Consigned by Haras de la Haie Neuve, the bay is a grandson of G2 Ribblesdale S. heroine Thakafaat (Ire) (Unfuwain). Dual Group 1 winner and sire Power (GB) is under the third dam, as is GI E. P. Taylor S. victress Curvy (GB) (Galileo {Ire}). The colt was bred by Haras des Pyrenees.

It is worth noting that Goken, who stands alongside his sire Kendargent (Fr) at Haras de Colleville, has eight stakes winners to his credit, and his Zorken (Fr), who won a listed race earlier in the year, doubled up at that level in Thursday's Criterium de Vitesse at Deauville.

Friday's leading buyer Marc Antoine Berghgracht's MAB Agency also signed for a €17,000 son of Romanised (Ire) (lot 546) from the draft of Haras de Bourgeauville earlier in the day.

From a consignor's standpoint, Haras de la Haie Neuve was on top with five sold for a total of €135,000 and an average of €27,000.

Just behind lot 580 on the buyers' sheets was a filly (lot 627) by Toronado (Ire), who sold for €55,000 to Broadhurst Agency/Capucines Bloodstock. That sire had topped Thursday's session with a €130,000 colt (lot 434). Part of the Haras des Sablonnets draft, the bay is a half-sister to the stakes-placed Best Win (Fr) (Red Dubawi {Ire}).

Friday's session boasted a healthy clearance rate, as 80 sold of 93 offered (86%). The gross was €1,277,500, while the average was €15,969 and the median was €13,500.

The fifth and final session of the sale begins at 11 a.m. on Saturday with 93 yearlings catalogued.

A half-brother to two black-type performers, lot 434 is a son of the Prix de Diane place-getter Diyakalanie (Fr) (Ashkalani {Ire}) and was bred by Haras de Sainte Gauburge. Boisnard already trains two of his half-siblings, including Diyashal (Fr) (Shalaa {Ire}), who was won over fences and hurdles since the catalogue was printed. 

Beyond that highlight, trade remained solid through the middle tier with the highest clearance rate of the week so far at 90%. Though Part 2 of the October Sale has been conducted alphabetically over the last two days and is not graded, the figures across other sectors took a dip from the first of these two sessions and was the first this week to be down from the previous year as well. Turnover dropped by 10% to €4,216,500 and the average was down to €26,687 (-21%). The consistency of the trade was evident in the median being not too far below that at €22,000.

For the sale as a whole so far, figures are holding up pretty well, with the overall clearance rate of 86% being particularly noteworthy, while trade is roughly in keeping with last year. 

Several of this year's freshman sires in France are heftily represented in the sale. The Haras d'Etreham duo of Persian King (Ire) and Hello Youmzain (Fr) have had 33 and 27 yearlings through the ring respectively across the three days, with Persian King's average being €48,515 and Hello Youmzain's at €54,650. The former French-trained Arc winner Sottsass (Fr), who now resides in Ireland at Coolmore, has had nine sold for an average of €56,222.

Nicolas de Watrigant of Mandore International, who bought Wednesday's top lot, a daughter of Without Parole (GB), to race for Madaket Group, has now signed for eight yearlings for the American-based owners.

The sale returns to action from 2pm on Friday, with one final session starting at 11am on Saturday.

Frankel (GB) may rule at Tattersalls, but in Deauville we are in the court of France's champion sire Siyouni (Fr), whose 10 yearlings sold on Tuesday returned an average price of €189,500 and included one of the day's co-top lots at €420,000.

With a touch of déjà vu, that colt bore several similarities to one of the leading lights of the sale a few years ago. Both were bought on behalf of Coolmore by Laurent Benoit, who, after outbidding Anthony Stroud, said,  “He's by Siyouni out of a Galileo mare. It's the same price, same stallion and also the same underbidder as Paddington, and I think he will have the same trainer as Paddington. Let's hope he's as good as him.”

One of the differences in this case was the vendor of lot 132, which was Haras d'Etreham, who sold the son of the Grade III-placed Galileo (Ire) mare Decorating on behalf of his breeder Craig Bernick of Glen Hill Farm.

Sharing his podium at the top of the leader board was Fairway Consignment's colt by Zarak (Fr) (lot 101), who will head to Norway after being signed for by Ross Doyle on behalf of his longstanding clients Magne and Bente Jordanger.

“We were given the mandate to find a horse to win Classics in Scandinavia, the Norwegian Derby, hopefully that's the plan. He was on a very short list and the one we wanted to get,” Doyle said.

“He's for Magne and Bente of Stall Perlen and will go to trainer Wido Neuroth. He was a magnificent colt and every time we saw him he was very relaxed.”

