Retired jockey and horse advocate Rosie Napravnik will be on site at Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots to spearhead the fourth annual “New Vocations Day at the Races” Saturday.

A four-time local riding champion who was instrumental in the opening of the New Vocations facility in Covington, Louisiana, Napravnik will join host Joe Kristufek on the live feed during the racing day to help build awareness, promote success stories, and inspire donations for Thoroughbred aftercare.

“I am thrilled to be part of our fourth annual New Vocation's Day at the Fair Grounds!” Napravnik said. “The event has been a huge help in spreading awareness to our local horseman as to how New Vocations is aiding the Louisiana racing community. We hope to continue to raise funds and awareness so that we can help more horsemen and more horses!”

Recognizing the need for expanded Thoroughbred aftercare in Louisiana, Napravnik reached out to New Vocations, the largest racehorse adoption program in the country, in the fall of 2019. Held for the first time at Fair Grounds in 2021, the “New Vocations Day at the Races” has raised over $12,500 in unique donations from fans and people within the industry, including horsemen, horse owners, and jockeys.

“Moving into our fifth year, our Louisiana facility continues to thrive, and our team has done a wonderful job with each horse that has entered the program,” New Vocations Thoroughbred Program Director Anna Ford said. “The continued support from the Louisiana HBPA has played a huge role in the facility's success. We are also seeing more and more local owners, breeders and trainers reach out to utilize our services as well as support our efforts. We are grateful to have the Fair Grounds hosting another New Vocations Day at the Races. We hope the event will continue to raise awareness about our Louisiana facility and the services we provide to the racing community.”

“I'm very proud of the New Vocations team as they have done a phenomenal job providing much needed aftercare services to a huge number of horses with diverse backgrounds that come from various tracks around the country,” said New Vocation's Thoroughbred Program Director Anna Ford. “We serve horses that are coming out of the $5,000 claiming races to horses racing at the highest stakes levels and everything in between. We are very thankful for the continued support from the racing industry, including owners, trainers, breeders and fans, which provide us the necessary resources to fulfill our mission and reach as many horses as we can.”

With facilities in Kentucky, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Florida and Louisiana, the program received horses from 70 different racetracks which were then adopted out to homes in 36 different states last year.

Churchill Downs Incorporated (CDI), represented by their nine racetrack properties, will match all New Vocations Giving Tuesday donations up to $20,000 in support of Thoroughbred and Standardbred aftercare. Giving Tuesday takes place five days after Thanksgiving on Nov. 28.

“CDI is pleased to jump start New Vocations' holiday giving campaign with a match donation. The work New Vocations does is vital to both the Thoroughbred and Standardbred industries,” said Cathy Shircliff, Director of Equine Industry Relations for CDI. “On behalf of Thoroughbred tracks Churchill Downs Racetrack, Colonial Downs, Ellis Park, Fair Grounds Race Course, Presque Isle Downs and Turfway Park and Standardbred tracks Miami Valley Gaming, Oak Grove Racing Gaming & Hotel and Ocean Downs Casino, thank you New Vocations for all that you do.”

New Vocations, which has already served 20% more horses in 2023 versus last year, relies heavily on donations to help rehab, retrain and rehome retired racehorses.

“We are very thankful for Churchill Downs Incorporated's generous match to support our Giving Tuesday campaign,” shared Anna Ford, New Vocations' Program Director. “We are happy to be able to provide our aftercare services to all of the CDI racetrack properties. The campaign will help us raise the much-needed funds to cover the increase in costs we have seen due to the influx of horses coming into the program this year.”

This year, the joy of giving is leveled up with an extra ounce of fun by featuring five unique Giving Challenges starting today. To ensure Giving Tuesday gifts are matched, and to participate in Giving Challenges, interested individuals are asked to donate by Nov. 28 at https://newvocations-givingtuesday.causevox.com/.

Due to severe storms, high winds, power outages and flight cancelations in Kentucky, Saturday's scheduled “New Vocations Day at the Races” event at Fair Grounds has been postponed and rescheduled for Thursday, Mar. 23. Despite their efforts, Mother Nature thwarted travel plans to New Orleans from Kentucky on Friday and early Saturday morning for both retired jockey and racehorse advocate Rosie Napravnik and New Vocations' executive director Anna Ford, and the decision was made to postpone the event.

