As part of the ARC £1,000,000 All-Weather Bonus initiative, the Horse of The Year bonus has been won by the Grant Tuer-trained Walking On Clouds (Gale Force Ten), who will receive £100,000 after accruing 48 points on the Horse of The Year leaderboard. The 4-year-old's All-Weather season included five wins, four seconds, two thirds and one fifth-placed effort.

In its inaugural season, the ARC £1,000,000 All-Weather Bonus began Oct. 18 before ending on All-Weather Finals Day, Apr. 7. There are cash prizes for horses, who finish in the first 20 positions on the Horse of The Year leaderboard. The full results for the Horse of The Year competition will be confirmed Good Friday.

“I think it's been a great competition,” said Tuer. “The rules of the competition, the makeup of the competition and the monthly prizes with 20 prizes in the Horse of The Year competition has been fantastic. It's got everybody interested, certainly in the North where I am. Everybody is talking about it and it has been great fun. The extra money is fantastic.”

He added, “We're going to try and get into the six-furlong race at Lingfield on All Weather Championships Finals Day. It is a 0-95, so we're not guaranteed a run. If we did get a run we would definitely go there.”

Unless you are riding in the very best races for the best stables, it's not easy being a jockey in Great Britain. Prize money in the bread-and-butter races is dreadful and, even in these lower-level events, the competition for mounts can be fierce. Four years into her career, 22-year-old jockey Grace McEntee had had enough. In search of a better life, she booked a one-way ticket to Kentucky and will begin the next stage of her career Saturday at Turfway Park when she makes her U.S. debut.

“This is very exciting,” said McEntee, who will be joined in the Turfway riding colony by her boyfriend, Tyler Heard. “I have never been to the States before. It will be a completely new world for me and I just want to make the most of the opportunities. I've been riding over here for four years now and I feel I'm at the stage where I'm ready to go on and do something in America. The prize money and the opportunities at home are a lot more limited than they are in America. I'm young enough and in a position where I could move to America and try to take advantage of all the opportunities here.”

McEntee is the daughter of Newmarket trainer Phil McEntee and began riding in 2019. She was neither a star nor a bust, settling in somewhere near the middle of the pack when it came to British riders. She won 24 races in 2021 and 24 this year from 224 mounts.

“I'd get plenty of regular rides, but not in stakes races or in the bigger handicaps,” she said. “The jockeys are so good and so competitive there are very few opportunities at the higher levels. Everyone wants to use one of the top jockeys.”

McEntee's earnings this year were £153,958. She said that jockeys in the U.K. get 8 percent of their horse's earnings, making her 2022 paycheck from prize-money £12,316. That comes out to $14,864.

For McEntee, choosing Kentucky over other U.S. circuits was an easy choice. Not only is the purse money good but she has a number of relatives there who can help her out. Her first Turfway mount will be in Saturday's Gowell S., where she will ride Baytown Lovely (Fast Anna) for Paul McEntee, who is her uncle. Her brother, Jake, is an assistant to trainer Kenny McPeek. She has two other uncles working in Kentucky, one a bloodstock advisor, the other a farm manager.

McEntee was set to travel to Kentucky on Friday and to make her way to the Turfway backstretch Saturday morning to work horses and meet trainers. She has hired Jose Santos Jr. to be her agent. She should not have any trouble adjusting to Turfway's Tapeta surface as many of her winners in the U.K. have come over all-weather surfaces. McEntee said she doesn't know yet if she will stay here permanently and will decide after she sees how much business she gets.

The purse for the Gowell is $125,000 and Baytown Lovely is 20-1 in the morning line. She said she will have a mount on Sunday's card for trainer John Ortiz. The goal is to meet as many trainers as possible and to convince them to give her a chance. She doesn't have to ride in seven races a day. Thanks in large part to the revenue that comes in from Historical Horse Racing machines, maidens go for $70,000 at Turfway and the purse for allowance races is in the neighborhood of $75,000. There's plenty of money to go around. By way of comparison, McEntee's most recent winner came in a Dec. 29 race at Southwell and the purse was the equivalent of $9,000.

“It's pretty simple,” she said. “I can have a better life in the States.”

There will be no turf fixtures at Lingfield Park Racecourse this season between June 4 and Sept. 10 while major drainage work is undertaken at the track. Races from the 14 fixtures scheduled within this timeframe will be transferred to the all-weather course.

This will not affect the Derby and Oaks Trials and G3 Chartwell Fillies' S. to be held on the turf on Saturday, May 7.

“There are a number of areas across the track that will really benefit from further drainage work and, as such, we have made the decision to get it done this summer,” said Lingfield Park's clerk of the course George Hill.

