“He is improving and handles these [soft] conditions, but he's a beautiful mover and will be okay on faster ground as well,” jockey Oisin Murphy said of the winner, who was extending the dominance of foreign raiders in this mile with the last French-trained winner being Ectot (GB) (Hurricane Run {Ire}) in 2013. “He was very relaxed and perfect today. David thought he was very good from early on.”

Impressive on his Sandown debut over seven furlongs in June, Sunway was one of a quintet who suffered defeat behind the subsequent G1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere hero Rosallion (Ire) (Blue Point {Ire}) in Ascot's Listed Pat Eddery S. on King George day who have since captured a significant black-type race. He had Rosallion behind when second to Iberian (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) again over seven in the Champagne at Doncaster last month and as a full-brother to the G1 Champion S. hero Sealiway (Fr) was always going to relish this extra trip.

Menuisier said, “Oisin rode him at home in a canter in May and he was gobsmacked–he said 'that's the best 2-year-old I've ridden all year' and he wasn't even working at that point. He won really well first time out and came out of Ascot lame, so we have to draw a line through that and the form of the Champagne Stakes was amazing. We felt that he had improved as well, so we were quietly confident. He managed to grab the rail, which I think made the difference. Why not the [G1] Poule d'Essai [des Poulains]?–he will have to be entered everywhere.”

Successful here and at Chantilly either side of a third to Havana Cigar (GB) (Havana Grey {GB}) over a six-furlong trip that was too sharp at Chantilly in July, the Andre Fabre trainee was always in his comfort zone tagging on to the back of the field with Mickael Barzalona content to wait.

Allowing White Birch Farm's fellow TDN Rising Star Havana Cigar first run in the straight, the €180,000 Arqana December Foal purchase was finally unleashed wide of the remainder to take control a furlong out en route to a comfortable 2 1/2-length success. The Aga Khan's unexposed Saganti (Fr) (Zarak {Fr}) got up for second, a short neck ahead of Havana Cigar who appeared to tire late.

“His last race was the perfect education to teach him to relax after he had done too much in front on his second start,” Edouard De Rothschild said. “We also made the right decision not to run him in the Prix des Chenes at Longchamp on a day when the temperature reached new heights. He is certainly a very good horse with a lot of talent and it would be nice for his future career at stud to try to win a Group 1 this year, so the Criterium International is a possibility. We will first see how he comes out of this race and then decide then if we run him again this season or wait for 2024.”

In the d'Aumale, Mlle Moliere (Ire) (Kingman {GB}) steps up to the plate for De Rothschild and Ecurie Skymarc Farm and the master of Chantilly. She was impressive when doubling her tally in Deauville's 7 1/2-furlong Prix du Mezeray conditions event at last month's festival and is one of five of the seven fillies holding unbeaten records. They include Shadwell's Alshinfarah (Ire) (Noble Mission), who has won at Doncaster and Haydock and accounted for the impressive subsequent winner Remaadd (Ire) (Gleneagles {Ire}) in the latter contest.

Trainer Kevin Philippart De Foy is hoping for a bold show from the half-sibling of the classy Raabihah (Sea The Stars {Ire}) moving up to a mile. “The family stayed much further and her half-sister ran over a mile and a half in the Arc,” he said. “Noble Mission stayed further as well, so I'm not worried about running over a mile and the ground should suit her. She travelled over there well and it will be interesting to see her against a stronger field.”

“I bought him as a foal in Deauville and he was raised at [Haras de] Meautry,” de Rothschild said. “We do so sometimes and we can compare our crop to others. He has been quite impressive, my first runner with [Bauyrzhan] Murzabayev in the saddle, and we were quite hopeful beforehand.” With no immediate targets on the horizon, and a seemingly patient approach intended, France Galop's President added, “There are no plans at this time, we feel the success is more the result of a true quality rather than precocity.”
