With the 2022 breeding season underway, we continue to feature a series of breeders' mating plans. Today we have Leah Alessandroni, Bloodstock and Office Manager of Bonne Chance Farm.

GLORY AND POWER (m, 8, Medaglia d'Oro – Dance Quietly, by A. P. Indy) to be bred to Essential Quality

We bought this mare as a weanling and she went on to become a winner for us. Her first foal was Momentous (Speightstown), who was an debut impressive winner at Fair Grounds on Feb. 19. This mare is out of a half-sister to MGISW Saint Liam (Saint Ballado) and Quiet Giant (Giant's Causeway), who of course is the dam of Gun Runner, so it's a really big and active family. We bred her to Tapit in 2019 and that colt was really well-received as a yearling. She has a Street Sense yearling that is also really nice.

Knowing that Glory and Power might not yet have a runner when we were looking at matings for 2022, we really thought hard about this mare. We were getting good reports from WinStar on Momentous, we liked all the other foals she'd had, and she was actually one of the last mares we settled on. We decided to send her to Essential Quality. She can be a bit of a tricky mare to mate physically and he is such a good physical. He's a strong horse and his race record speaks for itself. He was one of the more exciting first-year stallions this year. With this mating we also liked that she had already been to Tapit and it's a similar cross, but with Elusive Quality on the bottom it really offers us access to a different line. I think it's a really interesting mating in terms of the pieces coming together and it's one we're very excited about.

IVA (m, 6, Scat Daddy – Sushi Empire, by Empire Maker) to be bred to Quality Road

This is a really special mare for us. She was one of the first foals that was born here at our farm in Kentucky in 2016. We actually bought her dam, Sushi Empire, when she was in foal with Iva. Iva herself became a stakes winner for us, winning the 2019 Cincinnati Trophy S. That was our first blacktype win as breeders. This year Iva had her first foal, an Uncle Mo filly, and it was kind of a full-circle moment for us with her giving us our first second-generation foal as breeders.

This mare is from a really nice family that includes MGSW Marchfield (A. P. Indy) and her dam, Sushi Empire, was also a stakes winner.

Iva is exactly what you would expect a Scat Daddy mare out of an Empire Maker dam to look like. When we were thinking of matings, we wanted a bigger, rangier stallion that offered some stretch. Quality Road had such an incredible 2021 with the champion 2-year-old and he had huge sales. This year he has already had Emblem Road win the G1 Saudi Cup. He's definitely a stallion that when you're looking to breed a quality, proven sire to a young mare, it's a no-brainer. In contrast to Glory and Power, this was probably the first mating that we decided on this year.

GOIABA (m, 8, Speightstown – Christies Treasure, by Belong To Me) to be bred to Curlin

Goiaba is a full-sister to the Japanese Group 1 winner Mozu Superflare (Speightstown). She is another mare that we bought early on as a yearling and she was a winner for us. She is from one of the most active families that we have on the farm right now. Mozu Superflare is doing great things in Japan and she has two half-sisters who have produce Grade I winners or Grade I-placed horses. It's the family of GIIISW Sacristy (Pulpit) and GISP Flor de La Mar (Tiznow).

Goiaba herself is a really nice, honest mare. She's a strong physical and is what we would consider a pretty typical Speightstown mare. She had her first foal last year. It's an Into Mischief filly that is without a doubt the nicest yearling we have this year. This year she is in foal to Medaglia d'Oro.

When we were looking to find a stallion for her this year, we thought long and hard about it. Any time you have a horse with a pedigree like this, you have to look at the big guns and so we settled on Curlin. We actually haven't bred to him yet, and so when we came to the table this year to talk about matings we all agreed that if we didn't use Curlin, we were missing a big opportunity this year. This mating will be offering a different branch of Mr. Prospector and it's maybe not super conventional, but it's another one we're excited about in sending Curlin a mare of this caliber with such an up-and-coming family that is actively producing all over the world. It's one of our biggest star power matings of the year.

LUCAS STREET (m, 18, Silver Deputy – Ruby Park, by Bold Ruckus) to be bred to Maxfield

Lucas Street is one of our more veteran mares here and she is the dam of 2015 GI Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint winner Wavell Avenue (Harlington). We bought this mare privately a few years ago. She had a colt by Improbable this year.

Because she's a proven producer, when we purchased her it was an opportunity to get into some of the more commercial, popular stallion lines. Considering that she's a highly-desirable mare, we really wanted to breed her to a first-year stallion this year. The stud fee price point is usually appealing for those guys and you can see a return at the sales.

The stallion that we settled on for her this year was Maxfield. We are very conscious about who we breed this mare to physically and as soon as he walked out, it was a no-brainer for us. I think he's one of the strongest physicals of the group of stallions this year and he was such an honest, hard-knocking racehorse. With him being a Street Sense out of a Bernardini mare, those are two individual sires that we had considered for her in the past and for whatever reasons we never landed on them, so now we have the opportunity to get to both of those sires here.

From a breeding standpoint, this is going to be a very commercial pedigree and it still gives us a lot of options. If it's a colt, maybe we're a little more commercial. If it's a filly, she will have a strong pedigree under her and we've set ourselves up nicely to have a future broodmare. There was really no downside to this one.

ELEMENTAR (m, 10, More Than Ready – Val Marie, by Coronado's Quest) to be bred to American Pharoah

This is a bit of a younger mare whose pedigree is developing. She is a half-sister to MGSW Grand Adventure (Grand Slam), a champion Grass Horse in Canada. Elementar has had several foals for us including Ready To Purrform (Kitten's Joy), who won the Laurel Futurity last year. Her 2020 foal is a filly by Bernardini and not long after she foaled, we had pretty much decided to keep her to race ourselves. She also has a yearling colt by Runhappy.

The stallion we settled on for her this year is American Pharoah. Every year he has been in the conversation for her, but in the past we weren't sure if she warranted the stud fee. When Ready to Purrform won the Laurel Futurity, the mare earned her way to that level. I think at $80,000 this year for American Pharoah, that has to be a gift with what he's already done this year. This is probably my favorite mating physically. She's a beautiful, balanced mare and all of her foals have been really good movers and I think the same can be said of American Pharoah. This direct cross has already been extremely successful with G1SW Café Pharaoh and MGSW Four Wheel Drive, so all that gave us confidence to send her to him.

MAY BE NOW (m, 14, Smart Strike — Dans La Ville (Chi), by Winning) to be bred to Uncle Mo

May Be Now is a three-quarters sister to GISW Al's Gal (English Channel) and she is the dam of champion and MG1SW Ivar (Brz) (Agnes Gold {Jpn}). This mare was in our operation in South America and she was brought here to our American operation with the intention to sell. We sold her in 2017 in foal to Hard Spun and shortly after, Ivar hit the track and set the world on fire in Argentina. We quickly set to buy this mare back and when we did, she was again in foal to Hard Spun. That filly, foaled in 2020, is now in our racing stable. May Be Now also has a lovely yearling by Yoshida.