“We are grateful to the BHA for their assistance in moving our June to September fixtures on to the all-weather surface. We undertook some work on the track last year, and were really pleased with the impact, and the work this summer will offer us greater protections for our winter jumps programme and the remedial work that we have to do leading into the spring and summer flat seasons.”

David Probert, Michael Appleby, George Rooke and Godolphin all won divisional titles on All-Weather Championships Day at Newcastle. Probert won his first All-Weather Champion Jockey title with 82 victories.

Probert said, “It was always a goal for me to have a championship since winning back in 2008 when I was champion apprentice. It's a massive achievement and I have plenty of people to thank for that, and hopefully it rolls into a good grass season.”

Appleby, who collected his fifth consecutive trainers' title and sixth overall with 52 winners, said “We have a great team at home–good, dedicated staff, who have been with me a long time. They all work hard and it's well-deserved. I have to thank all the team.”

The All-Weather Winning-Most Horse was Intervention (Ire) (Swiss Spirit {GB}), from Appleby's yard, with five wins. The race for All-Weather Champion Apprentice was very tight, with Rooke prevailing by one winner at 18 over Oliver Stammers and Rhys Clutterbuck. Godolphin was crowned the All-Weather Champion Owner for the eighth year in a row with 43 wins.

Hugh Anderson, Godolphin Managing Director (UK and Dubai), said, “2021 was a banner year for Godolphin, and it is tremendous to begin 2022 with an eighth consecutive Owners' Championship on the all-weather. The all-weather season provides horses with a great introduction to racing over the winter, enabling them to go on to bigger and better things later in the year.

“Our thanks go to the whole team at Godolphin–the trainers, jockeys, and everyone who works in the racing yards. We now look forward to an exciting season on the turf.”

ThoroughBid has catalogued 20 horses in training for the upcoming All-Weather Sale, slated for Jan. 16. Graduates of the online auction will qualify for £30,000 All-Weather Challenge. Among entrants, Mick Appleby's recent Shadwell-bred colt Annaf (Ire) (Muhaarar {GB}), winner at Newcastle Jan. 6 and four-time winner Here and Now (GB) (Dansili {GB}). From Ireland, Joseph O'Brien is offering up a pair of maiden winners–4-year-old colt Talbot (Ire) (Gleneagles {Ire}) and Adelisa (Ire), a 4-year-old daughter of Holy Roman Emperor (Ire).

All horses sold will go on to compete in the £30,000 All-Weather Challenge, where the prize fund will be shared amongst the top three horses based on points scored between Jan. 17 – Apr 28. Points can be registered at any all-weather races held at Chelmsford, Dundalk, Lingfield, Newcastle, Southwell, Kempton and Wolverhampton.

Also Sunday, ThoroughBid will also stage a six-horse draft in the January NH Pop-Up Sale Sunday.

“Every sale is another step forward for us and we're delighted to have again secured the backing of some of racing's top yards for the All-Weather Sale,” James Richardson, CEO of ThoroughBid. “The NH Pop-Up Sale wasn't something that we'd set out to offer originally, but the success of the Christmas Sale left us busy fielding enquiries from vendors with nice National Hunt prospects.”

Pyledriver is the headline act in a quality renewal of the Listed Betway Churchill Stakes at Lingfield Park on Saturday, Nov. 13, one of two Fast-Track Qualifiers on the card.

The popular 4-year-old reappears for William Muir & Chris Grassick having been sidelined since registering a first Group 1 success in the Coronation Cup at Epsom Downs in June, for which he must concede a 7lb penalty to his nine rivals.

Pyledriver is the 7/4 favorite with Betway as he prepares for a foray to Hong Kong next month, with the Marco Botti-trained Felix next in at 4/1. Felix was second in the G3 Betway Winter Derby over the course and distance in February prior to an excellent third behind Lord North in the G1 Dubai Turf at Meydan on Dubai World Cup Night.

David Loughnane is hoping last year's winner Dubai Warrior can rediscover his best form after finishing last on his debut for the stable in the G3 Diamond Stakes at Dundalk in September. Previously trained by John Gosden, Dubai Warrior captured this race impressively 12 months ago as well as the 2020 Betway Winter Derby.

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

Loughnane said: “Dubai Warrior disappointed us first time out at Dundalk. He has been in good form since and needs to take a step back in the right direction.

“We have gone for the eye shields. He has tried them on at home and they seem to have benefited him. We can probably ride him a bit differently – get him to relax – and hopefully he can finish off strongly.”

A classy line up also includes the Andrew Balding-trained Fox Tal. The five-year-old was fourth in the 2019 G1 Champion Stakes and ran one of his best races this year on the All-Weather when a close third in the G3 September Stakes at Kempton Park.

John & Thady Gosden have two contenders in Doncaster conditions race winner Harrovian and Kestenna, who steps up in trip after finishing fifth in the Listed Coral EBF Fleur De Lys Fillies' Stakes at the track last month.

