Amo Racing's Listed Radley S. victrix Magical Sunset (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}–Fikrah {GB}, by Medicean {GB}) had finished off the board in all five starts this term and emerged from the murk to secure a career best in an attritional renewal of Wednesday's G3 Whispering Angel Oak Tree S. at a bleak Goodwood.

The 18-1 chance was settled off the tempo in 10th for most of this seven-furlong contest. Caught in traffic after fanning wide towards the stands' side rail with three furlongs remaining, she weaved a passage into fifth entering the final furlong and plugged on in dour fashion under a late drive to deny Breege (GB) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}) by 3/4-of-a-length nearing the line. Godolphin's second string Dream Of Love (Ire) (Shamardal) was best of the remainder and finished two lengths further back in third.

“I think Magical Sunset would have been unlucky had she been beaten,” commented trainer Richard Hannon. “She is much better on this ground, she won the Radley at Newbury very well on it, and that's helped her today. It looked to me like she didn't get home at Sandown the other day, so we came back to seven furlongs today and I'm delighted. Group races are very hard to win and the owner [Kia Joorabchian] rang me and was very pleased. She is a really sweet filly and she has always been lovely, but she is much better on that ground. She cost a few quid and was unlucky in the Goffs Millions [last year], but is now getting her slice of luck. I think she is entered in a Group 3 in Deauville, so she might go there or wherever the soft ground is.”

Breege's trainer John Quinn added, “Breege coped with the ground, she might like it a bit better, but she coped with it and we are delighted with her. She was seventh in the [G1] Irish [1000] Guineas, which has worked out incredibly well, and she was ready enough to run in Ireland. She ran fantastically at Royal Ascot and she has run fantastically here. She has got invaluable black type at two and three, she is a winner and Royal Ascot-placed. We just want to win a black type race with her, which is well within her compass.”

Pedigree Notes

Magical Sunset is the seventh of nine foals and one of four scorers produced by a daughter of Justbetweenfriends (Diesis {GB}), herself a half-sister to dual Group 3 winner With Reason (Nashwan) and G3 Futurity S. victrix and G1 Fillies' Mile runner-up Jural (GB) (Kris {GB}). The January-foaled bay is a full-sister to the unraced 2-year-old colt Odin Legacy (Ire) and half to G3 Bengough S. third Hey Jonesy (Ire) (Excelebration {Ire}) and a yearling colt by Sottsass (Fr).

Usurped for favouritism by 'TDN Rising Star' Unquestionable (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) in Sunday's G2 GAIN Railway S. at the Curragh, Amo Racing and Giselle De Aguiar's G2 Coventry S. third Bucanero Fuerte (GB) (Wootton Bassett {GB}–Frida La Blonde {Fr}, by Elusive City) gained a measure of compensation for that Royal Ascot reversal with a thrilling victory over his main rival in Sunday's renewal of the six-furlong staging post.

Bucanero Fuerte, a debut scorer over five furlongs on opening day here in March, was swiftly into stride and allowed a gap to build while racing second behind stablemate Lightening Army (GB) (Soldier's Call {GB}), who established a clear advantage by halfway. Easing closer approaching the quarter-mile marker, he locked horns with Unquestionable with 1 1/2 furlongs remaining and refused to yield under a late drive, outbobbing the 15-8 favourite by a short-head in a nip-and-tuck thriller. The pair were 4 1/2 lengths clear of the remainder, headed by the runner-up's Listed First Flier-winning stablemate His Majesty (Ire) (No Nay Never) in third.

“He's a tough horse, we took a chance running him back so quickly after [Royal] Ascot and he didn't let us down,” trainer Adrian Murray said. “[Assistant trainer] Robson [Aguair] said he was on fire during the week and we had no other option only to go for it. He's entered in the [G1] Phoenix S. and he could go to France, but we are not sure yet. We'll give him a bit of a break now as he's had two quick runs. He's a big, backward horse and we are not going to rush him. We'll definitely step him up in trip as that's what won it for him today. We made plenty of use of him because we knew he would see it out. He likes a bit of dig in the ground and, if anything, it was a bit quick for him today.”

Winning rider Rossa Ryan added, “He was very gutsy, the other horse never laid down and this lad stuck his neck out. I'd imagine he'll be a lot happier when he goes up to seven [furlongs] with a bit more juice in the ground. He's got a lovely cruise control and he gave me a super feel throughout. He's got a great mind to top it all off, so I'd say the future is bright with him. Credit to Adrian Murray and his team, they were confident he'd bounced out of Ascot well and it was a big test coming up against one of Aidan's that was fresh and hadn't been to Ascot. They've pulled a nice way clear of the rest.”

