When Domestic Product (Practical Joke) bullied his way through traffic to get his nose in front in the GIII Lambholm South Tampa Bay Derby Saturday, he not only earned valuable qualifying points to the GI Kentucky Derby, he also provided a timely update for his half-sister who is scheduled to sell during the first session of the Ocala Breeders' Sales' Company's March 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale Tuesday.

“She's been very popular today, let's put it that way,” Becky Thomas said of the filly from the first crop of Complexity (hip 276) after a long day of showing Sunday in Ocala.

Thomas's Sequel Thoroughbreds bred the daughter of Goods and Services (Paynter) and she is consigned under the Sequel Bloodstock banner.

The tote delay that caused the Tampa Bay Derby post time to be pushed back a half-hour did, at least, allow Thomas to get home in time to watch the race.

“I was afraid he was not going to be able to move around because he was in tight there at the end,” Thomas said. “Those kind of horses are so impressive because he obviously had so much horse left, he just needed to be able to go. So it was very, very cool.”

Even before Domestic Product's win at Tampa Bay, Thomas was impressed with his 2-year-old half-sister, who worked a furlong during the OBS under-tack show in :10 flat and had shown even more promise when training over the dirt.

“I really love her on dirt,” Thomas said. “She was a filly that I slated for Maryland May [Fasig-Tipton Midlantic sale] and I moved her up here because she was training so good. She's got a really quiet demeanor, so I originally put her for May because she is a big, stretchy filly and I thought I would give her a little bit more time. They kind of tell you when you start breezing them who needs to move up and who might need to move down. But she's been really solid.”

The dark bay filly is one of 19 juveniles by Complexity to work last week ahead of the OBS March sale. The son of Hill 'n' Dale stallion Maclean's Music won the 2018 GI Champagne S. and 2020 GII Kelso S. He stands at Airdrie Stud for a fee of $12,500.

“I am a Maclean's Music fan,” Thomas explained. “I ended up buying a share in [his sons] Drain the Clock and I bred to Jackie's Warrior. I am a John Sikura disciple. When you have those horses who have shown such brilliance and have been a Grade I-siring stallion like him, I really like those kind of horses. And this filly is a big tall leggy, two-turn looking filly that's got a lot of parts. You can see why she can go so fast and you can also see why she should go two turns.”

The large number of juveniles by Complexity in the March catalogue came as no surprise to Thomas.

“We are a land of pinhookers and if we actually bought horses, it's because all of us like the shape of them,” she said. “The fact that there are that many in here and so many of them are pinhooks, they are the type the pinhookers like. They look quick.”

Thomas purchased Goods and Services with the Complexity filly in utero for $37,000 at the 2021 Keeneland November sale.

“I couldn't be at that sale, but [bloodstock agent] Andrew Cary and my assistant Carlos Manresa sent me the link to her,” Thomas said. “So we decided to try on her. But it was all because of Andrew and Carlos.”

The 2-year-old is the mare's last foal.

“Unfortunately, she has passed away,” Thomas said of the mare. “We bred her to Drain the Clock and she was in foal, but she was really very laminitic. Unfortunately, even through our podiatrist, we were not able to keep her comfortable. This is the only baby we got out of her.”

The three-day OBS March sale begins Tuesday at 11 a.m.

As we approach the opening of the 2023 breeding sheds, the TDN staff is once again sitting down with leading breeders to find out what stallions they have chosen for their mares, and why. Andrew Cary of Cary Bloodstock, advisor to Coteau Grove Farms, took time to discuss which sires they have chosen for some of their top mares.

ARTISTIC DIVA (m, 8, Munnings-Diva N Disguise, by Mizzen Mast), booked to Not This Time
Artistic Diva was brilliantly fast, winning the Anoakia S. at Santa Anita as a 2-year-old. She was also second in the GIII Miss Preakness S. as a 3-year-old. Her first foal is a rocket-bodied filly by Justify that we will offer later this year and she's currently in-foal to Constitution. Not This Time's brilliant success from his early crops has been remarkable and he looks poised to be one of the leading sires for the next decade. He has already sired Grade I winner Just One Time from a Speightstown-line mare, so the cross made a lot of sense physically and on paper.

BAYERNESS (m, 6, Bayern-Weight No More, by Pure Prize), booked to to Flightline
Bayerness is a drop dead gorgeous young mare. We acquired her as a broodmare prospect at last year's Keeneland November sale. She was a SW and MGSP on the track and earned over $430,000. We are very excited to be part of the tremendous first book of mares heading to the superstar new sire Flightline, undoubtedly one of the most talented racehorses we have ever seen.

