Argentinian champion and U.S. Grade I winner Ivar (Brz) (Agnes Gold {Jpn}) is preparing for his Southern Hemisphere homecoming next month, when he will take up stud duty at Haras Carampangue in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The 7-year-old, who was campaigned by Kentucky-based Bonne Chance Farm and its South American partner Stud RDI, began quarantine shortly after his second-place finish in the GI Pegasus World Cup Turf Invitational S. and will depart for his new home at the end of April, leaving him plenty of time to adapt to his second career before the breeding season begins in August.

While the Southern Hemisphere breeding season is still months away, breeders in Argentina are already eager to send their mares to millionaire Ivar. Bonne Chance Farm CEO Alberto Figueiredo estimated that the new stallion will breed around 140 mares in his first season.

“All the good breeders and important names in the industry in Argentina are interested,” Figueiredo said. “There is general excitement about the horse. When you are in the stallion business, you have to pray that everything keeps going as you hope, but at least we are providing him with the best support he can have.”

Ivar's breeder and co-owner Stud Rio Dois Irmaos (Stud RDI) has retained a 55% ownership share in the stallion, but the syndicate also includes Haras Carampangue–the farm where he will stand–as well as Haras Abolengo, Gran Muneca, San Benito, La Nora and Santa Maria de Araras.

Haras Carampangue is home to four other stallions including 2013 GI Frank E. Kilroe Mile S. winner Suggestive Boy (Easing Along) and 2013 GI Hollywood Derby victor Seek Again (Speightstown).

Argentinian breeders are already more than familiar with Ivar from his undefeated 2-year-old season there in 2019, where he claimed two Group 1 victories and was named champion 2-year-old colt before shipping to the U.S. Under the tutelage of Paulo Lobo, Ivar was a winner in his second start in North America and then claimed the GI Turf Mile S. at Keeneland four months later. He ran third the following season in the GI Breeders' Cup Mile and last year, won the Jonathan B. Schuster Memorial S. and placed in two additional Grade I competitions.

Following his second-place finish in the GI Pegasus Turf in January, the decision was made for Ivar to retire. Figueiredo said that, had the horse won the Pegasus, they might have considered a trip to the Saudi Cup or keeping him in training for one last Keeneland spring meet, but ultimately they chose to give Ivar plenty of time to get through quarantine and let down before the fall breeding season.

“He ran in 11 Grade I races in his career and was so competitive, so we needed to look toward his second career,” he explained. “Since his first race in Argentina, he showed that he had a ton of potential and that he was a freak. He was a different horse. He won on the dirt and the turf and he ran until he was a 6-year-old, so he showed versatility, durability and soundness. He ran in three Breeders' Cups in a row. He was a tough boy.”

Figueiredo said that a stud fee is not yet set for Ivar's first year, but noted that he believes there is a good space in the Argentinian market for a stallion with his credentials. Ivar's sire Agnes Gold, a son of Sunday Silence who stood in Japan and Florida before making his mark in Brazil as a three-time leading sire, passed away in 2019.

Ivar was one of the first top-level performers to bring attention to Bonne Chance Farm, which is located off Pisgah Pike in Versailles and was founded by Brazilian businessman Gilberto Sayao Da Silva. Silva is a partner in Stud RDI, a breeding and racing operation established in 2008 with locations in Brazil and Argentina. In 2015, he launched Bonne Chance as his own boutique commercial farm in Kentucky.

Bonne Chance Bloodstock Manager Leah Alessandroni spoke on the significance of Ivar carrying the farm's silks to Grade I success so soon after the operation was off its feet.

“To have a horse like Ivar come up here and do what he did, holding his own against some of the best in the world on the turf and really showing up at the biggest stage every time, it's kind of hard to quantify what that means for a young organization like us. It's definitely something that we're thankful for every day and the significance is not lost on us.”

Of course Ivar is not the only success story of South American-breds performing at the top of the game in the U.S. for the Bonne Chance and Stud RDI partnership. Top performers include In Love (Brz), a gelding son of Agnes Gold who followed Ivar to victory in the GI Keeneland Turf Mile S. in 2021, and Imperador (Arg) (Treasure Beach {GB}), winner of the 2021 GII Calumet Turf Cup S. Now back at Stud RDI, Imperador bred over 80 mares in his first book and is expecting his first foals to hit the ground this year.

