Isle of Jura (GB) (New Approach {Ire}) found his best stride entering the final 200 metres and ran out a comfortable winner of Friday's $200,000 Listed King's Cup to secure the 'Triple Crown' for Sheikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa's Victorious Racing and trainer George Scott.

Winner of a Bahrain Turf Series race Dec. 8 and second in another three weeks later, Isle of Jura saw his rating rise out of the eligibility range for those valuable handicaps and made his next start in the Listed Crown Prince's Cup Feb. 2. Duly obliging there for a first black-type success, he scooped the $135,000 Sheikh Nasser Bin Hamad Al Khalifa Cup a fortnight later and was going for the sweep in the King's Cup.

The commonly owned, but Fawzi Nass-trained Rollajam (Ire) (Belardo {Ire}), ostensibly a pacemaker for Isle of Jura, bombed the start, but rolled forward with a rush to take up the running and opened a double-digit margin on his rivals down the back. Isle of Jura raced in about fifth position and one off the fence with cover, but still had plenty of ground to make up on the leader turning in. The hulking bay took time to hit top gear, but began to bridge the gap in earnest approaching the final furlong and pulled clear from there as Sovereign Spirit (GB) (Le Havre {Ire}) and Panning for Gold (Ire) (Galileo Gold {GB}) ran on for the minor prizes.

“This ranks as the highlight of my career to date, miles ahead of anything else. It's unbelievable,” the winning trainer commented. “The King's Cup is the pinnacle of racing here in Bahrain. What a wonderful horse, he really is a trier.”

Added jockey Callum Shepherd: “What a magic winter this horse has given us and for it to culminate in this race is huge. He's had to overcome adversity here, being virtually knocked over on the first bend. I'm enormously grateful to His Highness Sheikh Nasser, I am so pleased we could do this for him. It was his ambition to win the three races, the 'Triple Crown', and it takes some doing.

“I'd also like to give enormous credit to Rosie Jessop who's ridden him every day out here and the girls who have looked after him. They have carried out and implemented George's plans to the letter and they have been faultless in doing so.”

Said Jessop, who has jumped aboard Isle of Jura in his work over the course of the last three months: “I am going to miss him dearly. He's been the life and soul of my season this year. I'm just so happy and he's made it a magical time for us.”

Isle of Jura returns to Europe for a pattern campaign over the summer.

The well-related Isle of Jura is out of a daughter of French listed-winning 2002 G1 Pouliches runner-up Firth of Lorne (Ire) (Danehill), whose son Master of the Seas (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) led home a Godolphin 1-2 in last year's GI Breeders' Cup Mile. She is also the dam of the stakes-winning and G1 St James's Palace S. second Latharnach (Iffraaj {GB}) and Etive (Elusive Quality), a listed winner in Germany. This is also the family of Just Fine (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), popular winner of the G1 Metropolitan H. at Randwick last September. Falls of Lora is also represented by a 2-year-old Night of Thunder (Ire) colt and a yearling colt by Dubawi.

Real World Back To Winning Ways

It had been a stretch of 12 consecutive outs for Godolphin's classy Real World (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) dating back to his victory in the 2022 G2 Zabeel Mile at Meydan. The 7-year-old earned his first placing since when third to Brave Emperor (Ire) (Sioux Nation) in the Irish Thoroughbred Marketing Cup in Qatar Feb. 17 and snapped the skid with an authoritative victory in Friday's $80,000 Listed Al Methaq Mile.

Ridden forward by Kevin Stott, the veteran went to the front with better than 200 metres to travel and proved not for catching from there, defeating Wowzers (GB) (Kodiac {GB}) by a comfortable 2 1/2-length margin.

“Last time Real World ran well in Doha in Qatar, and then he worked very well last week and back at a mile, which is the best trip for him, I was confident he would run well. That was good to see,” said trainer Saeed bin Suroor.

Three British-trained runners, plus two in the Godolphin blue, feature in a nine-strong field for the Listed Crown Prince's Cup (Sponsored by Cebarco) at the Rashid Equestrian and Horseracing Club on Friday, February 2.

Charlie Appleby, who won the race in 2023 with Warren Point (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), saddles a leading contender again this year in the shape of the four-year-old Local Dynasty (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), who was last seen running out an emphatic winner of a handicap at Meydan. His vanquished rivals on that occasion included the same owner's Passion And Glory (Ire) (Cape Cross {Ire}), who will be back in familiar surroundings in Bahrain as he tries to reverse the form in the Crown Prince's Cup. Trained by Saeed Bin Suroor, Passion And Glory was second in the G3 Bahrain International Trophy in 2022 before winning the Listed His Majesty The King's Cup the following year.