CALL TO SERVICE (m, 7, To Honor and Serve – Game for More, by More Than Ready), booked to Justify
Call to Service is a young half-sister to GSW Isotherm (Lonhro), GISP Gio Game (Gio Ponti) and GISP Giant Game (Giant's Causeway). We purchased her in-foal to HOY Authentic in January of last year and she had a beast of a colt that we will offer for sale later this year. We are hearing good things about her first foal, a 2-year-old by Vino Rosso, and she is currently in-foal to Curlin so this mare is definitely getting every chance. Justify is off to an excellent start at stud with MSW already, and they should only get better with time. Justify has already sired SW Justique and Justa Warrior from Bernardini mares and GIII winner Champions Dream from a Tapit mare, so he made sense for this mare being from the A.P. Indy-Bernardini line.

CILLA (m, 5, California Chrome – Sittin At the Bar, by Into Mischief), booked to Jackie's Warrior
We acquired Cilla at the Fasig-Tipton November sale last year. She won the Grade II Prioress S. at Saratoga among her stakes wins and placed in the GI Frizette S. at Belmont as a 2-year-old. She earned over $509,000 and was tough and genuine as a racehorse. I know her family well, having followed her dam Sittin At the Bar's career closely from the time she was a yearling (we also own Sittin at the Bar's half-sister, Lead Us to the Bar). Sittin at the Bar has produced three SW already in her career and looks sure to add more in the coming years. Jackie's Warrior was as brilliant, tough, and consistent as they come on the racetrack and we love him as a sire prospect. His performance in the GII Pat Day Mile, when he set blazing fractions, fought off multiple challengers and still found a way to win, is a race I'll never forget.

ELFIN QUEEN (m, 6, American Pharoah – Pretty 'n' Smart, by Beau Genius), booked to Life is Good
Elfin Queen is one of our most exciting long-term prospects as a potential foundation mare. She was a $1.2 million yearling and is a half-sister to GISW Cupid (Tapit), as well as GSW Heart Ashley (Lion Heart), GSW Ashley's Kitty (Tale of the Cat) and SW Indianapolis (Medaglia d'Oro). This is also the immediate family of recent GSW fillies Kathleen O. (Upstart) and Ain't Easy (Into Mischief). The first dam literally fills the page. Elfin Queen's first foal is an outstanding Justify filly and she's currently in-foal to leading sire Into Mischief. We felt that Life is Good was one of the most gifted horses of the past 10 or 15 years and he has the phenomenal looks to match his pedigree and racetrack performance. He has all the ingredients to make a future leading sire.

GOLD SOUK (6, m, Medaglia d'Oro – Glittering Tax by Artax), booked to Charlatan
Gold Souk is a half-sister to GISW Miss Temple City (Temple City), GSW Pricedtoperfection (Temple City) and SW Miss Mosaic (Verrazano). Her first foal is a Speightstown colt that will be selling as a 2-year-old later this spring and looks fast as lightning. She is in-foal to Munnings and we tripled down on the ultra-successful Speightstown-Medaglia cross by going to the popular young sire Charlatan this year. I thought on pure talent that Charlatan was up there with the likes of Life is Good and even Flightline. His first four starts were breathtaking and it took an outstanding horse to beat him in the G1 Saudi Cup in Mishriff. Speightstown has been a wonderful sire of sires and Charlatan had probably the most talent and ability of all of his sons. His first in-foal mares averaged over $344,000.

HOT AUTUMN (8, m, Tiz Wonderful – Shesoprovocative, by Orientate), booked to Constitution
Hot Autumn is another mare who had a high cruising speed-second in the GI La Brea S. at Santa Anita. She has a yearling filly by Authentic who is a monster and could be any kind. She is currently in-foal to Essential Quality. I liked Constitution for her this year as a proven, top-level sire who has had excellent results with Tiznow line mares, producing the likes of GISW Tiz the Law, GSW We the People and SW Never Surprised.

Golden Pal | Sara Gordon

LITTLE MS PROTOCOL (m, 14, El Corredor – Character Builder, by Coronado's Quest), booked to Golden Pal
Little Ms Protocol was the first horse ever bred by Coteau Grove, and remarkably, she developed into a top performer on the racetrack as a MSW of over $730,000. She has already produced two winners including The Great One (Nyquist), who was second beaten by a nose in the GII Los Alamitos Futurity and was on the Derby Trail in 2021. Little Ms Protocol foaled a full brother to The Great One in 2022 and we thought it made sense to return to the Uncle Mo sire line with the lightning-fast multiple Breeders' Cup winning Golden Pal this year.

