Nineteen National Hunt stallions will participate in the Thoroughbred Breeders' Association (TBA) NH Stallion Showcase at the Goffs UK sales complex in Doncaster on Tuesday, Jan. 24. This coincides with the first day of the Goffs UK January Sale.

All stallions will be available to view between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. that day. Among the participating stallions are dual group winner Bangkok (Ire), Arc hero Golden Horn (GB), G1 St Leger hero Logician (GB), Group 1 winner Planteur (Ire), and G1 Irish Derby victor Jack Hobbs (GB).

A nomination to each of the stallions which have been nominated to the 2023 Elite NH Mares' Scheme and those on show at the National Hunt Showcase has been donated by the stallion's owners for an online silent auction, which will begin on Monday, Jan. 23 and will end on Thursday, Jan. 26. All funds raised by the silent auction will support the TBA's National Hunt activities.

TBA Chief Executive Claire Sheppard said, “This popular event brings together National Hunt breeders from across the country and we welcome anyone interested in becoming involved in the industry, whether as a breeder or as a career path, to view the stallions and meet with the TBA team who will be on hand to discuss any queries or questions.

“We remain thankful to Goffs UK, the participating stallion studs and TBA NH Committee for their ongoing support.”

DahlBury was announced as the new sponsor for the 1 1/2-mile G1 Coronation Cup at Epsom Downs on Ladies Day, June 3. The vision of owner/breeder Simon Davies, Chief Executive Officer of the global telecommunications firm Spectra Group (UK) Ltd., DahlBury's stallion roster is based at Chapel Stud in Worcestershire. Middle distance and staying horses for both the Flat and National Hunt are the focus of the stud, which stands Planteur (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}), Walzertakt (Ger) (Montjeu {Ire}), and Bangkok (Ire) (Australia {GB}).

Simon Davies said, “We are delighted to be sponsoring the Coronation Cup, which is one of the top races of its kind and is the ideal showcase of what we're trying to achieve with DahlBury, we want to help break the myth that middle-distance racehorses can't retire to stud, stand under both codes and be commercial.

“We're investing in British Thoroughbreds, and we hope that our operation will help to challenge some of the currently-held notions around 'dual-purpose' sires. We believe that middle-distance sires have a lot more to offer in this country, you only have to look at the success that they are having in Japan at the moment.

“Planteur has had an incredibly successful couple of years on the back of the successes of Trueshan and his other stakes winners and we hope that this venture is the start of something really exciting for British racing.”

Phil White, London Regional Director at The Jockey Club, added of the 120th edition of the historic race, “We're delighted to have DahlBury on board as sponsor for the G1 Coronation Cup, in what is a historic year both for Epsom Downs and for racing as a whole.

“We are honoured that Her Majesty The Queen has chosen to be at The Cazoo Derby during the central weekend for the celebrations of her historic reign, which we are hoping will put more eyes than ever before on this fantastic sport.

“DahlBury has a fantastic vision for how they can contribute to British racing and breeding, and it is fitting that they have chosen to sponsor the Coronation Cup, which is one of the premier middle-distance races in the calendar.

“There have been some fantastic winners of this race over the years, and we hope that this partnership will act as a platform for further success in this division down the line.”

Nestled near the Malvern Hills in the west of England is Chapel Stud, a 70-acre stud farm owned and managed by Roisin Close. As well as offering services from boarding, sales preparation to breaking and pre-training the stud now boasts a dual-purpose stallion roster with new recruits Walzertakt (Ger) and Bangkok (Ire) joining the stud's three existing and established stallions, Planteur (Ire), Indian Haven (GB) and Hellvelyn (GB). Close formerly owned Bucklands Farm and Stud but when the business outgrew the facilities at that farm a move was needed.

“Chapel Stud is actually an extension, or a following on from Bucklands Farm,” said Close. “We outgrew the farm, so we needed to find a new premises. We found a farm about half an hour north of where Bucklands was and over the last three years we've slowly been putting in all the relevant needs for horses. I have all sorts of plans going forward but at the moment it is serving every purpose that we need it to serve.”

Prior to owning her own stud, Close gained experience across the world with time spent at Taylor Made Farm in Kentucky and a 13-year stint at Tweenhills Stud. Along the way she has gained valuable friendships and appreciates the amount of support she has had throughout her career and with setting up her enterprise.

“I'm so lucky that along the way everyone has supported me and backed me and allowed me to get where I am,” said Close. “That includes people I've worked for, people I've worked alongside, my family, my friends, they have all allowed me to get where I am.”

Having previously owned stallions outright Close knows the financial and physical demands that are required to make a horse successful. Three of the stallions, Planteur, Bangkok and Walzertakt, calling Chapel Stud home are owned by Simon Davies and for Close having a team member like Davies is not lost on her.

