Gifted an ideal lead in Sunday's G3 Prix de Fontainebleau, Aurelien Lemaitre took full advantage to steer Nurlan Bizakov's Ramadan (Fr) (Le Havre {Ire}–Raushan {Ire}, by Dalakhani {Ire}) to success in the key G1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains trial. Race-fit having registered a five-length success in the Listed Prix Omnium II at Saint-Cloud last month, the Christopher Head-trained homebred who had been fourth in the G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud last term ticked off honest fractions on the front end before kicking in early straight.

Getting the jump on the returning TDN Rising Star Beauvatier (Fr) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) there, the 6-4 favourite had extra to give as that chief market rival paid late for having to accelerate harder to close. At the line, Ramadan had 3/4 of a length to spare over him, with the same margin back to the re-opposing Omnium runner-up Grey Man (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}), who narrowed the gap between him and the winner. The sectionals were faster at every step than the Grotte, suggesting that the winner made it a relative test by French trial standards.

“The better the ground, the better the horse, I would say,” Bizakov said. “It is emotional for me, because he is by Le Havre, who is no longer with us and I bought the mare from Lady O'Reilly, who is no longer with us. For sure he deserves to be in the Poulains and we'll go there with an open mind. He'll stay the Jockey Club distance too.”

Before taking part in the 10-furlong Criterium de Saint-Cloud, Ramadan had beaten the same owner's Narkez (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}) at Chantilly in September and that Andre Fabre trainee has subsequently gained a TDN Rising Star tag and heads to Newmarket for Wednesday's nine-furlong Listed Feilden S. Bizakov was not ruling out the prospect of running both in the Poulains. “They are with different trainers, so I might end up with two horses running,” he added. “We'll see what happens on Wednesday and make a plan.”

Trainer Yann Barberot was happy with the effort of the G3 Prix la Rochette winner Beauvatier and said, “It was an excellent performance for his first time over a mile on very soft ground. The winner had the benefit of a previous run and was not for catching after leading.”

Pedigree Notes
Ramadan's dam Raushan, a 400,000gns Tatts Book 1 purchase who stayed a mile and a half, gave an instant return on that pay-out by producing as her first foal the Listed Fleur de Lys S. winner and G3 Hoppings S. runner-up Rasima (GB) (Iffraaj {GB}). Out of Lady O'Reilly's smart Chiang Mai (Ire) (Sadler's Wells), who captured the Blandford S. when it was staged as a group 3 and was runner-up in the G2 Prix Jean de Chaudenay, she is a full-sister to the triple group-winning Chinese White (Ire). Her career highlights included success in the G1 Pretty Polly S. and the Blandford in its current guise as a group 2 event, before producing the G3 Supreme S. runner-up Misty Grey (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}).
The third dam is the renowned Eljazzi (Artaius), responsible for the G1 Prix de Diane heroine Rafha (GB)
(Kris {GB}) who in turn achieved notoriety as the dam of the G1 Haydock Sprint Cup hero and significant sire Invicible Spirit (Ire) and his G3 Princess Royal S.-winning half-sister Acts Of Grace (Bahri) who in turn threw Make Believe's triple top-level scorer Mishriff (Ire). Rafha's Listed Empress S.-winning daughter Massarra (GB) (Danehill) also proved herself an excellent producer with six black-type winners including Galileo's G2 Superlative S.-winning sire Gustav Klimt (Ire). Raushan's 2-year-old filly is by Showcasing (GB).

France's key mile Classic trials take place on Sunday, with ParisLongchamp hosting the G3 Prix de la Grotte and G3 Prix de Fontainebleau over the same course and distance of next month's G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches and Poulains. The Grotte sees some major names among the generation's fillies making their seasonal return, led by China Horse Club International's G1 Prix Marcel Boussac runner-up Rose Bloom (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) and Alain Jathiere's G3 Prix des Reservoirs winner Tulipa Chope (Fr) (Born To Sea {Ire}). The Aga Khan's four-length Chantilly conditions winner Candala (Fr) (Frankel {GB}) adds spice from Francis-Henri Graffard's Aiglemont base. With ample stamina in her pedigree, the latter will have to prove sharp enough to deal with speed-tested peers here but it is intriguing that Graffard opts for a mile to restart her.

In the Fontainebleau, the Poulains contenders include Philippe Allaire and Haras d'Etreham's G3 Prix la Rochette-winning TDN Rising Star Beauvatier (Fr) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) who lost his unbeaten record but effectively nothing in defeat when third from a compromising draw in the G1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere. He faces a fellow 3-year-old bigwig in Nurlan Bizakov's Ramadan (Fr) (Le Havre {Ire}), who was fourth in the G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud, had beaten the subsequent TDN Rising Star Narkez (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}) at Chantilly and returned this term with a five-length success in the Listed Prix Omnium II at Saint-Cloud last month. There is also Peter R Bradley III's unbeaten Metropolitan (Fr) (Zarak {Fr}), who beat the TDN Rising Star Elbaz (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}) over this trip at Chantilly when last seen in September and until he suffers defeat the Mario Baratti trainee's limit is unknown.