He added, “They've won the Norwegian Oaks recently with a filly we bought them by Night Of Thunder [Thunder Sea]. Scandinavian owners are very competitive. Mr Jordanger said to me that he's at the stage of his life where he wants to drink the best wine and buy the best horses.”

We can all drink a toast to such a sentiment, and the largesse of the Jordangers, along with plenty of other buyers on the day, led to an upturn in trade from last year. The 170 yearlings sold on the day pushed the clearance rate up slightly to 82%, while turnover rose by 21.5% to  €15,581,000, and the average was also up, by 18%, to €91,653. The median increased from €55,000 to €70,000.

Another busy day for Stroud

Despite being denied one son of Siyouni, Anthony Stroud had already secured lot 47, a half-brother to last year's October Sale topper, at €350,000. Offered by Haras du Mont dit Mont, the colt is out of Shamtee (Ire) (Shamardal), a Listed winner from the further family of stallions Territories (Ire), Street Cry (Ire), Shamardal and Victor Ludorum (Ire).

The Siyouni colt will join Andre Fabre's string for Godolphin, and was one of 14 purchases by Stroud Coleman Bloodstock during a busy Tuesday. Also on the list, for an unnamed client, was the Sea The Moon (Ger) half-sister to Group 1 winner Simca Mille (Fr) (Tamayuz {GB}), who was sold by her breeder Haras de la Perelle for €260,000.

In a further fitting tribute to the late Lady Chryss O'Reilly, her Haras de la Louivière draft was responsible for the joint-top-priced filly of the day (lot 29), a daughter of Wootton Bassett (GB) who was bought by Jerome Glandais of Ecurie de Launay for €260,000.

Out of the unraced Sablonniere (Fr) (Verglas {Ire}), she is a full-sister to the Listed Prix Ridgway winner Dream Works (Fr) and a half to the Group 3 winner King Malpic (Fr) (King's Best).

Pair of fillies for Sumbe

Sumbe had a busy day announcing two new stallions for next year [see accompanying story] and Nurlan Bizakov's team also recruited two new yearlings on Tuesday, lots 77 and 131. The first, a daughter of Bated Breath (GB) from La Motteraye Consignment, is a half-sister to the dual Listed winner Shalromy (Fr) (Shalaa {Ire}) and was bred by Frederic and Jennifer Bianco. She was bought for €240,000 and Sumbe later went to €260,000 for a Sea The Stars (Ire) filly out of a half-sister to the Arc winner Danedream (Ger) (Lomita's {GB}) from Ecurie des Monceaux.

After signing for the Bated Breath filly, Nurlan Bizakov said, “It's a lovely family which we know well as Shalromy was born and raised at the stud for her breeders. The mare also boarded at Hesmonds Stud when she went to England to be covered. I am a fan of Bated Breath who is a consistent sire.”

One and done for Holland

Brendan Holland of Grove Stud completed his set for next year's breeze-up sales with the purchase early in the session of a colt by Siyouni (Fr) out of the Group 3-placed Over Reacted (Fr) (Planter {Ire}) from a family that includes the recent G1 Preis von Europa winner India (Ger) (Adlerflug {Ger}). Catalogued as lot 4, he was sold by Haras de Grandcamp for €175,000.

Reflecting on the yearling trade in general this year, Holland said, “I've found it difficult to buy the colts that I wanted. The market was more selective and maybe I'm getting more selective. I was also selling and the market was a bit patchier, for sure, and more selective, so that made it more difficult on both sides. 

“That was the same starting in Doncaster and all the way through Keeneland, it was difficult to buy nice colts. We had to stretch to buy the colt this morning. He's a nice colt with a good pedigree, out of a good mare by a good sire, but that type of colt is getting harder to buy.”

He added, “The spend has gone up the last five years to produce these two-year-old horses. My numbers are always around 20 to 25 horses and everyone is trying to up their quality, it's not just me, but the rest of the lads as well. The results of that have been showing on the track, too. And we're looking at a broad range of horses as well, it's not just a narrow band of two-year-old types.”

Camelot is King for Brummitt

Ecurie des Monceaux sold 20 of its 25 yearlings through the ring on Tuesday. The full-brother to Sottsass (Fr) was withdrawn on the day but among those to be sold was a Pinatubo (Ire) colt out of the Group 3 winner Pacifique (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}). Offered as lot 6, the half-brother to black-type performers Paix (Fr) (Muhaarar {GB}) and Sir Bob Parker (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}) was knocked down to Jean-Claude Rouget at €210,000. 

From the same family and eight lots later was a Camelot (GB) half-brother to the G2 Debutanate S. winner and G1 Moyglare Stud S. runner-up Vespertilio (Fr) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}). The son of Pacifique's half-sister Prudente (GB) (Dansili {GB}) was selected by an avowed fan of Camelot in Jeremy Brummitt. 