She is not in foal this year but we are sending her to Uncle Mo. He's a stallion that we all love. I think we've used him almost every year. This mare has not always been sent to super commercial stallions in the past, so this can generate a commercial mating but at the same time if it's a filly, we have the option of having a really strong broodmare. The mare is a very typical Smart Strike and I think Uncle Mo offers some size that she will benefit from.

With the 2022 breeding season underway, we continue to feature a series of breeders' mating plans. Today we talk to China Horse Club's U.S. Representative Fabricio Buffolo.

CARA MARIE (m, 10, Unbridled's Song — Miss Kilroy, by A. P. Indy) to be bred to Uncle Mo

This mare is a beautiful individual from a European female family that was developed by the late Stonerside operation. They raced her second dam Miss Caerleona (FR) (Caerleon).

This year she goes back to Uncle Mo, which will be the same cross that produced her second foal GIIISW and GISP Girl Daddy. She also has a top-class yearling filly by Uncle Mo, so it's a cross that has been working.

COZZE UP LADY (m, 13, Cozzene — The White Lady, by Johannesburg) to be bred to Charlatan

This is a very nice, straightforward mare. We couldn't have been happier with such a nice comeback to the races this month for her second foal Kimari (Munnings) after selling for $2.7 million last November. Fingers crossed she defends her title in the GI Madison S. at Keeneland this spring.

This mare has a very nice Constitution yearling colt. Cozze Up Lady has proven herself already and now we can try something new. She goes to Charlatan–a horse with plenty of speed that proved to be popular amongst breeders. This cross has a similar characteristic to the cross that produced Kimari, as both Munnings and Charlatan are sons of Speightstown.

EMBELLISH THE LACE (m, 10, Super Saver — Expanse, by Distant View) to be bred to Quality Road

Embellish the Lace is a good-looking mare. You look at her and it's one of those cases where it makes sense that she was a top racehorse, winning a Grade I with just a few starts. She has produced two seven-figure yearlings at the sales, one filly by Tapit called Tap the Faith that won first time out and was fifth in a Grade II as a 2-year-old last year and another filly by Into Mischief that is currently a 2-year-old.

She was already covered by Quality Road this year; it was tried last year but unfortunately, she didn't get pregnant.

MOONLIGHT SKY (m, 9, Sky Mesa — Vargas Girl, by Deputy Minister) to be bred to Curlin

This mare is a stakes-placed half-sister to the great Abel Tasman (Quality Road), who gave so much joy to China Horse Club. We are excited about her, as her first foal Urban (Quality Road) was second in a Grade III already in her 3-year-old campaign. She could be a special mare for sure as the family is live with many updates.

This year she is in foal to Tiz the Law and is going to Curlin. His record with some specific A. P. Indy-line mares is impressive. With A. P. Indy mares, he has had 20% stakes winners to runners, including three Grade I winners. Looking at Bernardini mares, he has had 21 runners and eight stakes winners including five at the graded level. It's worth trying with a Sky Mesa mare as long as both physicals fit together.

YELLOW AGATE (m, 8, Gemologist– Lemon Sorbet, by Lemon Drop Kid) to be bred to Constitution

This mare gave China Horse Club a fantastic thrill by winning the 2016 GI Frizette S. in the red and yellow colors.

She is in foal to Quality Road and will be visiting Constitution this year. Constitution is a sire that has been doing well and should reach new heights with his progeny, having bred fantastic books of mares lately. Tiznow, the sire of Gemologist, has had 11 runners when his daughters crossed with Constitution and the mating has produced GISW Tiz the Law as well as MSW and GISP Never Surprised.

LAST FULL MEASURE (m, 14, Empire Maker — Lazy Slusan, by Slewvescent) to be bred to Quality Road

I think that Last Full Measure is what every breeder aspires to have. She is the daughter of a Grade I winner and she herself is a Grade I winner and producer as the dam of Valiance (Tapit).

This year she is in foal to Constitution. A stoutly-made mare and quite strong overall, she could use some scope and Quality Road seem to be a good fit physically.

SAMBUCA CLASSICA (m, 18 Cat Thief– In Her Glory, by Miswaki) to be bred to Quality Road

This is the dam of GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile S. winner and sire Classic Empire. She has produced several other stakes horses in Uptown Twirl (Twirling Candy), Anytime Magic (Fusaichi Pegasus) and Exclamation Point (Concord Point). In partnership with WinStar, we have a full-brother to Classic Empire called Harvard (Pioneerof the Nile) who could be another stakes horse on her resume.

She is currently in foal to Improbable and will be covered this year by Quality Road. Quality Road has had plenty of opportunities with Storm Cat-line broodmare sires and has produced 11 stakes winners. She is a neater type and should benefit from his scope.

IOTAPA (m, 12, Afleet Alex– Concinnous, by El Corredor) to be bred to Not This Time

This mare was quite versatile at the track having won Grade I races over the dirt and synthetic. On the breeding side, she has always produced good-sized foals like herself.

She went to Improbable last year and is close to foaling. This year she is visiting Not This Time, who has had six graded winners so far and five of those are out of Mr. Prospector-line mares.

With the 2022 breeding season underway, we continue to feature a series of breeders' mating plans. Today we have Cooper Sawyer, farm manager of Mt. Brilliant Farm.

MORENA (PER) (m, 18, Privately Held–Charytin {Per}, by Summing) to be bred to Liam's Map

This mare had a really nice Justify filly that we sold at the [Keeneland] September Sale last year ($375,000 to Japanese trainer Hideyuki Mori). This year she has a Constitution filly.

We are going back to Liam's Map with her this year. Morena herself was a champion in Peru and she's also the dam of Creator (Tapit), who won the 2016 GI Belmont S. We were thinking that Liam's Map, with the Unbridled's Song, would give her a little bit more turn of foot, which she needs.

We're big supporters of Liam's Map. We like the quality horse that he gets you and he's doing some really good things. She's also a really big mare, so he will hopefully tidy her up a bit. I think the biggest thing with this mating is that you'll get the natural speed from his pedigree.

SECRET SOMEONE (m, 11, A. P. Indy–Private Gift, by Unbridled) to be bred to Uncle Mo

Secret Someone was bred and raced by [farm owner] Mr. Greg Goodman, so she's a farm favorite. We kept her first filly by Candy Ride (Arg) and then last year we sold her Into Mischief colt to Mike Ryan for $1 million [at KEESEP].

Her dam Private Gift is one of our foundation mares. We have kept a lot of her fillies and raced them ourselves. We've tried to give this mare the absolute best chance we could. When she raced for us, she was third in the GIII Modesty H. and she won the Kentucky Downs Ladies Turf S.

This mare really hits home on a lot of levels for us, so we've tried to give her a big shot. She gives us beautiful foals. We were over the moon with her Into Mischief colt. I've been keeping up with him and he looks very fast. They're very excited about him.