Pedigree Notes

Bucanero Fuerte, who becomes the 24th pattern-race winner for his sire, is a full-brother to G1 Prix de l'Abbaye hero Wooded (Ire) and G3 Sovereign S. runner-up Beat Le Bon (Fr). He is also kin to a yearling filly by Dubawi (Ire). The February-foaled bay's dam is out of stakes-winning G2 Premio Regina Elena (Italian 1000 Guineas) runner-up Firm Friend (Ire) (Affirmed) and thus a half-sister to dual stakes-winning G3 Prix de Ris-Orangis second Fred Lalloupet (GB) (Elusive City) and stakes-winning G3 Prix de Cabourg third Mon Pote Le Gitan (Thunder Gulch). Bucanero Fuerte's third dam Cherie Amie (Fr) (Gay Mecene) is kin to the dam of G1 Prix de l'Abbaye third and MGSW sire Magic Ring (Ire) (Green Desert).

Wednesday's G3 Lanwades Stud Nell Gwyn S. at Newmarket was a wide-open affair beforehand, but became a full-on dress rehearsal for HQ's G1 1000 Guineas as Amo Racing's Mammas Girl (GB) (Havana Grey {GB}–Mamma Morton {Ire}, by Elnadim) delivered a devastating turn of acceleration in the closing stages to pulverise her 14 rivals in the seven-furlong staging post. The 16-1 chance had previously debuted with an impressive two-length triumph over course and distance in October and was immediately quoted at odds as low as 6-1 for the Rowley Mile Classic in the wake of a 2 3/4-length tally here.

Mammas Girl was a shade tardy at the break and raced in rear, within range of the leaders, through the halfway point of this sophomore return and black-type bow. Last to come off the bridle after passing the quarter-mile marker, she was shaken up when angled into an open lane approaching the final furlong and went through a range of gears underneath the stands' side fence on the ascent to the line to win, going away, from G3 Prestige S. victrix Fairy Cross (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) for a perfect two-for-two record.

“She won very well here first time, but even so I was slightly worried about the [undulating] track,” admitted trainer Richard Hannon. “She missed the gate today, which I was surprised at, but she's won extremely well. She's very straightforward, she's worked very well all spring and I thought she'd run very well today. I must admit she's surprised me slightly in the way she's won and what I like about her is she's gone slightly under the radar, but we've always loved her at home. She looks a very good filly, but all my Guineas winners–Sky Lantern, Night Of Thunder and Billesdon Brook–were beaten in trials. Hopefully, she bucks the trend as she'll be coming back here [for the G1 1000 Guineas], for sure.”

Amo Racing supremo Kia Joorabchian added, “It's very exciting winning a Nell Gwyn here, it's amazing and I can't hold my excitement, to be honest. We've competed for the last few years and haven't quite managed to get through the line. She gave a cracking performance on her debut and was fantastic today. We've always loved her and we couldn't believe what price she was today. I have a really big [first] weekend [in May] as I've got Affirmative Lady going for the [GI] Kentucky Oaks in America, having won the Gulfstream Oaks quote convincingly. I have to decide whether to go there or come here, but it's a good decision to have to make.”

Pedigree Notes

Group 1-winning rider Kevin Stott has been named the 2023 retained jockey for Amo Racing, Ltd. beginning on Mar. 1.

The 29-year-old, who currently leads the All-Weather Jockeys' Championship, rode a career-high 116 winners in 2022. He was aboard Hello Youmzain (Fr) (Kodiac {GB}) when winning the 2020 G1 Platinum Jubilee.

“We're delighted to have secured Kevin as our number one rider for the 2023 season,” said Amo Racing's Kia Joorabchian. “He is super-talented, and we consider him as one of the top tier elite Flat jockeys.

“I am positive we can provide him with a platform from which he can excel further, and we look forward to a successful partnership.”

Added Stott, “The Amo Racing job is arguably one of the biggest. The strength and depth they have at their disposal is second to none and I'm very excited to be part of the team. I look at this as the beginning of a long and successful partnership.

“I want to ride the best horses in the best races and that is the level Amo operate at. I can't wait to get started.”

Rossa Ryan held the role previously until last summer.

