Tiz the Law, the winner of the 2020 Belmont Stakes, will shuttle to Haras Paso Nevado in Chile for the upcoming Southern Hemisphere breeding season, the South American publication Turf Diario reports.

The 4-year-old son of Constitution stands the Northern Hemisphere season at Ashford Stud in Versailles, Ky., where he currently is advertised for a fee of $40,000.

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

Ashford Stud has been a longtime partner in shuttling stallions to Haras Paso Nevado, with previous summer residents including Scat Daddy, Lookin at Lucky, Verrazano, Practical Joke, and Classic Empire.

Tiz the Law won six of nine starts during his on-track career for earnings of $2,735,300. His 2-year-old season was highlighted by a victory in the Grade 1 Champagne Stakes and a third-place effort in the G2 Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes.

At three, Tiz the Law asserted himself as a threat on the interrupted classic trail, with wins in the G3 Holy Bull Stakes and G1 Florida Derby. He then reeled off a pair of signature wins in his home state of New York, taking the Belmont Stakes, then shipping north to Saratoga to win the G1 Travers Stakes. The colt was also a close second in that year's Kentucky Derby.

The New York-bred Tiz the Law is out of the Grade 2-winning Tiznow mare Tizfiz, whose three winners from four foals to race also includes the multiple stakes-placed Awestruck. Horse of the Year Favorite Trick and Grade 1 winner Moonshine Memories are in his extended family.

The Paulick Report editorial team – publisher Ray Paulick, editor-in-chief Natalie Voss, news editor Chelsea Hackbarth and bloodstock editor Joe Nevills – takes a look back at this strangest of Triple Crowns in this week's edition of the Friday Show.

From the minute Churchill Downs officials announced in mid-March that the Kentucky Derby would be postponed until Sept. 5 because of the coronavirus pandemic, we knew this year was going to be different. I don't think any of us knew how different.

Kicking off with a distance-shortened Belmont Stakes June 20 and ending with a Preakness on Oct. 3 that may be remembered as one of the most exciting renewals in recent history, the Triple Crown had its share of highs … and lows. We may have learned a few things – some takeaways – from this year as well.

Watch this week's Friday Show below and let us know what your favorite memories were from the 2020 Triple Crown.

Like the Triple Crown-opening Belmont Stakes in June and the delayed Kentucky Derby in September, Saturday's 145th running of the Preakness Stakes from Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Md., saw significant declines both in wagering and television viewership.

Normally run on the third Saturday in May, two weeks after the Kentucky Derby, this year's Preakness – like all three Triple Crown races – was run without spectators on site, meaning on-track wagering was minimal. The Preakness encountered not only increased competition from the sports world – it was up against six televised NCAA football games including Texas A&M at Alabama, Oklahoma State at Kansas and Ole Miss at Kentucky – but both Belmont Park and Keeneland offered a full slate of late afternoon graded stakes races serving as major preps for the Nov. 6-7 Breeders' Cup world championships.

<ins data-revive-zoneid="433" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

For the day, according to Equibase, wagering on Pimlico's 12-race card was $51,242,631, a decline of 48.7% from the record $99,852,653 bet on the 14-race Preakness Day card in 2019. The Preakness race itself handled $31.7 million, down 49.5% from 2019 when $62.8 million was wagered on the classic race for 3-year-olds.

The wagering declines were similar to those experienced by Churchill Downs on Kentucky Derby day Sept. 5 and on the Derby itself, when handle dropped by 49.8% and 52.0%, respectively. Derby Day wagering fell from a record $250.9 million to $126.0 million and the Derby itself handled $79.4 million compared to $165.5 million in 2019.

The Belmont Stakes, which on June 20 kicked off a Triple Crown reshuffled because of the coronavirus pandemic, saw smaller wagering declines compared to 2019. The $67.8 million bet on this year's Belmont Stakes card was down 33.7% from $102.1 million in 2019 and the Belmont Stakes saw a 35.9% decline from $53.2 million to $34.1 million.

Combined, wagering on the three Triple Crown cards fell by more than $200 million, from $453 million in 2019 to $245 million this year, a decline of 45.9%.

Just as many other major league sports have struggled to maintain television viewership, so too have horse racing's marquee events. The combined viewing audience for the NBC Sports telecasts of the three Triple Crown races fell by 47.3% from 26.6 million in 2019 to 14 million in 2020. The Belmont's 2.0 rating was the lowest in 24 years and the 4.8 rating for the Derby – traditionally the highest-rated racing telecast of the year – sank to a 32-year low. The Preakness rating of 1.4 represented a viewing audience of 2.4 million compared to 5.4 million in 2019.