“There is a pipeline of these outstanding racehorses coming from the programs in Brazil and Argentina,” Alessandroni said of the Stud RDI operation. “The program that they've built there is so underappreciated on a global scale. When you look at the numbers and what they've done in South America with groups of horses that arguably aren't as respected as much as they should be, they have kind of forced people to look at the South American product and respect it.”

“To have even a little bit of that influence through Bonne Chance is awesome,” she continued. “I feel like we're sleeping on a giant because I'm so excited to see the future for Ivar as a stallion, but also for the future of the partnership of Stud RDI and Bonne Chance.”

At Bonne Chance, Ivar's dam May Be Now (Smart Strike) is creating her own pipeline of future broodmares for the Kentucky operation. Her 2-year-old Open Heart, a May-foaled daughter of Yoshida, was retained by the farm and is in the early stages of training under Paulo Lobo.

This year she produced a filly by Uncle Mo. Alessandroni said that they will take a few months to let the Mar. 11-foaled filly develop before deciding if she would be pointed toward the racetrack or the sales ring.

“She definitely favors Uncle Mo, which is one of the reasons why we bred the mare to him because we were looking for that type. She's a good mover out in the field and is a very quality filly. We're really excited about her.”

May Be Now was acquired as a yearling by Stud RDI and was a Group 2 winner in Brazil. She spent her first few years as a broodmare there before returning to the U.S. shortly after producing Ivar. She was sold in foal to Hard Spun in 2017, but was bought back by Bonne Chance as Ivar was making a name for himself.

In a few years, the team at Bonne Chance hopes to be represented by sons and daughters of Ivar. Because Southern Hemisphere horses are at a disadvantage early in their racing career as they are born in the later months of the year, Figueiredo said that Stud RDI's Ivar babies will likely race as 2-year-olds in Argentina and those that show promise will ship to the U.S. after their juvenile season.

“We would be really excited by that,” Figueiredo said enthusiastically.

Dance Brightly (Mr. Prospector–Dance Smartly, by Danzig) died at the age of 27 in Chile, Turf Diario reported.

The Sam-Son Farm homebred raced for trainer Mark Frostad and ran out a maiden special weight winner at Woodbine in October 1997. The Ontario-bred then ran second in the Listed Coronation Futurity later in his juvenile season, but was ultimately retired due to an injury suffered in a workout in 1998.

A son of Canadian Horse of the Year and Canadian Triple Crown heroine Dance Smartly started his stud career at Hill 'n' Dale Farm in Kentucky in 1999 and shuttled to Haras La Quebrada in Argentina. He later moved permanently to Chile at Haras Carioca beginning in the autumn of 2004. At stud, the bay sired 26 black-type winners, 11 of them graded/group winners. His quintet of top-level winners are led by Mea Domina, who took the GI Gamely H. and the South American Group 1 winners Sabor a Triunfo (Chi), Montignac (Chi), Mama Delia (Arg), and Esta Bailando (Chi). A total of 17 black-type winners have been produced from his daughters, with Irish Glory (Chi) (Irish Brother {Arg}) the only one at group level.

Dance Brightly is a full-brother to Canadian Champion 3-Year-Old Filly Dancethruthedawn (Mr. Prospector), who also took Saratoga's GI Go for Wand H., as well as dual Canadian Classic hero Scatter The Gold (Mr. Prospector), and the graded-placed Dance to Destiny (Mr. Prospector). A half-brother, Dance With Ravens (A.P. Indy), won the GII Grey Breeders' Cup S., and another half-sibling, the Thunder Gulch mare Dancethruthestorm, is the granddam of GI Northern Dancer Turf S. hero Say The Word (More Than Ready), who was also named the Canadian Champion Turf Male in 2020.

The second dam is the influential blue hen Classy 'N Smart (Smarten), who was also a Canadian champion. In addition to Dance Smartly, she foaled Grade II winner Strike Smartly (Mr. Prospector) and the GI Philip H. Iselin H. hero Smart Strike (Mr. Prospector), who became a top sire; as well as Grade I winner Full of Wonder (Mr. Prospector).