Beautiful sunshine bathed ParisLongchamp on its biggest day and Sunday's G1 Qatar Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere proved a fitting opener to the action with Rosallion (Ire) (Blue Point {Ire}–Rosaline {Ire}, by New Approach {Ire}) dominating the closing stages of this up-to-scratch renewal. Brilliant in Ascot's Listed Pat Eddery S. in July but disappointing when third in the G2 Champagne S. at Doncaster last month, Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum's homebred was truly on song here to provide Sean Levey with all the good vibrations in this qualifier for the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf.

Anchored in rear early from his compromising wide draw, the Richard Hannon-trained relative of some of the owner-breeder's best recent performers was finally unleashed 300 metres from the finish as Ryan Moore sent Ballydoyle's TDN Rising Star Unquestionable (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) for home. Accelerating impressively as he had done at Ascot to swamp that rival inside the last half furlong, the generously-priced 6-1 shot had a length to spare at the line as the too-keen previously-unbeaten TDN Rising Star and even-money favourite Beauvatier (Fr) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) wound up 1 1/2 lengths behind in third.

“He felt exceptional today,” Levey said of the live 2000 Guineas contender who was providing his first-crop sire sensation with his first Group 1 winner and setting a new track record into the bargain. “At Doncaster, when I asked him he didn't know what to do on that soft ground and he's still so babyish. He has a great mind though and he'll keep learning. He had to overcome a lot today from that draw and was a bit confused when I restrained him, especially in the false straight. I was always going to win today. He had his ground and that's how good he is.”

Rosallion, who had struck on debut over 6 1/2 furlongs at Newbury just before Royal Ascot, had set almost the benchmark in terms of British-trained juveniles in the Pat Eddery, where the likes of Al Musmak (Ire) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}), Alyanaabi (Ire) (Too Darn Hot {GB}) and Dancing Gemini (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) had trailed in his wake. Hannon had kept the faith after the Champagne and was relieved with this justification, completed in course-record time ahead of the previous 1:18.40 set by this race's winner Naaqoos (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) in 2008.

“It was very sticky ground at Doncaster and he hated it, but I was so disappointed–I couldn't believe he got beat. We scoped him afterwards and everything was fine and the only thing I can put it down to was the ground. Sean was as gutted as I was at Doncaster–I don't think he said a word to me after he got beat in the Champagne S. He couldn't believe it either, that's the sort of horse he is. Today was a recovery mission and you don't generally come to the Lagardere on a recovery mission, as it takes an extremely good horse to win it but he showed today that he's the horse we thought he was.”

“We'll look forward to the Guineas now for next year,” Hannon added. “I wouldn't rule out the Breeders' Cup, but I'm very happy to look forward to the Guineas. I haven't had much luck at the Breeders' Cup, obviously it's got to change at some stage but I think it's unlikely.”

Aidan O'Brien said of Unquestionable and the pace-setting Henry Adams (Ire) (No Nay Never), who finished fourth, “The trip was okay and both will be fine at a mile. Ryan said Unquestionable could be a horse for America, so we will look at the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf after seeing how they are. Unquestionable is definitely a Guineas horse, we will see which one next year.”

Yann Barberot said of Beauvatier, who recorded the race's fastest individual split between the two and the one at :10.56 but who was too free throughout the early stages, “We have been helped by the quick ground, but you need a colt with a lot of speed to win the Lagardere and he is not made for speed. In future, he will run over 1600 metres or even 2000 metres. I am very happy with him, he performed well. He found himself a bit behind at the start of the race, because he was impeded by the Andre Fabre-trained horse who pulled a lot.”

Pedigree Notes

Rosallion's unraced dam Rosaline is one of the progeny of the owner-breeder's sensational producer Reem Three (GB) (Mark Of Esteem {Ire}), whose seven black-type performers include this year's G1 Queen Anne S. hero Triple Time (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) and the G1 Prix Jean Romanet winner Ajman Princess (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}). Rosaline is a full-sister to the G2 Prix Daniel Wildenstein victor Ostilio (GB), while other Reem Three notables are the G3 Bengough S. winner Cape Byron (GB) by Blue Point's sire Shamardal and this year's Listed Heron S. winner Captain Winters (GB) whose sire Lope De Vega is also by Shamardal. The third dam is Jumaireyah (GB) (Fairy King), herself responsible for the G2 Celebration Mile and G3 Sovereign S. winner and GI Arlington Million runner-up Afsare (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}). Next up from Rosaline is a yearling colt by Make Believe (GB).

