A five-year agreement aimed at strengthening and growing pool betting in the UK was signed by Ascot Racecourse and the Tote on Thursday.

Beginning on Jan. 1, 2024, the agreement ensures all pool bets placed on racing from Ascot Racecourse will continue to support liquidity in the UK pool which has been operated by the UK Tote Group since October 2019. The “Bet with Ascot” brand is included under this umbrella of bets as long as the bets are placed on the Tote website, through bookmakers and third-party partners on course.

This agreement also dovetails with the initiative that assists Ascot with being central to the World Pool since it began at Royal Ascot in 2019. Tote operators from 28 countries currently commingle pools which are hosted by the Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC).

Alastair Warwick, chief executive of Ascot Racecourse, said, “We are delighted have a new agreement in place with the Tote which will allow us to build on what has been achieved domestically and internationally over the last four years. As one of the original architects of World Pool, alongside the Hong Kong Jockey Club and the Tote, we are excited to support the further development of World Pool to ensure both racing fans and the sport benefit from it. We will ensure that Ascot's top-class racing continues to be at the forefront of British racing's efforts to see that the sport is watched and bet on by a growing domestic and global audience.”

Alex Frost, chief executive of the UK Tote Group, added, “The Tote is immensely proud to be a partner of Ascot Racecourse which hosts some of the most prestigious racedays in the sporting calendar. This new agreement ensures Ascot Racecourse and the Tote are perfectly positioned to work together to achieve a strong UK Pool, alongside the continued development of World Pool, which are crucial elements to the future financial sustainability of the sport.”

Ascot's director of racing and public affairs, Nick Smith, has been named to the New Year's Honours list.

Smith, who started at Ascot in 2000, was made a lieutenant of the Royal Victorian Order, which rewards personal service to the monarch and their household. In 2023, King Charles III and Queen Camilla celebrated their first Royal Ascot winner with Desert Hero (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), who would subsequently be Classic placed in the G1 St Leger. Other highlights of Ascot's year include Hukum (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) and Westover (GB) (Frankel {GB})'s battle in the G1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth S., and Frankie Dettori's Royal Ascot resurgence aboard G1 Gold Cup winner Courage Mon Ami (GB) (Frankel {GB}) among others.

Smith said, “I'm obviously absolutely delighted and honoured. It's been a fantastic journey working for Ascot for so long and it's nice to have it recognised.

“It's been a brilliant year at the racecourse with the King and Queen having a winner, Frankie Dettori lighting up Royal Ascot this year, a vintage King George and full fields for the Shergar Cup, so we really couldn't ask for much more.”

Smith added, “We're just about to start our overseas campaign in Australia, Japan, the United States and suchlike, looking for those horses to populate the Royal meeting. That will all start in earnest and hopefully build up to another fantastic meeting in June.”

Smith was not the only racing industry figure to be honoured, with the Thoroughbred Breeders' Association (TBA)'s Julian Richmond-Watson receiving an OBE. Richard Linley was recognised with an MBE. Linley was the former British Horseracing Authority (BHA) senior inspector of courses.

A pair of runners competing during Kentucky Derby week at Churchill Downs, the home of the Kentucky Derby, will be offered wild card entries for Epsom's 3-year-old Classics contested four weeks later.

The winner of Churchill's $500,000 GII Edgewood S., contested on the Kentucky Oaks undercard May 3, will receive an entry and travel incentive to run in the G1 Betfred Oaks at Epsom May 31.

In the colt's division, a runner from the $500,000 GII American Turf S., scheduled for Kentucky Derby Day May 4, will receive an entry and travel incentive to the June 1 Betfred Derby.

The Jockey Club and Ascot Racecourse have also coordinated with Churchill to offer wild card entries to a pair of Royal Ascot fixtures. A runner from the $500,000 GII Twin Spires Turf Sprint S., also run on Kentucky Derby Day, will receive an entry and a travel incentive to run in the G1 King Charles III S. (formerly the King's Stand S. at Royal Ascot June 18. Additionally, a runner from the $1-million GI Old Forester Turf Classic S., contested on Kentucky Derby Day, will receive an entry and a travel incentive to run in either the G1 Queen Anne S. June 18 or the G1 Prince of Wales's S., held June 19, both staged during the Royal meeting.

In return for the above incentives for U.S.-based runners, a runner from both the Queen Anne and the Prince of Wales's will receive an entry and a travel incentive to run in Colonial Downs' $1-million GI Arlington Million S. over 10 furlongs in mid-August.

