The Coolmore Australia stallion roster for 2021 sees the introduction of one of the very best proven sires in Europe and one of the very best 2-year-olds in Australia.

“We are very excited to welcome Wootton Bassett, a Group 1-winning champion 2-year-old on the track and one of the most exciting sires in Europe, to our roster.” said Coolmore Australia's sales and nominations manager, Colm Santry. “He will join Redoute's Choice's dual Group1-winning son King's Legacy, in a line-up headed by multiple champion sire Fastnet Rock, who is coming off one of the most successful seasons of his illustrious career.”

Wootton Bassett – with a first crop of only 23 foals conceived at a fee of just €6,000 – exploded on the sire scene courtesy of son Almanzor, triple Group 1-winning champion of his generation, whose first Australasian yearlings this year proved a great hit with buyers.

Wootton Bassett has also sired the likes of dual Group 1-winning filly Audarya, conceived at a fee of only €4,000, and Group 1 Prix de l'Abbaye (1000m.) winning colt Wooded, from a €6,000 fee, while his 2-year-old crop of last year included Group 2 winner and 2,000 Guineas candidate Chindit.

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

In such esteem is Wootton Bassett held that in Europe he currently commands a fee of €100,000 (AUS$155,000), highlighting the great value he affords Australian breeders at his introductory fee of only AUS$71,500.

King's Legacy needs little introduction, winner as he was last year of both the Group 1 Sires' Produce and Group 1 Champagne Stakes. The most accomplished juvenile of his generation, with the impeccable good looks to cost AUS$1,400,000 as a yearling, he is also the only son of Redoute's Choice ever to win multiple Group 1 races at two. Closely related to Not A Single Doubt, from the family of successful sire Snippets, King's Legacy will stand his first season at a fee of AUS$33,000.

These two new boys join a roster laden with proven Group 1 sires like Fastnet Rock, Pierro, So You Think and American Pharoah, last-named, along with Justify, U.S. Triple Crown winners at great-value fees.

With a support cast of outstanding sprinters like Yes Yes Yes and Merchant Navy, Group One Guineas winners like Churchill, Magna Grecia and Saxon Warrior joining explosive two-year-old stars like Royal Ascot Coventry Stakes winner Calyx, Blue Diamond winner Pride Of Dubai and Golden Slipper winner Vancouver, the Coolmore Australia roster really does offer a sire to suit every mare at a price for every pocket.

Sire 2021 Fee (inc. GST)

Editorial, a half-brother to top sire Uncle Mo, has returned to Anchor and Hope Farm in Port Deposit Maryland for the 2021 breeding season after the COVID-19 pandemic kept him in Peru longer than expected, BloodHorse reports.

The 7-year-old son of War Front shipped to Haras San Pablo in the summer of 2019 for the Southern Hemisphere breeding season, and he was scheduled to return to Maryland to stand what would have been his third season in 2020. However, logistical hangups with quarantine stalled his return in January of last year. Then, once those hoops were cleared, the initial global shutdown at the onset of COVID-19 crippled the cargo shipment industry and created a shortage of available cargo planes, leading to the decision to keep the horse in Peru for the year.

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

Editorial cleared quarantine for the upcoming breeding season in January. His first foals are 2-year-olds of 2021.

Editorial won one of two starts during his on-track career, finishing second by a head on debut, then charging on the outside in his second start to prevail by a neck. Both races came over the turf at Gulfstream Park for the Coolmore partnership and trainer Todd Pletcher.

The stallion will stand for an advertised fee of $2,500 during the upcoming breeding season, with a “Ship and Win” incentive of $500 for the owners of mares who make their first visit to editorial in 2021.

Discreet Lover, a Grade 1 winner who earned nearly $1.5 million, has been retired from racing to stand at Kerry and Leigh Ann Hopper's R Star Stallions in Anderson, Ind. He will stand for a fee of $2,000, with special considerations for approved mares.

A son of four-time graded stakes winner Repent, Discreet Lover proved his talent and durability over a racing career spanning 49 starts. A winner and stakes-placed runner as a 2-year-old, Discreet Lover had a busy 3-year-old campaign while hitting the board in seven of 14 starts, including placings in the Parx Derby and Ohio Derby. Not slowing down at age four, he again faced the starter 14 times with a $100,000 stakes win at Penn National and three additional stakes placings.

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

At age five, he developed into one of the nation's top older horses while racing 10 times, including nine starts in graded stakes. In April of that year, he won the Grade 3, $150,000 Excelsior Stakes at Aqueduct and then ran third in both the G2 Suburban Stakes and G1 Whitney Stakes that summer.