Well, we got through it.

The 2020 Triple Crown was different, that's for sure.

A Belmont Stakes that began the series, not at its traditional mile and a half but at a truncated nine furlongs around one turn.

A Kentucky Derby run in eerie silence on the first Saturday in September in a city on edge for months because of growing racial tensions.

A lost in the shuffle Preakness Stakes that brought the series to an end in early October on a day when tracks in New York and Kentucky were showcasing horses gearing up for the autumn Breeders' Cup world championships.

It was unprecedented. It was beautiful. It was 2020 personified.

<ins data-revive-zoneid=290 data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

<ins data-revive-zoneid= data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

The stars of this Triple Crown in the year of the coronavirus pandemic were, as always, those magnificent Thoroughbreds.

The New York-bred Tiz the Law demonstrating his dominance at Belmont Park for octogenarian Barclay Tagg and the everyman Sackatoga Stable partners, proving that age is just a number when it comes to training a racehorse.

The Derby showed us, once again, why they run the race.

While Tiz the Law looked unbeatable on paper, having gone on after the Belmont to win the Travers Stakes over the same mile and a quarter distance, he hadn't yet taken on the aces from the Bob Baffert Travel Team. Sure, Nadal was retired, Charlatan had been sidelined with an injury and Eight Rings, Cezanne and Uncle Chuck just weren't up to to the task at this stage of their careers, but the white-haired wonder still had the once-beaten Into Mischief colt Authentic and the insurgent Thousand Words in his arsenal. Well, scratch the latter…literally…just minutes before the Derby after acting up in the saddling paddock.

Authentic proved just that, denying Tiz the Law in the Run for the Roses and looking like a cinch to repeat in the Preakness a month later – especially after the Belmont winner's connections decided to sit this one out. A cinch, at least until forgotten rider Robby Albarado seized the moment to resurrect his career, boldly sending the gallant filly Swiss Skydiver to take on Authentic for a throwdown in the final three-eighths of a mile the likes of which we haven't seen at Old Hilltop since Sunday Silence and Easy Goer were hip to hip in that glorious Preakness of 1989. Or maybe since Albarado, aboard Curlin, engaged and defeated Kentucky Derby winner Street Sense in another memorable running of the Preakness in 2007.

Trainer Kenny McPeek calls this Daredevil filly – one he bought for just $35,000 on day nine of the Keeneland September Yearling Sale – a throwback. Sure nuff, she is. Her past performances read like the announcements echoing through a train station: Tampa, New Orleans, Miami, Hot Springs, Arcadia, Lexington, Saratoga Springs, Louisville, Baltimore.

All aboard.

This was David beating Goliath, Main Street outperforming Wall Street. It wasn't just a filly against colts, it was a victory for the little guys against the conglomerates. Likewise, Belmont winner Tiz the Law came from an ownership group that won all of four races last year from a five-horse stable.

But this game isn't about numbers, at least not for everyone. It's about dreams. Seemingly impossible dreams. And when they come true, as Don Quixote said, the world will be better for this.

That's my view from the eighth pole.

Moments after Sackatoga Stable's Tiz the Law captured Saturday's 152nd running of the Grade 1 Belmont Stakes at Belmont Park in Elmont, N.Y., trainer Barclay Tagg could be heard asking those in charge of the trophy presentation to hurry things up – he had to get back to his horses.

The veteran conditioner, who accompanies each set of morning workers to the track on his pony, takes a hands-on approach to horsemanship.

Tagg said that Tiz the Law has been easier to handle than most horses.

“He's so easy to deal with. If you ask him to go fast, he goes fast. If you ask him to go slow, he goes slow,” said Tagg.

<ins data-revive-zoneid=290 data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

<ins data-revive-zoneid= data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

Assistant trainer Robin Smullen also serves as the main exercise rider for Tiz the Law, and Tagg credits her with much of the Constitution colt's success.

“I'll say it – he's been handled perfectly, too. I've had Robin ride him and Robin can ride anything,” said Tagg. “She's a brilliant horsewoman and I can't say enough about her. She has the heart of a lion, the judgment of Solomon and the patience of Job.”