Secret Someone had a Quality Road colt this year and she will be going to Uncle Mo. The Private Gift family works with so many different sire lines. We gave her Quality Road last year to hit on the line of GISW Dunbar Road (Quality Road) [out of a half-sister to Secret Someone] and the Into Mischief is the same line as MGSW Private Mission (Into Mischief) [half-sister to Secret Someone]. So we decided to go a little different route this year with Uncle Mo. He's a wonderful sire and we've done very well with him. He gives her a little bit of that brilliance you can always expect from him.

PRIVATE GIFT (m, 20, Unbridled–Private Status, by Alydar) to be bred to Into Mischief

Private Gift had a foal later in the season last year so we were not able to get her bred back. This year she is going back to Into Mischief. We were so excited with MGSW Private Mission (Into Mischief), who she foaled in 2018. She was such a beautiful filly. We sent her up to Saratoga and Donato Lanni fell in love with her.

URSULA (m, 5, Tapit–Debonnaire {GB}, by Anabaa) to be bred to Munnings

Ursula is a half-sister to G1P Hartnell (Authorized). We actually sent her dam Debonnaire back to Australia a few years ago. We had gotten several foals out of her here and we decided to keep Ursula. We did put her through a sale but we put a high reserve on her because we liked her so much, so we ended up racing her. She was very talented and ran against some top-class fillies. She ran second in two stakes at Fair Grounds.

She has a Medaglia d'Oro yearling filly and this year she had a stunning Into Mischief filly. We are sending her to Munnings this year. Ursula was talented and has some very nice foals, but we wanted to give her a bit more speed. With her international pedigree, we wanted to give her pure dirt without losing sight of her international flare as a half-sister to Hartnell. She was strictly dirt, but we wanted to give the opportunity for turf to still come through with the Speightstown line.

FAMOUS (Ire) (m, 15, Danehil Dancer {Ire}–Starlight Dreams, by Black Tie Affair {Ire}) to be bred to Tapit

Famous is a full-sister to champion Mastercraftsman (Ire). She was bred to Galileo a lot early and we bred her colt II Paradiso (Galileo) who was third in the G1 Melbourne Cup. We went away from Galileo and bred her to Bernardini, which produced stakes-placed Love Beach who is also in our broodmare band.

Famous was Group 1-placed and she has produced Classic-distance horses everywhere. This is a family we're trying to stay in. We were the underbidders on her daughter Sherbet Lemon (Lemon Drop Kid) at Tattersalls last year. There are all kinds of fillies coming up in this family so we're trying to give it a very good shot.

Famous has a Tapit yearling filly and this year she had a Quality Road filly. We have her going back to Tapit. Her yearling by Tapit is really nice so we wanted to repeat that. Tapit is a universal sire and we've done really well with him. We always say that if you're going to breed to Tapit, just get out of Tapit's way. She's a mare that has been somewhat unlucky in that she's been knocking on the door of being a superb broodmare, so we're giving her every chance we can by sending her to Tapit. We have a lot of confidence in her.

SUPERIORITYCOMPLEX (Ire) (m, 8, Hard Spun – Justlookdonttouch (Ire), by Galileo) to be bred to Tapit

This mare and her sister SW Abingdon (Street Cry {Ire}), who we purchased at Newmarket, are exactly what we're looking for in our program. They're mares that have older American families that have gone on to be successful in Europe and we try to bring them back here. We want to be able to take these types of mares and throw some good, old-fashioned dirt back into them and make them great American families again. This is a family that we think is knocking on the door to being a great American family.

We actually raced this mare here in America. She was fourth in a stakes at Arlington.

We first bred her to Into Mischief and got a $1.35-million colt purchased by Winchell Thoroughbreds last year. Unfortunately, she lost her Justify last year. She is now in foal to Tapit and then she will be going back to Tapit. We've been lucky with Tapit and figured it was a great opportunity to use him again. We want to breed to Tapit every chance we can get. We couldn't have been happier with the result from the Into Mischief and we have very high hopes for this mare as a producer.

LOOK ME OVER (m, 5, Hard Spun–Wasted Tears, by Najran) to be bred to Quality Road

As the half-sister to GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner Corniche (Quality Road), we figured we would take a flyer and send her to Quality Road. It's a pretty obvious mating. We bought her last year at the Keeneland November Sale. We love Corniche and think he has a very bright future. We've been using Quality Road a lot and really like him. The trend is your friend, so we're not going to go against it.

Look Me Over is in foal to Kitten's Joy this year and we're really excited to see that foal and then send her to Quality Road.

SKY GIRL (m, 12, Sky Mesa–Vargas Girl, by Deputy Minister) to be bred to Maclean's Music

This is the half-sister to champion Abel Tasman (Quality Road). We have done very well with her in the auction ring. We sold a Quality Road yearling for $775,000 to David Ingordo last year. She has an Uncle Mo yearling filly who is a big, Indian Charlie-looking filly and then this year, she is in foal to Nyquist.

This year she is going to Maclean's Music. We have been using him for a while. We wanted to give this mare as much speed as possible. Maclean's Music is no secret anymore and his one start was, as everyone says, jaw-dropping. We figured that the A. P. Indy coming from Pulpit with her is a really good cross with him. We've used Maclean's Music a lot recently. We like what we are seeing out of his foals, so we believe in him enough to throw this kind of mare at him.

ITHINKISAWAPUDYCAT (m, 13, Bluegrass Cat – Unbridled Run, by Unbridled) to be bred to Curlin

This is an awesome mare; she's been very good to us. She's the dam of GISW Sweet Loretta (Tapit). We have had very nice-looking foals out of her and have raced almost everything out of her. We have her Tapit colt Predicted who is doing well and is in training now. We sold her Uncle Mo filly last year and this year we have a Quality Road yearling filly who is exceptional. She has a lot of leg and she's very classy and forward-looking. We can't wait to show her to the team at Fasig-Tipton for Saratoga.

I think if we were going to be critical of this mare, she doesn't put as much substance into her foals. They're all very athletic but they're medium-sized. This year we are sending her to Curlin, who I think will give her more substance to get that top-class, superior racehorse.

We put a lot of thought into our matings with Greg, Hutton and Bo Goodman, Marette Farrell and myself. We go through so many different things. It takes a lot for us to breed to an unproven stallion. We almost always go proven. We don't care who everyone else is breeding to. We try to breed the best athlete we can to get the best racehorse. Putting that in mind, Curlin jumped out at us this year. We've used him in the past and I think he's what we're looking for to get a bit more substance out of this mare.

With the 2022 breeding season underway, we continue to feature a series of breeders' mating plans.

With the 2022 breeding season underway, we continue to feature a series of breeders' mating plans. Today we have Brian Moore of Brushy Hill, LLC, breeder of recent G1 Saudi Cup winner Emblem Road (Quality Road).

