Waipiro (Ire) (Australia {GB}), who ran sixth in the G1 Derby in the UK earlier this year, sustained a tendon injury to his right foreleg last week and is uncertain to make the Hong Kong Derby in March, trainer John Size told the South China Morning Post.

Bred by Shane Molan, the Siu Pak-Kwan runner won the G3 Hampton Court S. after his Derby effort, leading former trainer Ed Walker to describe him as the “perfect horse for the Hong Kong Derby”.

“I don't have a plan now because he's got a tendon injury,” Size told the paper regarding the now-gelding. “A tendon's a tendon. The recovery time depends on the horse.”

Waipiro's older half-brother Waikuku (Ire) (Harbour Watch {Ire}), a winner of the G1 Stewards' Cup (twice) and G1 Queen's Silver Jubilee Cup, ran second in the HK Derby in 2019.

Making it another Irish Champions Day winner that was easy to find on paper, the third pattern-race winner for Aidan O'Brien and Ryan Moore came in the G3 Paddy Power S. registered as the Kilternan S. courtesy of Adelaide River (Ire) (Australia {GB}). Always comfortable in a clear lead, the 11-8 favourite by virtue of the class edge he held having been runner-up in the G1 Irish Derby and G1 Grand Prix de Paris turned the screw from the top of the straight and may have been idling late as Al Aasy (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) cut the deficit to half a length.

O'Brien had a surprising admission about the colt who had pushed Auguste Rodin (Ire) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) so hard in the Curragh Classic. “We always thought he was kind of like Duke Of Marmalade, as he's after competing in big ones and getting very close in them but he's such a big horse that he's definitely going to have to be a way better horse next year,” he said. “He's after having a few tough races in second so it was nice for him to come here and Ryan was able to dictate his own pace on him. He said he did quicken very well, but just got a bit lonely in the last half a furlong.”

A fee will be announced later.

Bred by Aidan and Annemarie O'Brien's Whisperview Trading, the Coolmore partners-owned bay had been entered in the Tattersalls July Sale, but had been withdrawn. Trained by O'Brien for five seasons, the son of three-time Group/Grade 1 producer Senta's Dream won six of his 25 starts and earned over $2.25 million.

Besides his 2020 GI Breeders' Cup Mile score, he also triumphed in two editions of the G2 Minstrel S. (2021/22) and was placed in another five top-level races across England, France, and the U.S. A half-brother to dual Group 1 winner Iridessa (Ire) (Ruler Of The World {Ire}) and the late GI Belmont Oaks/Beverly D. S. heroine Santa Barbara (Ire) (Camelot {GB}), the 6-year-old will stand alongside Group 3 winner Phoenix Tower and the Group 1-placed Fiero (Jpn).

One of the first runners to emerge out of the Derby, Siu Pak-Kwan's Waipiro (Ire) (Australia {GB}–London Plane {Ire}, by Danehill Dancer {Ire}) did the Blue Riband form no harm at all with an authoritative success in Royal Ascot's G3 Hampton Court S. on Thursday. Sixth and not disgraced at Epsom, having booked his ticket there with a runner-up finish in the Listed Lingfield Derby Trial, the Ed Walker trainee was able to maintain his season's progress and dominate this competitive race to suggest as bright a future as his high-class half-brother Waikuku (Ire) (Harbour Watch {Ire}).

Lit up by a bump leaving the stalls and keen throughout the early stages resisting the restraint applied by Tom Marquand, Waipiro was a little out of his ground but better nearer the back than the front with the early pace notably fast. Straightening for home with a wall of rivals to get by, the 7-1 shot's passage was cleared by the errant diagonal dive of Oviedo (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) up ahead which compromised the eventual runner-up Exoplanet (Fr) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) but given his relentless momentum to the line he could not be called anything other than clear best.

“In the Derby, I got caught too far back and he just didn't stay a mile and a half, it was as simple as that in my mind, and I know Ed thought so too,” Marquand said of the 2 1/4-length winner. “There was a nice tempo today and fortunately for me I was lucky. I got a couple of the splits that I needed to get that run and he showed an exceptional turn of foot to burst through as he did and put the race to bed in a matter of a few strides.”