He said of lot 14, “What sets apart Camelot and Montjeu is the way they move, and this is the only yearling I've seen all year who moves in the way that I'm looking for. Nothing wins a race standing still. So I bought the horse that moves in the way that I want, because I think that's why that particular line, or those two stallions, father and son, are so good.”

Brummitt added, “He's been bought for an existing, undisclosed client called Bjorn Nielsen.”

Nielsen previously raced a close relation to this colt, English King (Fr), who is also by Camelot and is a half-brother to the yearling's dam Prudente. He won the Listed Derby Trial at Lingfield before running fifth in the Derby itself.

Talking Points

• Monceaux once again leads the vendors' list with 20 sold for €2,368,000, and Charles Briere's Fairway Consignment had a good day selling five yearlings for an average of €167,000.

• Anthony Stroud and Matt Coleman of Stroud Coleman Bloodstock were the most active of the buyers and signed for 14 lots to the tune of €2,180,000.

• Haras d'Etreham's freshman sire Hello Youmzain (Fr) continued his run of popularity at Arqana with 15 sold through the first day for an average of €78,000, which is more than three times his opening fee.

• Chachnak (Fr)? Yep, I had to look him up too. The dual Group 3-winning son of Kingman (GB) stands at Haras de la Gastine for his owner Jean-Pierre Dubois and has three members of his 33-strong first crop catalogued at Arqana this week. The first sold for €15,000 to trainer Christophe Escuder.

• In keeping with so many sales, the figures at Arqana's October edition have been increasing in recent years. The first day's aggregate this year, which weighed in at €15,581,000 for 170 sold, is not that far off the turnover for the whole sale in 2019, which stood at €16,957,000 for 414 yearlings. 

Buy of the Day 

Lot 37: Colt by Waldgeist (GB) – Sassella (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire})

Those associated with Waldgeist would probably have liked to see him have a few more winners by now but it's never wise to make judgments on stallions until at least the end of their second year with runners. As a progressive middle-distance horse bred jointly by three of the best operations in Europe it is fair to expect to see his offspring make more of an impact at three. It is also worth remembering that two of the buzz names of the year, Arc winner Ace Impact (Fr) and young sire Justify, did not appear on the racecourse until their three-year-old seasons.

In the case of lot 37, the colt was bred by one of the Waldgeist trio, Gestut Ammerland, whose impact on European racing has been pronounced over several decades, and whose presence we will miss after the stud's remaining breeding stock is sold at Arqana in December. 

Ammerland's Dietrich von Boetticher was not only the co-breeder of the colt's sire but also bred his dam and broodmare sire. Sassella won the Listed Prix Belle de Nuit, while her dam Sevenna (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) has produced another four stakes winners, including Sevenna's Knight (Ire) (Camelot {GB}), who runs in the Listed Prix Vulcain at Deauville on Thursday.

There's a lot of pedigree for that price and, if given the time he may well need, his owner and trainer could well be rewarded. The colt is heading to England to new Lambourn trainer Charlie Pike for owner Gary Gillies. Best of luck to them.

Plenty of sales folk huddled around the screen at Deauville racecourse on Sunday evening to see the home team's dreams shattered, but by Monday morning the focus was fully back on the horses and the next week of yearling action ahead. 

Before the rugby started, those present at Arqana had gathered in remembrance of Lady Chryss O'Reilly, who died only days after attending the August Sale. Frederique de Chambure, Henri Bozo, Marina Marinopoulos, Nicolas Clement and Aliette Forien all spoke movingly of their longstanding friendship with the owner-breeder and in the bright sunshine of Monday morning, it was hard not to feel that an extra shadow had been cast over Yard B on the sales grounds. The Haras de la Louviere yearlings were there as usual, in their traditional spot, but for the first time their breeder is not present. 

Orchestrating the viewings and juggling cards like the dab hand that he is, Mick O'Dwyer paused for a moment to reflect on his long association with Lady O'Reilly's draft.

“I've been doing this now for 17 years,” he said. “It's business as usual in a way, but she is very much missed. Everybody loved her.”

Sixteen yearlings are being presented by Haras de la Louviere this week, including a filly from the final crop of Le Havre (Ire) whose first three dams were all bred by Lady O'Reilly. As lot 473, she comes through later in the week, on Thursday, and is a daughter of Hailstorm (GB), a treble winner and herself a daughter of Verglas (Ire), winner of the G2 Coventry S. in the familiar black-and-white hoops.

With Ecurie des Monceaux, Lady O'Reilly's Skymarc Farm bred Vespertilio (Fr) (Nigh Of Thunder {Ire}), who won the G2 Debutante S. just a few days before her co-breeder's passing. That filly's half-brother by Camelot (GB) will be one of the earliest horses into the ring on Tuesday when presented by Monceaux as lot 14.