Tagg and Sackatoga Stable teamed up in 2003 to campaign Funny Cide, who won that year's Kentucky Derby and Preakness before running third in their Triple Crown bid in the Belmont.

While the connections are the same, and both horses are New York-breds, Tiz the Law and Funny Cide have many differences.

Tiz the Law posted a number of strong works leading into the Belmont Stakes, including a five-eighths effort in 1:00.53 on June 8 and an easy half-mile in 50.42 on June 14 over Big Sandy. The controlled final breeze for Tiz the Law was in sharp contrast to the bullet 57.82 Funny Cide clocked heading into the 2003 Belmont Stakes.

Smullen credits Tagg for understanding what each of the horses in his care needs, and putting them in a position to be successful.

“Barclay is so good at getting them to the right spot at the right time,” said Smullen. “We tightened the screws [on Tiz the Law], but in the last work we go in 50. And everybody asks, did you want to go that slow? Yeah. We did. That was on purpose. He's just so good at it.

“Our work two weeks out is usually our serious work and the last work before the race is the easiest work, if you have the horse that can do it,” she added. “With Funny Cide, you couldn't. His last work before the Belmont he went in 57, but this horse is easy to ride 90 percent of the time.”

Tagg mapped out all the details as Tiz the Law prepared for his first start in nearly three months following his score in the Grade 1 Florida Derby on March 28 at Gulfstream Park. Smullen said he even planned out the celebration for jockey Manny Franco, who offered the slightest of fist pumps along with a cathartic yell as the New York-bred hero crossed the wire to give Tagg a personal Triple Crown.

“Barclay told him not to be jumping around on the horse. Sometimes they shift their weight [in the saddle] and it's bad,” said Smullen. “So Barclay said to Manny, if you're winning, don't do that. Just don't. That's the stuff that nobody thinks about, but he does. It might be the difference between making the next race or not making it.”

Tiz the Law's sophomore season kicked off with a win in the Grade 3 Holy Bull on February 1 and Tagg will be charged with keeping the colt in good order through a campaign he would like to see include Grade 1 stops in the $1 million Runhappy Travers on August 8 at Saratoga Race Course; the Kentucky Derby on September 5; the Preakness on October 3; and the Breeders' Cup Classic on November 7.

Tagg said to keep Tiz the Law at the top level, he'll continue to listen to what his colt has to say.

“You have to pay attention to your horse. He tells you whether it's too much or too little,” said Tagg. “He tells you all that stuff if you pay attention to it. You have to show up every day. You have to see if he eats every day and if he eats every night.”

Tagg said he prefers to feed his horses later in the evening, and he's there each night to monitor that each food tub is emptied.

“I like to come back at night and if I can see his nose in the tub eating, I'm happy,” said Tagg. “If one of them has walked away and is eating hay in the corner when his feed is sitting there, that's a signal there's something wrong. Maybe it's nothing too bad, maybe the groom gave the horse two cups instead of one cup, but you need to find all this stuff out.

“A lot of guys have horses all over the place, but we don't. So, we have to make everything work,” he added.

The morning training, the perfect trip engineered by Franco, and even the celebration went according to plan.

And plans for Tiz the Law's next race – the Grade 1 Runhappy Travers – are already underway.

“He came out of the race great,” said Smullen. “He ate up and then he came out and grazed for an hour. His legs are good, his attitude and energy are good.”

For the next few days, Tagg said Tiz the Law will walk the shed row.

“He'll walk for three days and we'll graze him every afternoon like we do,” started Tagg. “The fourth day we'll take him out and jog him once around backwards to see how he moves and how he is and if he eats up that night we'll go to galloping. And ten days after that we'll give him an easy breeze, a half-mile.”

The wheels are already in motion as Tagg looks to add another trophy to his cabinet.

“I've never won the Travers and I want to win it,” said Tagg. “It's very important to me.”

Trainer Todd Pletcher reported that Dr Post emerged from his game runner-up effort in Saturday's Grade 1 Belmont Stakes in good order, and that the son of Quality Road could be slated for more Grade 1 action.

Pletcher, a three-time winner of the Belmont, said the Grade 1 $1 million Haskell Invitational on July 18 at Monmouth Park or the Grade 1, $1 million Runhappy Travers on August 8 at Saratoga are both likely targets for the dark bay colt.

“Both of those races are in play. It just depends on how he bounces out of the race,” Pletcher said at his barn Sunday morning. “We were always confident that a route of ground will not be an issue for him. He finished up well. It was a very encouraging effort.”