LITTLE MISS ZAPP (m, 7, Ghostzapper – Little Ms Protocol, by El Corredor), booked to Corniche
Little Miss Zapp is the first foal out of Little Ms Protocol. She was unraced but we are excited about her broodmare potential with her pedigree and looks. Her first foal, a McKinzie colt, is a crackerjack and she is currently in-foal to the red-hot Good Magic. I'm intrigued by the potential of Corniche as he was a brilliant 2-year-old and has incredible strength and athleticism. His breeze at OBS when he topped the sale was sensational and I loved his dam Wasted Tears when she was racing. The Quality Road-Ghostzapper cross is a proven one as well.

MIDNIGHT FANTASY (7, m, Midnight Lute – St. Jean, by Macho Uno), booked to Uncle Mo
Midnight Fantasy is one of our newest purchases, we bought her at Keeneland November last year in-foal to Quality Road. Similar to Bayerness and Cilla, I followed her racing career very closely from the time she was a yearling and she always showed tremendous talent from the beginning. She was a MSW on the track and earned over $340,000, displaying terrific speed and ability. Uncle Mo is coming off another excellent season and has consistently shown he can get Grade I Saturday afternoon horses, year-in and year-out.

MISS HOT LEGS (7, m, Verrazano – Expo Gold, by Johannesburg), booked to Flightline
Miss Hot Legs is a SP half-sister to the champion 3-year-old filly Swiss Skydiver. She is an incredible physical and was very talented in her own right with tons of speed. Her first foal is a very athletic yearling colt by Curlin that we have very high hopes for both as a sales prospect later this year and then for his racing career. Miss Hot Legs is also booked to Flightline this year, we're hoping that foal can break the sound barrier!

MYLADY CURLIN (8, m, Curlin – Ladyledue, by Slewdledo), booked to Life is Good
We purchased Mylady Curlin at Fasig-Tipton November last year in-foal to the exciting first season sire Charlatan. Mylady Curlin was an excellent racemare, as MGSW and earner over $800,000. Her biggest score came in the GII Falls City H. at Churchill Downs for trainer Brad Cox. We have been trying to steadily upgrade our broodmare band the past few years and adding these types of mares really moves our program to a different level. She is another mare we have going to the brilliant Life is Good, whose elite speed is a great match for Mylady Curlin's stamina. Recent SW Dazzling Blue (Into Mischief) is also a successful product of the Into Mischief-Curlin cross.

PLUS ONE (14, m, Bluegrass Cat – License Free, by Miswaki), booked to Olympiad
Plus One is the dam of the brilliantly fast GISW No Parole (Violence), the first for that farm, and now a stallion we are standing in partnership with in Louisiana. We took at shot breeding to Gun Runner last year and thankfully it looks like that choice has turned out well! For 2023 we are going with Olympiad. He is a stunning horse physically ($700k yearling), big and stretchy and full of quality. He is much more reminiscent of his broodmare sire Medaglia d'Oro than Speightstown. Seeing as Violence is by Medaglia d'Oro, I thought that bringing that blood back to Plus One for this mating made a lot of sense and it's a great physical match as well.

TOUCH MAGIC (13, m, by Lion Heart – Unifier, by Deputy Minister), booked to Maxfield
Touch Magic had a big year in 2022, as her 3-year-old son Touchuponastar (Star Guitar) won four of sixth starts including the Louisiana Champions Day Classic at Fair Grounds by nearly five lengths. He is one of the most exciting Louisiana-breds currently in training. Touch Magic is booked back to Maxfield, who we think has a great shot at developing into a classic stallion in the mold of his sire Street Sense. This mating also creates 4×4 linebreeding to the influential mare La Affirmed, ancestress of such luminaries as Bernstein, Sky Mesa, Caress, Country Cat, Della Francesca, Good Samaritan, Wiseman's Ferry, Matareya and Maxfield himself. Maxfield also carries Quiet American blood through his broodmare sire Bernardini, an added bonus as Star Guitar, sire of Touchuponastar, is also by Quiet American.

WILLFUL WOMAN (5, m, by Nyquist – Foxt Dansuer, by Mr. Greeley), booked to Life is Good
We acquired Willful Woman at Fasig-Tipton November last year, in-foal to Medaglia d'Oro. She is just an incredibly good-looking mare–big, fancy and powerful. She was a $400,000 Saratoga yearling purchase by Bo Hunt for the Lieblongs and certainly looked the part. She translated those good looks into top level performance as well, winning three of 10 starts and running a strong second to Army Wife in the GII Black-Eyed Susan S. Life is Good was another easy choice for this mare with his potential and pedigree-wise it makes a lot of sense too–Into Mischief has already sired GISW Dayoutoftheoffice and GSW Frank's Rockette out of Indian Charlie line mares.

