Donegal Racing's Shamrocket made a victorious debut on dirt Saturday at Gulfstream Park after 21 turf starts, rallying late to capture the $75,000 Sunshine Classic, a 1 1/8-mile race for older Florida-breds.

The Sunshine Classic co-headlined Saturday's program with the $75,000 Sunshine Sprint, a six-furlong race for older Florida-breds.

Shamrocket, a winner of one turf stakes with more than $400,000 in earnings, was sent to post as the 6-5 favorite in a field of seven.

“He's always trained well on it, and we were kind of looking for the right time to give it a try. I talked to [stable operator] Jerry Crawford and decided to go ahead and give it a try,” Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher said. “It could open up some options for him. I think he's a horse that might even handle some of these longer dirt races, marathon-type dirt races, down the road. I'm happy for the horse and proud of him for getting the job done.

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

Shamrocket had to work hard to prevail by a half-length over gutsy Sir Ollie, who had come under pressure throughout the Sunshine Classic. The Pletcher trainee settled in fourth along the backstretch, where a headstrong Big Venezuela dragged jockey Luis Saez to a brief lead before early pacesetter Sir Ollie regained the lead on the turn under Junior Alvarado, only to be headed by a three-wide Nacho Papa on the turn into the stretch. Hall of Fame jockey Javier Castellano got Shamrocket rolling on the turn and swung the 5-year-old son of Tonalist four-wide for the stretch run. Sir Ollie kicked on in the stretch but fell just shy of holding off the steady stretch bid by the favorite.

“I had a perfect trip. I didn't want to be too far back because he's the one-run type of horse. I didn't want him to think too much and didn't want him to get too much dirt in his face or get bounced around in his first race on dirt,” Castellano said. “I put him and the game and took it from there. I give all the credit to Todd Pletcher.”

Shamrocket, who finished second in the 2021 Sunshine Turf, ran 1 1/8-miles in 1:52.26 after sitting off fractions of 24.81 and 49.71 seconds for the first half-mile.

“I was a little concerned. There wasn't much pace on, and he wants to come from off of it,” Pletcher said. “Javier did a good job of not taking him out of his running style but tried to keep him close enough to be in striking distance.”

Sir Ollie held second following a game performance, 1 ½ lengths ahead of Nacho Papa.

Gatsby broke through with his first stakes victory Saturday at Gulfstream Park, capturing the $75,000 Sunshine Sprint by 1 ¼ lengths following a race-long duel with favored Cool Quest.

The Arindel homebred pressed Cool Quest past fractions of 21.75 and 44.23 seconds for the first half-mile of the six-furlong sprint for older Florida-breds, before edging away in the stretch to complete the the distance in 1:09.11.

Gatsby, the 2-1 second betting choice, was well-respected by the bettors following a gritty second-place finish to Grade 1 winner Drain the Clock in a Dec. 10 Gulfstream allowance, in which he pressed the pace before falling a half-length short of victory.

“That was kind of a preparation for this race. Having Drain the Clock in that race was really tough,” trainer Carlos David said. “When he ran a fast race like that, we knew he'd be competitive in this race.”

Leading jockey Luis Saez rode Gatsby to victory. Cool Quest finished second under Julien Leparoux, 3 ¼ lengths ahead of Pudding and jockey Javier Castellano.

Jockey Edgard Zayas and trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. successfully defended their Spring/Summer Meet titles Sunday at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla.

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

Zayas, who clinched his third-straight Spring/Summer Meet title outright with a victory aboard the Joseph-trained Baby Lion in Race 3, finished five wins ahead of Emisael Jaramillo, who took the Spring/Summer Meet title in 2018. Zayas, who went on to ride Joseph-trained La Chica Lateral in Race 9, finished with 124 wins, while Jaramillo (119) and Miguel Vasquez (101) also exceeded the 100-win mark.

“I have to thank all the owners, all the trainers for all their support all the time,” said Zayas, whose stellar meet was punctuated by his victory aboard Bill Mott-trained Outfoxed in Saturday's $400,000 My Dear Girl, the FTBOA Florida Sire Stakes finale for 2-year-old fillies sired by accredited Florida stallions. “I also want to thank my agent (Tito Fuentes) and my family. It's the whole team, not just the jockey and the horse. It's the whole team behind them.”