“With the sprint stallions that I stood beforehand everything was always on a budget,” Close said. “Simon has really gone in in a big way, from advertising to promotions and or sponsorship. It's been really lovely to deal with someone that has that same kind of passion and really wants to make a success of things.”

Spearheading the stallion roster is Planteur, a horse who started his stud career with Al Shaqab and was purchased by Davies in 2020. Trueshan (Fr) is the stallion's classiest offspring and has become a staying star for trainer Alan King. Aside from that multiple group winner, Planteur is also the sire of G2 winner Road To Arc (Fr) and is operating just shy of 58% winners to runners.

Davies has added National Hunt stallion Walzertakt to his bloodstock portfolio at Chapel Stud having purchased him from Haras de la Croix Sonnet. The German-bred Group 2 winner is bred along similar lines to Camelot (Ire), being by Montjeu (Ire) out of the Kingmambo (USA) mare Walzerkoenigin (USA) and has yet to be tested with his eldest progeny only being four.

Coming in as a dual-purpose stallion is Bangkok who is standing his first season at stud this year having previously been quite a talking-horse for King Power Racing.

“He's a very attractive, quality son of Australia (GB) out of a blue hen mare, Tanaghum (GB),” said Close of the bay horse. “He's a half-brother to Group 1 winner Matterhorn (Ire) and his half-sister Mujarah (Ire) is the dam of Ribchester (Ire). Actually, all of Simon's stallions have looks and temperament as well as an excellent pedigree.”

The six-time winner has run over seven furlongs to a mile and a quarter and raced from the age of two to five with international trips under his belt too.

“Andrew Balding, who trained him, said 'he was a tough, sound and consistent horse with a stallion's pedigree,' ” Close remarked. “He's absolutely the type of horse that people should be embracing to breed racehorses. He should be able to breed you a top-quality horse across the board.”

With a bonus scheme available to those breeders who breed his first 2-year-old winner and his first black-type 2-year-old winner it is no wonder that Close is bullish about the type of horse she envisions Bangkok could sire stating that he is a horse who offers “toughness and soundness.”

While new stallions bring excitement to any stud farm, Close has a sparkle in her eye talking about her boys new and old with Hellvelyn getting a special mention. With something on offer for everyone, Chapel Stud could continue to grow in stature much like the hills that surround its pastures.

A new stallion nomination initiative, 'Pick a Nom', was launched by Chapel Stud on Thursday. The initiative applies to Chapel Stud stallions Bangkok (Ire) (Australia {GB}), Planteur (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}), and Walzertakt (Ger) (Montjeu {Ire}). It offers from 10% to 50% discounts on the stallions' Standard Stud Fee (FFR) of £4,000 for Planteur, £3,000 for Bangkok, and £2,500 for Walzertakt. Chapel Stud is also offering a £300 travel voucher for mares traveling more than 200 miles to the stud. For more information, please visit the Chapel Stud website. There will also be a stallion parade at Chapel Stud on Dec. 10 and 11 from 9:30 a.m. to noon prior to racing at Cheltenham. Guests are welcome to view the stallions and enjoy drinks and brunch. To RSVP, please click here.

Simon Davies, owner of the stallions, said, “We appreciate that breeders, as our clients, have very different needs and budgets, and therefore wanted to offer a choice with our stallion nomination terms as well as ensuring value options for everyone.

“The variety of choice is also reflected in the stallions standing at Chapel Stud, with Planteur, who has winners most days led by the incredible Trueshan, new sire Bangkok, an extremely well-bred son of Australia and tremendously tough racehorse, and Walzertakt being by Montjeu out of a Kingmambo mare providing National Hunt breeders with the chance of using this cross.”

Chapel Stud Director, Roisin Close, said, “I am delighted to be working with Simon Davies to offer fantastic stallions at very affordable prices, and welcome visitors to view the stallions at Chapel Stud over the forthcoming months.”

Multiple group winner Bangkok (Ire) (Australia {GB}–Tanaghum {GB}, by Darshaan {GB}) has been retired to Chapel Stud in the UK for 2022. A fee will be announced at a later date for the dual-purpose stallion. The bay, who was bred by Barronstown Stud, will stand at Chapel on behalf of owner/breeder Simon Davies. The deal was brokered by Billy Jackson-Stops of JS Bloodstock Consultancy.

A 500,000gns Tattersalls October Book 1 yearling, Bangkok raced in the colours of King Power Racing. Trained by Andrew Balding, his best win was in the 2021 G2 Sky Bet York S., while he also scored in the G3 Bet365 Classic Trial in 2019 and two editions of the Listed Betway Winter Derby Trial (2020/21). The son of the stakes-placed Tanaghum also placed three more times at group level and retires with a mark of 24-6-6-1 and earnings of $926,107.