We also cannot mention the Monceaux draft without a reminder that lot 59 is a full-brother to Sottsass (Fr). He was bred by the farm from the celebrated mare Starlet's Sister (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and is offered alongside three yearlings in the draft from the first crop of his Arc-winning brother.

Arqana's October Sale usually plays second fiddle to its flashier August cousin but October is challenging for bragging rights this year as the sale from which Paddington (GB) (Siyouni {Fr}) graduated two years ago, also from Monceaux. August of course played its trump card a little later with Ace Impact (Fr) (Cracksman {GB}). Only on Sunday, Iresine (Fr) (Manduro {Ger}) gave another reminder of why it is worth seeing out the week and trying to unearth a bargain in the later parts of the sale. To his G1 Prix Ganay victory in the spring he added the G2 Prix du Conseil de Paris, and he is now taking aim at Equinox (Jpn) and Liberty Island (Jpn) in the Japan Cup. At his best yet at the age of six, Iresine was picked up as a yearling at the Arqana October Sale for €6,000 and his earnings, including those vital French owners' premiums, are now in excess of €1,000,000.

As the season rolls on, more and more new stallions are being announced for 2024. France in particular looks set to benefit from a bumper new crop. We already know that Ace Impact is off to Haras de Beaumont, which will doubtless be inundated with visitors once breeders descend on Deauville for the breeding stock sale in early December. Jean-Claude Rouget's top three-year-old of the previous season, the Prix du Jockey Club and Eclipse winner Vadeni (Fr) (Churchill {Ire}), joins Siyouni (Fr) and Zarak (Fr) at the Aga Khan's Haras de Bonneval.

While doing the yearling rounds on Monday morning, Fabrice Chappet said that he was looking forward to one last outing with his stable star Onesto (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) in the Breeders' Cup Turf at Santa Anita before he takes up residence at Haras d'Etreham, while Lusail (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}) has just been announced as the latest recruit to Al Shaqab's Haras de Bouquetot. In recent months, plenty have made reference to the need for France to plug the gaps left by the likes of Le Havre and Wootton Bassett (GB). In the case of the latter, the Prix de l'Abbaye winner Wooded (Ire) will be among an increasing number of a number of sons of Wootton Bassett attempting to follow in the footsteps of their illustrious father. He has his first runners next year, and 37 members of his first crop are up for grabs in Deauville this week.

Wooded, who is another Haras de Bouquetot stallion, was given an extra boost on the pedigree side this year courtesy of his brother Bucanero Fuerte (GB), winner of the G1 Phoenix S. and G2 Railway S. during a productive season. 

“That's what we are looking for now in France,” says Al Shaqab's Benoit Jeffroy. “Wootton Bassett is gone and Siyouni is getting to an age where he hasn't got another 10 years in front of him, so we are looking for the new boys.

“Wooded has a proper chance. He has some good-looking stock. They have the depth and they can move. He had the speed, so let's hope he can pass it on.”

At the same time as Wooded retired, Al Shaqab also took charge of a stallion prospect with a slightly different profile in Robert Ng's Romanised (Ire) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}), who was a star for Ken Condon's stable over four seasons. His major wins included the Irish 2,000 Guineas, followed the next year by the G1 Prix Jaques Le Marois and G2 Minstrel S., and he returned to win the latter for a second time at five.

“We are very  happy to be able to stand a horse like Romanised,” said Jeffroy. “We can only thank Mr Ng and Rupert Pritchard-Gordon for entrusting him to us and to France. Actually his stock have sold really well, because he only stands for €7,000, so the return on investment has been good for the breeders so far. It's hard to find a Guineas winner and a Jacques Le Marois winner, and he has been very well received.

“We all know that we have to go through a number of stallions to find horses that will be the next good ones, the improvers, so we keep dreaming now.”

Romanised's sole August Sale yearling, a half-sister to the Group 2 winner Boscaccio (Fr), was paid rather a compliment when bought by Edouard de Rothschild's Haras de Meautry for €170,000, and he had another four sold through the V.2 Sale for €87,000, €65,000, €55,000 and €27,000. He looks a stallion to keep an eye on and has another 37 slated to sell this week.

Frankel (GB) was all the rage, as usual, during Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale, where one of his sons became the most expensive yearling sold in Europe this year. There is just one Frankel on offer this week in Deauville and unsurprisingly he is bred in the purple. Catalogued as lot 95 from La Motteraye Consignment, the colt is a half-brother to the dual Grade I winner A Raving Beauty (Ire) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}).