YOU LAUGHIN (15, m, by Sharp Humor – Livermore Leslie, by Mt Livermore), booked to Mandaloun
You Laughin is the dam of GISW Zenden (Fed Biz) and she is a half-sister to GISW Sweet Reason (Street Sense), GSW Don't Forget Gil (Kafwain) and SW Battle Girl (Midshipman). We purchased her for $55k a couple years before he won his Grade I, so we got fortunate there that he fulfilled his potential. We sold her Audible yearling for $175,000 last Sept. and he will go to Steve Asmussen. I really like the Into Mischief-Distorted Humor cross that has been so effective with Life is Good and Practical Joke among others, so it was logical to go with the first-year sire Mandaloun. He is a big, beautiful stretchy horse for an Into Mischief and has one of those mesmerizing walks to him. I thought he was great value for his pedigree, looks and race record and I know he has proven popular at Juddmonte.

GI Woody Stephens S. winner No Parole (Violence–Plus One, by Bluegrass Cat) was represented by his first foal, produced at Coteau Grove Farms Jan. 9. The colt is out of the Street Sense mare Naive Enough, making him a half-brother to stakes-placed sophomore Tumbarumba (Oscar Peformance), who recently ran second in the Louisiana Champions Day Juvenile S. Dec. 10. The 6-year-old stallion stands in partnership at Carrol Castille's Whispering Oaks Farm in Carencro, Louisiana for $3,500, live foal stands and nurses.

“We are so excited obviously as the breeders of No Parole himself, to also be the breeders of his first foal. He is a beautiful foal and full of energy this morning,” said Coteau Grove Farms managing partner Hunter Myers.

Coteau Grove Farms Bloodstock advisor Andrew Cary said, “We have supported No Parole with some very nice mares and will continue to do so this year and beyond. No Parole had truly elite speed and his sire Violence continues to produce top level horses every year, like Grade I winners Volatile and Forte among many others. He's the only son of Violence standing in Louisiana.”

Raced by Maggi Moss and Greg Tramontin and trained by Tom Amoss, No Parole won six wins in 13 career starts.

The first mares have been confirmed in-foal to Grade I winner No Parole (Violence), Whispering Oaks Farm and Coteau Grove Farms announced Wednesday.

Among the early mares scanned in-foal include Coteau Grove's Naive Enough (Street Sense), a full-sister to stakes- winner/Grade I-placed Light the City, who in turn is the dam of Grade I-placed Illumination, who sold for $875,000 as a broodmare prospect last year at Fasig-Tipton November.

“A mare of the quality of Naive Enough is indicative of the kind of mare we are breeding to No Parole to support him,” said Coteau Grove's bloodstock advisor Andrew Cary. “She was a close fourth in the GII Golden Rod S. as a 2-year-old and is big, good-looking mare with a huge pedigree. She has already produced two winners and her 2-year-old is training very well in Florida right now. We have several stakes winners and stakes producers booked to No Parole and will continue to support him. Whispering Oaks is a tremendous partner in the horse and is also supporting him strongly. He has also been very well received by breeders throughout Louisiana.”

No Parole, winner of the 2020 GI Woody Stephens S., captured six of 13 starts and earned $369,866. He is standing his first season at an advertised fee of $3,500, stands and nurses.

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

“The resemblance of this filly to her sire is uncanny, right down to her four white socks,” said Andrew Cary, Coteau Grove Farms' bloodstock advisor. “There is no doubt about who her sire is. Honor A. P. was right up there with the best of his generation and we likely only saw a fraction of what he was capable of. We have two more mares due to foal to Honor A. P., including a mare who produced a $400,000 Saratoga yearling for us, so we are very excited about the sire and his future.”

Honor A. P., broke his maiden as a 2-year-old at Santa Anita by over five lengths posting a 91 Beyer, one of the highest of his generation. The impressive stallion went on to win the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby with a 102 Beyer Speed Figure.

“This filly is really nice, she has good size and a great shape to her with a beautiful head,” said Coteau Grove Farms' broodmare manager Jacob Cyprian. “We're very excited about her.”

Honor A. P. is out multiple grade one winner and multiple graded stakes producer Hollywood Story. He is the highest priced offspring of his sire, having sold for $850,000 at the 2018 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Sale.

Honor A. P. stands for $15,000.

With the 2022 breeding season right around the corner, we will feature a series of breeders' mating plans over the coming weeks. Today we have Andrew Cary, bloodstock agent for Coteau Grove Farms.

MISS HOT LEGS (m, 6, Verrazano–Expo Gold, by Johannesburg), to be bred to Medaglia d'Oro

Miss Hot Legs is one of our top mares. She's a stakes-placed three-quarter sister to the superstar Swiss Skydiver (Daredevil). We purchased her for $500,000 as a broodmare prospect at Keeneland November 2020.