“I have been looking for a Galileo descendant for years, but not just any horse; I wanted a good one,” said auctioneer and breeder Antonio Bullrich.

Group-placed as a juvenile, the former Aidan O'Brien trainee ran second in the G3 Ballysax S. and third in the G3 Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial in the spring of his 3-year-old year.

In a deal organized by Chris Baccari, the Breeze Easy LLC of Sam Ross and Mike Hall have purchased Far Away Love, one of the leading fillies of the current 3-year-old crop in Argentina.

In her most recent start, Far Away Love took third in the Group 1 Gran Premio Seleccion-Argentine Oaks over ten furlongs on dirt at Palermo, on Oct. 9, after disputing the lead through a six furlong fraction of 1:09.26

The Gran Premio Seleccion was just the third start of Far Away Love's career. She debuted at Palermo on Aug. 14, in a six-furlong maiden event, which she took by five lengths. Far Away Love returned a month later for the G2 Clasico Francisco J. Beazley over nine furlongs. Leading throughout, she scored by five lengths from Super Bijou, who was only beaten a neck in the Seleccion, running a spectacular 1:47.02.

Far Away Love comes from an Argentine shuttle crop sired by Violence, who in addition to North American Grade 1 winners Volatile, No Parole and Dr. Schivel, and current undefeated classic prospect Newgrange, has sired Argentine Group 1 winners Fiel Amigo and Dandy Del Barrio, both successful at the “Estrellas” meeting, Argentina's equivalent to the Breeders' Cup.

Far Away Love's dam, the Not For Sale mare, Far Away Eyes, was a winner in Argentina, and is a sister to Blues For Sale. A three-time group stakes winner in her native country, Blues For Sale is dam of Blue Prize, who captured the G1 Gran Premio Seleccion before coming to the U.S., where her successes included back-to-back scores in the G1 Spinster Stakes, and a victory over the year's champion older mare, Midnight Bisou, in the Breeders' Cup Distaff. Three days after her Breeders' Cup win, Blue Prize topped the Fasig-Tipton November Sales, falling to a bid of $5 million from OXO Equine. Blue Prize's half-sister, Blue Stripe, captured the G1 Gran Premio Criadores, and is now in training at Santa Anita.

In addition to Blues For Sale, Far Away Eyes is also a sister to Cure For Sale, a listed winner in Argentina, and a Keeneland allowance winner, and multiple graded placed while racing in the U.S.

Key Cure, the second dam of Far Away Love, is a daughter of Cure the Blues, who was a five time winner in the U.S. before being exported to Argentina. She descends from the Ladies Handicap heroine, Sea Saga, ancestress of 11 Grade 1 winners, also including General Challenge, Notable Career, Evening Jewel, Denman's Call and A Shin Hikari, as well Southern Halo, multiple leading sire in Argentina, and responsible for More Than Ready during his time in the U.S.

Said Breeze Easy managing partner Mike Hall: “We watched film of Far Away Love's races, and were very impressed by the raw talent she's shown right from the start of her career. She's very fast and can clearly carry that speed. She is also lightly-raced, and has the potential to keep improving. It was appealing that she was by an up-and-coming U.S. sire, and so closely related to Blue Prize, which gives her a pedigree page that would be recognized anywhere in the world. We're very excited for her racing career in the U.S., and think she'll make a tremendous broodmare down the line.”

A 4-year-old of 2022 by Northern Hemisphere time, Far Away Love arrived in the U.S. on Feb. 5, and after completing quarantine, she will acclimatize at a training center in Florida, before commencing her U.S. racing career.

Made You Look saw his greatest success early in his career with trainer Todd Pletcher and owners Let's Go Stable and Three Chimneys Farm, winning the Grade 2 With Anticipation Stakes as a 2-year-old, competing in the 2016 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf at Santa Anita Park, and beginning his 3-year-old season with a score in the G3 Dania Beach Stakes.

Three Chimneys bought out its share in the colt for $190,000 at the 2017 Fasig-Tipton Summer Selected Horses of Racing Age Sale, and he was moved to the barn of trainer Chad Brown the following season, where he consistently ran in graded stakes company, including a runner-up effort in the G3 Poker Stakes.