Another with the potential to star towards the end of Tuesday's session is lot 210, a filly from the first crop of Ghaiyyath (Ire) whose brother New Mandate (Ire), by another Dubawi-line stallion in New Bay (GB) is a group winner in England and Australia, while further generations of the family include dual French Classic victrix Avenir Certain (Fr) (Le Havre {Ire}) and successful young sire Mehmas (Ire).

Business gets underway at 11am on Tuesday, while the following three days all begin at 2pm before a final 11am session again on Saturday.

For the first time, more than 1,200 horses were offered, with more than 1,000 of them finding new homes for a clearances rate of 82.7%. The turnover (€80,499,000) and average (€75,871) both increased, while the median settled at €31,000. In addition, 227 (+17%) horses sold for €100,000 or more, up from 193 in 2021. Four horses brought €1 million or more this year, double last year's two. One marked change was the creation of the September Yearling Sale, which replaced and extended the previous v.2 Yearling Sale, with 275 horses catalogued, an additional 100 lots from 2021.

Eric Hoyeau, President of Arqana and Freddy Powell, Executive Director, said of the combined yearling results through Friday, “Each year we reflect on the format of our sales in order to adapt to the offer. Our aim is to ensure that every yearling achieves its best possible value. In particular, we have had to change the v.2 Yearling Sale to accommodate a greater number of horses in September.

“Despite the 150 extra horses sold at the three sales, the market absorption rate remained very satisfactory, testifying to the attractiveness of French breeding at all levels and the quality of the work of our vendors. The 227 yearlings sold for €100,000 or more are further proof of this. We hope that the November Yearling Sale will continue in this vein, as will the Autumn Sale, which this time will welcome the cream of National Hunt yearlings to Deauville.”

From the family of G3 Prix Noailles winner and G1 Grand Prix de Paris second Slalom (Fr) (Intello {Ger}) and his stakes-winning and group-placed full-brother Folamour (GB) (Intello {Ger}), the February foal also traces to G3 Prix Perth heroine and quadruple black-type producer Danzigaway (Danehill). The filly's Showcasing (GB) half-brother Empathic (Fr) had won since the catalogue was published.

The last day of the sale saw 142 yearlings go under the hammer. A total of 120 (84%) of them were sold for an average price of €10,875 and a total turnover of €1,305,000. The median was €9,000.

Arqana October's stats at the end of five days' trade stood at €26,188,000 accrued for 597 horses (83%) finding new homes. The average was €43,866 (-5%) and the median was €26,000 (-5.5%).

Following the sale, Eric Hoyeau, Chairman of Arqana and Freddy Powell, Executive Director, said, “We have adapted the format of the sale to the offer, but it is not necessarily definitive. Each year we try to be as close as possible to what we perceive from the market and the production, so that each yearling is valued as much as possible.

“Following an excellent 2021 edition where the turnover had increased by 45%, the sale has gone well. A total of 69 horses were sold for €100,000 or more, compared to 62 in 2021 and 38 in 2020. Demand also remained strong and constant throughout the five days. We can only be satisfied with these results. Maintaining this would not have been possible without the work of all our vendors, whom we must thank, as well as our teams in the offices and in the yards. Let's remember that all the yearlings presented during the five days are eligible for the Arqana Series, which will start next year.”

With 26 colts and fillies sold for a total of €2,047,000, Haras d'Etreham finished at the head of the vendors' table. Second place went to Écurie des Monceaux, vendors of 17 lots for a total of €2,020,000. La Motteraye consignment completed the podium with 34 yearlings sold for €1,928,500.

Stroud Coleman Bloodstock took the top spot on the buyers' list with 10 yearlings purchased for a total of €1,482,000. Nicolas de Watrigant (Mandore International Agency) took second place with 11 yearlings bought for €901,000. Finally, Ghislain Bozo (Meridian International) took third place with 11 yearlings bought for €854,000.

Though not on the list of consignors in Deauville this week, a strong Ballylinch feel continued at Arqana on Tuesday as Haras d'Etreham's colt by Lope De Vega (Ire) (lot 240) topped the second session and final day of Part I when finally secured at €210,000. He became the latest purchase by Stroud Coleman Bloodstock, who bid via telephone through Arqana's Freddy Powell after the partners' earlier departure. The first foal of German listed winner and Classic-placed Cherry Lady (Ger) is very closely related to his dam's fellow stakes-winning half-sister Celebrity (Ger), who is by Shamardal, while Cherry Lady is herself by Soldier Hollow (GB), whose role as a broodmare sire was enhanced this year by the two Group 1 wins of Helmut von Finck's Sammarco (Ire) (Camelot {GB}). The Lope De Vega colt was consigned for his breeder Haras Voltaire by Nicolas de Chambure's Haras d'Etreham, which has enjoyed a decent two days of trade, selling 21 yearlings for €1.9 million to be second on the list of vendors.