Amo Racing's £900,000 Goffs London graduate Crypto Force (GB) (Time Test {GB}–Luna Mare {Ire}, by Galileo {Ire}) bounced back from a first reversal, when seventh in Royal Ascot's June 18 Listed Chesham S., to loosen Aidan O'Brien's stranglehold on Saturday's G2 Alan Smurfit Memorial Beresford S. over one mile at the Curragh. He had earlier accounted for subsequent 'TDN Rising Star' and G2 Golden Fleece S. victor Auguste Rodin (Ire) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) in his June 1 debut over seven furlongs here and employed patient tactics at the tail of the five-strong field through halfway. Making smooth headway in the straight to go second passing the quarter-mile marker, the 15-2 chance hit the front with 150 yards remaining and drew clear under a drive to subdue Ballydoyle's 4-7 favourite Adelaide River (Ire) (Australia {GB}) by 2 1/4 lengths for a first stakes rosette. Jim Bolger's Young Ireland (Ire) (New Approach {Ire}) finished four lengths further adrift in third.

“I'm delighted for Kia Joorabchian and Amo Racing, because Kia's been a big supporter of mine this year and has let me go away to the breeze-ups and buy some nice horses,” said Michael O'Callaghan. “I bought this lad myself and when he won his maiden I told Kia he was going to the London Sale. He didn't force me to sell the horse to him at home, I brought him to the sale and he paid a lot of money for him. The pressure was very much on me from that point on and it was a massive kick in the guts at [Royal] Ascot. It wasn't to be, he just needed that bit more time and Kia has been very patient. I thought he wanted a mile-and-a-quarter, looking at his homework, and that's why I was happy to see a bit of rain to make the mile a test. He'll be better on fast ground and could make up into a Guineas horse over the winter, but we won't get carried away with ourselves yet. He won that very well, so I'll go back and sit down and talk to Kia. It would be nice to just put him away and train him with next year in mind.”

Crypto Force, who becomes the third group-race winner for his second-crop sire (by Dubawi {Ire}), is full to a yearling colt out of a winning full-sister to the dam of dual stakes-winning G3 Prix Bertrand du Breuil third Jeri (Fr) (Lawman {Fr}). Crypto Force's third dam is Listed Oaks Trial victrix Baraka (Ire) (Danehill), from the family of G1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud hero Youmzain (Ire) (Sinndar {Ire}) and G1 Lockinge S. victor Creachadoir (Ire) (King's Best), is a full-sister to Japanese champion Fine Motion (Ire) and kin to multiple Group 1-winning sire Pilsudski (Ire) (Polish Precedent).

The March-foaled bay, who had posted a May 24 6 1/2-length tally on debut at Wolverhampton, hit the board in both G3 Albany S. and G2 Duchess of Cambridge S. when under the care of Ralph Beckett. She raced too keenly in a first-time hood for her Loughnane debut in York's Aug. 21 G2 Lowther S. and did so again sporting the headgear once more when fourth in Goodwood's Aug. 28 G3 Prestige S. last time. Hello You inched forward from fifth to stalk the leaders in a handy third after an alert getaway in this straight seven-furlong test. Bustled along for her bid approaching the quarter-mile marker, the 7-1 chance gained a narrow advantage entering the final furlong and was driven out up the hill to deny TDN Rising Star Cachet (Ire) (Aclaim {Ire}) by 1 1/2 lengths for a career high. Cachet's pacesetting George Boughey stablemate Oscula (Ire) (Galileo Gold {GB}) kept on well once headed and rallied to finish a half length adrift in third.

“The Amo [Racing] team have thought a lot of her from day one,” said Loughnane. “She was very impressive on debut and you couldn't knock what she did at Royal Ascot. She's been beaten twice now by what could be described as the best 2-year-old filly in the country, in Sandrine. She arrived with us from Mr Beckett's in great order, she's strengthened up loads over the last month and we're very privileged and lucky to have a horse of her calibre in the yard. I think she'd go on any ground, I said that she deserved a Group win beside her name and I'm delighted she's proved herself. We've always felt she'll be better over a mile and she's just outstayed them today over the seven furlongs. I know Kia [Joorabchian] is very keen to potentially have a crack at the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf in Del Mar in November. I'm very grateful for the support the Amo team have given us. They've been a huge asset to the yard.”

Hello You, the fourth of six foals, is one of three scorers and the leading performer out of a multiple-winning half-sister to G1 Prix Maurice de Gheest victor Signs of Blessing (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}). The March-foaled bay is kin to a yearling filly by Kodiac (GB) and a weanling filly by Bated Breath (GB). Her second dam Sun Bittern (Seeking the Gold), a half-sister to the dam of G3 Prix Miesque placegetter Moisson Precoce (GB) (Lawman {Fr}), is an unraced daughter of Listed Cheshire Oaks third Sunray Superstar (GB) (Nashwan), herself a full-sister to G1 Prix Saint-Alary victrix and G1 Prix de Diane runner-up Nadia (GB).