Rigney Racing acquired Made You Look privately in late 2019, and put him in training with Philip Bauer, where he remained for the rest of his on-track career through the end of 2021.

Bred in Kentucky by the Robert and Beverly Lewis Trust, Made You Look is out of the unplaced Unbridled's Song mare Night and Day. His second dam is the Hall of Famer Serena's Song.

Made You Look joins Grade 3-placed stakes winner Gidu and French Group 1 winner Full Mast on the Haras Gran Muñeca stallion roster.

Sky Racing World is excited to announce a substantial boost to its content portfolio of International Racing by facilitating the International commingling of wagering pools with host pools in Argentina on racing at Palermo Racetrack, Buenos Aires. On Monday, Jan. 3, the commingling of pools was made available for the first time ever on Argentinian horse racing from the Hipódromo Argentino de Palermo for the American, Canadian, Caribbean and other International markets. PGI (owned by Tabcorp) is the exclusive International Commingling hub for connecting into Palermo pools.

Simulcast is now available for all Palermo meetings on the SRW website, ADW websites, and the SRW App. The races will take place every Monday, including a mix of races on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday with first post at approximately 3 PM EST. The weekend dates change monthly and you can see the full calendar here.

<ins data-revive-zoneid=23 data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

<ins data-revive-zoneid=177 data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

This exciting news is all possible thanks to the work done by the Board and Management of Hipódromo Argentino de Palermo and their work with the government to pass legislation that allows international commingling. The Hipódromo Argentino de Palermo is home to some time-honored events, like the Estrellas Classic, Gran Premio Selección and the Gran Premio Nacional (The Argentine Derby) which started back in 1884.

American and Argentinian breeding have a rich connection that goes back many years. A great example of this is Pure Prize, a Grade 2 winner who sired Grade 1 performers in both countries. In total, Pure Prize has sired 13 crops of racing age and combined progeny earnings of nearly $75 million. He's not alone, as other great stallions Blue Prize and Hi Happy were bred in Argentina before moving north to win major races there. More recently, we saw Gouverneur Morris move over to Argentina when sold, after being a hopeful for the 2020 Kentucky Derby.

Kenny McPeek's eye for finding stars away from the spotlight is well known, and Thoroughbred Daily News reports that the trainer is once again going off the beaten path in his search for elite racehorses.

McPeek is on a three-day tour of Argentina, visiting farms across the country to shop for yearlings to race in the U.S. Because the country does not host a significant yearling auction, young horses are typically sold privately off the farm. He told the TDN that he planned on visiting six farms while in Argentina, and he had inspected over 100 horses in a day.

“The U.S. dollar is extremely strong right now against the Argentine peso, so there could be some real value buys,” McPeek told the TDN. “The dollar is so strong that it is a buyer's market.”

The trainer has had success purchasing horses from the Southern Hemisphere in the past, led by Brazilian-born Einstein, who he bought as a yearling and managed to a multiple Grade 1-winning career.

McPeek said he did not have a set budget or quota of horses to buy during his trip, leaving it up to the horses in front of him to merit purchase. In addition to the purchase price, the trainer said it costs $10,000 to $15,000 to ship a horse from Argentina to the U.S.

More so than perhaps any top trainer in the sport, Ken McPeek is always thinking outside the box. And he's at it again. McPeek is in the midst of a three-day excursion to Argentina, where he is shopping for yearlings.

It's not at all uncommon for American trainers to buy yearlings overseas, but to do so in the Southern Hemisphere is largely unchartered territory. That's because Southern Hemisphere horses are born primarily in the months of August, September, October and November. For U.S. racing purposes, they turn a year older every Jan. 1, meaning they will be considered 2-year-olds when they may be no more than 13 or 14 months old. It's a huge disadvantage for a young horse, and one they may not be able to overcome until they are into their 4-year-old season.

“These are horses you have to be very patient with,” McPeek acknowledged.

This isn't the first time McPeek has shopped for young horses in South America. He bought Einstein (Brz) (Spend a Buck) as a yearling at auction in Brazil in 2003. Trained by Helen Pitts and managed by McPeek, Einstein, who made his debut in the fall of his 3-year-old year at Keeneland, went on to win five Grade I stakes and earn $2.9 million.