Chapel Stud Director Roisin Close said, “I am delighted to be standing Bangkok on behalf of Simon Davies, Welsh Marches Stud. He is an exciting addition to both Chapel Stud and the British stallion ranks. Bangkok was a high-class, tough, and consistent multiple stakes winner, and had an excellent career over four seasons. He is undeniably attractive with great presence and conformation, all backed up by an outstanding pedigree.”

Simon Davies added, “We are extremely excited to add Bangkok to stand alongside Planteur (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}) at Chapel Stud. He was an immensely tough and sound racehorse and as the only son of Australia to stand in Britain will complement Planteur perfectly and give breeders another quality option next year.”

The April foal is a half-brother to Group 1 winner Matterhorn (Ire) (Raven's Pass), Group 3 winner Tactic (GB), stakes winner Yaazy (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}), who also placed twice at the Group 3 level, and the stakes-placed Zahoo (Ire) (Nayef). Another half-sister produced top European miler and four-time Group 1 winner Ribchester (Ire) (Iffraaj {GB}). His second dam Mehthaaf (Nureyev) landed the G1 Irish 1000 Guineas.

Andrew Balding said, “Bangkok has been a pleasure to train for the last four seasons. His class has enabled him to achieve results at a variety of distances and his courage and constitution are second to none. He has the ability, looks and temperament to be a top-class performer at stud, and we will certainly be supporting him with mares.”

The G1 Dubai Sheema Classic is a potential March target for G1 St Leger second Berkshire Rocco (Fr) (Sir Percy {GB}) according to trainer Andrew Balding. Since taking the Listed Noel Murless S. in October, the colt returned to be the runner-up in the H H the Amir Trophy in Qatar on Feb. 20.

“He ran a smashing race,” said Balding. “It was his first run for a while, and he's entitled to come on for that. All being well, he might head towards Meydan for the Sheema Classic. He's effective at a mile and a half and further, and is just a great horse to have in the yard.”

Stablemate Spanish Mission (Noble Mission {GB}) is also a possible candidate for the Dubai World Cup meeting on Mar. 27. the 2020 G2 Doncaster Cup S. winner was last seen running second in the Red Sea Turf H. at Riyadh.

“He ran with great credit and he too might end up going to Dubai for the [G2] Dubai Gold Cup,” said Balding.

The third Balding trainee, Bangkok (Ire) (Australia {GB}) a Group 3 winner earlier in his career and a winner of the Listed Winter Derby Trial S. two back, was eighth in the Feb. 20 $20-million Saudi Cup. The bay is set for start in the Apr. 2 All-Weather Championship Finals at Lingfield.

“He's probably not quite as good as the others, which is obvious, but he won some really good prize-money and is back here and bouncing,” said Balding. “There were great rewards up for grabs, and that was the main reason we ran. The rewards were there as long as he could finish in the first 10, and he did that and has done us proud. He will more than likely head to Lingfield for Good Friday.”

Juddmonte’s Enable (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) is set for a stern test on her eagerly-awaited return to the track on Sunday, with Ghaiyyath (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) one of her key rivals in an eight-strong entry for the G1 Coral-Eclipse at Sandown. The dual Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe winner is set to reappear for the first time since she lost her 12-race unbeaten sequence when runner-up to Waldgeist (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) in pursuit of her hat-trick in Paris last October.

John Gosden’s brilliant mare will be defending her Sandown crown, having begun her campaign last summer with an odds-on victory in the Eclipse. At six, she is due to face a tough challenger in Charlie Appleby’s Ghaiyyath–a year her junior and a dual winner since finishing only 10th of 12 at ParisLongchamp last October. Ghaiyyath made virtually all for emphatic victories in the G3 Dubai Millennium S. at Meydan and then the re-routed G1 Coronation Cup at Newmarket earlier this month. William Buick is set to team up with the Dubawi horse again and he is anticipating a thorough test for his mount.

Buick said, “It is obviously a tough race, but he is a horse I’m looking forward to riding again as he was great at Newmarket last time in the Coronation Cup. It looks like a real highlight, but that is the Eclipse for you. It has been billed as that before and it is a great race. I know it is only a small field, but it is a very select field and there are world champions in there. This could be the race of the season.”

Among Ghaiyyath and Enable’s potential opponents at Sandown are the mare’s stablemate Lord North (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), an impressive winner of the G1 Prince of Wales’s S. at Royal Ascot. Adding further intrigue is the Japanese mare Deirdre (Jpn) (Harbinger {GB), winner of the G1 Nassau S. last season. Aidan O’Brien’s chief hope is last year’s G1 Juddmonte International winner Japan (GB) (Galileo {Ire}), who was below-par at Ascot on his reappearance, and he may be joined by stablemate Magic Wand (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). Regal Reality (GB) (Intello {Ger}) and Bangkok (Ire) (Australia {GB}) complete the field.