The biggest of his seven career wins came in September of his 5-year-old season, when he won the G1, $750,000 Jockey Club Gold Cup going 1 1/4 miles at Belmont Park. Among the foes he defeated that day were Mendelssohn, Diversify, Gronkowski and the two-time Dubai World Cup winner Thunder Snow. All told, Discreet Lover compiled a record of 49-7-7-7 with earnings of $1,452,735.

Discreet Lover is out of the Discreet Cat mare Discreet Chat, who is a half sister to millionaire and Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint winner Desert Code.

“Discreet Lover ran in 17 graded stakes and 17 other stakes during his career, so he went up against the best of the best and he proved himself to be a hard-trying and talented horse over his long career,” said Kerry Hopper. “He was precocious enough to win as a 2-year-old and even though most of his wins were going a route of ground, he also showed the ability to sprint when he had the chance, so we think he's going to be a versatile stallion and a good fit for the lucrative Indiana breeding program.”

Willow Hill Equestrian in Orange, Va. will add two new members to its stallion roster in 2021, in veteran Grey Swallow and newcomer Hollywood Handsome.

Grey Swallow, the winner of the 2004 Irish Derby, will stand the upcoming breeding season for an advertised fee of $3,000.

The 20-year-old son of Daylami previously stood at Calumet Farm in Kentucky. Before that, he stood in Australia and his native Ireland.

Grey Swallow has sired 10 crops of racing age, with 51 winners and combined progeny earnings of more than $2.4 million. He has Grade/Group 1-placed runners in both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres, with Ungrateful Ellen finishing second in Australia's Group 1 Queensland Oaks and Cadet Connelly running second in Canada's Grade 1 Summer Stakes.

Grey Swallow won six of 15 starts during his own on-track career for earnings of $1,607,293.

In addition to his Irish Derby score, his 2004 campaign featured a win in the listed Two Thousand Guineas Trial Stakes and a third-place finish in the Irish Two Thousand Guineas itself. As a 2-year-old, he won the G3 Killavullan Stakes.

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

Grey Swallow continued to run at a high level when he reached the older horse division, including a victory in the G1 Tattersalls Gold Cup in Ireland. He then became a globetrotter, competing in the U.S., Canada and Australia. His biggest success came in the U.S., where he won the G2 Jim Murray Memorial Handicap and finished third in the G1 Manhattan Handicap.

Bred in Ireland by Mrs. C. L. Weld, Grey Swallow is out of the winning The Minstrel mare Style of Life, who was named Ireland's Broodmare of the Year in 2004. His siblings include Group 3 winner Moonlight Dance, and Group 3-placed Central Lobby, Stylish Ways, and Rustic.

The stallion's extended family includes Italian Group 1 winner Night Style.

Hollywood Handsome, a Grade 2-placed son of Tapizar, will debut at stud in 2021 for an advertised fee of $1,000.

The 7-year-old retired with four wins in 36 starts for earnings of $269,989. After just missing the board in a pair of Kentucky Derby prep races, Hollywood Handsome entered the the 2017 Belmont Stakes but he was pulled up after he clipped heels and the rider lost his irons.

Hollywood Handsome earned his most notable black type at age four, when he finished second in the G2 New Orelans Handicap.

Bred in Kentucky by North Hanover Bloodstock, Hollywood Handsome is out of the winning Forestry mare Ladyflickerflacker, who is the dam of two winners from three foals to race. His second dam is the Grade 2-placed stakes winner Harbor Blues, and his extended family features Grade 2 winner Night Patrol.

Danielle Dougherty has recently opened up for business at her new stallion breeding and mare care facility in Citra, Fla.

Located on 65 lush acres in Marion County, Stormborne Stallions is home to Backtalk, Finale, Rogueish, Matanzas Inlet, and Young Brian.

“I am very excited about our new location and opening up the stallion shed in 2021,” Dougherty said. “Our facilities are ideal for the upcoming season with a 24-stall barn for the stallions and a separate wing set up for foaling and mare care.”

Dougherty, who has spent her career working with racehorses and stallions, also offers the services of mare care, sales prep, and foaling at her new facilities.

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

Backtalk (Smarty Jones – Apasionata Sonata, by Affirmed) is one of the five stallions standing at Stormborne Stallions. A $250,000 yearling, the precocious Backtalk was a multiple graded stakes winner that was on the board board in 12 of 15 starts. He broke his maiden in his first race at Churchill Downs, and less than a month later, he won the $110,500 Grade 3 Bashford Manor Stakes. Two weeks later, he won the $150,000 G2 Sanford Stakes in Saratoga. His dam, Apasionata Sonata won the Kentucky Cup Ladies Turf Stakes. Her progeny has earned $1,211,675, including two graded stakes and black type winners – Backtalk and Bsharpsonata (Pulpit). Backtalk stands for $2,500 in 2021.