Owned by Vinnie Viola's St. Elias Stable, Dr Post arrived at this year's first leg of the Triple Crown off a stakes triumph in the Unbridled at Gulfstream Park on April 25 after breaking his maiden over the South Florida oval just one day after Belmont Stakes winner Tiz the Law picked up a second Grade 1 victory in the Florida Derby.

“We always felt confident that a lot of ground won't be an issue for him. It was a very encouraging effort,” Pletcher said. “Considering he broke his maiden the day after Tiz the Law won the Florida Derby, that's a lot of progress to make in short period of time. Hopefully he keeps improving.”

Bred in Kentucky by Cloyce C. Clark, Dr Post is out the graded stakes-winning Hennessy broodmare Mary Delaney and was a $400,000 acquisition from the 2018 Keeneland September Yearling Sale, where he was consigned by Hunter Valley Farm.

<ins data-revive-zoneid=172 data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

<ins data-revive-zoneid=173 data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

Pletcher also debuted a potential rising star on Saturday afternoon in Wertheimer and Frere's Happy Saver, who graduated at first asking by 5 ½ lengths under Irad Ortiz, Jr.

“He had been training well,” Pletcher said. “We were looking forward to getting him started. I have to admit, the win was more impressive than I could have hoped for. It's always exciting when you have that. It surprised me when he showed as much as he did.”

The winning effort garnered an 89 Beyer Speed Figure.

Pletcher is not in any hurry to run the talented son of Super Saver against stakes company.

“There are plenty of options, so we'll let him take us where we need to go,” Pletcher said.

In the Belmont Stakes, Pletcher also saddled stakes-placed Farmington Road who finished a distant eighth and said that the track was tough to make up ground on Saturday.

“We'll have to find a track that's more kind to closers,” Pletcher said.

Third-Place Finisher Max Player Gains Valuable Experience

George E. Hall's Max Player rallied from second-last in the 10-horse field to finish third in the Belmont. Trainer Linda Rice said the Honor Code colt came out of his first race in four months in good order on Sunday morning.

“He came out good and looked good this morning; no problems,” Rice said.

Max Player, with Joel Rosario aboard, tracked in ninth position as Tap It to Win led the field through the opening quarter-mile in 23.11 seconds an the half in 46.16. While Tiz the Law made a strong move out of the turn that propelled him to his 3 ¾-length victory, Max Player went seven-wide from the upper stretch but kicked on impressively, besting Pneumatic by 2 ½ lengths to finish on the board.

“He was a little further back than I hoped,” Rice said. “I was hoping we'd have been a little closer early in the midpack. He had a lot to do because of that. He ran a little green into the kick-back once again. Joel had to circle pretty wide, but he was running at the end of it.”

Though showing some signs of inexperience, Max Player has been consistent, with a career record of 2-1-1 in four starts. The Kentucky bred ran second in his debut in November at Parx before ending his juvenile campaign with a maiden-breaking win at second asking in December at the same track.

In his stakes debut, he topped an eight-horse field to win the Grade 3 Withers by 3 ¼ lengths on February 1 at Aqueduct, registering an 86 Beyer for his victory in the Kentucky Derby prep race.

Making his first start off the layoff, Max Player earned a personal-best 92 Beyer for his effort in the one-turn, 1 1/8-mile Belmont Stakes.

“Coming off a 4 ½-month break, I thought it was a very creditable effort,” Rice said. “You can build on this going forward. Going a mile and a quarter shouldn't be a problem as well.”

Rice said she had no confirmed next steps yet for Max Player but will talk with Hall and come up with a plan. The Saratoga summer meet runs Thursday, July 16, through Monday, September 7, and includes multiple options for 3-year-olds on the main track, led by the Grade 1, $1 million Runhappy Travers at 1 ¼ miles on August 8 and also including the Grade 2, $150,000 Jim Dandy at 1 1/8 miles on September 5.

“We'll keep all the options open for now and sort it out when we get him back to the track in a week to 10 days,” Rice said.

Rice saddled her first Belmont Stakes entrant in 17 years, when Supervisor finished fifth in 2003. Already just one of 10 women to train a Belmont Stakes runner, Rice had the second-best finisher from that group, with only the Dianne Carpenter-trained Kingpost coming closer when second to Risen Star in 1988.