“We are disappointed that we had to postpone the event, but happy that we could reschedule it,” said Fair Grounds' senior director of racing Jason Boulet. “Despite the severe weather in Kentucky, Rosie and Anna made every effort to follow through with their travel plans to New Orleans, but Mother Nature had other ideas. We are looking forward to New Vocations Day at the Races on Mar. 23. It will be a welcome addition to Louisiana Derby week.”

On Saturday, Mar. 4, retired jockey and horse advocate Rosie Napravnik will be on site at Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots to spearhead the third annual “New Vocations Day at the Races.”

A four-time local riding champion who was instrumental in the opening of the New Vocations facility in Covington, Louisiana, Napravnik will join host Joe Kristufek on the live feed during the racing day to help build awareness, promote success stories and inspire donations for Thoroughbred aftercare.

“I am elated to be having our third annual New Vocations Day at Fair Grounds,” Napravnik said. “Since its inception, our Louisiana satellite facility has been a great success and it's my honor to dedicate a day to promoting local aftercare by showing off the horses and the work that these ladies have done right here in Covington. This year I am excited to have New Vocations executive director Anna Ford also joining Joe and me on set to talk about the program!”

Held for the first time at Fair Grounds in 2021, the “New Vocations Day at the Races” has raised over $10,000 in unique donations from fans and people within the industry, including horsemen, horse owners and jockeys.

For the first time this year, owners, jockeys and trainers can contribute a financial donation to the Louisiana chapter of New Vocations directly through the horsemen's bookkeeper. Contact Emily Miller or Diana Bosco at 504-948-1254. In addition, contributions are welcome through the New Vocations website–visit https://horseadoption.org/donate and click the button with Rosie's picture on it in the top row to complete the process.

New Vocations Racehorse Adoption Program raised over $72,000 for racehorse aftercare on 'Giving Tuesday'. Breeders' Cup winning owners of Wonder Wheel, DJ Stable, LLC, generously pledged to match the first $30,000 raised by New Vocations in honor of the organization's 30th anniversary.

Courtesy of over 100 supporters in the equestrian and racing communities, funds were raised late into Nov. 29, and pushed over the goal thanks to a $10,000 donation made by Oak Grove Racing Gaming and Hotel, a Churchill Downs property.

“We were blown away by the tremendous response to this year's Giving Tuesday Campaign,” said Anna Ford, New Vocations Thoroughbred Program Director. “Due to rising costs in horse care, our funds have been stretched thin this year. Surpassing our fundraising goal will help us serve the hundreds of retired racehorses that go through our program.”

“This year's Pledge is extra special as New Vocations is celebrating its 30-year anniversary and the Breeders' Cup is being hosted minutes away from our main facility in Lexington,” said Anna Ford, New Vocations Thoroughbred Program Director. “We are so thankful for the owners and trainers who have supported this important fundraiser and have made it so successful. We are hopeful the pledge will continue to grow as it has in the past and welcome even more participants to help us raise the much-needed funds to support our aftercare efforts.”

Last year's pledge raised $150,000, in which over 60 Championship contenders had owners and/or trainers who pledged a percentage of their Breeders' Cup earnings.

LEXINGTON, KY–With a rainy, cloudy afternoon turning into a perfect sunny and 72-degree evening, the racing industry was out in full force to support retired Thoroughbreds in the Real Rider Cup. Typically held in the fall at Fair Hill, it was the first time the event was being held in Lexington at New Vocations' Mereworth Farm and the rail was packed with familiar faces, such as Christian Black, Mike McMahon and Aidan and Leah O'Meara, to support this great cause initiated by Anita Motion.

Thirty-one riders completed a 2'6″ jumper course Saturday evening, all sporting the racing silks of a sponsor stable and all riding off-track Thoroughbreds. Some of the human standouts were jockeys Rosie Napravnik and Aaron Gryder and the equine celebrities included Cozmic One (Bernardini), first foal out of Zenyatta, and GSW Stickstatelydude (First Dude).