Also, a runner from the G1 Tattersalls Falmouth S. at Newmarket's July Festival July 12 will also receive an entry and travel incentive to run in the $500,000 GI Beverly D S. on the same day as the Colonial Downs Arlington Million.

Winners of the aforementioned races will receive the invite to run in the corresponding races across the Atlantic. However, in the event that the winners aren't able to accept, racecourses may then also invite placed horses. The elimination procedures in these races will remain as they are now.

“A trip to Churchill Downs is one that should be on the bucket list for every racing fan, the world over,” said Matt Woolston, Assistant Racing and International Racing Director at The Jockey Club. “The Kentucky Derby itself can trace its origin back to Epsom Downs in 1780 when Diomed won the very first Derby and we are proud to reinforce this historic link.

“These historic races already have an international reputation and we want to welcome more and more international runners in the years to come.”

The total prize-money at Ascot Racecourse in 2024 will increase to £17.5 million, the racecourse announced on Wednesday. This marks a 3.9% increase on 2023's total of £16.8 million.

Royal Ascot's prize-money has been raised to an even £10 million, with no races contested at less than £110,000, up from £100,000. All Group 1 races at the iconic stand will be worth £650,000, an increase of £50,000 per race. The affected races include the King Charles III S. (formerly the King's Stand S.), the St James's Palace S., the Gold Cup, the Commonwealth Cup, and the Coronation S.

Nick Smith, Director of Racing and Public Affairs at Ascot Racecourse, said, “We are pleased to be delivering these prize-money increases in 2024 against a backdrop of uncertainty and an unprecedented number of negative headwinds for the industry. The financial impact on all facets of the industry is already being acutely felt.

“It is, however, crucial for Royal Ascot to maintain its position on the global stage at a time when participants at home and abroad have so many alternative lucrative options away from Britain.

“Whist the main increases have been made to the Royal Meeting to enable us to get to £10 million for the first time, we have made increases in other areas of the programme as well.

“These include increases to fit with the new Premier fixture structure, including at the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup, where there is a particular focus on maintaining full fields.

“Importantly, no race at Ascot will be run for less than in 2023 including at our Core (non-Premier) fixtures. This is in spite of a reduction in central funding to this element of the programme, which has therefore required further increases in executive contribution.”

Ascot Racecourse will host the 20th anniversary celebration of the Thoroughbred Industry Employee Awards, set to be held on Monday, Feb. 26, 2024. ITV Racing's Ed Chamberlin will host the festivities for the first time since 2020.

The awards, sponsored by the British Horseracing Authority (BHA) and by Godolphin, honours and celebrates the skill, passion and dedication of the remarkable individuals who care for the horses. There are six award categories–Leadership Award, Dedication Award, Rider/Racing Groom Award, Stud Staff Award, Community Award (in recognition of Rory MacDonald), and David Nicholson Newcomer Award.

“We are delighted that the 2024 Thoroughbred Industry Employee Awards ceremony will be held at Ascot Racecourse and that Ed Chamberlin has again agreed to host the celebrations,” BHA chief executive Julie Harrington said. “Ascot is an iconic venue, renowned for quality both on and off the track–it's the ideal setting for our 20th anniversary and we are proud and very grateful that Ascot Racecourse Supports joins us as a formal partner.”

Nick Smith, director of racing and public affairs at Ascot Racecourse, commented, “It's a privilege for Ascot Racecourse to host the 2024 Thoroughbred Industry Employee Awards and celebrate the 20th anniversary. People are the heart and soul of this industry and we are very lucky to have so many talented, dedicated, hard-working and enthusiastic employees that help keep this industry thriving, so it is only right we celebrate the best our industry has to offer.”

Team Ladies accumulated 78 point to just edge Team Rest of the World by five points to take the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup at Ascot on Saturday.

Hollie Doyle and Saffie Osborne each rode two winners on the day, and Doyle scored points with each of her five rides, resulting in her first Alistair Haggis Silver Saddle, awarded to the day's leading rider. Her points total for the day stands at 48.

After winning with The Very Man (Ire) (Jeremy) and Regal Empire (Ire) (Farhh {GB}) in the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Stayers and the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Classic respectively, Doyle said, “I haven't won the Alistair Haggis Silver Saddle before, so it's great to have that on my CV. I got to ride in the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup first when I was an apprentice, and it let me showcase myself on a wider stage internationally.

“I rode a winner for Clive Cox and I ended up riding out and had quite a few winners for him–I actually rode him a listed winner–so something really did come of that opportunity, and I think it is important in that regard. It's a very good meeting and Ascot do a great job.”

