SOLOSHOT (f, 2, Solomini–Sweet Queen {MSP}, by Twirling Candy) breezed in :10.1 and brought a final bid of $290,000 at this year's Fasig-Tipton Midlantic 2-Year-Olds In Training Sale. A main-track only entry who drew in as the race came off the turf, the 5-2 favorite led every step of the running, showing the way through early fractions of :22.95 and :46.64. Set down at the top of the stretch, she extended her margin at will and won easily by 7 3/4 lengths over fellow MTO entry Fast and Frisky (Solomini) to top an exacta for her freshman sire. Solomini's (by Curlin) third winner, Soloshot was produced by the first of four consecutive visits to the New York-based stallion. She has a yearling full-sister still to race while her dam returned to Solomini again for 2024. Sales History: $30,000 Wlg '21 FTNMIX; $290,000 2yo '23 EASMAY.

Much of the pre-race speculation about Saratoga's GIII Schuylerville S. for 2-year-old fillies going six furlongs on the dirt seemed to focus on which Hall of Famer–D. Wayne Lukas or Todd Pletcher–would be the first to win the traditional opening-day feature for the record seventh time, unless another Hall of Famer–Steve Asmussen–got in the way. Instead, that trio had to settle for filling out the superfecta as it was another veteran conditioner, Gary Contessa, who notched his first Schuylerville win with Becky's Joker (Practical Joke–Becky's Best, by Elusive Quality), the only filly in the field without a start under her belt. It was also Contessa's first black-type win at Saratoga since the Skidmore S. in 2019 and his first graded win anywhere since the 2018 GI Spinaway S. He had since quit training and then returned.

“This is the way to come back,” said Contessa. “I've tried the real world, but this side of the fence is the happier place for me. I like the other side of the fence, but I love this side of the fence.”

When the Schuylerville gates flew, Pletcher's $600,000 Keeneland September buy and June 18 Belmont debut winner Wine On Tap (Tapit) flew with them. She was quickly joined by Robert Reid trainee and June 18 Parx romper Camelina (Maximus Mischief) and Lukas's June 23 Ellis scorer Saratoga Secret (Arrogate). Becky's Joker had broken last in the scratched-down field of seven, but charged up the rail as that initial quarter sped by in :22.45. The eventual winner loomed on the turn to take advantage of a generous gap and joined the party made by the top three at the :46.03 half, but didn't stick around, pulling clear down the stretch despite running greenly and drifting significantly in the lane. She was 21-1.

“When she broke a little slow, I wasn't surprised because she's so big,” said Contessa. “She's 16.3 [hands], so I expected her to break slow and I was hoping she would engage immediately and she did. She got right behind the leaders and I loved her position. I felt we had a big chance turning for home.”

Saratoga Secret held for second, with Asmussen's June 11 Astoria S. winner Closing Act (Munnings) edging out Wine On Tap for third. Each of Becky's Joker's rivals was previously undefeated, all having broken their maiden at first asking with Closing Act the lone two-time starter and two-time winner coming into the race.

“I knew that physically she was as good as anything in this race,” said Contessa of Becky's Joker. “She trained like a stakes horse, but you don't know what's going to happen once the gate opens.

“With [owner] Lee Pokoik, it's easy because he always wants to run in stakes races. I didn't have to do much convincing to the owner and I would have to just eat a little crow if I was wrong.”

A $130,000 weanling at Keeneland November, Becky's Joker was a $50,000 RNA in her return to the ring in last year's Keeneland September sale. All nine of her published works have been at Saratoga. She signaled her readiness for her Schuylerville debut with a bullet three furlongs in :34 4/5 (1/19) July 7. Contessa indicated Becky's Joker would target the GI Spinaway S. Sept. 3.