He came back all these years later in part because of the strength of the U.S. dollar in relation to the Argentine peso. One U.S. dollar equals 101.72 pesos.

“The U.S. dollar is extremely strong right now against the Argentine peso, so there could be some real value buys,” McPeek said. “The dollar is so strong that it is a buyer's market.”

There are no major yearling sales at this time in Argentina. Instead, McPeek has been going from farm to farm looking to buy horses privately. He says that is a common practice in Argentina. He plans on visiting six farms before returning to the U.S. Thursday.

“We are looking at all the top breeding farms down here,” he said Monday. “We haven't decided yet what we're going to buy, but today I looked at over 100 yearlings. Some of the farms we are looking at, they have horses with extremely high-quality pedigrees.”

As of Monday, he had yet to decide how many horses he was going to buy or how much he was going to spend. Much of that would depend on how many horses he saw that checked enough boxes.

“If I see a horse that is what I call a 'wow horse,' a horse that could run anywhere, then we'll ask for a price,” he said. “We'll see if where they value the horse matches where we value the horse. If the market meets you do business. If it doesn't, it doesn't. Einstein was an exceptional horse. That's what we are looking for over here, exceptional horses.”

McPeek said it will cost between $10,000 and $15,000 per horse to ship them from Argentina to the U.S. Once they arrive, the process will begin and McPeek will not be in any hurry.

“You just have to take your time with these horses,” he said. “They won't start to be prepared until next fall in U.S. When they begin racing they're going to be about six months behind the curve age-wise. They're going to have to start out running against horses that are older than them. What I have found is that a good horse can handle that and an average one can't.”

In time, the Southern Hemisphere horses will catch up.

“The added time you'll have to give them will cost you more, but you also get good value as opposed to overpaying for a horse at the 2-year-old sales,” McPeek said. “If these horses are meant to be stakes horses they'll be stakes horses. If they're meant to be claimers, they'll be claimers.”

McPeek was among the first U.S. trainers to send horses to Europe to race. He went against conventional wisdom with Swiss Skydiver (Daredevil) throughout her career, running her twice against males and winning the GI Preakness S. with her. There are numerous examples of him proving you don't need to spend seven figures to come up with a star at the yearling sales. He's not afraid to throw a 70-1 shot into a big race, which is how he won the 2002 GI Belmont S. with Sarava (Wild Again). Now he's buying Southern Hemisphere yearlings.

“I believe a good horse can be found anywhere,” he said. “Sometimes you have to go extra lengths to find them.”

The first automatic fees-paid berth to the 2022 Breeders' Cup will be handed out this Saturday in Argentina when the G1 Gran Premio Internacional Carlos Pellegrini, also known as the 'South American Arc', is run at the historic Hipodromo de San Isidro. The winner will punch their ticket to the GI Longines Breeders' Cup Turf, to be held in 2022 at Keeneland.

Contested over 2,400 meters, about 1 1/2 miles, on the massive San Isidro turf course with about a three-furlong stretch run, the Pellegrini was won last year in a thrilling three-way duel by rail-running Cool Day (Arg) (John F Kennedy {Ire}) (video), who is back to defend his title. Bred by the historic Haras Abolengo farm, the 4-year-old chestnut went to the bench for over 10 months after his 2020 Pellegrini score, ruling out a Breeders' Cup try, but returned with a dominant 3 1/2-length victory in the G1 Gran Premio Copa de Oro here Oct. 30.

The most important race in South America, the Pellegrini is named after Carlos Enrique Jose Pellegrini, the first president of the Argentinian Jockey Club and one of its founding members when it was created in 1882. The race was first run in 1887, as the International Grand Prix, over 3,000 meters (about 1 7/8 miles) with Stiletto streaking to victory in 3:27 2/5. It quickly lived up to its 'international' billing, with French raider Athos II taking the trophy in 1890 and 1892. Overall, horses bred in countries other than Argentina have won the Pellegrini 17 times, with Brazilian Nao da Mais (T H Approval) being the most recent successful invader in 2019. The race regularly attracts horses from Brazil, Chile, Peru and Uruguay.