Osborne was successful aboard Scampi (GB) (Nayef) in the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Challenge and Dark Trooper (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) in the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Sprint. Hayley Turner, the most successful jockey in the history of the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup, captained the Ladies Team but was unable to add to her cumulative 322 points.

She said, “It has been good fun again and it is nice to have all the family here. This has been the best Ladies team we have ever had–I did not get any points at all and they carried me. It has been great fun and I hope I can do this for many years.”

Kazuo Yokoyama won the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Dash with Rogue Lightning (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}), which helped boost Team Rest of the World to second with 73 points. Perotto (GB) (New Bay {GB}), with Thore Hammer Hansen aboard, won the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Mile with Team Europe accumulating 54 points. Team Great Britain and Ireland was fourth with 35 points.

Nick Smith, Director of Racing and Public Affairs at Ascot Racecourse, said, “It has been another brilliant Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup, with the competition going all the way to the final race. It was fantastic to see Alistair Haggis Silver Saddle winner Hollie Doyle and debutante Saffie Osborne ride doubles to land the competition for the Ladies, their fourth success in the last eight renewals.

“We were also thrilled to see international success for Kazuo Yokoyama, which will have been hugely popular in Japan, and delighted that Thore Hammer Hansen rode a winner after stepping in so late in the day.

“Andrew Balding takes home £12,500 for his yard as the leading trainer on the day and, once again, we are hugely grateful to all the trainers and owners for supporting this unique event. There has been more than £500,000 on offer to participants today, which we wouldn't be able to do without the sponsors Dubai Duty Free, so a huge thanks goes to them for their continued to long-standing support.”

Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum's homebred Rosallion (Ire) (Blue Point {Ire}–Rosaline {Ire}, by New Approach {Ire}) became his first-crop sire's third stakes winner when scooting to an impressive four-length triumph in Saturday's Listed Flexjet Pat Eddery S. at Ascot.

The 11-1 chance, who annexed his June 7 debut over 6 1/2 furlongs at Newbury when last seen, raced under cover in eighth through the early fractions of this straight seven-furlong test. Making eyecatching headway on the bridle once past halfway, he cruised to the front with 1 1/2 furlongs remaining and quickened clear in impressive fashion to easily outclass fellow 11-1 chance Al Musmak (Ire) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}) by daylight. Godolphin's 'TDN Rising Star' Ancient Wisdom (Fr) (Dubawi {Ire}) was unable to match the winner's kick and finished 3/4-of-a-length further adrift in third.

“He's a good horse, we always thought he was a good horse and he's my [G1 2000] Guineas horse,” said trainer Richard Hannon after doubling his win tally in the contest. “The further he goes, the better he goes. He's in the [G1 Vincent O'Brien] National S. in Ireland and will obviously be in the [G1] Dewhurst. He's not a small horse, he has loads of scope and he behaves like a very good horse. We're thinking about next year.”

Rosallion becomes the first stakes winner out of an unraced full-sister to G2 Prix Daniel Wildenstein victor Ostilio (GB). The April-foaled bay's second dam, Listed Hoppings S. runner-up Reem Three (GB) (Mark Of Esteem {Ire}), has six stakes winners to her credit headed by this term's G1 Queen Anne S. hero Triple Time (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) and G1 Prix Jean Romanet victrix Ajman Princess (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}). She is also the dam of G3 Bengough S. victor Cape Byron (GB) (Shamardal) and Listed Heron S. winner Captain Winters (GB) (Lope De Vega {Ire}). Reem Three, who is a half-sister to G2 Celebration Mile and G3 Sovereign S. victor Afsare (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), is out of a half-sister to stakes-winning G3 Dubai City of Gold runner-up Lost Soldier Three (Ire) (Barathea {Ire}). From the family of G2 Derby Italiano hero Summer Festival (GB) (Poet's Voice {GB}), Rosallion is kin to a yearling colt by Make Believe (GB).

The British racing industry will partner will the Department for Business and Trade (DBT) at the 2023 Breeders' Cup at Santa Anita in November to deliver a UK government trade mission centred around the horse racing industry.

Great British Racing International (GBRI) will lead the four-day mission in partnership with Ascot Racecourse, The Jockey Club and UK Tote Group. The trade mission represents the first time the British racing industry has collaborated on a large-scale international event with the support of the UK government.