“I bought her as a weanling right after she was born and with Lee, we always try to sell them as yearlings,” said Contessa. “If they don't sell as yearlings, we sell them as a 2-year-old. When she went to the yearling sale, everyone said she was too big. Then we took her to the March 2-year-old sale in Ocala this year and everyone that looked at her said she was too big. I'm thinking in the back of my mind, 'This is good, I may get to keep this one.' That's exactly what happened, and the same thing happened with Sippican Harbor [Orb], who won the Spinaway a few years ago. Nobody wanted her at the yearling sale or the 2-year-old sale and we got to win a Grade I with her, so hopefully we get to win a Grade I with this one.”

Pedigree Notes:

Becky's Joker is one of eight graded winners for Coolmore America's Practical Joke, who is also the sire of 15 black-type winners from his three Northern Hemisphere crops to race. The Schuylerville winner is the only one of the Into Mischief son's stakes winners out of an Elusive Quality mare, but Practical Joke does have stakes winners out of other sons of Gone West, including Speightstown and Proud Citizen. Elusive Quality has 159 stakes winners out of his daughters.

The winner's unraced dam was a $20,000 Keeneland January purchase in 2020 by Jay Goodwin and produced Becky's Joker the next year. Becky's Best, a half-sister to MGSW Vertical Oak (Giant Oak), also has a yearling colt by Caravaggio, who hammered for $90,000 to Becky's Farm at Keeneland November, and produced a colt by Silver State on Mar. 1.

SUGAR HI (f, 2, Twirling Candy–Laughing Matters, by Medaglia d'Oro) tipped her hand for trainer Bill Mott early off a series of quick drills and was subsequently slammed down from her 8-1 morning line into the 2-1 favorite's role for the first 2-year-old maiden race of the 2023 Saratoga meet. Picked up for just $180,000 out of last year's Keeneland September Sale, the bay broke with intent from her outside draw and was up to press the pace outside of second-time starter Lady Moscato (Quality Road). Ridden to come alongside that rival off the turn, Sugar Hi stuck a head in front with a furlong to run and sprinted away with her ears pricked on the wire, defeating Lady Moscato by a geared-down six lengths.

“With the mare, we needed the characteristics that Twirling Candy gives us which is the opportunity to get a race horse,” said winning co-breeder Fred Hertrich. “The mare needed a little push to get something that would stand out. We own shares in him (Twirling Candy) and he's been very good to us about helping mares provide runners.”

An American Dream: The Return To Royal Ascot, the first installment of a video series in the lead up to Royal Ascot, was launched by Great British Racing International (GBRI) and Ascot Racecourse on Wednesday morning.

The series documents the journey of US-based syndicate operator Harlan Malter, as he tries to turn the dream of returning to Royal Ascot with a horse sired by his 2018 G1 King's Stand S. runner-turned-stallion Bucchero (Kantharos) into reality. In the first video installment, Malter reflects on his personal reasons for his ambitions, as well as his experience of watching the horse carry the Ironhorse Racing silks to place fifth at the Royal Meeting in 2018. He also explains his plans for purchasing an offspring of Bucchero that can be trained in the UK, as well as one day producing a homebred out of Improvise (Fr) (Iffraaj {GB}), a filly purchased from the dispersal of Queen Elizabeth II's horses at Tattersalls last November who is now racing for Ironhorse Racing in America.

Since this first episode was filmed, Malter has also secured a 2-year-old by Bucchero that he plans to aim at the Royal Palm Juvenile S. at Gulfstream Park on May 13, the winner of which will earn an automatic entry into one of Royal Ascot's six 2-year-old races. The colt, purchased for $70,000 at the OBS March Sale, will be trained by Joe Orseno.

Malter said, “Our first tangible step [of the plan] was to head over to Tattersalls this winter to try to acquire a quality European mare to eventually breed to Bucchero. After finding that in Improvise, I was thrilled when GBRI reached out to help me and follow along in this dream. The next step in the process was to find a ready to race 2-year-old Bucchero this year who hopefully we found in the colt we purchased last week.

“The last step will be to head over to Royal Ascot in June and firm up our plans with a UK trainer and together look for a yearling prospect in the fall to send right over to Newmarket to begin preparation for a 2-year-old campaign in the UK.