The British challenge is made up of three horses who will also be familiar to local racegoers having taken part in the Bahrain Turf Series during the winter. The Ian Williams-trained Duc De Kent (Fr) (Zelzal {Fr}) has been beaten in his two starts, but Isle Of Jura (GB) (New Approach {Ire}) and Lucander (Ire) (Footstepsinthesand {GB}) have both been among the winners for George Scott and George Baker, respectively. Lucander came out on top by a short head when the pair met most recently, but Isle Of Jura is better off at the weights in the Crown Prince's Cup, leaving Scott optimistic of another bold showing in the familiar colours of His Highness Shaikh Nasser's Victorious Racing.

“Isle Of Jura has not surprised me in terms of how well he has done in Bahrain,” said Scott. “He has really thrived in the conditions and the lovely fast ground was always going to suit him.

“The plan was always to progress from the Bahrain Turf Series to the Cup races and this [2000m] is his distance, so I am very hopeful of a big run. It would mean a great deal to His Highness Shaikh Nasser to win a race as prestigious as the Crown Prince's Cup.”

Rollajam (Ire) (Belardo {Ire}) will also sport the silks of Victorious Racing and is one of two runners for leading local trainer Fawzi Nass along with Bahrain Turf Series winner Zagato (GB) (Frankel {GB}). The home defence is completed by Allan Smith's American Flag (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) and the Jaber Ramadhan-trained Sovereign Spirit (GB) (Le Havre {Ire}) on another significant day in the Bahrain racing calendar, with two Bahrain Turf Series races and the Bahrain Derby and Bahrain Oaks also featuring on the card.

The declared runners for the 2024 Crown Prince's Cup can be found here.

Andy Waitt has been named as the new clerk of the course for the Bahrain Turf Club. He replaces Neil Mackenzie Ross.

Yusuf Buheji, CEO of the Bahrain Turf Club said, “We are delighted to welcome Andy to the team at the Rashid Equestrian & Horseracing Club. The Club considers the provision of a first-class racing surface to be fundamental to the growth of horseracing in Bahrain, not only from the perspective of attracting international horses but also in terms of raising the standards of our domestic horse population.

“We have made a significant investment in the facilities, developing two separate turf tracks, as well as our extensive training resources, to ensure we provide the best quality surface for all horses and riders.

“Andy has a lot of experience from his time working in England and shares our ambition for the future. Our thanks to Neil Mackenzie Ross for his significant contribution during his nine years working for the Club.”

Previously based at Chelmsford City Racecourse, Waitt began his career in racing at Sandown Park. Later based at Lingfield Park as head groundsman and estates manager, he qualified for clerk of the course in 2005, and held that role at Great Leighs from 2008-2009. He returned to that track to oversee its re-opening as Chelmsford City in 2015.

Waitt said, “I was attracted to the role by the opportunity to work for a progressive racing jurisdiction with long-term plans. I am very much looking forward to the Bahrain International Trophy in November and then the Bahrain Turf Series, which runs from December through to February. I am also thoroughly enjoying getting to know the friendly and accommodating people of Bahrain.”

The BTC hosts the $1-million G2 Bahrain International Trophy every November, as well as The Listed Crown Prince's Cup and Listed The King's Cup in February and March, respectively.

This year's edition of the G2 Bahrain International Trophy will feature an increased purse of $1 million, the Bahrain Turf Club announced on Thursday.

The highest profile race in the kingdom, the race was promoted to Group 2 level by the Asian Pattern Committee recently. It was won in 2022 by Dubai Future (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) for trainer Saeed bin Suroor and Godolphin.

His Highness Shaikh Isa Bin Salman Bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Chairman of the Rashid Equestrian & Horseracing Club, said, “The Bahrain International Trophy is our showpiece event and its promotion to Group 2 status represents another significant step in growing the Kingdom's standing on the international racing stage.

“We are looking forward to staging the best horseracing event to date and welcoming runners from all over the world to Bahrain.”

The addition of the purse boost for the Bahrain International Trophy is part of the all-round investment programme in the country with will boast record purses for the 2023-24 season. All three Bahraini listed races, the Crown Prince's Cup, the King's Cup and the Al Methaq Mile, have all received purse hikes, as has the 10-race Bahrain Turf Series with each race worth $80,000 (£65,000).