Miss Hot Legs herself was a very fast and talented racemare in her own right and is a stunning physical. She was stakes-placed at Santa Anita and was only beaten a few lengths in a Grade II against the likes of Jolie Olimpica (Brz) and Oleksandra (Aus).

She is currently in foal to Curlin for her first foal and we felt that Medaglia d'Oro offered great value at $100,000 given what he has achieved during his legendary career. We are giving Miss Hot Legs every shot to get her broodmare career off to a good start with those first two covering sires.

ELFIN QUEEN (m, 5, American Pharoah–Pretty 'n Smart, by Beau Genius), to be bred to Into Mischief

Elfin Queen was acquired at the Keeneland November sale last year for $550,000, in foal to Justify. It's special to be able to buy a well-bred daughter of a Triple Crown winner, in foal to a Triple Crown winner. She was a $1.2-million yearling herself and is a half-sister to Grade I winner and promising young sire Cupid (Tapit). She broke her maiden by 6 1/2 lengths in Ireland for Aidan O'Brien and competed in stakes after that. We are giving her every shot by breeding her to Into Mischief. With her exceptional looks and pedigree, we have high hopes for Elfin Queen as a foundation mare for Coteau Grove for the next decade.

GOTTAHAVEAHOLIDAY (m, 8, Harlan's Holiday–Gottahaveadream, by Indian Charlie), to be bred to Constitution

Gottahaveaholiday is a three-quarter sister to Grade I winner Dayoutoftheoffice (Into Mischief), who recently sold for $2.85 million to Shadai Farm at Fasig-Tipton November. She herself was an expensive yearling and placed in maiden special weight company several times in New York. We acquired her for $240,000 as a broodmare prospect at Keeneland November 2020. She is a big, great-looking mare and is due any day for her first foal to Quality Road. We are huge fans of Constitution and feel that he is poised to become a perennial top-five sire in the years to come with what he has coming in the pipeline.

PLUS ONE (m, 13, Bluegrass Cat–License Free, by Miswaki), to be bred to Gun Runner

Plus One will always be a special mare to us, as she became our first Grade I producer when her son No Parole (Violence) won the GI Woody Stephens S. at Belmont Park in June of 2020. We acquired her for $67,000 at Keeneland November in 2014. Plus One is currently in foal to Tapit and we are obviously very excited to have her booked to the phenomenal Gun Runner. Gun Runner has already sired Echo Zulu (GI), Gunite (GI) and Pappacap (GII) from Storm Cat-line mares.

CONTRIBUTING (m, 8, Medaglia d'Oro–Taegu, by Halo), to be bred to Curlin

We acquired Contributing for $500,000 at Keeneland November 2020, in foal to Speightstown. She's a gorgeous mare who had a lot of speed, and her pedigree is phenomenal–the first dam fills the whole page. Her sister Classic Elegance (Carson City) was a Grade II winner and multiple stakes producer; she also has three other half-sisters that are stakes producers, including El Fasto (El Prado {Ire}), the dam of GI Kentucky Oaks winner Believe You Can (Proud Citizen).

Contributing has a yearling Speightstown colt we are very excited about and look forward to bringing him to the yearling sales this fall. She is currently in foal to Justify, who we expect to have great success with his early crops both here and around the world. We love the physical match with Curlin and it gives her another great chance at throwing a runner.

Let us know who you're breeding your mares to in 2022, and why. We will print a selection of your responses in TDN over the coming weeks. Please send details to: garyking@thetdn.com.

Coteau Grove Farms and Whispering Oaks Farm announced today the purchase of Coteau Grove's Grade 1-winning homebred No Parole (Violence). No Parole will stand at Whispering Oaks Farm in Carencro, La., for $3,500 live foal, stands and nurses. Coteau Grove's bloodstock advisor Andrew Cary (Cary Bloodstock) brokered the deal.

“No Parole was our first Grade 1 winner as a breeder and that is so exciting for us.” said Ginger Myers.

“We've been interested in where he would go next when his racing career was completed. To be to able bring him back to Louisiana and stand him close to home at Whispering Oaks is a dream come true for us,” said Keith Myers. “We look forward to supporting him with quality mares from our farm.”

Whispering Oaks Farm also stands the highly promising young sire Iron Fist (Tapit), who currently sits second on the freshman sire list in Louisiana, as well as the graded stakes-winning One Liner (Into Mischief).

