Baoma Corporation's Eda (Munnings), making her first start since winning the GI Starlet S. last December, went wire-to-wire to win the GIII Santa Ysabel S. by a half-length over her late-closing stablemate Under the Stars (Pioneerof the Nile) at Santa Anita Sunday. Sent off at 3-1, Eda stepped right out to the early lead as even-money favorite Under the Stars sat just off her flank while racing three wide down the backstretch with Ain't Easy (Into Mischief) to her inside. Jockey Juan Hernandez asked Eda for more approaching the quarter-pole as Under the Stars and Ain't Easy started their rallies on either side of the pacesetter. She began inching away and had a two-length advantage with a furlong to run, but Under the Stars was closing late only to run out of real estate on the wire. With trainer Bob Baffert still banned from starting horses at Churchill Downs, neither the winner nor the runner-up were early nominations to the GI Kentucky Oaks and neither were able to earn the Santa Ysabel's qualifying Oaks points.

Eda, second in the GII Sorrento S. while still a maiden, was fifth after attending a hot pace in the Sept. 5 GI Del Mar Debutante, but came back to graduate with a front-running tally in the Oct. 24 Anoakia S. She added a win in the Nov. 13 Desi Arnaz S. before stretching out to 1 1/16 miles to win the Starlet in her juvenile finale.

Pedigree Notes:

Breeder Nate McCauley purchased Show Me, a half-sister to graded winner Aegean (Northern Afleet), for $24,000 at the 2018 Fasig-Tipton February sale and sent her to Coolmore's Munnings. The mare's first foal is Eda and she also has a yearling filly by Karakontie (Jpn). She sold to Camas Park Stud while in foal to Munnings for $535,000 at last year's Fasig-Tipton November sale.

Eddie Woods's Quarter Pole Enterprises purchased Eda for $240,000 at the 2020 Keeneland September sale and resold her to the $550,000 bid of bloodstock agent Donato Lanni at the 2021 OBS March sale.

Eda had no trouble with a short field of four others in the Desi Arnaz Stakes at Del Mar Thoroughbred Club in Del Mar, Calif. She pressed her pace-setting stablemate Under the Stars, took the lead coming out of the far turn, and drew away in the stretch to win by 4 1/4 lengths.

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

Coming into the Desi Arnaz, the 2-year-old daughter of Munnings had two victories in her previous four starts, including a last-out win in the Anoakia at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, Calif., on Oct. 24. In Saturday's stakes, the Bob Baffert trainee took up position just off stablemate Under the Stars, who held a half-length advantage into the far turn.

Coming into the Del Mar stretch, Eda took over the lead, with Tonito's looming on her outside. The Doug O'Neill trainee challenged briefly, but Eda was too much for her, pulling away to win easily. Under the Stars was third, with Lady T, who had an awkward trip after veering toward the rail early in the race, and Endless Thirst rounding out the field.

The final time for the 6 1/2 furlongs was 1:15.53. Find this race's chart here.

Eda paid $2.40, $2.20, and $2.10. Tonito's paid $5.00 and $3.80. Under the Stars paid $2.40.

“She broke well and had good speed. When we turned for home and a horse came up outside us, I shook her up. Then she responded with a good kick,” jockey Flavien Prat said after the race.

“Actually, (Flavien) Prat thought this was the best race she has run. I really thought she relaxed well. I thought my other horse (Under the Stars) was going to be farther back but she broke well and maybe I had her a little too sharp. It was kind of a last minute decision to run Eda here because we also plan to run her back in the Starlet but I loved the way she was able to relax and then kick away clear. Prat doesn't say much, but he was really impressed with her,” Baffert told the Del Mar Press Office after the Desi Arnaz.

Bred in Kentucky by Nathan McCauley, Eda is out of the Lemon Drop Kid mare Show Me. She is owned by Baoma Corporation. The 2-year-old filly was consigned by Eddie Woods and purchased by Donato Lanni, agent, for $550,000 at the 2021 Ocala Breeders' Sales Company March Sale of Two-Year-Olds In Training. With her win in the Desi Arnaz, Eda has three wins in five starts for career earnings of $190,000.