The riders were split into nine teams and, in addition to their stable sponsorships, were tasked with garnering monetary donations, all of which went to aftercare organizations, such as New Vocations and the Retired Racehorse Project.

After 31 exciting rounds in the ring with Terence Collier on the mic, New Vocations' Anna Ford announced that over $89,000 had been raised so far and they were still counting.

In the individual results, first place went to Jesslyn Woodall, who rode Lead Player (Posse), while sporting the WinStar silks. Second went to Keira Nygaard, wearing the Thord-Bred silks aboard Judge Johnny (Empire Maker) and third was awarded to Tara Coombs, donning the silks of September Farm on the unraced Baptizo (Magical Eight).

The top team of the evening was team Blood-Horse, comprised of Woodall, trainer John Ennis on Sound Prospect (Eastern Echo) and Lauren Gash aboard Collaborator (Any Given Saturday). Second went to the Breeding and Bloodstock team, comprised of Sergio de Sousa and Cozmic One, Jocelyn Brooks on Perpetual Optimism (First Defence) and Nygaard. The third-place team was Off-Track Sporthorse, led by Napravnik on Banana Thief (Kitten's Joy), Emily Crow and Emily Swirsky, who both rode Old Ironsides (Rubiano), Anne Czerwonka on Subtle Hope (Dialed In) and Kelsey Buckberry on Docktarri (Preachinatthebar).

The Real Rider Cup returns to its traditional home at Fair Hill Sept. 16.

New Vocations Racehorse Adoption Program announced that it has received a $75,000 donation from the Ohio Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association. The donation will help support aftercare efforts at the New Vocations facility in Medina, Ohio, which focuses on rehabbing, retraining and rehoming Thoroughbred racehorses retiring from racetracks in the state.

“Making sure our horses have a good home after retiring from racing is vital to the Ohio HBPA,” said Ohio HBPA Executive Director Dave Basler. “Continuing to support New Vocations is an easy decision given their 30-year track record of successfully retraining and rehoming our Ohio horses. ”

Added New Vocations' Thoroughbred Program Director Anna Ford: “We are so thankful for the continued generosity and support from the Ohio HBPA. Even in the face of rising boarding and horse care costs and a pandemic, which resulted in challenging times for everyone, the Ohio HBPA's support has helped us offer uninterrupted aftercare services to horses coming off the track and ready to find their next career.”

New Vocations was founded in 1992 in Laura, Ohio.

“We'll always have a special place in our hearts for the Ohio horsemen who helped us get our start,” Ford said. “We're honored that they still entrust us with their horses' transition to new lives and new careers.”

New Vocations Racehorse Adoption Program has announced that it has opened a satellite facility near Ocala, Fla., as it continues to expand its aftercare efforts. The new facility will focus on rehabbing, retraining and rehoming retiring Thoroughbred racehorses.

The nation's oldest and largest racehorse adoption charity now has nine facilities in six states.

<ins data-revive-zoneid=269 data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

<ins data-revive-zoneid=270 data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

The newest facility is based at Trillium Sport Horses in Anthony, just a few miles from Ocala. Erin MacDonald, an international three-day eventing rider with years of experience restarting off-track Thoroughbreds in new careers, will oversee the horses' rehabilitation and training.

New Vocations' Thoroughbred Program Director Anna Ford said there's been a need for a Florida facility for several years.

“On average, 60 horses each year are shipped more than 700 miles from Florida to our Lexington facility,” Ford said. “Horses coming from Florida racetracks and training centers will now have a much shorter travel distance and duration as they start their next chapters.”

MacDonald said, “It is so gratifying to help a Thoroughbred smoothly transition into a second career after the races. I am honored to be working with such an outstanding aftercare organization and to join in their efforts to provide Florida-based horses and their connections with a quality rehabilitation and retraining program.”

Ford said an Ocala-area facility has been part of New Vocations' strategic plan for the past couple years, but it has been delayed by the pandemic.

“As the need for our aftercare services continues to grow we will do our best to expand and accommodate more horses,” she said.

The first horses arrived at the Florida facility in late 2021. Thus far, three have been adopted into experience, loving homes. Several more horses are making progress in various stages of rehab and training and will be available for adoption soon.