Before getting into Brushy Hill's mating plans this year, we asked Moore about the story behind the mating, which was put together by the late Mike Recio, that produced Emblem Road.

“That was a Mike Recio special,” Moore said. “All the matings up until last year and our entire portfolio is because of Mike's involvement. Emblem Road's dam Venturini (Bernardini) was out of a great race mare from a really exciting family. We bought her in foal to Temple City in 2016 and we felt like we got a great deal at $62,000. That first foal by Temple City went up to Canada and was stakes placed there. At that point we felt like we had a little bit of support behind the mare, so we wanted to go big with her breeding. Mike was super high on Quality Road that year and felt like he was the big horse on the upswing. Turns out he was right.”

Emblem Road fetched $230,000 at the 2019 Keeneland September Sale with South Point Sales Agency.

In 2020, Venturini produced a colt by Nyquist who sold for $185,000 at the Keeneland January Sale to OXO Equine, but Moore said the mare died shortly after foaling that year.

“It's unfortunate because we've done so well with all the babies out of her. She was producing runners, so it will be exciting to see what will happen with the Nyquist colt and hopefully this is the jumping off point for Emblem Road. We'll be watching and rooting for him.”

Moore said that Brushy Hill's program will be sending 15 mares to the breeding shed this year. While at one point they had over 25 mares, he said they have since scaled back due in large part to the loss of partner and advisor Recio.

“It was kind of a regrouping because he was our partner in a lot of these and obviously the advisor on all of them,” Moore explained. “We also thought that last year was a good time to do it. We weren't sure what the market would look like this year so we didn't want to get caught holding too much.”

Moore noted that maintaining a boutique-sized broodmare band helps them focus on their goal of seeking quality over quantity.

“It allows us to pick stallions that we really like without getting bogged down on what our total stud fee bill looks like,” he said. “I think the market is such that you have to breed to quality. Everyone knows that the middle market can be tough, so you have to try to play to the top of the market as best you can. For us, that means finding mares that maybe didn't make it as superstar racehorses but have quality, exciting, active families.”

ALMADA (m, 8, Lonhro (Aus) – Amerique (Ire), by Galileo (Ire)) to be bred to Violence

This year Almada will be going to Violence. Of course he was hot when he came off the track and we have always loved him.

Almada is a really nice mare out of a great European family. She had a filly a few years ago that we sold to Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners called Dressed (More Than Ready). We expect great things from her this year and we think the mare will get support from her on the track, so we're going back to a really nice, proven stallion for Almada. She had an Improbable colt a few days ago. We went unproven last year and this year we're going back to proven.

CATENARY (m, 7, Arch – Grand Pauline, by Two Punch) to be bred to Good Magic

Catenary is a big, beautiful Arch mare from the family of GIISW Keen Pauline (Pulpit). She never really made it as a racehorse but we love an Arch mare any chance we can get one and obviously her family is impressive. She had terrible luck last year from a breeding standpoint and with her being such a big mare, we have to be really careful about getting huge foals.

This year we are sending her to Good Magic. He has had some tremendous foals. While most of what we do is to sell, if we end up with a good filly that's by Good Magic and out of a nice Arch mare, that is something we would be totally content to keep and race in our own stable. We look at everything in terms of being as commercial as possible without getting to the point to where it's not something we would want to race ourselves.

CELIA'S SONG (m, 7, Distorted Humor – Warbling, by Unbridled's Song) to be bred to Audible

Celia's Song is named after my daughter, so she's one that will stick around with us for a while. We bought her as a 2-year-old and she won some races for us. She had a beautiful Ghostzapper colt last year. She foaled late, so we decided to keep her open.

This year she is going to Audible. Everyone loves Audible and is doing well with him. We've had a couple Audible fillies and have loved every single one we've seen, so this was an easy choice.

FORENSIC (m, 11, Medaglia d'Oro – Criminologist, by Maria's Mon) to be bred to Practical Joke

This mare is out of a great family and we also used to own her dam, a multiple stake-producing mare. Forensic was one of the first mares we bought for our breeding program, so she's another one that is a sentimental favorite.

Going back, this mare has had a Lemon Drop Kid, a Flatter, a Mastery and a Speightstown. It's a really blue-blooded family and she's a nice Medaglia d'Oro mare, so we try to breed her to as much class as we can. She will be going to Practical Joke. He's one that was a great horse to watch on the track and we've been big supporters of him. It's an easy decision for us to breed to Practical Joke. The battle we have is cutting the list down of who we want to send to him because he checks so many boxes of what we're looking for in a stallion. Plus, Forensic is a smaller mare with a slighter frame and we think Practical Joke will complement some of her size shortcomings.

OSAGE TREATY (m, 5, Declaration of War – Legendary Peace, by Peace Rules) to be bred to Mitole

This is a really beautiful mare. She was a $170,000 yearling and a nice turf mare, which we always like. We first bred her to Street Boss and this year she will be going back to Mitole. Last year we had one Mitole foal that we absolutely love. I know this is his third year which is always a roll of the dice, but he was such an impressive racehorse that we think adding speed to her turf pedigree is going to be really exciting. It's an easy formula for us.

VENKAT (m, 7, Distorted Humor – Stormy Welcome, by Storm Cat) to be bred to Upstart

We love her family and this mare is beautiful physically. We kind of struggled with her this year in deciding what we wanted to do with her, but in the end it was kind of a roll of the dice but we're going to go with Upstart. He's a horse that we've always liked. I really like Flatter as a stallion. When we started breeding, he was relatively new and we really liked the foals we had by him. I think Upstart is great value at $10,000 this year and I've always liked how Airdrie has managed their stallions. If we're right and he has a big year this year, with this mare's page I think we have the opportunity to do really well with the horse.

With the 2022 breeding season underway, we continue to feature a series of breeders' mating plans. Today we have Jake Bennett of Pike Place Farm.

“My wife, Jaclyn, and I have just recently moved to Kentucky to start up our breeding operation,” said Bennett. “We have a small farm in Georgetown with four broodmares (three that we will get bred this year), a retired gelding (that I joke is my wife's horse), one yearling that we are preparing to sell this fall after acquiring him at the Keeneland November sale, and one 2-year-old that is back home in Seattle preparing for his racing career.”

EURASIA (m, 7, Pioneerof the Nile–Laurasia, by Black Mambo), to be bred to Vekoma

We first acquired this mare as part of our racing operation and she had some tough luck unfortunately. She is just beautiful and was a $135,000 purchase as a 2-year-old. She is inbred to some influential female lines and the great broodmare, Lassie Dear, and stems from the well-respected breeding operation of Bonnie Heath and his family down in Florida. She is due to drop a Mo Town foal any day for her first foal and she will be bred back to Vekoma. This may be the mating we are most excited about overall; we strongly feel Vekoma has every right to be a top-tier stallion given his pedigree and race record. This appears to be a great match for our mare in terms of physical compatibility, as well as the cross of Candy Ride (Arg) over sons of Unbridled, breeding the Fappiano line back through itself, proving to show an affinity for top-notch racehorses with a most recent example being Rock Your World.