Waipiro is back! @edwalkerracing's colt wins the Hampton Court at #RoyalAscot and it's a double on the day for @TomMarquand! @Ascot pic.twitter.com/5uGJRjf6Wa

— At The Races (@AtTheRaces) June 22, 2023

“You'd like to think he is still an improver,” his rider added. “We were really pleased with the run in the Derby and back to a mile and a quarter today he showed his dominance and hopefully he can now go on a path and show his stamp as a top-class horse.”

Walker added, “The worry was the close proximity to the Derby, only 19 days, as not many horses back up from the Derby to Ascot successfully. If there was a brilliant alternative in a couple of weeks' time, we may have been tempted, but there wasn't and this was the perfect race for him. I have quite a long-standing team now at home and Charles Guet, my head lad who has been with me for 10 years, rides him every day and he was happy with him. He was well, so we rolled the dice and it paid off.”

“It's been an agonising wait between drinks and we've had quite a lot of seconds. Last year we had a second in the Kensington Palace, in the Wokingham and we were second yesterday in the Duke of Cambridge. It has been a bit frustrating, so I am really pleased to have kicked that one home. My great friend Tom Morley brought a filly [Cynane] over for the Queen Mary and I said, 'Tommy, listen, you're not going to win–just enjoy the ride, because it's so hard to win here!' We realise now the enormity of the challenge and it feels even better.”

Exoplanet's rider David Egan was not blaming the late interference for the runner-up's defeat. “We got a nice, smooth passage from a wide draw, had cover and relaxed well,” he said. “He got a little bit of a bump in the straight. He's a very classy individual, but take nothing away from the winner, he was good.”

GREY LUX (IRE) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) is a son of the G1 Prix du Moulin de Longchamp heroine Grey Lilas (Ire) (Danehill), whose best progeny to date was the G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches, G1 Prix de Diane and G1 Prix d'Ispahan winner Golden Lilac (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). Like those luminaries, Andre Fabre has charge of the Gestut Ammerland homebred who meets five peers at the track at which the trainer introduced his listed-winning half-brother Golden Guepard (Ire) (Hurricane Run (Ire).

14.25 Compiegne, Debutantes, €27,000, 3yo, f, 10fT
ART MYTHIQUE (IRE) (Australia {GB}) is another Andre Fabre blueblood introduced on the card, being Ballymore Thoroughbred Racing's daughter of the Wildensteins' luminary Aquarelliste (Fr) (Danehill). The triple Group 1-winning Prix de Diane heroine has already produced the G1 Prix Jean Romanet runner-up Ame Bleue (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) and listed scorer Any Time Soon (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) and this May-foaled chestnut has time to add to the family's achievements, as does The Aga Khan's Ashalyka (Fr) (Dariyan {Fr}), a daughter of the dual Group 2 scorer Ashalanda (Fr) (Linamix {Fr}).

Group 1 winner Proud And Regal (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), third in Leopardstown's G3 Derby Trial S., will cut back in trip for the G1 Tattersalls Irish 2000 Guineas in late May, trainer Donnacha O'Brien revealed on Tuesday.

“I thought he travelled really well [at Leopardstown],” said O'Brien. “There's definitely a chance that he will get 10 furlongs and we could be going back there after the Guineas, but the plan is to go to the Curragh for the Irish Guineas.”

Raced by the Coolmore partners, the 2022 G1 Criterium International hero was second in the G2 Futurity S. in August and second in the G1 National S. at the Curragh a month later, prior to his Saint-Cloud heroics. A winner of the G3 Tyros S. in July, Proud And Regal's Derby Trial effort was his most recent.

O'Brien also gave an update on Listed Dee S. runner-up Alder (Ire) (Australia {GB}), who will travel to Epsom Downs for the G1 Betfred Derby on the first Saturday in June.

“We're aiming at the Epsom Derby,” he added. “I think it is an open race. I think he got in a poor position at Chester off a very slow pace, on ground he wouldn't like, and he just hung in behind the winner in the last furlong.

“But I think it was a very decent run from him. We think he's a good horse and he's going to be a much better horse on better ground over a mile and a half.”

As a juvenile, Alder was third in the G2 KPMG Champions Juvenile S., and won his 3-year-old bow, a 10-furlong race at Cork, in April.