Twenty lots later, and acting through Amelie Lemercier, American owner John Ballantyne of NBS Stables went to €160,000 for a daughter of Ballylinch freshman Waldgeist (GB) out of the listed-placed Deauville Shower (Ire) (High Chapparal {Ire}). Consigned by Elevage de Tourgeville on behalf of breeders Thierry Storme and Thierry Lohest, the bay filly (lot 260) was the most expensive of the five yearlings by Waldgeist in the sale, who sold for an average of €83,400. Meanwhile, the sextet of Lope De Vega yearlings sold has brought an average price of €176,667.

With the two days of Part I of the October Sale now in the books, another €6,131,000 was added to the ledger on Tuesday, bringing a running total for the sale to €18,955,000 with three days left to run. Tuesday's clearance rate was 81%, with 82 of the 101 yearlings sold for an average of €74,768 and median of €62,000,

Overall, the average for Part I was €76,741 with a median of €60,000 and healthy rate of lots sold at 81%.

Zarak in Demand

Anthony Stroud was back on the phone to Freddy Powell when lot 299 entered the ring and bought the Zarak (Fr) filly for €180,000 from the Haras de Hoguenet consignment. The second foal of the G2 Prix de Malleret runner-up Fuse (Fr) (Teofilo {Ire}), she was bred by Guillaume de Saint-Seine, the co-owner of GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf runner-up Malavath (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}), who will return to this year's Breeders' Cup meeting in a bid to go one better. The Wertheimer-bred Fuse hails from the family of G1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains winner Falco.

Late in the session, Mark McStay of Avenue Bloodstock was another to opt for a Zarak yearling (lot 325) when buying the half-brother to G3 Firth of Clyde S. winner Queen of Bermuda (GB) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}) for €160,000.

“There was a lot of Dubawi about him and Zarak is really making waves as an emerging young stallion. The mare has done it: she has bred two fast horses and she was fast herself. He'll be going to William Haggas.”

The colt was bred by Yeguada Centurion from the stakes-placed Haafhd (GB) mare Imperialistic Diva (GB) and consigned by Haras de l'Hotellerie. Though he was bought for a different unnamed client, McStay has done well with his purchases for Hong Kong-based owner Bon Ho, who owns the current favourite for the Melbourne Cup, the Guy Heald-bred Deauville Legend (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), who was bought by the agent at Arqana in September 2020.

Asked about the 3-year-old's travels to Melbourne, he replied, “Fingers and toes crossed. The horse travelled really well and James Ferguson is on his way out there right now. His team, led by Alison, have done a great job getting him there. There's a lot of pressure being favourite but it's a great position to be in. Mr Ho and his wife are flying out there and so am I. It's a great experience to be involved in. He's a fantastic horse who has already done us all proud so hopefully he can run well.”

French Trainers in Clover

Deauville-based trainer Stephane Wattel signed up the most expensive offspring in the sale of another first-season sire, Calyx (GB). Lot 237, out of the listed-winning Arch mare Cheriearch, is a half-brother to Al Shaqab's G3 Prix de Fontainebleau winner Welwal (Fr) (Shalaa {Ire}) and was bred in partnership by Ariane Gravereaux, OTI Racing and Oceanic Bloodstock, was bought from the Haras des Capucines draft for €170,000 and will race for a syndicate led by Peter Savill. The owner-breeder and former BHB chairman has put together a group of friends from Britain, Ireland, France and Australia with the intention of racing four juveniles in France next season.

Jean-Claude Rouget and Michel Zerolo continued their support for the stock of Wootton Bassett (GB) when signing for lot 289 at €170,000 from La Motteraye Consignment. From the further family of Superstar Leo (Ire) and One Master (GB), the daughter of juvenile winner Fille Du Septembre (Ire) (Choisir {Aus}) was bred in partnership by Gwen Monneraye and Lucie Lamotte with Gerard Ferron.

Wootton Bassett has had a strong representation at Arqana so far this week, and 21 members of his final French-conceived crop have proved popular, selling for an average of €134,619.

Christophe Ferland will take charge of lot 272, a Night Of Thunder (Ire) granddaughter of G3 Prix des Reservoirs winner Emily Bronte (GB) (Machiavellian), who was bought by Arthur Hoyeau for €160,000. Bred by Ecurie de Cachene and consigned on their behalf by Edwige Le Metayer's Haras du Buff, the filly is the first foal of Dubai Opera (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), a sister to Group 3 winner Lockwood (GB).

At Monceaux, Sharing is Caring

Victor Kiam famously said of Remington shavers, 'I liked it so much I bought the company' and through Peter Brant is unlikely to be able to secure Siyouni (Fr) himself from the Aga Khan, he has invested plenty in his stock over recent seasons and struck for another of his yearlings on Tuesday. The filly (lot 239), bought for €170,000 in the name of White Birch Farm, is out of the unraced Cherriya (Fr), a Montjeu (Ire) half-sister to the treble Group 1 winner Cherry Mix (Fr) (Linamix {Fr}).