“In a game that is often dominated by a small group at the top, horse racing is one of the few sports that lets anyone take a shot at glory. The process, the challenge and the people we surround ourselves within this sport is why all of us wouldn't think of living a day without these amazing horses in our lives.”

1st-CD, $120K, Msw, 2yo, 7f, 1:00 p.m. EDT

Whisper Hill Farm and Three Chimneys Farm homebred SHOPPER'S REVENGE (Tapit) is one of several well-bred juveniles debuting on this card. The gray is out of three-time Grade I winner and multi-millionaire Stopchargingmaria (Tale of the Cat), whose career highlight was a win in the GI Breeders' Cup Distaff. Three Chimneys acquired the mare for $2.8 million at the conclusion of her career at the 2016 FTKNOV sale and re-offered her at that auction two years later carrying a Tapit colt. Mandy Pope went to $4.4 million to take home Stopchargingmaria that day, with Three Chimneys staying in as partner, and went to $1.9 million for her first foal, a Pioneerof the Nile filly now named Stillchargingmaria. The Tapit colt she was carrying, now named Fifty Chevy, brought $825,000 from Japanese interests at KEESEP, but Shopper's Revenge RNA'd for $275,000 the following year.

Al Stall unveils another well-pedigreed colt in Sense You Asked (Street Sense). The $270,000 KEESEP buy is out of a half-sister to MGISW and young sire McKinzie (Street Sense), making his second dam MGSW & MGISP Runway Model (Petionville). TJCIS PPs

4th-CD, $120K, Msw, 2yo, f, 7f, 2:28 p.m. EDT

Clarkland Farm is represented by the final produce of their blue hen Leslie's Lady (Tricky Creek) in LADY IRENE (Kantharos). A stakes winner in her own right, the 26-year-old golden goose has been the gift that keeps on giving for the Mitchell family. One year after she produced Into Mischief, who went on to be a Grade I winner and now the nation's leading sire, the Mitchells snagged her for $100,000 in foal to Orientate at KEENOV. Her third foal for their operation was Hall of Famer, four-time Eclipse winner, 10-time Grade I winner and earner of over $6.1 million Beholder (Henny Hughes). Her first million-dollar yearling was the Curlin filly Leslie's Harmony, who brought $1.1 million at KEESEP. Her Scat Daddy colt Mendelssohn topped that sale in 2016 when purchased by Coolmore for $3 million. He went on to win the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf and is now a successful young sire at Ashford. Leslie's Lady's 2018 American Pharoah filly America's Joy set a record at KEESEP when summoning a whopping $8.2 million from Mandy Pope, but unfortunately she passed away in a training accident before ever making the races. Leslie's Lady 3-year-old filly Marr Time (Not This Time) is a 'TDN Rising Star'.

Chuck Fipke is also represented by a regally bred firster in his homebred Medaglia Forever (Medaglia d'Oro). She is out of GI Breeders' Cup Distaff heroine and champion Forever Unbridled (Unbridled's Song), a four-time top-level scorer and multi-millionaire. Out of GI Kentucky Oaks upsetter Lemons Forever (Lemon Drop Kid), Forever Unbridled is a full-sister to GI Ballerina S. winner Unbridled Forever (Unbridled's Song). TJCIS PPs

12th-CD, $120K, Msw, 2yo, 7f, 6:24 p.m. EDT

OXO Equine's Larry Best went to $1.4 million to acquire the well-related ITZOS (Bolt d'Oro) at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Sale. He was the third-priced offering at the sale and the most expensive yearling from the first crop of Bolt d'Oro. The bay is out of SW & GSP Lotta Kim (Roar), who is best known for being the dam of Horse of the Year and Hall of Famer Rachel Alexandra (Medaglia d'Oro), who in turn is the dam of GISW Rachel's Valentina (Bernardini). Itzos is also a half to GSP runners Dolphus (Lookin At Lucky) and Gladys (Medaglia d'Oro).