Yusuf Buheji, CEO of the Bahrain Turf Club added, “We are delighted to announce the staging of the first $1-million race in Bahrain, along with increases in the value of all our Pattern races, the Bahrain Turf Series and our wider domestic programme.

“In addition to increases in prize money, we continue to invest in our racing and training facilities, as well as our integrity standards. Through these initiatives, as well as our partnerships and sponsorship portfolio, the aim is to further raise the standard of racing in Bahrain and welcome more international visitors.”

Jockey Tom Marquand has renewed his sponsorship contract with the Bahrain Turf Club for a further year, the organisation announced Wednesday.

Ed Veale, Director of Racing and International Relations at the Bahrain Turf Club, said: “Tom's profile makes him a perfect fit for the Bahrain Turf Club, particularly on account of his growing international reputation. He is an excellent role model for the sport and someone that young people look up to and admire.

Marquand added: “I am delighted and grateful to extend my sponsorship with Bahrain. After finishing joint second in the Flat Jockeys Championship in 2022, my goal is to continue to improve and ride more winners around the world.”

Marquand, who is due to visit Bahrain to race ride in the coming season, will be working in tandem with the Bahrain Turf Club on their social media platforms and is expected to be in action on day one of the Boodles July Festival at Newmarket, a day on which all three group races are sponsored by the Kingdom of Bahrain.

Shaikh Salman bin Rashed Al Khalifa, Bahrain Turf Club High Committee Representative, International Racing, added: “Our sponsorship on the first day of the July Festival provides a great opportunity to showcase the Kingdom of Bahrain and it is an honour to be associated with the three group races run that afternoon, the Bahrain Trophy, the July S. and the Princess of Wales's S. We will be working with Tom to promote the day and Bahrain's support for British racing.”

Godolphin's Passion And Glory (Ire) (Cape Cross {Ire}) returned to Bahrain after finishing second in the G3 Bahrain International Trophy on Nov. 18 to win the Listed His Majesty The King's Cup at the Bahrain Equestrian Club on Friday. The 7-year-old gelding is trained by Saeed bin Suroor and was ridden by Daniel Tudhope. Passion And Glory got the better of the Appleby-trained First Ruler (GB) (Dubawi [Ire]) to give Godolphin a one-two finish.

Bin Suroor said, “It was a great result to see Passion And Glory win here. He is a proven horse and his jockey looked after him. If you look back at his wins, he likes going right-handed and that is why we brought him here.” Earlier on the card, the 6-year-old gelding Byline (GB) (Muhaarar {GB}) was victorious in the Listed Al Methaq Mile after an eighth in Saudi Arabia in the G3 Neom Turf Cup two weeks ago. The Allen Smith trainee was ridden by Gerald Mosse, which gave the trainer and owners Al Adiyat Racing a treble on the day.

His Highness Shaikh Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa, Chairman of The Bahrain Turf Club said, “Today we have witnessed another memorable renewal of His Majesty The King's Cup. Congratulations to Godolphin, to trainer Saeed bin Suroor and to jockey Danny Tudhope following their success with Passion And Glory.

“It is testament to the growth and development of the sport that horseracing in Bahrain now regularly attracts world-class horses and world-renowned trainers and jockeys such as Saeed bin Suroor and Danny Tudhope. And I would like to congratulate His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum on his success with Passion And Glory and thank him for his on-going support of racing in the Kingdom.

“As shown by today's racing, this season we have taken another step towards fulfilling our ambition to establish Bahrain as a home for top-class international horseracing. I would like to take this opportunity to thank not only our overseas visitors but also the Kingdom's own jockeys, trainers and owners, without whom such progress would not be possible.”

The final pair of £60,000 Bahrain Turf Series races of the season take place on Friday, and include a total of 12 European entries. Get It (GB) (Twilight Son {GB}) can bookend a successful Turf Series for trainer George Baker with victory in the Al Sakhir Cup.

“Get It has been a star for us,” said Baker. “He was unlucky on his first run in Bahrain and I think he bumped into one in Mobaadel (Speightstown) on his most recent start. It was a fantastic run and Andrea [Atzeni] was very keen to get back on him on Friday. We couldn't be happier with how we have him.”

Meanwhile, Hugo Palmer is hopeful for a big run from Box To Box (Ire) in The Vision 2030 Cup. The son of Kodiac (GB) ran a promising race on his Bahraini debut at the start of December, but disappointed next out.

“Despite a wide draw, we're happy with Box To Box,” he said. “We've deliberately given him a good break and we're hoping he can step forward off a lower mark.”