Joseph, who won the 2020 Spring/Summer Meet title with 59 wins, saddled a pair of winners on Sunday's program to push his meet-topping total to 71 victories, 36 more than runner-up Carlos David and eight more than Antonio Sano.

Arindel led all owners during the Spring/Summer Meet with 17 winners, most notably Octane, a homebred son of Brethren who captured Saturday's $400,000 FSS In Reality, as well as the $200,000 FSS Affirmed in his previous start. Moshe Mark finished second in the owner's standings with 10 winners.

The Fall Meet gets underway on Thursday, when the 20-cent Rainbow 6 jackpot pool will be guaranteed at $350,000.

The popular multi-race wager went unsolved Sunday for the 10th racing day since a Sept. 10 mandatory payout produced multiple payoffs of $313,299.84

The Rainbow 6 jackpot is paid out when there is a single unique ticket sold with all six winners. On days when there is no unique ticket, 70 percent of that day's pool goes back to those bettors holding tickets with the most winners, while 30 percent is carried over to the jackpot pool.

Thursday's Rainbow 6 sequence will span Races 3-8, including three races on the newly constructed Tapeta course. Race 3, a maiden claiming race for juvenile fillies at 5 ½ furlongs on the all-weather surface, will kick off the sequence. Race 5, a 5 ½-furlong maiden special weight race for 2-year-old fillies, and Race 7, a mile-and-70-yard starter allowance for 3-year-olds and up, will also be run over the all-weather surface.

<ins data-revive-zoneid=166 data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

<ins data-revive-zoneid=167 data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

Coming off a front-running score in the $200,000 Affirmed, the seven-furlong second leg of the lucrative series for Florida-sired juveniles, Octane offered a repeat performance while carrying his natural speed around two turns for the first time.

The homebred son of Brethren broke alertly from his No. 7 post position to take the lead on the first turn and show the way along the backstretch, where he came under strong pressure to his outside by Cattin. Octane put away Cattin on the far turn, where Cajun's Magic, the Affirmed runner-up, launched his bid after saving ground behind the pacesetters. The winner of the first leg of the FSS Series, the $100,000 Dr. Fager, kicked in through the stretch but was no match for Octane, the even-money favorite who scored by 1 ¾ lengths to win his third straight race since finishing second in his career debut.

The Carlos David-trained Octane ran 1 1/16 miles in 1:43.97 under Emisael Jaramillo. Cajun's Magic, who was ridden by Jesus Rios, finished 6 ½ lengths clear of third-place finisher Cattin.

“I have plenty of confidence in Jaramillo. He's a great rider. He's one of the top jocks here in the summer and in the winter, as well. The plan was, obviously, he's got speed, so we don't want to take that away from him. Just break good, sit outside a little bit and whenever he wants to make the lead, let him do it and see where he goes,” David said. “He's got that speed and every time you have a horse that goes to the lead [distance] is always a question. I'm just glad he was able to do it. He's got a lot of talent.”

Octane exceeded the early expectations of Arindel stable manager Brian Cohen with his impressive two-turn debut.

“It's great. Carlos has done a great job. Back before we sent him to Carlos, he worked one time on the farm super-fast. I wanted to send him a good one. He's a little horse and Carlos does great with these speed horses,” Cohen said. “I never thought that he'd be doing the mile and a sixteenth. He just gets out there and doesn't stop. We're so happy. We have the perfect rider for him. It was just a great effort and a great effort by those guys.”

By passing the two-turn test in the In Reality, his connections have reason to at least take a look at the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile at Del Mar Thoroughbred Club in Del Mar, Calif., Nov. 5.

“We'll see how the numbers come back and we'll talk to Carlos and see how we fit,” Cohen said. “No rush, but we'll make a decision in the next week or so.”