Runner-up in a gruelling renewal of the G2 Norfolk S. at Royal Ascot last Thursday, Go Bears Go (Ire) (Kodi Bear {Ire}) demonstrated his toughness to back up quickly and edge out the G3 Marble Hill S. first and second Castle Star (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}) and Masseto (GB) (Territories {Ire}) in a strong edition of The Curragh's G2 GAIN Railway S. on Saturday. Shadowing the leader The Acropolis (Ire) (Churchill {Ire}) in second throughout, the 17-2 shot who sported the Amo Racing silks was in front two out and refused to buckle from there under Rossa Ryan as he registered a 1 1/4-length success from Castle Star, with the same margin back to Masseto in third. TDN Rising Star Dr Zempf (GB) (Dark Angel {Ire}) was a neck away in fourth.

Successful from the front on debut over five furlongs at Ascot May 8, Go Bears Go was the winner on his side as the stand's-side runner Perfect Power (Ire) (Ardad {Ire}) swooped late in the Norfolk, so he has yet to be beaten when directly engaged in a race. Rossa Ryan was understandably delighted to mark his return from recent injury with the high-profile win. “He ran a super race in the Norfolk–he was just the wrong side,” he said. “We were so positive that he'd stay six furlongs and it was a big toss-up before Ascot between the Norfolk and the Coventry. Dave [Loughnane] took a massive risk coming here a week later, so we're glad it's paid off. He's a top-class sprinter in the making, I think. He's got the best attitude and a big up to Robson Aguiar and his team, who did prep this lad for the breeze-ups and they prep a good few of our yearlings. They did a fantastic job with him. To David Loughnane and all his team, they've been rock-solid. I have the easy job of steering them and I can only say thanks to everybody. I have to give a massive thanks to my boss Kia [Joorabchian] and everyone at Amo Racing, because they had the faith in me to get back on these on such a big weekend and do it.”

Go Bears Go is the last known foal out of In Dubai (Giant's Causeway), a daughter of Bahr (GB) (Generous {Ire}) who captured the G2 Ribblesdale S. and G3 Musidora S. and was runner-up in the G1 Epsom Oaks and third in the G1 Irish Oaks. She was responsible for the G1 Prix de l'Opera and GI Flower Bowl Invitational heroine Nahrain (GB) (Selkirk), who in turn produced the G1 Dubai Turf, G1 Caulfield S. and G1 Grosser Dallmayr-Preis hero Benbatl (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}). Bahr is also the ancestress of the G3 Palace House S. winner Far Above (Ire) (Farhh {GB}).

Ralph Beckett trainee Lullaby Moon (GB) (Belardo {Ire) bagged two of her first three outings before hitting the board in Ayr’s Sept. 19 G3 Firth of Clyde Fillies’ S. and broke through for a first black-type success in Redcar’s Oct. 3 Listed Two-Year-Old Trophy last time. Sent postward as the 11-10 odds for Saturday’s G3 Prix Miesque at Chantilly, she overcame a troubled passage to justify favouritism and earn a career high in the seven-furlong contest. The eventual winner was swiftly into stride and on the lead early, but was shuffled back to race fifth along the rail as keener rivals set each other alight up front after the initial exchanges. Slipping down to seventh and boxed up along the far-side fence in the straight, she made smooth headway to seize the moment when an opening appeared inside the final quarter mile and quickened clear once seizing control with 150 metres remaining to register an ultimately emphatic two-length success from Asterella (Fr) (Olympic Glory {Ire).

Lullaby Moon, who becomes the third pattern-race winner for her freshman sire (by Lope de Vega {Ire}), is one of five scorers from as many runners and the lone stakes representative for Bold Bidder (GB) (Indesatchel {Ire}), herself kin to two black-type performers headed by Listed St Hugh’s S. third Right Answer (GB) (Lujain), who in turn produced the dual stakes-placed Galtymore Lad (GB) (Indesatchel {Ire}). Descendants of her third dam Aryaf (Vice Regent) include MGSW sire Mind Games (GB) (Puissance {GB}) and Listed Taby Open Sprint Championship third Better Built (GB) (Xaar {GB}). Bold Bidder, whose fourth dam is Irish 1000 Guineas heroine Front Row (Ire) (Epaulette {Ire}), has a yearling colt by Ribchester (Ire) and a colt foal by Washington DC (Ire) to come.