Box To Box is one of eight European runners entered. Other notable contenders include What's The Story (GB) (Harbour Watch {Ire}), Marie's Diamond (GB) (Footstepsinthesand {GB}) and Inigo Jones (GB) (New Approach {Ire}).

George Baker and David O'Meara celebrated valuable, big-race success with a victory apiece on the opening day of the 2022-23 Bahrain Turf Series. Locally trained horses won nine of the 10 races in last season's Bahrain Turf Series, but the opening race of this season, the Al Muharraq Cup, went the way of Lucander (Ire) (Footstepsinthesand {GB}) with Pat Cosgrove aboard.

Now trained by Baker, Lucander was last seen when finishing eight in the Cambridgeshire H. at Newmarket for Ralph Beckett. Making his first start for connections, the gelding stormed clear of his rivals to win by 5 1/2 lengths with What A Welcome (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) in second and Arctic Emperor (GB) (Territories {Ire}) in third.

In the second Bahrain Turf Series race of the day, the £60,000 Al Manama Cup, the O'Meara-trained Nomadic Empire (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) was a popular winner for local owner Al Mohamediya Racing. Their retained rider Neil Callan, who won two Bahrain Turf Series races last season, and his mount got the better of Instinctive Move (GB) (Showcasing {GB}) in the end. This was O'Meara's first runner in Bahrain since Lord Glitters (Fr) (Whipper)'s memorable triumph in the 2021 G3 Bahrain International Trophy.

Hosted by the Bahrain Turf Club, the Bahrain Turf Series runs through Mar. 18, 2023.

SAKHIR, Bahrain–It has been a big year for Harry Davies. Having made his first appearance under rules aboard Battered (GB) for Hugo Palmer at Southwell on January 11, Britain's fastest-rising apprentice is currently engaged in his first overseas riding job at the Bahrain Turf Club, where he is working for leading trainer Allan Smith.

In the weighing-room, Davies is as fresh-faced as they come, but then that's no surprise as he is still only 17. In conversation, however, he has the maturity and quiet confidence of someone twice his age. That too should perhaps not be surprising. Though Davies was only granted his licence a year ago, he is no stranger to work-riding or race-riding.

He started out at the tender age of 10, a mere slip of a boy using his innate skill rather than strength on Newmarket Heath while riding out for Hugo Palmer, to whom his mother Angie Shea is assistant trainer. From that precocious start, he was twice crowned pony racing champion in the UK, and was then taken under the wing of Andrew and Annalisa Balding at the fabled Kingsclere academy which has been so instrumental in the nascent careers of current champion jockey William Buick and former treble champion jockey Oisin Murphy, among others.

As the 2022 season rumbled into gear in Britain it wasn't long before trainers started muttering Davies's name in quiet awe and swiftly booking him for rides as his claim dropped from seven to five to three faster that you can say future champion jockey.

On a coffee break after riding work for Smith on the eve of Bahrain's biggest race day on Friday, Davies explains his presence at Sakhir racecourse. He says, “The plan was just to come away for the winter, to save my claim, get a little bit of experience elsewhere and just learn as much as I can really. The plan was originally to go to Australia, however that fell through with my visa as I'm only 17. But Bahrain accepted me and I'm very thankful to Shaikh Isa and to Mr Smith for taking me on over here and giving me some nice opportunities. I've learned a lot, they're great people and I'm really enjoying it.”

By the opening day of the turf season back at home last March, Davies was given the leg-up from Charlie Appleby in the Godolphin blue silks to ride Modern News (GB) in the Lincoln, and by May, when he was closing in on 20 winners, he was already being talked about as a champion apprentice contender. In fact, the championship went to his chief rival, Benoit de la Sayette, who was apprenticed to John and Thady Gosden, but Davies has to date ridden 67 winners in Britain in a year he won't forget in a hurry and which included riding in the royal colours of her late Majesty the Queen.

“I love nothing more than race riding,” he says. “To have the first year I had was unbelievable really and I never expected it to go how it did. And hats off to Benoit, he's a fantastic young rider who's very, very talented and it was just great to have that competition there. I enjoyed every minute of it, even though it was very stressful along the way. But I learned so much, not just about race riding, but about myself this year, and I can't wait to go again when I start riding again, probably in late March.”

With just 27 wins permitted before he loses his claim, Davies is being wisely guarded by his boss and is full of praise for the Balding team as well as Hugo Palmer, who played such a key role in his formative years. Though the young jockey is not in contact with his father, the former champion apprentice Stephen Davies, he has also been able to lean on sterling help from both his mother and stepfather Phil Shea, who is also his agent.