With no Inspiral (GB) (Frankel {GB}) lurking in Sunday's G1 Prix du Moulin de Longchamp, the way is clear for Big Rock (Fr) (Rock Of Gibraltar {Ire}) to bag that elite contest that his portfolio demands.

Having met his match in Ace Impact (Ire) in the 10 1/2-furlong G1 Prix du Jockey Club at Chantilly, Yeguada Centurion SL's G3 Prix de Guiche and G3 Prix la Force winner came up short against Cheveley Park Stud's high-class filly in Deauville's G1 Prix Jacques le Marois last month but that form looks enough in what is a winnable renewal on paper.

Team Valor International and Gary Barber's Facteur Cheval (Ire) (Ribchester {Ire}) has proven himself at this level on his last two starts, finishing third in a blanket in the G1 Prix d'Ispahan over another furlong and 55 yards before making Paddington (GB) (Siyouni {Fr}) work in the G1 Sussex S.

“Even though it's back in four and a half weeks which sounds like a reasonable amount of time, in the back of my mind I'm hoping he doesn't react to that last race, it certainly knocked out Paddington,” Team Valor CEO Barry Irwin said. “We are hopeful for a good race because Big Rock likes to go off in front and we need to have a target. The races where he hasn't ran quite up to scratch this year are when he got too far behind in a paceless race.”

Derby Rematch At Baden-Baden

In the day's G1 153rd Wettstar.de Grosser Preis von Baden, the G1 Deutsches Derby one-two Fantastic Moon (Ger) (Sea The Moon {Ger}) and Mr Hollywood (Ire) (Iquitos {Ger}) resume their rivalry, with the former having to bounce back from a beating from Nations Pride (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) in the G1 Grosser Dallmayr-Preis at Munich in late July. TDN Rising Star Mr Hollywood arrives fresh after a break since the Hamburg Classic and may offer the sternest threat to Ecurie Altima and Gerard Augustin-Normand's standard-setting G1 Dubai Sheema Classic and G1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud-placed Zagrey (Fr) (Zarak {Fr}).

Rochette Task For Beauvatier

Back at ParisLongchamp, Philippe Allaire and Haras d'Etreham's Listed Prix Roland de Chambure-winning TDN Rising Star Beauvatier (Fr) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) bids to maintain his unbeaten record in the seven-furlong G3 Prix la Rochette, where he meets fellow TDN Rising Star Havana Cigar (GB) (Havana Grey {GB}). White Birch Farm's grey is up a furlong, having finished third in Deauville's G3 Prix de Cabourg. In the 10-furlong G3 Prix du Prince d'Orange, the exciting G2 Prix Eugene Adam winner Horizon Dore (Fr) (Dabirsim {Fr}) builds towards a major autumn target in the Gousserie silks made famous by a similar type in Sealiway (Fr).

Yann Barberot trainee Beauvatier (Fr) (Lope De Vega {Ire}–Enchanting Skies {Ire}, by Sea The Stars {Ire}) was two-for-two heading into Deauville's Listed Prix Roland de Chambure and remained on a roll after notching a 1 1/4-length success in the seven-furlong test. He became the 12th 'TDN Rising Star' for his sire (by Shamardal) in a May 9 five-furlong newcomers' test at Chantilly and doubled his haul later that month, upped to six furlongs at Saint-Cloud, with a defeat of 'TDN Rising Star' and subsequent G3 Prix du Bois victrix Ramatuelle (Justify) when last seen.

Beauvatier, now owned by Haras d'Etreham in partnership with Philippe Allaire, was steadied to track the leaders in third after a slick break in this black-type bow and was gathered together in readiness for his bid once turning for home. Angled outside for a clear run with 350 metres remaining, the 3-5 pick quickened in impressive fashion to seize control entering the final furlong and coasted to the line in the closing stages to easily withstand the late threat of Zabiari (GB) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) for a career high.

“This horse has really a big engine and he didn't even have to extend himself to win,” claimed Barberot. “When Maxime [Guyon] switched him out, he settled the issue within two strides. My concern is that the horse lacks some strength and I would like to see him change physically, to grow and strengthen up. This is why I will give him a small break now and hope that it will do him some good. He will return in September for the [Sept. 3 G3] Prix La Rochette [at ParisLongchamp].”

Beauvatier, a €160,000 Arqana August purchase and half to a yearling filly by Siyouni {Fr}), is the first of two foals produced by Listed Prix de Thiberville runner-up Enchanting Skies (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), herself a sale-topping €500,000 Baden-Baden September yearling in 2016. The February-foaled dark bay's dam is one of four stakes performers out of Listed Kolner Fruhjahrs-Stuten-Preis third Estefania (Ger) (Acatenango {Ger}), headed by G1 Preis von Europa victor Empoli (Ger) (Halling). Estefania, in turn, is out of a half-sister to multiple Group 1-winning G2 German 1000 Guineas and G2 Preis der Diana (German Oaks) heroine Elle Danzig (Ger) (Roi Danzig). Beauvatier becomes Lope De Vega's 113th stakes winner.