Also standing at Stormborne Stallions is graded stakes and black type winner, Finale (Scat Daddy – Twinkle, by Lively One) – a $175,000 weanling at Keeneland that went on to win the black type Continental Mile Stakes and the $250,000 G3 Summer Stakes at Woodbine. He also placed second in the listed Dania Beach Stakes where he beat graded stakes winner and Grade 1-placed Excaper and multiple graded stakes winner Csaba. Finale's dam, Twinkle (Lively One – Twinkling Star, by J.O. Tobin) won a maiden special weight in her first race. As a broodmare, her progeny earnings are $1,213,396 with five winners out of six starters – two of which are graded stakes winners – Finale and Bright One. Finale stands for $2,500 in 2021.

Rogueish (Into Mischief – Verdana Bold, by Rahy) entered stud in 2020 at Stormborne Stallions. He is the son of champion sire Into Mischief (Harlan's Holiday – Leslie's Lady, by Tricky Creek) and is brother to stakes winner and Grade 2-placed Lucrezia. Into Mischief made history in 2020 with $22,506,085 in progeny earnings – establishing the all-time single season record for a sire in North America – ultimately shattering Tapit's previous mark of $19,907,973 from 2016. Into Miscief was also the only sire of five seven-figure yearlings in 2020. The dam of Rogueish, Verdana Bold (Rahy – True Legacy, by A.P. Indy) was a graded stakes winner of $331,297. She has produced $732,975 in progeny earnings with five winners out of eight starters that include two black type winners and one black type placed runner. Rogueish stands for $2,500 in 2021.

The newest addition to the stallion barn is Matanzas Inlet (Kitalpha – She's Stacked, by Stack). Kitalpha was a son of Mr. Prospector and a full brother to Kingmambo. Imported from Zimbabwe, the unraced chestnut – out of the champion mare Miesque – had sired six crops before returning to the U.S. Miesque (Nureyev – Pasadoble, by Prove Out) had career earnings of $2,070,163, 12 firsts, three seconds, and one third out 16 starts. She won the Eclipse Award for champion grass mare of 1987 and 1988, she was named to the Hall of Fame in 1999, and she was the winner of the Breeders' Cup Mile twice. Matanzas Inlet stands for $2,500 in 2021.

Also standing at Stormborne Stallions is Young Brian (Hard Spun – Glacier Peak, by Pulpit). He was a $500,000 2-year-old who broke his maiden in his first race at Del Mar – beating future Grade 3 winner Toews On Ice. Young Brian is by Hard Spun (Danzig – Turkish Tryst, by Turkoman) – who was on the board 11 out of 13 starts with career earnings of $2,673,470. Young Brian has five winners out of eight runners in 2020. Young Brian stands for $2,500 in 2021.

Veteran stallion Surf Cat, a multiple Grade 2-winning millionaire and the sire of 2017 California Horse of the Year Sircat Sally, will stand at Rancho San Miguel in San Miguel, Calif. during the 2021 breeding season. His fee is $2,500, live foal guarantee.

The 19-year-old son of Storm Cat's multiple graded stakes winner Sir Cat has stood exclusively in California since his retirement from racing in 2009 — originally at historic Old English Rancho and most recently at a small, private farm near Chowchilla.

From nine crops of racing age, Surf Cat has sired 57 winners from 84 starters to date, with lifetime progeny earnings of $4,046,140 and average earnings per starter of $48,168. His five black type runners are led by Sircat Sally, a $552,860-earner who won three graded turf stakes at Santa Anita Park and California-bred Horse of the Year honors from the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association in 2017. He is also represented by the dual Grade 3 winner San Onofre ($402,730).

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

Conditioned by the late trainer Bruce Headley, Surf Cat won six Grade 2 races from 6 1/2 furlongs to 1 1/8 miles from 2005 through 2008: the Swaps Breeders' Cup Stakes and two editions of the Mervyn LeRoy Handicap at Hollywood Park and the Potrero Grande Breeders' Cup Handicap and two runnings of the San Carlos Handicap at Santa Anita. He also ran second by a head in Hollywood's 2007 G1 Triple Bend Invitational Handicap en route to earning $1,045,420 from his 23 career starts.

“I am thrilled to have Surf Cat back; he was one of my favorite racehorses,” said owner Marsha Naify, who campaigned Surf Cat with Headley's wife, Aase. “Bruce did such a wonderful job training him. He has never been promoted very heavily as a stallion, but he has had some good runners, and I want to make the most of his remaining breeding years.”

Produced by the five-time winner Trust Greta, a multiple graded stakes-producing daughter of the Mr. Prospector stallion Centrust, Surf Cat hails from the family of leading sire Broad Brush.