Rodolphe Brisset saddles an expensive and nicely bred second timer in $850,000 KEESEP buy Talladega (Into Mischief). The WinStar and Siena Farm colorbearer will need to step up after a poor effort first out going shorter than he probably prefers at 5 1/2 furlongs in the slop at Churchill Oct. 30. He enters off back-to-back bullets over synthetic on the Keeneland training track, most recently going a half-mile in :47 4/5 Nov. 18. Talladega is a half to GSW Holiday Disguise (Harlan's Holiday), MSW Midnight Disguise (Midnight Lute) and GISP Forest Caraway (Bodemeister). TJCIS PPs

LEXINGTON, KY–Godolphin's Mischief Magic (Ire) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}) started off the Breeders' Cup action on an unseasonably warm and picture perfect day at Keeneland Friday in style with a late-rallying victory in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf.

Dispatched at 6-1 in this 5 1/2-furlong event, the homebred was off slowest of all, leaving him trailing the field early. Meanwhile Speed Boat Beach (Bayern) and previously unbeaten Tyler's Tribe (Sharp Azteca) sped out to the early lead, dueling through a :21.65 opening quarter. American Apple (American Pharoah), a 51-1 shot, charged up the fence to take the lead approaching the far turn, just as William Buick asked Mischief Magic to begin his bid. The flashy bay responded, taking closer order up the fence to put himself in contention, but still had plenty left to do entering the bend. Stuck behind a wall of horses at the top of the stretch as Dramatised (Ire) (Showcasing {GB}) took control, Mischief Magic attempted to get out of traffic, but was quickly blocked off. However, another seam opened just in time as Speed Boat Beach called it quits and Mischief Magic punched through horses, forging clear late for a one-length score in front of a very appreciative crowd.

Dramatised held second with Private Creed (Jimmy Creed) in third. Tyler's Tribe was pulled up and vanned off after bleeding in this first start without Lasix.

“I have to say I knew they were going to go hard,” winning trainer Charlie Appleby said. “From the gate, William [Buick] is riding in such great form and has so much confidence in his horses. I can see what he was doing. He was just going to get him on his lead. But he made a lovely run (up the backside) and he was trying to angle out and just got pushed back (inside). He didn't do the horse any harm as I said to William, the one thing he wants is to give him gaps. Give him daylight and the old bugger just might have a second chance. Fantastic ride by William and great effort by all the team. Great to be back.”

“I expected to him to be outpaced early,” Buick said. “He's a comfortable closer at six furlongs at home. I knew the 5 1/2 furlongs here with the speed in the race would catch him out early. I knew if I got behind a horse that would take me into the straight, he would finish off real good. He felt super.”

The jockey continued, “He ran very well in the middle part (of his last race). It was a good race at Newmarket. This is only his sixth race. He's still learning. He enjoys this ground and everything came together for him today.”

As for the runner-up, trainer Karl Burke said, “She ran a fantastic race. We couldn't have asked for anything more, really. She's just a little bit slow for gate speed, which we were always a little bit concerned with, but Ryan (Moore) gave her a beautiful ride and was committed to go down the rail once we were slow away. Maybe we were a bit lucky to get the gaps in the straight. We thought we had it won a half-furlong out. Fair play–Charlie's horse is a very good horse. She's probably a stiff five-furlong horse.”

Breaking through at second asking at Goodwood in July, Mischief Magic romped in an allowance at Newmarket next out Aug. 13. He followed suit with a victory in Kempton's G3 Sirenia S. Sept. 3 and was fourth when last seen in the G1 Middle Park S. at Newmarket Sept. 24.

Pedigree Notes:

Mischief Magic represents Sheikh Moahmmed's operation from top to bottom. The chestnut is the 17th Grade I winner for Darley Australia's Exceed and Excel and his second Breeders' Cup winner, following 2013 GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf winner Outstrip (GB). He is also the 11th top-level scorer out of a daughter of Elusive Quality, who is now the broodmare sire of a whopping four Breeders' Cup winners. The other three all came on dirt with subsequent Eclipse winners in two-time GI Breeders' Cup Sprint winner Roy H, GI Breeders' Cup F/M Sprint victress Shamrock Rose and GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner Essential Quality, who is also a Godolphin homebred. Mischief Magic is bred on the same Exceed and Excel/Elusive Quality cross as MG1SW Guelph.