Despite being run at a shorter distance and without spectators, Rice said earning the black type in a Triple Crown race for the first time in her career was special. He also said Max Player showed the potential to possibly run in the Kentucky Derby on September 5 at Churchill and the Preakness on October 3 at Pimlico if things continue to go well.

“It was pretty exciting, it would have been more exciting if we had our typical crowd that could join us, but it was great and I think he ran well enough to show that he could possibly win a Classic in his future,” Rice said.

Saturday's 12-race Belmont Stakes Day card at Belmont Park in Elmont, N.Y., featuring six graded stakes and highlighted by Tiz the Law's victory in the 152nd running of the Grade 1, $1 million Belmont Stakes, generated all-sources handle of $67,753,336.

Tiz the Law, the 3-year-old colt owned by Sackatoga Stable based in Saratoga Springs, became the first New York-bred to capture the Belmont Stakes since 1882.

To align with required health and safety measures implemented in New York to mitigate risk and combat the spread of COVID-19, the Belmont Stakes Day card was held without spectators in attendance. To properly account for the schedule adjustments made in response to the pandemic, the Belmont Stakes was run at a distance of 1 1/8-miles instead of the traditional 1 ½ mile test.

<ins data-revive-zoneid="433" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

For the first time in history, the Belmont Stakes served as the opening leg of the Triple Crown, with the Kentucky Derby moved to September 5 at Churchill Downs and the Preakness rescheduled for October 3 at Pimlico Race Course.

All-sources handle on the 152nd Belmont Stakes itself, carded as Race 10, was $34,088,475.

The 2019 all-sources handle was $102,163,280, a NYRA record for a non-Triple Crown year.

The Belmont Park spring/summer meet continues through Sunday, July 12, with live racing conducted Thursday through Sunday. First post is 1:15 p.m.

Prior to the NBC telecast, many of the Belmont undercard races can be seen on “America's Day at the Races” on the FOX Sports networks.

In today's Triple Crown News Minute, Ray Paulick and news editor Chelsea Hackbarth look at some of the horses competing in the five other graded stakes on the Belmont card, including the 9-year-old gelding Pure Sensation, making his fourth appearance in the now-Grade 1 Jaipur Stakes, a race he won in course record time in 2016.

The most unusual Triple Crown in American racing history begins on Saturday, with the 152nd running of the Belmont Stakes from Belmont Park in Elmont, N.Y. Normally run at a mile and a half in early June after the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, this year's Belmont will be contested around one turn at the abbreviated distance of nine furlongs in front of an empty grandstand because of the restrictions necessitated by the coronavirus pandemic.

Tiz the Law, a New York-bred colt by Constitution, is the 6-5 morning line favorite for Sackatoga Stable and Barclay Tagg, the same owner-trainer combination that won the 2003 Kentucky Derby and Preakness with another New York-bred, Funny Cide. Empire Maker upstaged Funny Cide's quest for a Triple Crown, winning the Belmont on a day when more than 100,000 braved the cold and rainy weather.

Clear skies are forecast for Saturday.

While Tiz the Law is the clear favorite, based off Grade 1 victories in the 2019 Champagne at Belmont and the 2020 Florida Derby at Gulfstream Park, there are some late bloomers who could offer a serious challenge, including Tap It to Win for trainer Mark Casse. In 2019, Casse took the final two legs of the Triple Crown with War of Will in the Preakness and Sir Winston in the Belmont.

In this edition of the Triple Crown News Minute, Ray Paulick and news editor Chelsea Hackbarth go through the field of 10 3-year-olds, assessing their chances and making their selections for this first American classic of 2020.

Something is glaringly missing in all the conjecture about this year's so-called Triple Crown – the energy and the engrained memories that all you “improvers of the breed” bring to the sport. When Chic Anderson up in the Belmont announce booth intoned, “they're on the turn and Secretariat is moving like a tremendous machine,” my feet felt like they came off the ground and the sweat poured out of me as a full-throated roar enveloped the race track.

Even if you weren't there but are old enough to have seen the race on television, it's a memory that must be forever etched in your psyche, Secretariat running like the wind at the end of a mile-and-a-half. My longtime CBS colleague Heywood Hale “Woodie” Broun, who was part of that broadcast team, said he saw fans waving their $2 winning tickets in the air, never intending to cash them in. “That was to be their souvenir because when you are in the presence of something marvelous, some little piece of it, like a piece of glitter, drops on you and you've got it. You've got that ticket. Part of Secretariat's glory is with you!”