“We are very excited to be standing Louisiana-bred Grade 1 winner No Parole at Whispering Oaks,” said Whispering Oaks owner Carrol Castille. “We are big supporters of the Louisiana breeding industry and it's great to be able to keep a homegrown Grade 1 winner like this here to stand at stud. He showed tremendous talent and fits in perfectly with the other stallions on our roster. We look forward to supporting him with our own mares and think he'll be very popular with Louisiana breeders as well.”

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

No Parole was purchased for $75,000 as a yearling by Maggi Moss from the consignment of Select Sales as agent for Coteau Grove Farms at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale. Greg Tramontin purchased an interest in the horse early during his racing career.

“I've said it before – he was the horse of a lifetime,” said Moss. “We had many generous offers on this horse, but it was my preference to see him go back to his breeders. I know they will take care of him, give him every opportunity at stud, and give him a great life.”

Trained by Tom Amoss, No Parole began his career in devastating fashion, winning his first three starts by a combined 34 lengths, including the Premier Night Prince Stakes at a mile. After an impressive allowance victory over open company at Oaklawn Park, No Parole's finest hour arrived when he dominated a strong field in the Grade 1 Woody Stephens Stakes at Belmont Park, winning wire-to-wire by 3 3/4 lengths in 1:21.41 for the seven furlongs, defeating Grade 1 winners Echo Town and Mischevious Alex.

“No Parole was one of the most brilliant racehorses I've ever trained,” said Amoss. “I am very excited for him to go to stud and I will be supporting him as a stallion.”

No Parole kicked off 2021 with a facile victory in the Premier Sprint Stakes, running the fastest five furlongs of the meet at Delta Downs.

“No Parole was incredibly fast, and did it effortlessly,” said Cary. “That kind of speed is rare in a stallion prospect. His career debut at Fair Grounds, which he won by 14 1/4 lengths, was simply breathtaking. I encourage breeders to watch his first three races as well as his Grade 1 win in the Woody Stephens win, where he went 1:08 3/5 for six furlongs. This horse had immense natural ability, and has the potent combination of athleticism, pedigree and performance that should make him highly appealing to Louisiana breeders, especially with what we feel is a reasonable fee for a first-year horse with his credentials and name recognition.”

The 2020 Louisiana Horse of the Year, No Parole retires with six wins in 13 starts and earnings of $369,866.

He was produced by the stakes-winning mare Plus One (Bluegrass Cat), a mare acquired by Cary for Coteau Grove at the 2014 Keeneland November Sale for $67,000 (in-foal to Violence). She has also produced the multiple winner Violent Ways (Violent), who earned over $195,000. She is currently in-foal to leading sire Tapit and is booked to the current leading first crop and juvenile sire sensation Gun Runner for 2022.

GSP Aurelius Maximus (Pioneerof the Nile–La Reina, by A.P. Indy) has been retired from racing and will enter stud in 2021 at Jay Adcock's Red River Farm in Coushatta, Louisiana. The deal was brokered by Andrew Cary of Cary Bloodstock. The 5-year-old, who will stand in a partnership between Nathan Granger and Stonestreet Stables/George Bolton/Peter Leidel, will stand for $2,000 live foal, with consideration to approved mares.

“Aurelius Maximus is the most exciting horse to retire to Louisiana for many years,” said Cary. “His combination of impeccable pedigree, gorgeous conformation and top-class ability on the racetrack make him a very tantalizing prospect for breeders in the southwest.”

Granger added, “We're very excited to get a horse of such talent and grit–not to mention his great looks. We're just as excited to partner with one of the premier ownership groups in the industry in Stonestreet Stables, Mr. Bolton and Mr. Leidel.”

Aurelius Maximus broke his maiden at Belmont Park by 7 3/4 lengths second time out before finishing fourth in the 2018 GI Champagne S. Sidelined afterwards, he kicked off 2020 with two professional allowance victories at Fair Grounds and Churchill Downs before finishing a neck to Mr Freeze (To Honor and Serve) in the GII Hagyard Fayette S. at Keeneland last October.

Aurelius Maximus was conditioned for his final four races by Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen.

“Aurelius Maximus was an amazing physical,” he said. “He was super athletic and had tremendous heart. If his foals look like him, he'll make an outstanding sire.”

Stonestreet Stables bloodstock advisor John Moynihan, who purchased Aurelius Maximus privately as a 2-year-old, added, “Aurelius Maximus is among the most talented horses we've ever had at Stonestreet. He had legitimate Grade I ability, a ton of natural speed, and has an awesome physical to go with it.”

Aurelius Maximus is one of seven winners produced by the Grade III-winning La Reina, who also produced Grade II winner Chief Havoc (Giant's Causeway) and Grade III-placed Special Event (Arch). La Reina is a half-sister to Grade I winner and sire Brahms (Danzig) and to SW Olympic (Danzig). This represents the female family of Grade I winners Queena, Too Chic, Chic Shirine, Somali Lemonade, Verrazano, etc.