Unexposed 3-year-old Cu Chulainn moves up in class after winning a Kempton Park novice race on his second start. Three-time All-Weather winner Via Serendipity, Dalanijujo and Quemonda complete the field.

The winner of the 10-furlong Betway Churchill Stakes will be guaranteed a start in the £200,000 Betway Easter Classic over the same distance at Newcastle on Finals Day.

Betway Churchill Stakes – Betway prices:
7/4 Pyledriver
4/1 Felix
5/1 Harrovian
15/2 Fox Tal
9/1 Via Serendipity
12/1 Cu Chulainn
16/1 Dubai Warrior, Kestenna
20/1 Dalanijujo
40/1 Quemondo
Each-way 1/5 1,2,3

A place on Finals Day is also up for grabs in the Listed Betway Golden Rose Stakes over six furlongs, a Fast-Track Qualifier for the £150,000 Betway All-Weather Sprint Championships.

All eyes will be on Mark Johnston's runner The Last Lion as he returns from a 1,876-day absence following fertility issues at stud. Now a 7-year-old, The Last Lion was last seen out in the G1 Middle Park Stakes at Newmarket in 2016, when he defeated future champion sprinter Blue Point to give jockey Joe Fanning a first Group 1 victory.

A closely matched field of 12 also includes the last two winners of the Betway Golden Rose Stakes in Good Effort and Judicial, trained by Ismail Mohammed and Julie Camacho respectively.

Exalted Angel posted successive career-best performances over the course and distance last season, taking out the Listed Betway Kachy Stakes in February before going down by a head to Summerghand in the Betway All-Weather Sprint Championships on Finals Day.

Trainer Karl Burke said: “Exalted Angel is really well after a summer break and has been working nicely.

“He clearly handles the track well having put up to good performances at Lingfield last season – it's just a question of whether he is wound up enough to repeat those performances. I am not quite convinced, but he should run well all the same.

“We have saved him for another All-Weather campaign and the main aim is to get him qualified for Finals Day. The fact the final is now at Newcastle is not a problem because he has run well there before.”

There is an international element courtesy of Irish raider Harry's Bar, who is a three-time winner at Dundalk for Ado McGuinness, and Manjeer for French handler Carina Fey.

Misty Grey, a close third behind Exalted Angel in the Betway Kachy Stakes on his latest start, and lightly raced three-year-old Bahrain Pride are other contenders to note.

Betway Golden Rose Stakes – Betway prices:
7/2 Good Effort
6/1 Harry's Bar, Misty Grey
8/1 Bahrain Pride, Judicial
9/1 Exalted Angel
10/1 Fivethousandtoone
11/1 Manjeer, The Last Lion
12/1 Soldier's Minute
16/1 Jouska
20/1 Bimble
Each-way 1/5 1,2,3

Betway's Chad Yeomans said: “It looks a fascinating renewal of the Betway Churchill Stakes, with Group 1 winner Pyledriver the horse they all have to beat. He is the 7/4 favorite with us, which could look a big price in hindsight as he's clear on official ratings.

“The Betway Golden Rose Stakes is also fiercely competitive. Last year's winner Good Effort is solid at the head of the market at 7/2. It's also great to see Betway ambassador Andrew Balding sending Fivethousandtoone to the six-furlong contest. Andrew thought he was a Guineas horse at the start of the season, so it's interesting to see him at this level.”

A total of 390 fixtures will be run in Ireland in 2022, with the fixture list published on Tuesday. There are 387 fixtures on the list at this stage with three 'floating fixtures' to be kept in reserve to be programmed at short notice by the Horse Racing Ireland Fixtures Committee. There will be 346 turf fixtures (up from 339 in 2021) and 44 all-weather fixtures (up from 41 this year). Six Sundays have been kept blank-Apr. 24, June 19, July 24, Aug. 28, Sept. 4 and Oct. 9, and the number of Saturday evening meetings has been reduced from four to three-Bellewstown (July 2), Kilbeggan (Aug. 6), and Tramore (Aug. 13). The Flat season begins at The Curragh on Mar. 26, with Dundalk's Winter AWT Finals conducted the day prior on Mar. 25. Held over a week from July 25-31, the Galway Festival will remain a mixed meeting of Flat and National Hunt cards. The full fixture list may be viewed here.

Jason Morris, HRI's Director of Racing, said, “We continue to see strong growth in our horse population numbers (up 19% year-on-year) and average field size figures (up from 11.8 to 12.3 runners per race), and this is reflected in the increased fixture list that we are announcing for 2022. By retaining three meetings to be allocated at short notice during next year, we can retain flexibility to respond quickly to the demands of the horse population as they materialise in 2022.”