<ins data-revive-zoneid=377 data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

That's what separates the Belmont crowd — with a Triple Crown on the line — from other major sporting events. It's a fan's race, corporate connections or a large stash of cash be damned! Connections and money may be a prerequisite to attending any Super Bowl or seventh game of the World Series. But any guy or doll with an eye on history can usually force their way into “Big Sandy” on Belmont day — just not this year.

A record 120,139 showed up in 2004 when the popular Smarty Jones lost his Triple Crown bid to Birdstone. Still, another 102,199 came in 2014 to watch West Coast heartthrob California Chrome lose to Tonalist. And 90,327 were rewarded when undefeated Justify brought home the bacon two years ago. While there won't be any spectators Saturday at the 152nd Belmont, the betting handle could be huge and that would really be something to celebrate for a Thoroughbred sport that is forever looking over its shoulder because of a lack of unity in its leadership.

When the Covid pandemic took over our lives a few months back, the usual calendar markers — birthdays, weddings, Belmonts — were snatched from us. And the Belmont took a bigger hit when it was not only placed first in the Triple Crown lineup, but also had its distance shortened to a mile-and-an-eighth. That shouldn't be too tough a get for these maturing 3-year-olds, but it will not really battle-test them. For nearly a century now the Belmont has always been the musclebound cleanup hitter. Now it's just a table setter trying to get on base.

For the record, the “test of the champion” Belmont has a storied history. It was first a “wrong way” race, run clockwise, English style until 1920. It had its beginning in Jerome Park, birthplace of modern American racing located in the Bronx, New York. Leonard Jerome, founder of the American Jockey Club had a daughter, Jennie, who gave birth to Winston Churchill. And, on a grand opening day in September of 1866, the biggest celebrity in the house was Civil War Commanding General of the Army Ulysses S Grant, soon to be President of the United States.

Turf writer Joe Palmer and his classic book, “This Was Racing”

I found those incidental facts in “This Was Racing,” selected columns by the splendid turf writer Joe H. Palmer, published in 1953. Palmer, a Kentucky-born college professor and PhD candidate who went on to grace the sports pages of the New York Herald Tribune alongside the columns of his Hall of Fame pal, the great Red Smith, had no doubt that the Preakness and even his sacred Kentucky Derby paled in comparison to the Belmont.

In his opinion, “The Belmont is a better race than either of them, and who has to tell you so? Why, a Kentuckian, probably now barred. If you doubt it, read down the list of winners and then dig into the books to see how they went into the stud and sent the great racers back.”

Palmer loved the race track too, “It hasn't the homey charm of, say, Keeneland or the intimacy of Pimlico, or the nostalgic somnolence of Saratoga — (but) Belmont lies over other metropolitan tracks like ice cream over hay and the quality of its racing is the highest in the nation.”

The Belmont has always held a sweet spot with me, ever since I began covering the Triple Crown for CBS News back in 1969 with Woodie Broun. That's the year Canadian industrialist Frank McMahon, owner of Majestic Prince, uttered the immortal words, “the Cripple Crown.”

We were interviewing McMahon on the eve of the race, where his horse was a short favorite over arch-rival Arts and Letters and rumors were rampant that Majestic Prince was not sound. The pair had been a neck apart in both the Derby and Preakness, with Arts and Letters flying at the end, but coming up a head short each time.

Frank had been out partying the night before and looked it. Woodie asked him what it was like to be on the cusp of history. He stared into the camera for what seemed like an eternity and then out came something like, “Well Woodie, the Cripple Crown …” Majestic Prince finished a game second to Arts and Letters, but came out of the race lame and never raced again.

So, maybe that's all we have this year, a “Cripple Crown” that few denizens trackside will be talking about this Belmont day due to the peculiar circumstances surrounding the race. And to all those who want to shake up the old order or to change the classic Belmont distance, beware. History is never kind to those who ignore it.

For now, let's consider the words of Joe Palmer from Kentucky, who wasn't shy back in the day in reminding the hard-bitten New York bettors that on Belmont day it's history that matters most. “On race day I want a band. I don't care if it plays 'The Sidewalks of New York' or 'Camptown Races' when the Belmont field comes out, but I want it to say something that says to the assembled multitude, 'Look chums, this isn't the ninth race. This is the Belmont!'”

E.S “Bud” Lamoreaux III is a creator and former executive producer of CBS News Sunday Morning with Charles Kuralt. He won four Eclipse Awards for national television excellence.