As we approach the end of the calendar, we turn our attention to the incoming sire class of 2021. We asked several judges who their favorite incoming sire is for next year and if there are any other stallions, new or otherwise, that have caught their eye as under-the-radar picks.

ANDREW CARY, Cary Bloodstock

McKinzie (Street Sense), $30,000, Gainesway

This is a very strong group of incoming freshman sires and it’s very hard to just pick one, but I am a huge fan of McKinzie. I think had he retired in a “normal” year, he would have stood for more.

When he was at the top of his game in the summer of 2019, he was the best horse in the country. He was incredibly unlucky not to win the GI Met Mile (where he only got to run for about a sixteenth of a mile) and he galloped to a very easy win in the GI Whitney S. against a strong field and in fast time.

Any horse who can compete at the highest level from ages two through five and run first or second in 14 graded stakes has to be immensely respected.

In addition, he’s got the strong physical and pedigree that the market requires. Street Sense is a tremendous sire who still has plenty of years of production left, and his dam Runway Model (Petionville) was an elite runner herself. Bob Baffert was always very high on this horse from the moment he entered his shedrow. I think Gainesway did a great job pricing him where they did and my clients are breeding five mares to him.

Instagrand (Into Mischief), $7,500, Taylor Made

I think Instagrand is the potential home run horse of this whole crop, especially at his stud fee. He is a tremendous physical by the hottest sire on the planet, was a $1.2 million 2-year-old and flashed top level ability from the get go. He did train on as a 3-year-old to place in the GI Santa Anita Derby against the previous year’s champion 2-year-old Game Winner (Candy Ride {Arg}) and Roadster (Quality Road).

Unfortunately he never got to truly fulfill all of his potential on the racetrack, but his profile matches up with many top stallions who began their careers standing for under $15,000 (including his own sire Into Mischief, as well as Distorted Humor, Mr. Prospector, Danzig, War Front, etc).

I encourage people to go back and watch Instagrand’s first two races–his maiden win and the GII Best Pal S., both of which he won by over 10 lengths. They are jaw-dropping. Mr. Larry Best (leading buyer at Keeneland November Sale) has made a huge commitment to the horse and my clients will be supporting him strongly as well.

Thank you to the breeders and agents who have participated in our ongoing ‘Who’s Your Pick’ series this week. Did you miss a few responses? You can catch up on the entire series here.

Momentum continued into Wednesday's third session of the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale, generating the top prices of $500,000 paid by Coteau Grove Farms/Cary Bloodstock, agent, for the broodmare Contributing, in foal to Speightstown, and $435,000 from Baccari Bloodstock for a weanling colt from the first crop of undefeated 2018 Triple Crown winner Justify.

During a day of brisk trade, Keeneland sold 196 horses for $25,063,000, for an average of $127,872 and a median of $107,500.

Cumulative results for the November Sale's first three sessions reached $102,528,000 for 521 horses, for an average of $196,791 and a median of $125,000.

“Overall, the energy today was really good,” Keeneland President-Elect and Interim Head of Sales Shannon Arvin said. “We saw a lot of competition for foals. Some new buyers and many of the same buyers from the first two days continue to participate. We would love to see stability of the market throughout the sale, similar to what we experienced during the September Yearling Sale.”

Keeneland Director of Sales Operations Geoffrey Russell agreed.

“It will be a different level of the market moving forward,” he said, “but if we can capture the vibrancy of today and extend it into tomorrow and the next day that would be great.”

Hill 'n' Dale Sales Agency, agent, consigned Contributing, a 6-year-old stakes-winning daughter of Medaglia d'Oro from the family of Kentucky Oaks winner Believe You Can.

“I bought one Medaglia d'Oro mare in foal to Speightstown earlier, so I figured why not hit a double?” buyer Andrew Cary said. “It's an awesome pedigree and Speightstown is showing again how awesome he is, with a horse like (undefeated track record-setting stakes winner) Nashville. (Contributing's) sister produced an Oaks winner. She's gorgeous and she could run. To me she's the whole package.”

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

Weanlings commanded six of the day's seven highest prices.

The $435,000 weanling, consigned by Elm Tree Farm, agent, is a half-brother to multiple Grade 2 winner Pretty N Cool and is from the family of Grade 1 winner Sean Avery. His dam is Stayclassysandiego, a stakes-placed daughter of Rockport Harbor.

“I've been looking for a really good Justify, and he has a lot of female pedigree, plenty of size and plenty of strength,” buyer Chris Baccari said. “Anybody that looks at him when he goes to be resold will see he looks like he has plenty of bone and looks like he can take a lot of training.

