DR ZEMPF (GB) (g, 4, Dark Angel {Ire}–Souvenir Delondres {Fr} {GSW-Fr, $138,754}, by Siyouni {Fr}), narrowly second in the 2021 G1 Phoenix S. while under the care of Ger Lyons, won the Listed Leopardstown 2000 Guineas Trial on seasonal debut last April before adding the G3 Ballycorus S. two starts later. Last seen finishing down the field behind subsequent GI Breeders' Cup Mile third Kinross (GB) (Kingman {GB}) in the G2 City of York S. last August and making his U.S. debut as a first-time gelding and with Lasix, the 'TDN Rising Star' secured a foothold at the inside from fifth while tugging a bit against Tyler Gaffalione. Traveling strongly between rivals on the turn, Dr Zempf–off at a tantalizing 9-5–was slipped a bit of rein three abreast as the field neared the stretch, took command approaching the eighth pole and rolled home to score with consummate ease. “He broke alertly; he has great tactical speed and put me in a good spot throughout,” the winning rider commented. “He was just kind of taking me around there. When the spot opened up, I just chirped at him and he took it. Down the lane he was just checking everything out, just looking around. I had plenty of horse left.” Pacesetting Chuck Willis (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) held on for seond. Dr Zempf has a 3-year-old half-sister named Visiting Hours (GB) (Kingman {GB}) and a 2-year-old half-brother Phoenix Passion (Ire) (Too Darn Hot {GB}), that was purchased by Opulence Thoroughbreds for 125,000gns at last year's Tattersalls October Sale.