His unraced dam Veil of Silence, also a product of the Godolphin operation, is a daughter of English and Irish Highweight and MG1SW Gossamer (GB) (Sadler's Wells), who is a full-sibling to European Horse of the Year Barathea (Ire). Mischief Magic is the second graded winner for his dam, who is also responsible for GSW Sound and Silence (GB). The 16-year-old mare's most recent produce is a full-sister to Mischief Magic.

Key of Life became the first black-type winner for her freshman sire (by Uncle Mo) with a decisive score in Keeneland's Myrtlewood S. Friday. Hammered down to 3-5 favoritism off consecutive scores, the $350,000 OBSAPR acquisition seized the early advantage, zipping through a :22.34 opening quarter with a rival in hot pursuit. Turning for home in front after a half in :45.91, the bay opened up with ease in the lane to win for fun.

“She really has put it together over the last month or so,” said winning trainer Brad Cox. “Her win at Churchill she ran big, but she came back here and I thought really showed who she is opening weekend (when she won by 6 1/4 lengths). We took her back to Churchill and she was training well, and this race came up with a big field so (we decided to) give it a shot. We liked the (post position) she drew. She broke well. Very happy with her performance today.”

Third on debut behind a 'TDN Rising Star'-worthy performance form Summer Promise (Uncle Mo) at Churchill Downs June 25, Key of Life broke through next out there Aug. 13 and followed suit with an optional claimer score at this oval Oct. 7.

Rosedown Racing Stables LLC's Champions Dream (Justify–Dancinginherdreams, by Tapit) entered this unveiling with sparking clocker reports and lots of buzz, and made his $425,000 OBS March price tag and 6-5 odds on the tote look like value as he earned 'TDN Rising Star' status Saturday at The Spa.

Just a $25,000 Keeneland September yearling purchase by G.W. and Karen Parrish's Parrish Farms–reportedly due to concerns about his feet–the grey blossomed into a $425,000 OBS March juvenile off a sharp :20 4/5 breeze.

Turned over to Danny Gargan, the son of 2015 GII Pocahontas S. romper and fellow 'Rising Star' Dacinginherdreams was looking to become just his trainer's second juvenile debut winner at Saratoga over at least the past five years–the other among 25 to try was subsequent three-time stakes winner Dakota Gold (Freud) almost exactly a year ago.

The 13-10 chalk took a narrow early advantage and set a pressured first quarter of :22.94 before sneaking away through a :45.81 half. Cagliostro (Upstart)–himself a $385,000 OBS grad–took a run at the leader into the stretch, but Champions Dream swatted that one away and kept on to maintain a 2 1/4-length edge on the line. Well-bred longshot Prairie Dunes (Curlin) closed well to spice up the exacta.

Champions Dream becomes the 12th winner for his fast-starting freshman sire (by Scat Daddy), and third to follow that Triple Crown winner in being named a 'Rising Star'. Justify has sired three graded stakes winners thus far, and has two daughters in Sunday's GI Spinaway S.

Champions Dream is the fourth foal and first winner out of his dam, who is half to stakes-winning juvenile Doubled (Exchange Rate) and the dam of GSW/GISP Texas Wedge (Colonel John) and a full to GSP Good Pick Nick. Dancinginherdreams has a yearling colt by Flameaway (Scat Daddy), a foal filly by the same John Oxley colorbearer and she revisited the Darby Dan resident once more for 2023.