Beginning on Wednesday, Nov. 1, is the Welcome Reception hosted by the UK government and sponsored by Ascot Racecourse and The Jockey Club. The event will allow members of the UK racing industry at the Breeders' Cup the opportunity to meet the trade mission delegation, valued owners and other international investors. The remaining three days of the mission will be a business development programme for trade delegates and the opportunity to see British racing play host in a dedicated hospitality area within Santa Anita Park in California. In addition to the programme, there will also be the second edition of the World Tote Association (WoTA) Forum which will be co-chaired by the UK Tote Group and the ATG on Thursday, Nov. 2.

UK Minister for Exports, Department for Business and Trade, Lord Offord said, “Horse racing makes a hugely important contribution to the UK economy and offers exciting export and investment opportunities, so it is fantastic that we are pioneering the first horse racing trade mission at the Breeders' Cup in November.

“The Breeders' Cup offers us the chance to showcase the UK's expertise on a global stage–and hopefully see more British success on the track.”

Rod Street, Chief Executive of Great British Racing International, added, “This initiative, in partnership with the Department for Business and Trade and key industry stakeholders, will give British Racing a prime opportunity to showcase our world-leading credentials across various disciplines on the world stage. As well as facilitating discussions around UK exports, we will be looking to identify and drive opportunities for investment across our industry.

“We also hope that the event will demonstrate to the wider UK government that there is much to be gained by supporting and working more closely with the industry, in various capacities.

“GBRI has developed a close working relationship with DBT over the last two years and this is an excellent example of what our work in this area has yielded for the industry. We would like to thank the team at DBT for their enthusiasm and support for British racing; Ascot Racecourse and The Jockey Club for their kind sponsorship of the Welcome Reception as well as the Breeders' Cup for their assistance with the race day elements of the programme.”

As many as six horses from Aidan O'Brien's yard, including dual Derby winner Auguste Rodin (Ire) (Deep Impact {Jpn}), will line up in the G1 King George and Queen Elizabeth S. at Ascot on July 29.

Riding a two-race winning streak after taking Epsom's Blue Riband last month and the Irish equivalent for the Coolmore partners, Auguste Rodin beat stable-mate Adelaide River (Ire) (Australia {GB}) in the latter. He will aim to emulate former Coolmore kingpin Galileo (Ire) with a victory in the King George after winning two Derbys.

“He's on that programme, and so far, everything is going well [for the King George],” O'Brien told the Nick Luck Daily podcast on Wednesday,

The aforementioned Adelaide River enters off another strong second-place effort in the G1 Grand Prix de Paris at Longchamp on June 14. He is joined by Group 1-winning older horses Luxembourg (Ire) (Camelot {GB}), Broome (Ire) (Australia {GB}), and Bolshoi Ballet (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), while the G2 Huxley S. hero and Group 1-placed Point Lonsdale (Ire) (Australia {GB}) is another possible runner.

“Luxembourg is a very strong possible at the moment,” O'Brien continued. “Point Lonsdale is a strong possible at the moment. Broome, like I said, he could go [for the King George], and probably will go to Goodwood for the two miles [G1 Goodwood Cup S. on Aug. 1]. Bolshoi Ballet is a very strong possible. And then, obviously, Auguste Rodin and Adelaide River, we'd have to see how he [Adelaide River] came out of the race [G1 Grand Prix de Paris] and give him a little bit of time to see before we make any decision about him.”

O'Brien also provided an update on likely G1 Sussex S. runner Paddington (GB) (Siyouni {Fr}), who will potentially represent the Coolmore partners in the G1 Cox Plate in the autumn.

He said, “Everything went well since [the Eclipse], and is at the moment. He's on that plan and that programme [for the Sussex] at the moment.”

The Coolmore partners also have five of the nine fillies currently entered in Saturday's G1 Juddmonte Irish Oaks. G3 Cheshire Oaks heroine and G1 Oaks runner-up Savethelastdance (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), G2 Ribblesdale S. victress Warm Heart (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and Be Happy (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) were pleasing the Rosegreen handler particularly. He also has listed winner Library (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and winner Lambada (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) signed on.

“I suppose, we have three very strong fillies in there,” O'Brien added. “Obviously, the filly [Savethelastdance] from Chester we think is very well. This has always been her programme. And then the filly [Warm Heart] who won at Ascot. We weren't sure that stepping up the a mile and a half would suit her, but it obviously improved her.

“Another filly called Be Happy which we have always thought a lot of, [is in the race]. She was withdrawn at the last minute from the Oaks and we had her ready to run again, and she got an infection in her foot. The last three weeks everything has been very good with her. The plan is that is where she is going now at the moment, as well.”