Coolmore and Westerberg's 575,000gns Tattersalls October Book 1 yearling and 'TDN Rising Star' Point Lonsdale (Ire) (Australia {GB}–Sweepstake {Ire}, by Acclamation {GB}) made a winning seasonal return in last month's G3 Alleged S. at the Curragh, having been on the shelf for almost a year after running seventh in last term's G1 2000 Guineas, and added to his tallies in 2021's G3 Tyros S. and G2 Futurity S. with a battling effort in Friday's G2 IRE-Incentive It Pays To Buy Irish Huxley S at Chester.

Positioned in second passing the judge first time, the well-backed 5-6 favourite came under increased pressure from halfway and stayed on in resolute fashion once gaining an edge into the straight to hold the late rattle of Mujtaba (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) by a neck, providing Ryan Moore with a record eighth renewal of the extended 10-furlong contest.

“He was a good 2-year-old who won a Listed race, a Group 3 and a Group 2, but he wasn't around for most of last year,” commented Moore. “It wasn't very pretty, but he's a real galloper and he probably hasn't been round a tight track like this before. He's only really been to the Curragh, Leopardstown and Ascot and he was just a bit unsure what to do with himself. Today's race was well up to standard and the track didn't suit him, but he has a great attitude, to be fair to him, and plenty of ability. It was a very good performance.”

Pedigree Notes

Point Lonsdale, who also ran second in the G1 Vincent O'Brien National S. as a juvenile, is the ninth of 11 reported foals and one of five winners produced by the stakes-winning GIII Appalachian S. runner-up and G3 Princess Margaret S. third Sweepstake (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}), herself a half-sister to the stakes-placed Dustymour (Ire) (Azamour {Ire}) and to the dam of the stakes-winning Conformist (Hit It A Bomb). The March-foaled bay is a full-brother to G1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud hero Broome (Ire) and to the hitherto unraced 2-year-old colt Diego Velazquez (Ire) (Frankel {GB}). His third dam is Hesmonds Stud matriarch Galaxie Dust (Blushing Groom {Fr}).

The 15-2 chance broke well from the far-side stall and tracked the leaders in fifth for most of this straight nine-furlong contest. Easing into third approaching the quarter-mile marker, he took some time to engage top gear and, once doing so, devoured the ground under continued urging up the hill to deny Kolsai (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) by a half-length in the dying strides for a career high.

“I was delighted with how professional he was when the gates opened and, from that wide draw, he had every opportunity to be keen and free, but he settled into the race really well,” said Ferguson of the G1 2000 Guineas, G2 Dante Stakes and G1 Derby entry. “I thought he was given a lovely ride and, from the jockey's action, it looked like he was pretty happy the whole way, so I'm thrilled. He has always been a big type and we made an executive decision to leave him and let him develop over the winter. That run at Newcastle and today has shown that he does have that ability we thought he had at home. The whole way through his training has been fairly smooth, so credit to the guys back home as they all do a wonderful job.” Looking ahead, the local conditioner added, “I think he will definitely get further in time and we've got a lot of options ahead of us. It is very exciting to have a horse of this calibre for his owner, who has been with me since I started. He is in both the Dante and the Derby and I think we have to see how he comes out of the race first. The [2000] Guineas is not far away and he looks like he wants further, but I have to talk to the owner first.”

Pedigree Notes
Canberra Legend, half to a yearling colt by Too Darn Hot (GB), is one of three scorers from as many runners produced by an unraced half-sister to four black-type performers headed by G2 Gimcrack S. victor Blaine (GB) (Avonbridge {GB}), the stakes-winning Bogart (GB) (Bahamian Bounty {GB}) and G3 Prix Eclipse runner-up Legal Attack (GB) (Shalaa {Ire}). Descendants of the April-foaled chestnut's fifth dam Djallybrook (Fr) (Djakao {Fr}) include GI Breeders' Cup Sprint-winning US champion Lit de Justice (El Gran Senor), G1 Racing Post Trophy-winning sire Commander Collins (Ire) (Sadler's Wells) and G1 Derby and G1 Irish Derby third Colonel Collins (El Gran Senor).

If there were any fitness doubts about TDN Rising Star Point Lonsdale (Ire) (Australia {GB}–Sweepstake {Ire}, by Acclamation {GB}) ahead of Sunday's G3 Alleged S. at The Curragh, they were answered categorically as Ballydoyle's almost-forgotten talent worked hard to prevail and get back on track on his comeback. Set a stiff task by the race-hardened Visualisation (Ire) (No Nay Never) as that Listed Devoy S. winner took no prisoners on the front end, the 2021 G2 Futurity S.-winning full-brother to stable stalwart Broome (Ire) was kept close by Wayne Lordan and only began to get on top inside the last 150 yards. At the line, the 6-4 favourite who was last seen finishing unplaced in the 2000 Guineas had 1 1/2 lengths to spare over that rival as they finished clear.