GETINTHEREONETIME (m, 17, Bertrando–Common Hope, by Storm Cat), to be bred to Gift Box

This is a half-sister to champion Shared Belief (Candy Ride {Arg}) that we recently acquired. We will be breeding her to Gift Box to try to recreate some of the magic that the cross between Candy Ride and this female family created. Candy Ride and his son Twirling Candy both had such modest beginnings and, as I've already mentioned, we really love this sire line. Gift Box himself is an outstanding individual, he's priced right and we're hoping to get this mare on track to produce some runners and carry on a deep female family that has been nurtured over the years by the Wygod family.

MOONSTONE MAGIC (m, 11, Malibu Moon–Never Fail, by Holy Bull), to be bred to Vino Rosso

We purchased this mare just before moving to Kentucky this fall and we're excited to have her here in the bluegrass and optimize her potential to produce some quality foals. She strongly resembles her broodmare sire, Holy Bull, and is a bit of a throwback type physically: full bodied with lots of bone. She was a nice allowance runner at a mile and a sixteenth and we feel she can throw a true classic type of horse. Her female family is laced with plenty of black-type runners and producers and has seen success when bred to sons of Mr. Prospector, including Abraaj, the sire of one of our other mares. With this in mind, we decided to breed her to Vino Rosso. This is a cross that has been tried and true: Curlin/A.P. Indy and their sons. We feel this mating really clicks on all cylinders from a pedigree standpoint as Curlin also has enjoyed success when mated to Holy Bull mares including his son Connect, who is off to a great start at stud. Vino Rosso was such a talented horse that really blossomed over time in his career. Being a son of Curlin and hailing from a rich female family, we're excited to see his first runners hit the track.

Sierra Farm was founded by Ed and Sharon Hudon in 2006. Following the passing of her husband in 2018, Sharon took over the operation and the farm was recently sold to Matt Dorman's Determined Stud in December of 2021. Sierra Farm sold four mares at last year's Keeneland November Sale and the remaining mares moved to Greenfield Farm.

Sierra farm manager Mike Callanan said that of the current broodmare band, many will point to this year's Keeneland November Sale but added that Hudon may retain several to maintain a small broodmare band. Callanan said they kept that objective in mind as they prepared mating plans for this year.

“This year is a little different with the farm selling,” he explained. “We had to be a little more commercial than usual. We have one eye down the road in November because we plan to have a couple sold then, so that fact has influenced a lot of what we've done. We're trying to do the right thing by the mares but at the same time cover our bases for on down the road.”

ANGEL NUMBER (m, 6, Lemon Drop Kid – Ascending Angel, by Pulpit) to be bred to Constitution

This mare is a half-sister to GISW Nadal (Blame) and she is currently carrying her first foal by Speightstown. She is due any day. She's a big, strong, beautiful mare so physically, we think we could breed her to anything.

We will be sending her to Constitution. He is really one of the most exciting sires out there right now and she is one of our best mares. She's a young mare, so we want to give her every shot and I think no matter what way it plays out in November, we will be great there.

BSHARPSONATA (m, 17, Pulpit – Apasionata Sonata, by Affirmed) to be bred to Silver State

Bsharpsonata has been a very good mare to us. We sold a million-dollar yearling out of her and she is a multiple stakes producer. She had a late foal in 2020, so we gave her a year off last year and then bred her to Nyquist. She is due any day. She is 17 years old now, so we want to be commercial with her without putting an exorbitant amount of money into her.

We love Silver State at Claiborne. He's a big, beautiful-looking horse. She's a Pulpit mare, so a very strong, powerful-looking mare but not the biggest in the world. If you can breed her to something with a little bit of leg, I think it would really help her and you don't often get Hard Spuns with the kind of leg Silver State has. I think he's is a really nice horse.

MISCHIEFFUL (m, 4, Into Mischief – Shanon Nicole, by Majestic Warrior) to be bred to Essential Quality

This filly was stakes placed sprinting at Saratoga and she was very fast as a 2-year-old. We retired her last year and she is going to Essential Quality. We kind of had Essential Quality in mind for another mare, but Darren [Fox] talked us into sending this mare to him. Darren liked the fact that she was a fast-looking horse and physically, would suit Essential Quality. Normally we don't like to breed maiden mares to first-year sires, but I think Essential Quality was an exceptional racehorse. Physically, it ticks the box and if this horse goes to November, it will be a commercial mating.

JUMP UP (m, 14, Jump Start – Susie Joe's, by Bertrando) to be bred to Maxfield

This is the dam of SW Amy's Challenge (Artie Schiller). She's a big, good-looking mare and she has already produced a really nice horse. I think Maxfield is well-priced and he was a really nice racehorse. From a commercial point of view in whatever direction we decide to go, I like this cross a lot. We bred her to Kitten's Joy two years in a row and Amy's Challenge is by Artie Schiller, so we wanted to try something a little bit different.

SCANDALOUS SONG (m, 12, Unbridled's Song – My White Corvette, by Tarr Road) to be bred to Hard Spun

This mare is a half-sister to champion Stardom Bound (Tapit) and she is already a stakes producer. This year we will be sending her to Hard Spun. I think Hard Spun is a great value at [$35,000]. Every year he produced runners. She's a big, tall mare so I think he should strengthen her up a bit. From a physical point of view, it ticks every box that we're looking for in a mating.

Peter Brant owns some of the best mares in the world, some of which he keeps in Europe–at Coolmore in Ireland and Haras des Capucines in France–and some in America, at Claiborne Farm. We spent a fascinating half-hour on the phone with Brant going through his 2022 matings for some of his best mares. “I spend a lot of time doing this,” he said. It shows.

UNI (GB) (m, 8, More Than Ready–Unaided {GB}), by Dansili {GB}), to be bred to Frankel (GB)

Uni is in foal to Kingman (GB), and she's going back to Frankel. She was a great mile, mile-and-a-sixteenth horse. Frankel gets very classic horses. Their conformation is very complementary to one another. They're both really good-looking horses.

BEAUTY PARLOUR (GB) (m, 13, Deep Impact {Jpn}–Bastet {Ire}, by Giant's Causeway), to be bred to Frankel (GB)

Beauty Parlour won the French Guineas and she's the dam of Blowout (GB). She's going to Frankel. She was second in the Prix de Diane, but she's really a mile to a mile-and-sixteenth horse and Frankel will give her more distance. I like the cross on Beauty Parlour with Galileo (Ire).