Heavily-favored Enbarr made his first victory a stakes success, rallying past stablemate Montebello in the final eighth of a mile to capture the $75,000 Capote Saturday at Los Alamitos Race Course in Cypress, Calif.

Trained by Hall of Famer Bob Baffert for Baoma Corporation, the 2-year-old Brody's Cause colt sat third behind the early pace set by Montebello, the 3-2 second choice, and 12-1 shot Olympic Legend, steered outside entering the stretch and went on to win by a comfortable one length in 1:16.33 for the 6 ½ furlongs.

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

Second behind stablemate – and eventual Del Mar Futurity winner – Pinehurst in his debut Aug. 1, Enbarr, who was ridden by Drayden Van Dyke, paid $2.80 and $2.10 as the 2-5 choice. There was no show wagering after Rhetoric, who is also trained by Baffert, and Fascinated were scratched earlier in the day.

Montebello, who finished eight lengths clear of Olympic Legend, returned $2.10. It was the Curlin colt's second consecutive runner-up finish in a stakes. The New York bred completed the exacta behind Senbei in the Funny Cide Aug. 27 at Saratoga.

Although a 1-2 finish for the stable was the desired result, the race didn't play out exactly as assistant trainer Mike Marlow thought it would.

“We thought Enbarr would be showing the way early and Montebello would be a couple of lengths off him,'' he said. “They broke and that's how it ended up with Montebello in front and Enbarr tracking.

“They're both good horses. I think Montebello is going to be better around two turns. He's got that high cruising speed while Enbarr is just a fast horse.''

Van Dyke, who was aboard Enbarr for the first time, was impressed with the colt purchased for $200,000 as a yearling.

“I just played the break and when (Montebello) showed more speed I let my horse relax,'' he said. “He gave me a good run around the turn and then really kicked into gear at the top of the stretch when he switched leads. He was just idling at the end once he got past.''

Out of the Warrior's Reward mare Star of Gallantry, Enbarr increased his earnings to $57,500.

Racing resumes Sunday at Los Alamitos. Post time is 1 p.m.

The program is highlighted by a pair of stakes – the $100,000 Los Alamitos Special for older horses at 1 1/16 miles and the $75,000 Dark Mirage for older fillies and mares at one mile.

The Special is the fifth of nine races while the Dark Mirage is the eighth.

Private Mission added graded stakes winner to her resume with her win in the Grade 3 Torrey Pines at Del Mar Thoroughbred Club in Del Mar, Calif. Ridden by leading jockey Flavien Prat, the daughter of Into Mischief took the lead entering the far turn and sailed away to an easy 6 1/2-length victory for owner Baoma Corporation and trainer Bob Baffert.

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

Breaking from the outside post, Prat held Private Mission a half-length off of early leader Lady Mystify as the Peter Eurton-trained filly logged fractions of :22.28 for the first quarter-mile and :46.71 for the half-mile. As the field of seven rounded the final turn, Private Mission took over, moving past Lady Mystify under a hand ride from Prat. Into the stretch, she stretched her advantage out with ease, the field unable able to mount any serious challenge. I'm So Anna was second and Forest Caraway took third. Lisette, Lady Mystify, Day Plan, and Jeanne B rounded out the field.

The final time for the one-mile Torrey Pine was 1:37.89. Find this race's chart here.

Private Mission paid $4.00, $3.20, and $2.20. I'm So Anna paid $6.00 and $2.80. Forest Caraway paid $2.10.

“She broke really well from the gate and put me right into the race. She got a little aggressive down the backstretch, so I gave her a little bit of a breather until the turn for home,” Flavien Prat said after the race. “When I asked her, she really dug in and got it done. She won pretty easily.”

“We didn't know what she was going to do, but we always thought she could run long. This was a good spot and she passed the route test. That's very important. That's where all the money is,” Baffert commented after the Torrey Pines.

Bred in Kentucky by Mount Brilliant Broodmares, Private Missions is by leading sire Into Mischief out of the Unbridled mare Private Gift. Consigned by Lane's End, Baoma Corporation, the nom du course for Charles Chu, paid $750,000 for Private Mission at the 2019 Fasig-Tipton New York Saratoga Select Yearling Sale. With three wins in four lifetime starts, the 3-year-old filly has career earnings of $136,800.
