Question: How do I insure my new foal?

Olivia Lowe, Kiger Insurance: Congratulations! You've just welcomed an adorable, leggy foal into your stable with visions of roses or lilies dancing in your head. However, before popping the cork, you may want to consider insurance for your future superstar.

Foal mortality insurance is an important aspect of protecting your investment whether you bought a pregnant mare at auction or sent your mare on a date with a stallion. We are often asked – “If my mare is insured – does it cover my foal?” Know that simply having mortality insurance on your mare does not provide coverage on the foal – in utero or after birth – so consider your tolerance for risk and take advantage of foal insurance if you need that protection.

Normally, a healthy foal can be insured as early as 24 hours after birth. Specific foal vetting and bloodwork requirements are necessary on young foals. Notify your agent as soon as your foal is born and discuss when you want coverage to incept. If your foal presents with broken ribs, irregular bloodwork, contracted limbs, “dummy foal” syndrome, or other health issues this will impact when coverage can be incepted and on what terms.

Young foals are the most fragile members of the Thoroughbred family which results in the highest mortality rates.    If you can stand to wait a month or more to insure your foal, the rate will be slightly lower. We advise our clients that if the foal is special, don't wait – go ahead and insure it as soon as it is eligible.

Most mares are bred on Guaranteed Live Foal contracts which gives you some protection in the event of abortion or birth of a dead foal. In those situations where you have a No Guarantee season, their may be other types of insurance available. This will depend on the age and breeding history of the mare and carries a high rate.

While the cutest, fuzziest time of year is upon us, it also comes with increased risks. Contact an agent with any further questions and to discuss your options and come up with the best plan for your breeding insurance needs and loss exposures.

Godolphin leads all breeders with five North American graded stakes winners through March 9, all homebreds, with the most recent addition Micheline, who took the Grade 2 Hillsborough Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs on March 6.

It was the seasonal debut for the 4-year-old Bernardini filly, and her first career graded stakes win after several close calls in previous campaigns. She is out of the multiple Grade 1-winning Include mare Panty Raid.

Champion Essential Quality, made his seasonal debut a winning one with a powerful drive down the sloppy Oaklawn Park stretch to win the Grade 3 Southwest Stakes by 4 1/4 lengths on Feb. 27. He is a son of Tapit, out of the Grade 3-placed Elusive Quality mare Delightful Quality.

Godolphin has a strong pair of 4-year-old colts at the top of the older male division, in Maxfield and Mystic Guide.

Maxfield, a son of Street Sense, shined in his first start of the season with a four-wide rally on Feb. 13 to win the G3 Mineshaft Stakes at the Fair Grounds.

He is out of the winning Bernardini mare Velvety, who raced as a Godolphin homebred in England.

Mystic Guide added his name to the fold with a dominant performance in the G3 Razorback Handicap at Oaklawn Park on Feb. 27, drawing off to win by six lengths over a sloppy sealed track.

Mystic Guide is also out of a mare that competed under the Godolphin colors in Music Note, a daughter of A.P. Indy who picked up five Grade 1 wins over the course of her career.

Rounding out the group was Antoinette, a 4-year-old daughter of Hard Spun who also won her seasonal bow with an effortless front-running triumph in the G3 The Very One Stakes, also on Feb. 27.

Another multi-generational member of the Godolphin breeding program, Antoinette is out of the Godolphin-homebred Elusive Quality mare Shuruq, who was a group stakes winner in the UAE and Turkey.

QUESTION: What role does my insurance plan play when applying for an equine loan?

BRYCE BURTON: Business owners within the Thoroughbred industry, similarly to other business ventures, have the option to apply for outside funding in order to assist with the acquisition of high valued purchases. Just as a new business owner may secure a loan for the purchase of a new home, piece of land, of horse farm, the same option is available for the purchase of livestock, including Thoroughbreds.

When purchasing Thoroughbreds, the simple rule of thumb is that financing is available on breeding stock, but not racehorses. Mares, foals, and yearlings can all be used as collateral for an equine loan. As you'd expect, the lender requires that the applicant carry a certain amount of Full Mortality Insurance coverage throughout the life of the loan, so that in the event that something catastrophic happens to the equine asset, which in this case also serves as the collateral, the lender will be paid back in full.

The general rule of thumb when securing an equine loan is that the lender will provide a note up to the amount of 50 percent of the purchase price, making the borrower responsible for paying for the other 50 percent of the purchase.

As an example, if a new owner purchases a mare in the amount of $100,000 at public auction, they have the option to acquire outside funds through a lender up to the amount of $50,000 and would be responsible for the other $50,000. The lender would then require that the borrower place mortality coverage for the amount of the loan, which in this case is $50,000. It should be noted that the insured has the option to insure 100 percent of the purchase if desired. However, in most instances, the bank will only require the insured shows coverage for the amount of the loan. The lender is listed as a Loss Payee on the policy so that in the event of a claim, both parties would be compensated for their respective interests.