“I grew up on a horse essentially,” he recalls. “It was all I ever did as a kid, just ride ponies and horses. In Newmarket I started riding out for Mr Palmer before school and he gave me a lot of fantastic opportunities. Then I started riding out for my boss, Mr Balding, when I was probably 12 or 13 in the summer holidays. I'd go there for a couple of weeks at a time and get to know the crew there and I absolutely loved it at Kingsclere. I got my grades in school and left when I had just turned 16. I started living in the [Kingsclere] hostel and made some great friends and never really looked back.”

He continues, “We had a great conversation just before I came out here about using the rest of my claim to the best of its worth, and the vision is very much to get experience. In a sense it's half a working holiday. You've got the sunshine, it's a completely different way of training and riding here, and it's a nice change of scenery for me.

“I've been here for a few weeks now and from what I've done so far, I've absolutely loved it, but it's very important that I get back on the yard, get to know the young horses for next season and spend some time with the guys in the yard. That's very important, so I'll be heading back home in mid-December.”

Prior to that, Davies, who has had two rides so far for Smith and will partner the Aga Khan-bred Rayounpour (Ire) (Cape Cross {Ire}) for him in the Batelco Cup on Friday, will make the most of the opportunities that his sojourn offers, including riding alongside Paul Hanagan, who is another to be wintering in Bahrain.

The former champion jockey was uncharacteristically punchy in his criticism of some of the riding on display at tracks in Britain in an interview earlier this season, which may or may not be in Davies's mind when he says, “The older jockeys are always there to mould you as a jockey because they can see that you're going to be in the weighing-room for a while and it's important to teach you along the way. So that's great when you get that. The weighing-room is a very busy place, but sometimes it can be quite lonely as well, and you find a lot of things out about yourself along the way.

“I've only had two rides here and I've loved it really. It's just been great to see the different culture, because in England [the racing] is every single day and it never stops. So when one day's racing is done, you're immediately looking at tomorrow's meeting and don't have much time to reflect. And that's what I've done since I've been here, trying to reflect on the season and trying to improve myself, not only as a jockey, but as a person really. I think that the quieter time has been very good for me.”

Davies's words, uttered at such a relatively young age, call to mind Rudyard Kipling's rather more famous words: 'If you can keep your head while all about you are losing theirs'. He has already proved that he has a cool and calculating head when it comes to race-riding. Facing the pressures that will surely come with his mounting fame will be a challenge of a different sort, but Davies appears to be in the best hands to help him with that along the way, not least his own.

A field of 12 was declared Sunday for the fourth running of the £600,000 G3 Bahrain International Trophy to be run over the 2000 metres Friday, Nov. 19, at the Rashid Equestrian & Horseracing Club.

Magny Cours (Medaglia d'Oro) was beaten less than one length into third behind the since-retired Lord Glitters (Fr) (Whipper) in last year's main event, and the US-bred galloper could be one of as many of four entrants this time around. The seven-year-old was victorious in the G3 Prix Perth at Saint-Cloud in 2021, but was well-beaten in this year's G1 Saudi Cup and the G1 Dubai World Cup, in which he was third in 2021. Given a lengthy spell, the Andre Fabre trainee prepped for this challenge with a three-length victory over the all-weather track at Chantilly Oct. 8. He could be joined by Meydan listed winner Dubai Future (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), eighth here last year, and Passion And Glory (GB) (Cape Cross {Ire}) from Saeed bin Suroor; and by the Charlie Appleby-conditioned G3 Dubai Millennium S. hero Royal Fleet (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}).

Shadwell's Alflaila (GB) (Dark Angel {Ire}) comes into the Bahrain Trophy in top form, having won the G3 Strensall S. at York Aug. 20 and the Oct. 8 G3 Darley S. at Newmarket in his last two outings.

“I've been really, really pleased with him since Newmarket,” trainer Owen Burrows told the Bahrain Turf Club. “He has come out of the race well. He looks great and although we're coming towards the end of the year, he's showing me no signs that he has had a hard season. He's really well.”

The Aga Khan-bred Simsir (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) took the 2020 renewal of this race for Victorious and trainer Fawzi Nass, and Dilawar (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) will try to see that lightning strikes twice for the same connections. Previously trained by Francis-Henri Graffard, the five-year-old won the 2021 G3 Prix Quincey in the Aga Khan colours and was only narrowly beaten in this year's G2 Prix du Muguet and G3 Prix Bertrand du Breuil Longines. He was acquired for €500,000 at last month's Arqana Arc Sale with this race in mind.