DUNBAR ROAD (m, 6, Quality Road–Gift List, by Bernardini), to be bred to Into Mischief

Dunbar Road was just second, beaten a nose in the Breeders' Cup Distaff. She's by Quality Road, and as a maiden mare, she's going to Into Mischief. She's a classic mile-and-an-eighth to mile-and-a-quarter horse. I like to breed Into Mischief to middle-distance to classic-distance horses, to a mare that would stay, so we thought that would be a very good match.

CAFE AMERICANO (m, 6, Medaglia d'Oro–Roxy Gap, by Indian Charlie), to be bred to Tapit

Cafe Americano just had an Into Mischief filly on Tuesday. She will be bred back to Tapit. Tapit crosses really well with Medaglia d'Oro. She is a rangy kind of mare who is tall, and Tapit fit her in the cross and on the conformation. I wanted to have a chance of either a grass or dirt horse from her.

ENCHANTED ROCK (m, 18, Giant's Causeway–Chic Shirine, by Mr. Prospector), to be bred to Gun Runner

Enchanted Rock is the dam of Verrazano (More Than Ready). She was bred to Curlin in 2021, and she's going to Gun Runner. This is the first time I have used him. She's a very big mare and we thought Gun Runner would suit her for a dirt horse. She has been the dam of some good dirt horses, and she has an old King Ranch pedigree. She is a very, very good mare.

NAPLES PARADE (m, 8, Street Cry {Ire}–Treasure Trail, by Pulpit), to be bred to Into Mischief

Naples Parade was one of Ed Cox's mares. She was the sister to Long Island Sound (War Front) and she is out of a half-sister to Zenyatta (Street Cry {Ire}). She's got a lot of dirt in her family, she's by Street Cry, and Long Island Sound was a turf horse, but that's a good cross with Into Mischief. They suit each other conformation-wise, and Into Mischief gets more stocky-looking horses.

WOW CAT (CHI) (m, 8, Lookin At Lucky–Winter Cat {Chi}), by Cat Thief), to be bred to Into Mischief

We are also breeding her to Into Mischief. She was second in the Breeders' Cup Distaff, she won the Beldame, came from Chile (where she was Horse of the Year in 2018), won a number of Group 1s in Chile and she is one of the best-looking mares we've had. She's a distance horse, a mile-and-a-quarter horse and we want to breed the best mile-and-a-quarter horses to Into Mischief.

Champion Sistercharlie won the 2018 Breeders' Cup F/M Turf | Breeders' Cup/Eclipse Sportswire

PAID UP SUBSCRIBER (m, 10, Candy Ride {Arg}–Shriek, by Street Cry {Ire}), to be bred to Tapit

Paid Up Subscriber is going to Tapit. She is in foal to Into Mischief, and she hasn't foaled yet. Tapit has a tendency to get a distance horse. Plus, she's really a mile-and-a-sixteenth mare with a big girth and Tapit sometimes gets horses who are a little bit smaller. I thought the cross was great in terms of Candy Ride and Tapit.

FIFTY FIVE (m, 8, Get Stormy–Soave, by Brahms), to be bred to Sottsass (Fr)

Fifty Five had a Dubawi (Ire) filly this year. She is going to Sottsass. She was a brilliant miler and it's a little bit of inbreeding to Northern Dancer, which I like far back in the pedigree. There are some good female families in there. I like to cross horses that have great females in their history–super mares that were great racemares and great producers.

BLOWOUT (GB) (m, 6, Dansili {GB}–Beauty Parlour {GB}, by Deep Impact {Jpn}), to be bred to Frankel (GB)

Blowout goes to Frankel. She just won the [GI] First Lady at Keeneland this fall. She was a very, very good seven-furlong to a mile-and-a-sixteenth horse. I like Frankel with the Galileo (Ire) cross with Dansili. It's good Wildenstein blood and it's a classic cross. On conformation, they both suit each other.

HOMERIQUE (m, 7, Exchange Rate–Chiquita Picosa, by Congaree), to be bred to Dubawi (Ire)

She won graded stakes in the U.S. and Europe. She is ready to foal a Kingman (GB) foal and she is going back to Dubawi.

NEWSPAPEROFRECORD (IRE) (m, 6, Lope de Vega {Ire}–Sunday Times {GB}, by Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}), to be bred to Kingman (GB)

Newspaperofrecord is going to be bred to Kingman. I like the idea of a miler to a miler, and Kingmans in the U.S. have been running longer. We thought that's a horse we'd like to run in the U.S. That's why we chose him. Last year, she was bred to Frankel (GB).

PRECIEUSE (IRE) (m, 8, Tamayuz {GB}–Zut Alors {Ire}, by Pivotal {GB}), to be bred to Wootton Bassett (GB)

Precieuse, who won the French 1,000 Guineas, is in foal to Kingman (GB) and she's going back to Wootton Bassett. She's a quick horse. Wootton Bassett gets a mile to a mile-and-a-quarter horse. We thought the conformation suited the cross very well.

SIGNIFICANT FORM (m, 7, Creative Cause–Church by the Sea, by Harlan's Holiday), to be bred to Sottsass (Fr)

She just had a Dubawi (Ire) colt, and she is going back to Sottsass. She won the Miss Grillo and the Ballston Spa. She's a very rangy horse that's very good with that Siyouni (Fr) blood. It's speed. It carried the distance. We like that for Significant Form. She was limited up to a mile-and-a-sixteenth, but she was top class up to that. We wanted to put some distance into her. She's beautiful. Great conformation.

SISTERCHARLIE (IRE) (m, 8, Myboycharlie {Ire}–Starlet's Sister {Ire}, by Galileo {Ire}), to be bred to Dubawi (Ire)

It's a great cross, and Dubawi gets some nice speed milers and she was very fast, but this will put a little more speed into her. Sistercharlie's dam has been bred to Dubawi, with success.

Fred Hertrich III, along with partners John Fielding and Rob Tribbett, celebrated an exceptional year after their breeding program produced six Grade I winners in 2021: Americanrevolution (Constitution), Beyond Brilliant (Twirling Candy), Hit The Road (More Than Ready), Juju's Map (Liam's Map), Maxim Rate (Exchange Rate) and Pinehurst (Twirling Candy).

Such an achievement has led to many asking Hertrich the warranted question, 'What's your secret?'

He doesn't have one good answer other than this: “There's no magic to it, but there is a secret sauce and that sauce is luck,” he said. “Think of all the people involved in getting a horse to the winner's circle for a Grade I. One day we counted it up and guessed that 60 different individuals were involved in the process from when the mare was bred and when she foaled through when the foal went through the sale, and then the foal can take varied paths based on where it's broken, who trains it and of course the jockey. All you have to have is one glitch in that entire process and that horse may never even get to the track.”

Hertrich said he enjoys the in-depth strategic project that comes with drawing up mating plans for his commercial breeding operation each year. With over 100 mares visiting the breeding shed this year, the process is far from a one-day task.