She was consigned by Ecurie des Monceaux, the sale's leading vendor who on Monday had sold a Wootton Bassett filly bred by various members of the Monceaux staff for €210,000. Eleven individuals were involved in the breeding syndicate, including former yearling manager Antoine Bellanger–who now runs his own Arcadia Elevage consignment–his successor Jordan Tancrede, Charlotte Andre, and broodmare manager Bruno Dieuaide.

Tancrede, whose job it is to oversee the prep of the Monceaux yearlings, explained, “Henri Bozo bought the mare Avocate for the staff and asked me if I wanted to be involved. We had a Siyouni colt from the first year and sold him in the August Sale for €80,000. But then this was a big surprise, the price the Wootton Bassett filly made. She was a very nice filly but we thought she might make something like €110,000, not €210,000.”

The daughter of the Lawman (Fr) mare Avocate (Fr), from the family of Group 1 winners Ectot (Ire) and Most Improved (Ire), will race in America for Klaravich Stables.

Sea The Stars (Ire) was the sire of the top Ecurie des Monceaux, that juggernaut of a French sales consignment, was the session's leading vendor, and Stroud Coleman Bloodstock the leading buyer, but Haras d'Etrenham also enjoyed a good day, selling 18 yearlings for an average price in excess of €85,000, and the buyers' list, which naturally featured many local names, also included three purchases for Klaravich Stables as well as a number of Australian interests.

As ever, a reshuffled format, with an expanded Part I, makes a year-on-year comparison tricky, but for the record, a decent day of trade saw 165 yearlings sold (81%) for an average of €77,479 and median of €55,000. The first-day tally stood at €12,784,000.

It's the diehards hanging in there now as the 2022 yearling season begins its steady descent, having generally flown higher than ever, amid the odd bout of turbulence, from Arqana August to Tattersalls October and everything else in between. Those people you were delighted to see strutting around Deauville in swanky shorts in August have moderated their stride to a resigned shuffle and their daily greeting to not much more than a grunt. And who can blame them? We've all seen each other week after week for the last two months, through thousands of yearlings and over endless cups of coffee and the odd bottle of wine. The bonhomie has been replaced by Berocca. 

But, in Normandy this week there are still plenty of reasons to be cheerful. As ever, when there is racing on next door, the sales schedule is dictated by the stakes-race programme, so Tuesday's action in the ring will begin at 2pm once the Prix des Reservoirs and Prix Zeddaan have been run. 'Tis a marvellous three-day meeting this week at the Hippodrome de la Touques, and one which can drop plenty of clues for next year. Take last year's Prix de Saint-Desir for unraced 2-year-olds, for example. Won by Erevann (Fr), who has subsequently won the G2 Prix Daniel Wildenstein and finished third in the G1 Prix Jacques le Marois, the race also featured G2 Prix Guillaume d'Ornano winner and Arc fourth Al Hakeem (GB), Poule d'Essai des Poulains third Tribalist (GB), and G2 Prix Niel winner Simca Mille (Ire).

Plenty of these yearlings will end up on Deauville's hallowed turf in the years to come, but not the duo of fillies by Wootton Bassett (GB) who provided an early reminder of the international forces still at play when signed for by Michel Zerolo on behalf of American-based Klaravich Stables, which has had such noted success on the US turf with graduates of the Tattersalls October Sale trained by Chad Brown. Zerolo's recruitment on the owner's behalf included lot 90, the late May filly out of Rhodalia (GB), a daughter of Galileo (Ire) and the GI Beverley D S. winner Royal Highness (Ger), at €250,000. This purchase followed the earlier strike for lot 29, the first foal of the G3 Prix de Royaumont runner-up Malevra (Fr) (Le Havre {Ire}), herself a grand-daughter of the Oaks d'Italia winner Lady Bentley (GB) (Bellypha {Ire}).

Audarya (Fr), bought from this sale by Anthony Stroud five years ago, advertised to a wider audience the scope of Wootton Bassett's capabilities when winning the GI Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf, and the sire was met with approval by American buyers on Monday as lot 97, the Le Thenney-bred filly out of Salve Sicilia (Ger) (Soldier Hollow {GB}), was sold by La Motteraye Consignment to Steven Rocco at €140,000. The filly's dam is another to have a European Oaks winner as her grand-dam, this one the G1 Preis der Diana winner Salve Regina (Ger) (Monsun {Ger}), the sister to Samum (Ger) and Schiaparelli (Ger). 