“We are thrilled to have Surf Cat come to Rancho San Miguel,” said farm owner/manager Tom Clark. “He has an amazingly strong produce record from his small crops to date. We look forward to working with Marsha to help Surf Cat reach his full potential as a sire.”

Surf Cat joins a 2021 Rancho San Miguel stallion roster that features Curlin to Mischief, Danzing Candy, Heartwood, Northern Causeway, Richard's Kid, Sir Prancealot (Ire), Slew's Tiznow and Tom's Tribute. Inspections of all stallions at the central California farm are available by appointment.

Lone Star Special (Malabar Gold-Sunshine Special) has moved to Dr. Robert Hewlett's Holly Hill Farm in Benton, La. for the 2021 breeding season.

Benton Salmon has acquired 50 percent interest in the stallion who stood at Cherokee Ridge Farm in Carencro, La. for the previous two seasons for Irwin Olian's Tigertail Ranch. Tigertail Ranch has retained 50 percent ownership.

Salmon, a successful businessman with growing interest in the horse racing and breeding industry, is excited about his venture into stallion ownership and is planning on breeding a number of high quality mares to the stud.

“Lone Star Special has demonstrated remarkable success producing a number of high class runners from a very small number of foals,” Salmon said. “Notable among his offspring are Mobile Bay, Wheatfield and Trevilion. Lone Star Special has never had a fair chance and I intend to give him that. We are looking to gain the support he deserves from the Louisiana breeding community.”

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

Lone Star Special is an Unbridled-line stallion who is among an elite number of stallions that moves his mare up. Only 32 percent of all sires have a lifetime AEI higher than their mares CI. Lone Star Special has an AEI of 1.49 vs his mare's CI of 1.11. His statistics of 57 percent winners, $56,228 average earnings per starter, 11 percent blacktype horses and 19 percent 2-year-old winners, compete with leading national sires.

Lone Star Special is the sire of two graded stakes horses, both accredited Louisiana-breds.

Grade 2 Super Derby winner Mobile Bay ran from ages three to six, hitting the board in 21 of 29 lifetime starts. He won eleven stakes, often showing speed in route races of 1 1/16 to 1 1/8 miles, including the Grade 2 Super Derby, open company stakes such as the Sunland Park Handicap, the Maxxam Gold Cup and the Zia Park Derby, as well Louisiana-bred Stakes including the Louisiana Champions Day Classic at the Fair Grounds twice. He placed in another five stakes including the G3 Oklahoma Derby. His lifetime earnings of $1,246,440 rank him fourth among all-time leading accredited Louisiana-bred runners. A multiple accredited Louisiana bred champion, Mobile Bay was named 2015 3-year-old colt or gelding and Horse of the Year, 2016 older male and Horse of the Year, and 2017 older male.

Multiple stakes winner, Wheatfield ran second in the 201717 G2 Inside Information Stakes at Gulfstream. She was named 2016 4-Year-Old and up Louisiana-bred champion filly or mare. She earned black type in 11 stakes events, many against open company, and currently has $394,603 in lifetime earnings.

“I am delighted that Benton Salmon is enthusiastic about the prospects for Lone Star Special and is now my partner in this outstanding stallion. He will be breeding a number of top quality mares to him this season. Together we are building a strong book of mares for 2021,” says Tigertail Ranch's Irwin Olian. “At a fee of $2,000, he compares favorably to many stallions in Kentucky and Louisiana which stand for substantially higher fees. His ability to move up his mares puts him in very rare company among Louisiana sires and suggests there will be a lot more good things to come from him in the future”

Lone Star Special will stand the 2021 season for a fee of $2,000 live foal payable when foal stands and nurses.

Bred by H. Allen Poindexter, Killybegs Captain is the sixth foal out of Al Maha, a half-sister to stakes winner Find the Treasure and the dam of multiple graded stakes winner Pontchatrain from the family of Grade 1 winner Past Forgetting and Grade 2 winner and sire Concerto.

“He was a beautiful horse – sound horse – he retired sound,” Tonja Terranova, assistant to her husband, told Daily Racing Form. “He beat Imperial Hint, he was third to Mitole. He was just a solid racehorse; ran short, ran long.”

Undefeated in his first three starts for Repole Stable, Cowboy Culture won the historic Grade 3 Arlington Classic by a widening 5 3/4 lengths. He also was a runaway winner of the $200,000 Centaur Stakes at Indiana Downs at three. A winner of six races from ages two to four he retired sound with earnings of $339,494.

Trainer Brad Cox said, “Cowboy Culture was a very fast and precocious colt who won his first three starts for us, including a stakes race. He was always sound for me and was as honest and game as they come. I'm sure he'll do well in Indiana”

Quality Road has sired no fewer than 11 Grade 1 stakes winners–nine of them on dirt–with only six crops to race. His sales offspring sell at the highest average in the world.