Before breeding season begins each year, Hertrich will sit down with a panel that includes partner John Fielding, partner/advisor Rob Tribbett and Shane Doyle, the farm manager for Hertrich's Watercress Farm who Hertrich refers to as the conformation expert of the group.

As the panel makes plans for their young mares, Hertrich said their number one goal is to get winners on the mare's progeny record early in her career.

“They have to produce a horse that can run so that everyone can look and say that mare is a great producer,” he explained. “If a mare can't produce runners, it really doesn't matter how well her foals sell.”

According to Hertrich, this approach doesn't necessarily mean that an unproven mare will always visit a proven stallion.

“We do some analytics with it and while you're trying to get a runner, it may be that a first-crop sire conformationally and genetically fits that mare better than anything else. For the six Grade I winners we had, they are by five different stallions. It's not an exact science and that's why the guy with the most money doesn't always win.”

When evaluating mares that have already produced runners, he said it comes down to the balancing act of producing a horse that will have commercial appeal but can also conceivably have success on the track.

“It becomes an economic decision as to how do we maximize value of the foals from that particular mare with a mating that will give us the individual that will produce the best results,” he said. “We always lean toward [a focus on] race performance.”

Hertrich's strategy is perhaps atypical for many commercial breeders pointing their foals for the sales.

“There are some guys who just breed commercially and they're always trying to get Miss America into the yearling ring,” he explained. “That's great, except can Miss America go out and run? If she doesn't, you're only going to trick the market for so long.”

Fred Hertrich | Keeneland

Hertrich acknowledged that his program does have the luxury of not always needing to have progeny by the flavor-of-the-month sire to have success at the sales because many people seek out horses coming from his operation.

“The great thing is that over time, because of the results owners and trainers have had with us, we have built-in clients who come to the farm and want to buy from us because they know how we raise a horse and care for a horse, so they want to be involved in that process.”

While Hertrich always has his eye on the long game in this business, he acknowledges the high risk involved in the game he plays, citing how just last week they had a dystocia with one mare and ended up losing the foal but then had two healthy fillies on the ground three hours later.

“When someone says they want to go into the breeding business, I always tell them to make sure they really look at it before they get into it,” he said. “The breeding business is not for the faint of heart. How many great horses either are never foaled or get injured? It's a high-risk game.”

Hertich passed the baton to advisor and partner Rob Tribbett to discuss mating plans for a few of their top mares.

ALWAYS AUDITIONING (m, 16, Mizzen Mast – Nawal (FR), by Homme de Loi (Ire)) to be bred to Catholic Boy

Always Auditioning is the dam of GIISW Ready to Act (More Than Ready). This year we are booking her to Catholic Boy. He's a horse that we are obviously a bit biased on because we bred him, but we're big believers in him with not only the speed that he showed but also his determination and versatility. There aren't many stallion that have done what he's done on the track. This mating will produce a three-quarters sibling to Ready to Act, who of course is by More Than Ready.

BRAZEN PERSUASION (m, 11, Indian Charlie – Beholden, by Cat Thief) to be bred to McKinzie

This mare was a recent purchase of ours at the November Sale last year. She was a really good 2-year-old. She won the 2013 GIII Schuylerville S.

We are going to breed her to McKinzie, who is a horse that we really like because he was brilliant at two as a Grade I winner, but he was also durable enough to be a Grade I winner at three and four. We also love that McKinzie's dam, Runway Model (Petionville), won the GII Alcibiades S. We love to breed to those stallions that have a pedigree full of brilliance. I like this mating a lot because you're taking the brilliance of the mare, who was such a good 2-year-old, and putting it with a lot of speed from both McKinzie and his dam.

CATCH MY EYE (m, 13, Unbridled's Song – Sharp Eyes, by Storm Cat) to be bred to Curlin

This is the dam of GISW Maxim Rate (Exchange Rate). She's by Unbridled's Song, who we know is one of the best broodmare sires out there.

This year we are sending her to Curlin. Maxim Rate is a turf filly, but with matching this mare's pedigree to Curlin, we think it's a chance to produce that successful Classic-type runner. We think it's certainly within this mare's range of ability and Curlin is obviously one of the best stallions out there when it comes to getting that type of horse.

HOT CHA (m, 7, Bernardini – Hot Water, by Medaglia d'Oro) to be bred to Not This Time

Hot Cha is a young Bernardini mare that is from the family of champion Xtra Heat (Dixieland Heat). Again, I love mares that have speed in their family and there aren't too many fillies faster than Xtra Heat. This mare is a half to Hot and Sultry (Speightster), who just won really impressively at Oaklawn.

We are going to breed her to Not This Time. We think that the start he's gotten at stud with a lower stud fee was really impressive and is the mark of a stallion who could end up being a top-tier stallion after succeeding with those mares bred on a lower stud fee. As he gets these better books, I think the sky is really the limit for him.

LUNAR EMPRESS (m, 9, Malibu Moon – Holy Princess, by Holy Bull) to be bred to Liam's Map

This mare is from a really good family of stakes producers and she was very talented on the racetrack herself. She was a maiden special weight winner at Santa Anita and was fourth in the GI La Brea S. She's by Malibu Moon, who is another good broodmare sire.

We are going to breed her to Liam's Map, the sire of GISW Juju's Map that we bred in 2019. We're trying to raise runners; that's our main goal and then the commercial thing comes after that. Liam's Map certainly gives you a chance to have a great runner and they're going to be commercially-appealing horses as well.

MISS ARRANGEMENT (m, 11, Mr. Greeley – Shy Greeting (Arg), by Shy Tom) to be bred to Honor A.P.

Miss Arrangement was a maiden special weight winner on debut at Keeneland and she already had a yearling sell at Saratoga for $400,000.

We are going to breed her to Honor A.P. He's a horse that we have a lot of confidence in. He was such a talented horse and the win he had over Authentic in the GI Santa Anita Derby was really an impressive race. Like McKinzie, he's out of a top-class race mare which I think is such an added benefit when you're looking at a stallion prospect.

MO MUSIC (m, 4, Uncle Mo – Harmony Lodge, by Hennessy) to be bred to Authentic

Mo Music is carrying her first foal by Street Sense now. She is out of Harmony Lodge, who was another filly with a lot of speed. It's a really great female family.

We will be sending her to Authentic. With the natural speed that Authentic had and the stamina he had to carry that speed, we think it is a great match with this mare because there's already so much speed and class coming from her family.

NAGAMBIE (m, 9, Flatter – Charming N Lovable, by Horse Chestnut (SAF)) to be bred to Gun Runner

This is the dam of GISW Juju's Map (Liam's Map). She is currently in foal to Not This Time, who is the brother of Juju's Map's sire. This year she will be going to Gun Runner. Other than maybe Uncle Mo, it's hard to recollect another horse that had such a good first crop. Gun Runner was such a good racehorse and there's really no holes to him as a sire.