The top price of the day, the supplemented lot 111b, a Sea The Stars (Ire) colt, was taking his second turn in the Arqana ring in two months, as he was signed for during the August Sale by Chauvigny Global Equine at €675,000. Reoffered here by by co-breeder Haras du Mont Dit Mont to dissolve a partnership, the first foal of listed winner Shamtee (Ire), who is both by Shamardal and from his family (the colt's fourth dam is Irish Oaks winner Helen Street) was bought by David Menuisier at €340,000.

“He will come back to England and we'll try to do our best with him,” said the Sussex-based French trainer. “He has been on our radar for some time as he was here in August but the sale didn't go through. He has been bought for a client who has supported my stable for a long time.” The colt was later listed as bought by Didier Reed's Prime Equestrian. 

Phillipe and Gitte Allaire of Haras de Bouttemont stepped in to buy a strapping daughter of Lope De Vega (Fr) from Coulonces Sales. Offered as lot 200 on behalf of Elisabeth Fabre's Haras de Saint Laurent, the chestnut filly is out of the Listed Prix Dahlia winner Alzubra (GB) (Dansili {GB}) and is a full-sister to Arapaho, a stakes winner in both France and Australia. 

“She has three black-type siblings and we thought she was really elegant,” said Gitte Allaire. “We would like to breed from her later as she has such a lovely pedigree. Now we just have to find a nice name for her.”

Anthony Stroud and Michel Zerolo accounted for the next six lots in descending price order. The Sea The Stars colt from JK Thoroughbreds (lot 164) will race for Godolphin after being signed for by Stroud at €300,000. A three-quarter brother to young Haras du Logis stallion Cloth Of Stars (Ire) out of the War Command mare Warless (Ire), he has one of the strongest pages in the book, which includes the Oaks winner Light Shift (Ire), her son Ulysses (Ire) and the mare's full-sister Shiva (Jpn), both of whom are Group 1 winners. 

Acting on behalf of a client of trainer Simon Crisford, Stroud also signed for Haras du Quesnay's Nathaniel (Ire) colt (lot 144) whose dam Toride (Fr) (Fuisse {Fr}) is a haf-sister to Treve (Fr) and who is already a black-type producer herself, with listed winner Lady Day (Fr) (Motivator {GB}) and Group 3-placed Maximus (Fr) (Intello {Ger}) to her credit.

“We thought he was a very well-balanced, good-moving horse,” Stroud noted. “Nathaniel is of course a Derby-winning sire and this is a good family going back to Treve, and from a wonderful farm that keeps producing good horses.”

Further international interest was provided by Australian agent John Foote, a regular at this auction, who signed for lot 9, Haras d'Ombreville's daughter of Almanzor out of the Listed Winterkonigin Trial winner Komische (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}), for €140,000.

The breeze-up boys (and some girls) were still hard at it in Deauville. It will be worth keeping an eye on the Dubawi (Ire) colt bought by Mags O'Toole and Norman Williamson for €150,000 from the Monceaux draft (lot 48). When a yearling by a top sire sells for relatively little, there can be a tendency to think 'what was wrong?', but it's also easy to imagine that those blockbuster names can be off-putting to some who may assume that buyers with deeper pockets will be there to pick them off. 

Williamson is a passed master of turning a well-bred individual into a stellar breezer, and he did so with a Dubawi colt last year. The St Leger winner Eldar Eldarov (GB), who is one of three Group 1 winners in three countries for breeder Kirsten Rausing in 2022, mystifyingly made 'only' £110,000 as a yearling and returned to the Arqana Breeze-up to sell for £480,000. On paper the yearling colt bought on Monday has claims to be every bit as classy as Eldar Eldarov: the first foal of his winning dam Mulan (Ire) (Kingman {GB}), his relatives scattered about the page include Chicquita (Ire), Magic Wand (Ire), Magical Romance (GB) and Channel (Ire).

Tom Whitehead of Powerstown Stuf recruited 12 yearlings at Keeneland in September along with those bought in Europe. The latest batch includes a filly by Siyouni (Fr) from Haras d'Etreham, who was  for €130,000. Her dam Lady Baker (Pioneerof The Nile) is a daughter of the dual Group 3 winner Peace Royale (Ger) (Sholokhov {Ire}) whose other offspring include the stakes-winning fillies Peace In Motion (Hat Trick) and Peace Society (Iffraaj {GB}).

Underlining the increasing scope in pedigree recruited by those working the breeze-up sector, the same family attracted the attention of Mick Murphy of Longways Stable, who went to €180,000 for lot 68 from Haras d'Etreham. The Lope De Vega colt is out of Penny Lane (Ger) (Lord Of England {Ger}), a Listed-winning half-sister to the aforementioned Peace Royale from a black-type-laden German family.