Repole Stable and St. Elias Stable's $725,000 KEESEP acquisition MINDTAP (Tapit) makes his career bow in this spot for trainer Todd Pletcher. Hailing from the same breeding program that produced unbeaten sensation Flightline (Tapit), the gray is a half to MGISW Curalina (Curlin), who summoned $3 million from Shadai Farm at the 2016 FTKNOV Sale. Summer Wind Farm's Jane Lyon purchased their Grade II-winning dam Whatdreamsrmadeof for $1.65 million at that same auction carrying a full-sibling to Curalina. The resulting colt, now named Curlingo, brought $900,000 at the 2018 KEESEP sale. Whatdreamsrmadeof is also a half to GSW Dream Spinner (Hard Spun). Rosedown Racing Stables Champions Dream (Justify) also debuts in this spot. A $25,000 KEESEP yearling buy, the son of GSW Dancinginherdreams (Tapit) developed into a $425,000 OBSMAR juvenile after breezing in :20 4/5. TJCIS PPs

8th-SAR, $105K, Msw, 2yo, 7f, 3:58 p.m. EDT
Shug McGaughey unveils an expensive and well bred son of Medaglia d'Oro in JUAN VALDEZ. Picked up by Hoby & Layna Kight for $225,000 at KEESEP, the dark bay brought $900,000 from a partnership led by West Point and Woodford Racing at the FTFMAR sale after breezing in :10 flat. He is a half-brother to MGISW sire Constitution (Tapit), GSW Jacaranda (Congrats) and GSW Boynton (More Than Ready). His GSP dam Baffled (Distorted Humor) brought $3.5 million from Bridlewood Farm and Don Alberto at the 2016 FTKNOV sale carrying a full-sibling to Constitution. Don Alberto bought out that partnership for $1.8 million with Juan Valdez in utero at the 2019 renewal of that auction. Baffled is a half to GISW Emcee (Unbridled's Song) and a full to GSW & G1SP Surfer. Todd Pletcher unveils another expensive juvenile buy in Robert and Lawana Low's $550,000 EASMAY acquisition Fantasist, who is the most expensive offspring thus far for his freshman sire Always Dreaming. The $40,000 KEESEP buy breezed in :21 2/5 in Timonium and enters off a bullet work for Todd Pletcher in 1:00 flat (1/25) at this oval Aug. 28. He is out of SW Saritta (Indygo Shiner). West PacesRacing bought first timer Dubyuhnell (Good Magic) for $400,000 at KEESEP and breeder Stonestreet Stables stayed in as a partner. Barbara Banke's operation went to $1 million to acquire his MGSW & GISP dam Wild Gams (Forest Wildcat) at the 2008 KEENOV sale. She is responsible for GSW Cazadero (Street Sense) and SW Mt. Brave (Malibu Moon). TJCIS PPs

6th-DMR, $80K, Msw, 2yo, 6 1/2fT, 6:30 p.m. EDT
DON CORLEONE (More Than Ready) topped the OBS March Sale when summoning $1.2 million from Kaleem Shah earlier this year and he debuts in this spot for Simon Callaghan. Picked up by Ciaran Dunne on behalf of his Lehigh Bloodstock pinhooking group for $120,000 at KEESEP, the dark bay topped the year's first juvenile sale after breezing in a sharp :9 4/5. He is a half-brother to MSP Broad Approval (Carpe Diem). His second dam, SW & GISP Featherbed (Smart Strike), produced graded winners Dynamic Impact (Tiznow) and Mo Strike (Uncle Mo). The powerhouse ownership group dubbed “The Avengers” are represented here by first timer National Treasure (Quality Road). The $500,000 FTSAUG acquisition is out of a half-sister to SW & GSP Silver City (Unbridled's Song) and Elope (Gone West). The bay enters off a best-of-97 five furlongs in :59 flat at Del Mar Aug. 28 and gains the services of John Velazquez, who is in town to ride this colt's stablemate Country Grammer (Tonalist) in the GI TVG Pacific Classic. Hawker (Justify), who was recently featured in Steve Sherack's Second Chances column, makes his second start here after missing by a neck in his career bow going five panels at this oval Aug. 6. The $675,000 KEESEP buy is a half to MGSW & GISP Commissioner (A.P. Indy), GSW & GISP Laugh Track (Distorted Humor) and the dam of champion Vino Rosso (Curlin). TJCIS PPs