POLLY FREEZE (m, 9, Super Saver – Elusive Gold, by Strike the Gold) to be bred to Constitution

This is the dam of Americanrevolution (Constitution), who won the 2021 GI Cigar Mile H., as well as Bold Journey (Hard Spun), who just ran second in the Gander S. on Saturday. Polly Freeze has a really good Collected 2-year-old filly that brought $210,000 as a yearling and she is currently in foal to Frosted. She's a mare that makes a really good foal and she's from a family of really good producers.

We're going to send her back to Constitution. Some people say that he's the next great stallion, but I would say he's already a great stallion with what he's done on these lower-priced books. That's the mark of what his sire did and what Into Mischief has done that makes them a breed-changing stallion when they can succeed with a variety of mares.

SUMMER ON THE LAWN (m, 12, First Defence – Summer Exhibition, by Royal Academy) to be bred to Charlatan

This is the dam of GISW Beyond Brilliant (Twirling Candy). She is booked to Charlatan. We were fortunate to be a part of his racing career as owners. He had so much speed and an ability to carry that speed a distance. Beyond Brilliant also has speed that can carry on both surfaces and I certainly think Charlatan could produce dual-surface runners given his pedigree.

SWEET CAUSE (m, 7, Giant's Causeway – Sweetness 'n Light, by Distorted Humor)

We are big believers in Giant's Causeway mares and Sweet Cause is from the family of MGISW Ms. Eloise (Nasty and Bold). We love mares with that type of race filly in her pedigree.

She will be booked to Catalina Cruiser. He is a horse that we really like and his first crop looked the part, which really didn't surprise us much because he is a beautiful horse. He's a big horse but he had a lot of speed for a big horse. We are going to be supporting him heavily this year.

YEAR OF PROMISE (m, 9, Gio Ponti – Shandra Smiles, by Cahill Road) to be bred to Twirling Candy

This mare is a half-sister to two Grade I winners–She's a Tiger (Tale of the Cat) and Smiling Tiger (Hold That Tiger). This year she will be going to Twirling Candy. Of our Grade I winners in 2021, two of them were by Twirling Candy. When we bred those mares he stood for $20,000 and really the best is yet to come for him.

This mare has already had a More Than Ready and a Constitution and now she will have a Twirling Candy. When we breed these young mares, we love to give them shots with these types of stallions. If she's going to be a producer, these stallions will get her there. Twirling Candy is rightfully now at that stud fee range where he's proven that he belongs. The two Grade I winners that we produced were a dirt 2-year-old and a turf horse, so that's a pretty impressive display of versatility.

With the 2022 breeding season right around the corner, we will feature a series of breeders' mating plans over the coming weeks. Today we have Katierich Farms, a boutique breeding farm owned by Larry and Karen Doyle and located in Midway, Kentucky. Katierich president George Barnes said the farm not only boards and breeds for clients, but is also focused on developing their own high-quality broodmare band for the commercial market.

ENHANCING (m, 14, Forestry–Heavenly Prize, by Seeking the Gold), to be bred to Blame

Enhancing is a daughter of champion Heavenly Prize. She is already a proven producer with her son Instilled Regard (Arch) winning the GI Manhattan S. in 2020. She will return to the Arch line in 2022 when she visits Blame at Claiborne Farm. Blame offers great value, and ideally Enhancing could produce a daughter to join the Katierich broodmare band.

HER SMILE (m, 14, Include–Hepburn, by Capote), to be bred to Into Mischief

Her Smile was a Grade I-winning sprinter going six furlongs during her racing career. She produced GSW sprinter Pink Sands (Tapit), who sold for $2.3 million in foal to Into Mischief in November of 2021. This mating essentially just breeds the best to the best and speed to speed. This sire line has proved fruitful with Her Smile's female family already. Her Smile's half-sister, Doolittle (Polish Numbers), produced stakes winner and GSP Tricks to Doo by Into Mischief. We are excited to see Her Smile's production when visiting the champion sire this season.

JOURNEY HOME (m, 8, War Front–Soul Search, by A.P. Indy), to be bred to Medaglia d'Oro

Journey Home is an exciting addition to the Katierich broodmare band. She was purchased in 2021 from the Sam-Son Farm dispersal. Journey Home is a large, imposing physical mare, but she was also precocious enough to become a graded stakes winner at two. With her physical, pedigree, and race record, we are continuing to support her at the highest level. At $100,000, Medaglia d'Oro offers amazing value for what he has accomplished. Her 2020 filly by Medaglia d'Oro brought $625,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Select Sale in 2021. We are hoping for a repeat of those results with this mating.

LILY OF THE NILE (m, 9, Pioneerof the Nile–Lil Indy, by Anasheed), to be bred to Street Sense

Lily of the Nile was purchased in 2019 out of the Fasig-Tipton November sale. Her first foal, Gingrich (Mr Speaker), broke his maiden impressively at Keeneland in October and looks to have a bright future. She currently has a Twirling Candy yearling filly which has checked all the boxes so far. Lily is due to have a Flatter in 2022 before visiting Kentucky Derby champion Street Sense. Lily's first winner, and the looks of her 2022 yearling, gave us enough confidence to send her to the elite stallion Street Sense. This is also the sire line that produced her champion half-brother Maximum Security (New Year's Day).

BROWSE (m, 9, Medaglia d'Oro–Daydreaming, by A.P. Indy), to be bred to Not This Time

Browse is another exciting new broodmare who joined the Katierich broodmare band in 2021. She is out of MGSW Daydreaming from a very productive Phipps family. Browse's female family crossed successfully to Giant's Causeway already to produce her half-brother, Grade I winner Imagining. Browse will return to this line in 2022 when she visits Not This Time. Not This Time offers the size and pedigree that will hopefully suit Browse in her early career as a broodmare.

PARADE OF ROSES (m, 6, New Year's Day–Rose and Shine, by Mr. Sekiguchi), to be bred to Cairo Prince

Parade of Roses is a young, exciting stakes-winning mare from a very active family. Her half-sister is Grade I winner and champion British Idiom (Flashback). Parade of Roses is expecting a foal by champion Authentic in 2022 before she visits Cairo Prince. Parade of Roses is one of four mares we have going to Cairo Prince in 2022. We believe Cairo Prince offers exceptional value and is set to have a big year after having sired 29 2-year-old winners in 2021. Cairo Prince has also crossed well with this family to produce Parade of Roses's multiple stakes-winning half-brother Royal Prince.

MIDNIGHT SOIREE (m, 7, Include–Casanova Striker, by Smart Strike), to be bred to Twirling Candy

Katierich Farms was thrilled to add another daughter of Include to the broodmare band in 2021. Midnight Soiree was a hard-knocking racehorse from a very productive family of Governor Jones. Midnight Soiree will visit Twirling Candy in 2022. Midnight Soiree is one of three mares we have going to Twirling Candy, one of the Doyles' favorite up-and-coming stallions. We believe he gives this young mare a great chance to start her young broodmare career in the right direction