Christopher Head trainee RAMATUELLE (Justify) created a deep impression first time out when powering home by 4 1/2 lengths over five furlongs at Chantilly last month and the 'TDN Rising Star' makes her eagerly-awaited return upped in trip here. She encounters a trio of winners which includes fellow Rising Star Beauvatier (Fr) (Lope De Vega {Ire}), who made an equally taking debut when routing his rivals by 5 1/2 lengths and more over the same five-furlong strip at Chantilly earlier this month.

13.45 Curragh, Mdn, €20,000, 2yo, f, 6fT
Coolmore and Westerberg's well-related MATRIKA (IRE) (No Nay Never) faces eight rivals in this debut. She is a full-sister to the dual Group 3-winning G1 Takarazuka Kinen runner-up Unicorn Lion (Ire) and a half-sister to G1 Prix Morny-winning sire The Wow Signal (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}). Opposition to the Aidan O'Brien trainee includes Moyglare Stud Farm's homebred September Leaves (Ire) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}), who is out of a full-sister to multiple Group 1-winning dual Hong Kong champion Designs On Rome (Ire) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}), from the Jessica Harrington stable; and $105,000 Keeneland September graduate Grand Job (Justify), who is kin to G3 UAE Oaks victrix Divine Image (Scat Daddy) and represents Joseph O'Brien.

Philippe Allaire's Beauvatier (Fr) (Lope De Vega {Ire}–Enchanting Skies {Ire}, by Sea The Stars {Ire}) landed Tuesday's €50,000 Prix du Coq Chantant at Chantilly, the latest in France Galop's series of premium races for unraced 2-year-olds, earning in the process a 'TDN Rising Star' badge after posting an impressive 5 1/2-length triumph in the five-furlong dash.

Beauvatier broke from the outside stall and raced in rear while working his way across to the stands' side rail. Making smooth headway from halfway, the 23-10 second favourite cruised to the front on the bridle approaching the furlong marker and quickened again when changing leads inside the final 100 metres, surging clear in eyecatching fashion to mark his debut with a daylight success from Kumite (GB) (Dark Angel {Ire}).

“He had not worked a lot before that, but he showed speed and a good attitude in his only serious piece of work so I decided to supplement him for this,” explained trainer Yann Barberot. “Obviously, he has the ability to handle testing ground and we will see how much he improves before deciding on his next race. He has the pedigree to stay further so there is no hurry.”

The February-foaled dark bay becomes the 12th Rising Star for his sire, whose list includes GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf and GI Just A Game heroine Newspaperofrecord (Ire), National Stud resident Lope Y Fernandez (Ire), who placed five times at the highest level, and another GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf victrix in Aunt Pearl (Ire).

Allaire's wife Gitte spoke to TDN Europe on Tuesday, where she revealed that Christophe Soumillon called the couple after the race to compliment them on their bright prospect.

She said, “We are very excited about him. We bought him at the Arqana August Sale with Yann Barberot and he looked to be a very nice prospect. Yann picks out several horses for us at the sales to look at and we are happy to have found this one with him.

“Of course, it is always very exciting to start a young horse after you invest and it's already been a nice return on investment for him after winning a race like that on debut.”

Allaire added, “He has a good pedigree and there was a lot to like about him at the sales. He has good conformation, is a great walker and was very powerful even as a yearling. Lope De Vega is an elite stallion and is very sought after.

“It is the first time that Christophe Soumillon has called us after the race. He was so happy. I think that is a good sign. We have a saying in France that we are floating on a small cloud. We are enjoying the dream with this horse. It's so nice to dream.”

Pedigree Notes

Beauvatier, a €160,000 Arqana August purchase and kin to a yearling filly by Siyouni {Fr}), is the first of two foals produced by Listed Prix de Thiberville runner-up Enchanting Skies (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), herself a sale-topping €500,000 Baden-Baden September yearling when sold by Ronald Rauscher to Peter and Ross Doyle, on behalf of Mayfair Speculators, in 2016. His dam is one of four black-type performers out of Listed Kolner Fruhjahrs-Stuten-Preis third Estefania (Ger) (Acatenango {Ger}), the quartet headed by G1 Preis von Europa victor Empoli (Ger) (Halling). Estefania is out of a multiple-winning half to MG1SW G2 German 1000 Guineas and G2 Preis der Diana (German Oaks) heroine Elle Danzig (Ger) (Roi Danzig).