Pair Of Contenders Pleasing Connections In Latest King George Works

Saeed Suhail's 2022 Derby winner Desert Crown (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) also remains in contention for the Ascot showpiece. Off for over a year with an ankle injury, the 4-year-old ran second in the G3 Brigadier Gerard S. at Sandown earlier this season. Another minor setback kept the Sir Michael Stoute trainee out of Royal Ascot and a run in the G1 Prince of Wales's S., but he pleased his connections in a work at Newmarket on Wednesday morning.

Suhail's racing manager, Bruce Raymond, said, “He worked this morning and Ryan [Moore] rode him. Michael was very pleased with him and I think there is a good chance he will go to Ascot.

“He worked nicely. It was a pleasing gallop. I can't say he is certain for the race, but everyone was very happy with him. There's a good chance he will go to Ascot.”

Already a winner of the King George in 2022, two-time Group 1 scorer Pyledriver (GB) (Harbour Watch {Ire}) also remains among the entries. He decisively won the G2 Hardwicke S. at Royal Ascot in June for co-trainers William Muir and Chris Grassick in the colours of the La Pyle Partnership.

“He just did want we wanted and we were delighted with him,” said Muir of the 6-year-old's Newbury gallop.

“It was not a serious, hard gallop, it was just a day out really. He goes to Newbury, has a warm-up little canter and then covers the distance, that's all. He did great. We're keeping our fingers crossed and we're in good shape. Fingers crossed we'll be there at Ascot.”

Edited Press Release

The turnover at Ascot Racecourse exceeded £100 million for the first time with a strong recovery from COVID-19 last season. The return to profit will allow for record prize money of £17 million set to be returned to the sport in 2023 and a voluntary increased loan repayment will help reduce debt ahead of schedule. The 2022 business summary highlighted several points of improvement:

A return to profit with a pre-tax profit of £3.4m after two difficult years of COVID-19 restrictions. This compares to a pre-COVID profit of £7.3m in 2019, highlighting significantly increased overheads and operating costs in the current economic climate.

Turnover rose by 161% to a record level of £101.4m with hospitality and admission revenues recovering strongly.

Attendance at Royal Ascot 2022 bounced back from COVID disruption to 273,465 with a total for the full year, excluding industry joint venture QIPCO British Champions Day, of 483,424.

Strong broadcast reach: World Pool turnover and international interest helped grow diverse revenue streams. Royal Ascot 2022 was broadcast into over 170 territories including NBC terrestrial coverage in America on the Saturday, reaching 2.5 million unique viewers, up 47% on 2021.

The loan agreement was renewed during the year and the term of the loan was extended by a minimum of three years.

£6m of the loan was repaid in 2022 (a £3m mandatory repayment and a voluntary partial early repayment of £3m) and the revolving credit facility of £5m, drawn down in March 2020, was repaid. Net debt at 31st December 2022 was £17.2m (2020 £25.4m).

The standby loan facility of £20m arranged through the Government CLBILS scheme remained undrawn during the year and matured at the end of April 2023. This was replaced by a revolving credit facility of £12.5m which remains undrawn.

Strong 2022 performance enabled record planned prize money in 2023 with £17m set to be on offer, an increase of £1.33m versus 2022. This excludes the £4.45m on offer at the industry joint venture fixture, QIPCO British Champions Day. Prize money at Royal Ascot 2023 was £9.52m, an increase of 10% over 2022.

Alastair Warwick, Chief Executive Officer at Ascot Racecourse, said:

“The figures for 2022 show that Ascot has recovered strongly from the impact of the pandemic. Last year's performance, headlined by record turnover, gave us the confidence to invest in the business this year, including reaching the £17m prize money mark for the first time.

“Having further reduced our debt, including through a voluntary additional repayment, we are in a good position to continue to improve both prize money and facilities.

“We are particularly encouraged to have seen strong attendance and hospitality metrics at Royal Ascot this year, the first under the reign of King Charles III. We had incredibly competitive, international fields and World Pool betting continues to be strong while viewing figures on ITV were excellent, including a peak of over a million every day and a ten year high for the final day.

“Their Majesties The King & Queen attended on all five days and it proved to be a very special occasion with Desert Hero carrying the Royal silks to victory, whilst Frankie Dettori signed off his Royal Ascot story with a ninth Gold Cup win.

“I would like to thank all our hard-working staff and our commercial and broadcast partners for their continued commitment to Ascot.”