The grand finale of the racing season in Argentina, the Pellegrini holds a US$200,000 purse and unofficially bestows the title of the best horse in South America. It's the headliner of 'International Day' at San Isidro, which also features the 2,000-meter G1 Gran Premio Copa de Plata, similar to the GI Breeders' Cup Distaff or GI Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf, the 1,600-meter G1 Gran Premio Joaquin S. de Anchorena, similar to the GI Breeders' Cup Mile and the 1,000-meter G1 Gran Premio Alzaga Unzue, similar to the GI Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint. The Anchorena has been won by names well familiar to U.S. racing fans, including the legendary Candy Ride (Arg) (Ride the Rails) and Lord At War (Arg) (General {Fr}) as well as 2014 GI Frank E. Kilroe Mile S. hero Winning Prize (Arg) (Pure Prize).

The Pellegrini is also a major social event on the Argentine calendar, with tens of thousands of people, including many Argentine celebrities, flocking to San Isidro for the race every year. The attendance record was set in 1986 when over 100,000 people showed up to see undefeated Fain (Arg) (Dancing Moss {GB}) take the trophy, and approximately 60,000 people are expected to attend this year.

Uruguayan jockey Irineo Leguisamo, considered the most decorated South American jockey of the 20th century, holds the record for most victories in the Pellegrini with 10 from 1924 through 1962; no other rider has won more than four. Juan Lapistoy and Alfredo Gaitan Dassie share the record for most Pellegrini conquests by a trainer with six apiece. Gaitan Dassie, who trains Cool Day, has a chance to take over the record by himself Saturday. Fourteen fillies and mares have defeated the boys in the Pellegrini, and there were dead heats for the win in 1915 and 1923.

Other contenders in this year's running include venerable 7-year-old Village King (Arg) (Campanologist), who ran in the U.S. in 2018 and 2019, picking up a score in the 2018 Red Smith S. and running third in the GII Pan American S. the following spring. This year, he is undefeated in three starts over the San Isidro lawn, picking up a pair of Group 1 triumphs in the 2,000-meter Gran Premio Martinez de Hoz and 2,400-meter Gran Premio 25 de Mayo (video). Mirinaque (Arg) (Hurricane Cat) also boasts U.S. graded stakes success. Though winless since taking the G1 Argentine Derby in 2019, he ran second in last year's GII Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance S. at Keeneland on the Breeders' Cup undercard and was a narrow runner-up to Village King in the Gran Premio 25 de Mayo. Overall, 19 horses are entered in the field.

The Carlos Pellegrini goes as the 13th race on a 17-race card Saturday at San Isidro with a scheduled post time of 7:35 local time (5:35 p.m. ET).

Though she hasn't raced since May, the Argentine-bred Blue Stripe will be more than ready for her U.S. debut in Saturday's Breeders' Cup Distaff at Del Mar. Trainer Marcelo Polanco told Thoroughbred Racing Commentary that the 4-year-old half-sister to 2019 Distaff winner Blue Prize has adapted well to her new surroundings.

Fernando Fantini Braun, who manages the racing stable of owner Haras Pozo de Luna, contacted third-generation trainer Polanco in the U.S. after Blue Stripe won the G1 Gran Premio Criadores at Palermo Racecourse on May 1.

<ins data-revive-zoneid=197 data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

<ins data-revive-zoneid=198 data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

“At one point, it didn't look like she was even going to get third,” Polanco told TRC, regarding the filly's run in the “Win and You're In” contest. “But she put her ears down, kept fighting, kept fighting. Jesus, that's a lot of heart.”

A four-time winner from six starts, Blue Stripe has been working steadily in Southern California since late June. Her record includes multiple two seven-furlong moves and a one-mile breeze, so she should be plenty fit for the challenge she'll face at Del Mar.

Polanco has partnered with Blue Stripe's Argentinian trainer Nicolas Martin Ferro to have her in top shape ahead of this year's edition.

“When you get to these kinds of races, you're running against champions,” added Polanco. “But, looking at the ability she showed in her races, and what she shows in the morning, she'll be very competitive.”
