide in company into the far turn with Space (Ghostzapper) until given his cue with just over a quarter mile to run. Still with a length to make up on the leader turning for home, Quick Hammer wasted no time reeling that tiring rival in inside of the final eighth and drawing off. Signator (Tapit), a $1.7-million OBS April purchase, rallied nicely but ran out of ground as Quick Hammer went on to a 1 1/4-length win. The eighth winner for his freshman sire (by Eskendereya), Quick Hammer is a half-brother to Kalypso (Brody's Cause), GISW, $601,878 and is out of a full-sister to MGSW Prospective. Malibu Cove produced a yearling colt by Jimmy Creed and a weanling colt by Authentic. She was bred back to Authentic for 2023. Sales History: $200,000 Ylg '21 FTKJUL; $100,000 2yo '22 EASMAY. Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, $52,250. Click for the Equibase.com chart.