“(The weanlings by Justify) are very good. The public is going to support him now and his yearlings. He was a very good racehorse and I'm a big fan. (This colt) reminds me of his sire. He has a lot of raw strength like he did. The mare is a good producer, and that is what I'm looking for. That is what determines the value to me. He had a good physical, but he has the pedigree to go with it.”

Jody Huckabay, who owns Elm Tree with his wife, Michelle, was pleased.

“This is (breeder) Nancy Shuford's horse, and I think we are pushing 25 years doing business together,” he said. “He was a nice colt and we had the right people on him, but we certainly did not expect that. In this market with everything going on, we are blessed to have the opportunity to sell a horse like that.”

Colts by Justify have been the most expensive weanlings of each of the first three sessions of the November Sale, starting Monday with a $600,000 purchase (a price equaled by a colt by 2015 Triple Crown winner American Pharoah) and a $475,000 buy on Tuesday.

On Wednesday, Justify also sired a colt sold for $375,000 to Michael Fowler. Consigned by Stuart Morris, agent, he is out of Emily B, by Smart Strike, and from the family of Grade 1 winners Awesome Maria, Pretty Discreet, Discreet Cat and Discreetly Mine.

Larry Best's OXO Equine was the day's leading buyer, spending $1.63 million for six broodmares and weanlings. He paid $400,000 for a weanling colt by Into Mischief, whose son Authentic won Saturday's Breeders' Cup Classic at Keeneland, and $360,000 for a weanling colt from the first crop of champion Good Magic, winner of Keeneland's G2 Toyota Blue Grass.

“I tend to go earlier now for (weanlings) as opposed to waiting for them to be yearlings,” he said after buying the Good Magic colt. “You take more risk, but you are not spending the same amount of money. You might get two or three shots on goal for what you'd be paying at the yearling sales.”

Paramount Sales, agent, consigned the son of Into Mischief, who is a half-brother to multiple Grade 3 winner Awesome Slew and stakes winner He's Bankable. The colt is out of the stakes-winning Seeking the Gold mare Slewfoundmoney.

“That was a gorgeous Into Mischief,” said Best, who has been successful racing offspring of the stallion. “Beautiful horse – beautiful walk. You could've told me he was by any other sire and I would've bought him. He just looked so, so good.”

Paramount Sales led all consignors during the session, selling 24 horses for $3,285,000.

Another weanling sold for $400,000 when Stonestreet Stables purchased a filly by Mastery who is a half-sister to undefeated Nashville, winner of Saturday's 6-furlong Perryville at Keeneland in track-record time. Warrendale Sales, agent, consigned the filly, who is out of Veronique, by Mizzen Mast, and from the family of Kentucky Derby winner Giacomo, Grade 1 winner Tiago and Grade 3 winner Stanwyck.

Stonestreet also paid $375,000 for a filly from the first crop of multiple Grade 1 winner City of Light consigned by Eaton Sales, agent. Out of the stakes-winning Flatter mare Cabana, she is from the family of Grade 2 winner Funny Proposition and stakes winners Mr. Importance, Home of Stars, Humorous Miss, Artistic Star and Jazz Quest.

The $360,000 colt by Good Magic sold to Larry Best is a half-brother to Grade 2 winner Lovely Bernadette and from the family of Breeders' Cup winners and millionaires Shared Account and Sharing. Consigned by Bedouin Bloodstock, agent, he is out of the winning Bernstein mare Inlovewithlove.

“I am trying to diversify with different sires,” Best said. “I bought a Mastery, an American Pharoah filly, etc. This one is by Good Magic and was good looking. Physically, this was about as good as you are going to get for a weanling. I expected to get him for $250,000 or $300,000. I had to go a little higher, but the right people were on it.”

Bedouin Bloodstock, agent, also consigned two mares sold for $350,000 apiece.

The first was Gold Souk, a 3-year-old daughter of Medaglia d'Oro who is a half-sister to Grade 1 winner Miss Temple City and is in foal to Speightstown. Coteau Groves Farms/Cary Bloodstock, agent, paid $350,000 for the mare, who also is a half-sister to Grade 3 winner Pricedtoperfection.

“I'm thrilled to get her,” Andrew Cary said. “SF Bloodstock has the mother and family, so she is from a top-class operation. I know the family very well and always wanted to get into that family and am absolutely thrilled to get her.”

The second $350,000 seller was Stephanie's Sister, a 4-year-old full sister to two-time Breeders' Cup winner and $4 million earner Stephanie's Kitten who is in foal to Constitution. Through internet bidding, Koichiro Yamaguchi acquired Stephanie's Sister.