The FSS series finals for 2-year-olds sired accredited Florida stallions will be supported on Saturday's program by the $125,000 FSS Wildcat Heir, a mile stakes for 3-year-olds and up sired by accredited Florida Stallions, and the $100,000 Hollywood Beach, a five-furlong turf sprint for 2-year-olds.

LNJ Foxwoods' Outfoxed, a breathtaking 13 ½-length winner of the $200,000 FSS Susan's Girl Aug. 28 at Gulfstream, is the star attraction in the My Dear Girl. The Bill Mott-trained daughter of Valiant Minister has subsequently had a pair of half-mile breezes at Gulfstream.

Outfoxed broke her maiden in the seven-furlong Susan's Girl while coming off a third-place finish behind Echo Zulu in a Saratoga maiden special weight race July 15. Echo Zulu came right back to capture the Sept. 5 Spinaway (G1) at Saratoga.

Stonehedge LLC's Cajun's Magic, the winner of the $100,000 FSS Dr. Fager, and Arindel's Octane, who captured the $200,000 FSS Affirmed, are slated to clash in the In Reality around two turns. Octane led throughout the Affirmed while finishing 3 ¼ lengths clear of runner-up Cajun's Magic.

Gulfstream will also host the Taste at the Track event Saturday Bourbon & BBQ. The unlimited testing event begins at 1 p.m. in the Flamingo Room.

Arindel's Key Biscayne rallied from well off the pace to capture Saturday's $75,000 Monroe Stakes at Gulfstream Park, providing jockey Chantal Sutherland with her fourth victory of the day.

“I'm so grateful. I'm grateful to God, and I'm grateful to Gulfstream for being so amazing,” said Sutherland, who was greeted by an enthusiastic round of cheers from fans in the grandstand and on the apron upon her return to the winner's circle. “It's been really nice here.”

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

Riding for the first time during the Spring/Summer Meet at Gulfstream, Sutherland continued to make her presence felt Saturday with victories aboard Hot Babe ($5.20) in Race 3, Hard Ten ($2.80) in Race 8, and Clapton ($20.20) in Race 9 prior to her victory aboard Key Biscayne ($14.40) in the Race 10 feature. The 45-year-old native of Winnipeg, Manitoba, who has ridden more than 1100 winners during her career, sits seventh in the Spring/Summer Meet standings with 30 wins.

“I'm so happy it's worked out the way it did. Thanks to [trainer] Kenny McPeek, who helped me get fit to do this during the winter,” said Sutherland, who had taken time off due to the Covid-19 pandemic before galloping and breezing horses for McPeek during Gulfstream's Championship Meet.

Key Biscayne, who raced in tough stakes company on turf last year while finishing fourth in the Grade 2 Lake Placid, third in the Saratoga Oaks, and fifth in the Grade 1 Belmont Oaks Invitational, was hardly disadvantaged when the Monroe, a 1 1/16-mile race for fillies and mares, was transferred to the main track. The homebred 4-year-old daughter of Brethren was previously undefeated in two races transferred to dirt, having broken her maiden over a fast Gulfstream Park track and rolling to a dominating allowance victory at Belmont last year.

Key Biscayne settled of a solid early pace set by Thissmytime, the 3-5 favorite, who showed the way during fractions of :22.80 and 46.10 seconds for the first half-mile. Starship Nterprise made a strong move on the turn into the homestretch to pull alongside the tiring pacesetter and took a lead into the stretch. Meanwhile, Key Biscayne was making a three-wide sweep on the final turn to enter contention. Starship Nterprise, who captured the Martha Washington on turf last time out, kicked in nicely in the stretch but would prove unable to hold off the wide-and-driving Key Biscayne, who scored by a neck in her second start of the year.

“I had worked her and I worked another horse I've won on for Arindel. I loved how they worked,” said Sutherland. “I had so much confidence going into the race. I just love the way she handles everything.”

Key Biscayne ran the one-turn mile over a fast track in 1:36.90. Global Brand finished third, 2 ¼ lengths behind Starship Nterprise. Thissmytime finished fourth.

Key Biscayne and Clapton were two of three winners that were owned and bred by Arindel. They also won the fourth race with Gilligan.