“I'm very happy with that on his first run back on that ground. He's going to stay further,” Aidan O'Brien said. “We thought as a two-year-old that he would get further than seven furlongs, but he never went any further because we had other horses. Then we ran him in the Guineas and he got injured. There was nowhere to hide today. Joseph's horse went a good gallop and none of the other horses were able to close.”

Where Point Lonsdale fits in remains to be seen, with the stable not short on big names among its older horses. “We have Luxembourg in the same sort of bracket,” the Ballydoyle conditioner added. “At the moment we are looking at the Ganay for him and, if not, the [G2] Mooresbridge. This horse could go for something like the [G1] Coronation Cup and take in another race before that.”

Pedigree Notes
Point Lonsdale's dam Sweepstake, who was successful in the Listed National S. and Bedanken S., runner-up in the GIII Appalachian S. and third in the G3 Princess Margaret S., has already excelled by producing the aforementioned seven-times group-winning Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud hero Broome by Galileo's son Australia. Galileo is also responsible for the family's triple group-winning stayer Ernest Hemingway (Ire), while his son Frankel (GB) sired another G2 Futurity S. winner in Rostropovich (Ire), who went on to finish runner-up in the G1 Irish Derby, and the G3 Prix d'Aumale scorer Toulifaut (Ire).

This is also the dynasty of the stable's G1 Phoenix S.-winning sire Zoffany (Ire) and the G1 St Leger runner-up Berkshire Rocco (Fr) (Sir Percy {GB}), as well as the G3 Bengough S. winner Projection (GB) who shares Acclamation as a sire with Sweepstake. Others of note from this Hesmonds Stud family include the G3 Fred Darling S. winner Bulaxie (GB) (Bustino {GB}), responsible for the G2 Premio Lydia Tesio winner Claxon (GB) (Caerleon) whose GIII Hillsborough S.-winning and G1 Nassau S.-placed daughter Cassydora (GB) (Darshaan {GB}) threw the aforementioned Ernest Hemingway. Sweepstake's 2-year-old colt by Frankel was unsurprisingly a 2.4million gns sensation when knocked down to M V Magnier and White Birch Farm as the second highest-priced lot at last year's Book 1 Sale.

The name of Navan winner Gooloogong has an impeccable Down Under connection, being by renowned sire (and Epsom & Irish Derby winner) Australia. In fact, “Gooloogong is a village located in New South Wales, Australia, population 295”, according to Wikipedia. The name of the hamlet also evokes (with a very slightly different spelling) that of Australian tennis phenomenon Evonne Goolagong, who was born in Griffith (a town) and grew up in Barellan (a village)–both locations are in New South Wales and not that far from, yes!, Gooloogong. Evonne Goolagong won seven Grand Slam tournaments between 1971 and 1980; she was a true champion and could have shined even more if not for interruptions caused by motherhood and injuries. The colt in question is also expected to shine and have a bright future at the Derby distance, so race commentators better start practicing the pronunciations of his lovely name, which is spelt with only one vowel recurring five times–exotically challenging.

CICERO'S GIFT (GB) (c, 3, Muhaarar {GB}–Terentia {GB}, by Diktat {GB}). O-Rosehill Racing; B-Mrs F S Williams (GB); T-Charles Hills.

Cicero's Gift, a 3-year-old winner, has an intriguing name–deeply rooted in ancient Roman history. Terentia is the name of the dam of our promising colt, but also of the rich, engaged and dutiful wife of the famous writer/politician/lawyer Cicero (106BC-43BC), a colossus of the turbulent last century of the Roman Republic and contemporary of history heavyweights Julius Caesar, Crassus, Pompey. Cicero was both a philosopher and a man of action (or inaction, at times, as some critics say). The marriage eventually ended in divorce; Cicero soon had a new wife but was eventually assassinated by hitmen sent by rival Mark Anthony (Cleopatra's future beau). Terentia remarried too (twice), survived and prospered. What the “gift” in the name of our colt may allude to, we will probably never know–maybe that behind every great Roman consul there is a remarkable lady, clearly contributing to the good times.
